These projects can be expensive and Scouts rely heavily on donations to fund them. Recently discovered J&W Lumber and the short of it is I'll never go back to Home Depot or Lowe's again for my lumber needs! They have everything laid out by the type of wood and by size. So easy to find and you can park your vehicle right in front of the wood bins for easy loading. And once you loaded up what you need, check out is just as easy. As a novice wood builder, I would point out to make sure to check your pieces before buying. The first time I came, I needed some cedar 1" x 4" and the guy at J&W offered to pull all the wood for me and loaded them into my vehicle. When I got home, discovered some pieces were nice and smooth with beautiful looking whereas a number of pieces he picked were pretty rough. I realized I should have looked at each piece to make sure the surface was what I wanted showing for what I was building. But not their fault... just a lesson I learned. Their prices are fair and again, the convenience of being able to pull right up to the wood bins is one of the best features of this place. I'm only sad because I've lived about 3 miles away for the last 20 years and never even knew they existed. In fact, when I first discovered J&W, it was the store all the way up in Escondido. I would drive all the way to Escondido because I like J&W so much and then discovered there was one just minutes from my home. A few months ago I was looking to make a unique nameplate for a Manager, I was having a hard time finding a scrap piece of wood (4x4) to carve the name. I visited a number of the big box lumber suppliers and was told they only had the stock on the shelf. My Wife reminded me I should check J&W Lumber, when I arrived I introduced myself to Jose Gudino and explained what I needed. Jose told me he thought he had a small piece of scrap 4X4 and we searched the saw area and found one that was perfect. Jose knew there was not going to be a sale for helping me but did it anyway, the nameplate was perfect and so was his Jose's customer service. I have been purchasing lumber for my business at JW lumber for more than 15 years. Never had one issue or complaint to say about this company until today. Jacob decided it was too important to hide behind policy and not provide customer service, not allowing yard staff to help me by cutting 2 inches off of a piece of lumber, which has never been a problem in the past. I will permanently be taking my business elsewhere. Do not do business with people hide behind policy in order to feel like they are in command. Not 1 employee wore a mask. read more

After some research I went to J&W Lumber in El Cajon for my fireplace surround remodel. Their website stated they had 8 facilities in the area and one of their services was custom milling. I wanted a custom solid wood mantel piece cut and milled to a specific size. We were lucky to actually have the site manager, Jaz, assist us. I told her exactly what I wanted: a quality custom milled piece of quality wood, that was 53 inches X 5inches X 12 inches. At her recommendation we chose to go with a rough cut cedar that was 8 feet X 6 inchesX 8 Inches and it would be crosscut, ripped, planed, and routed (to ease the edges) to our exact specification and we had to option to take any of the scrap pieces left over. Jax stated it was no problem at all and an easy job. I returned the next week and paided for the custom order ($304.69) and would buy the stain when we picked up the pience. Prior to pickup I called and wanted to veryify that all edges were being planed with a 1/16 radius. I was told they did not provide that service (strike one). When we picked up the piece on a Saturday, Jax again helped us select the stain ($46.22) and I drove up to the milling area and they put two pieces wrapped in heavy tarp and securely stapled all around. After returning home, and removing the tarp we were shocked that the poorest quality of woodworking I have ever seen. Specifically: - The 8 foot piece was cut directly at the 53 inch mark leaving the rough end that was saturated with sealer applied that the supplying lumber mill. This sealer pentrated over an inch into the piece. There was no way you could stain this area unless you removed at lease 1 1/2 inch cause the pience to be 511/2 inches instead of 53. - This sealed end also had a split that was 1/8 inch wide, 11 inches long and 3 1/2 inches deep; - There was no milling or planing on the 5 inch sides of the piece; - The crosscut piece has a staggered cut that left a large 1/4 inch thick piece and a blade burn mark, instead of a smooth cut; - There were also two large dents that appears to have been made by the same object. They measured 1 1/2 inches wide and three inches long I immediately called and spoke to another associate and after conferring with Jax was told to bring the pience back and we'd discuss it. When we arrived, I showed Jax all of the discrepencies and she agreed with my finding and stated their policy was "NO RETURNS ON CUSTOM ORDERS". I told her I would immediate submit a dispute with my credit union for the credit card charge. Jax replied that she would bring this up to the General Manager on Monday and call me back. We thanked her and left with the piece. On Monday, I did not receive a phone call, so at 4:00pm I called and spoke to Jax. She told me that there were many emails exchanged and the bottom line was that I was to return the piece for a refund and if I purchased another pience there was a 90% chance of there being cracks in the final piece. I told her that the cracks were not really the issue. I told her I called a woodworking guild here in San Diego and was advise the proper method for the milling to have be done was to plane all four sides to the specific demensions specified and then inspect the entire piece and then make two crosscuts to take the best areas of the overall piece. Jax reply was that their millers were not professionals. I told her that I did not want to argue the point and I would return the two pieces and the stain for a full refund. I returned the next day and received a full refund and it only cost me 120 miles, about $20.00 in gas, and 5 hours of my time. The bottom line, NEVER, NEVER buy a custom piece of materal that requires custom milling at J&W Lumber. As the manager stated they are not professonals and you will most definitely not be satisified at the outcome. Not being one to end on a sour note, if you are strictly buy full piences of lumber, like decking, etc., at least you can inspect each piece prior to purchasing and not risk getting a bad piece. read more

We stopped into J&W Lumber to take a look at the different decking and railing system options. Everyone there was so friendly and very helpful. They were very knowledgable about the products and pricing and even gave us recommendations for contractors who install decks. We spent quite some time there deciding on the right material and Adam helped us out a lot. We were able to see the samples in light and they have some of the samples set up like a patio, so you could see what it would look like laid out and with varying railings. The pricing was very reasonable and I'd definitely recommend checking out J&W for your patio needs. Dog friendly as well! read more

This place is so whack. I called ahead of time to make sure they had certain lumber in stock they told me they had plenty of stock drove really really far to go ahead and pick those up and sent one of my employees so it cost me money. Only to arrive to five pieces of lumber that I needed absolutely unacceptable. I called the manager and he really could care less about this I asked if we can get a discount maybe just because of all the gas and my money that I spent for nothing and he basically laughed in my face and said no. I really don't suggest anyone using JW lumber down in Sorrento Valley these guys are useless and don't even call ahead of time because their inventory is super out of Wack and that's a quote from the manager. So I suggestion is if you want to get inventory on your lumber make sure they go out and physically check these guys don't know how to do their job properly and waste peoples times especially businesses. I am a homeowner that ordered a patio kit. Our sales person Leo got the quantities wrong for everything in the kit (lumber and fasteners). When the problem was brought up he tried to convince us we were wrong. It took us three trips to the store, several phone calls and extensive research online to get this constructed. There is absolutely no convenience to this "kit". And a $20 discount was offered for j&w's mistake with our order which is insulting since we paid $3k. read more

This company was so rude to us...we ordered a roof for outdoor kitchen to come in on a Thursday before a large event that Saturday and on Thursday there was no roof because they realized they never faxed the invoice to where it needed to go after we had paid... they (Junior) just said sorry but they only receive those deliveries on Thursdays so would have to be the following Thursday...they didn't offer to rush deliver, drop off as soon as possible, discount, nothing. Ok its probably weird to write a review of a lumber yard but I was impressed with this place. We were thinking of replacing our deck with Trex or some other composite decking. Tired of sanding and staining just to have the termites eat it up again. The staff was really cool and super helpful. Also they knew what they were talking about. Which is so refreshing these days. We took in our measurements and they priced it all out for us and we did a comparison price of regular wood. Trex isn't cheap about 3x more than wood but the price is built into the initial investment. They have an e-mail list too and will let you know of sales and specials. They had some discontinued trex lines on sale. Really half the price. Lots of it in stock too which is awesome cause Home Depot only has one color in stock and you have to special order all the railings. Bottom line... if you have a wood project go here! read more

I needed to get some redwood boards to replace some boards on a deck and some deck cleaner, and I found their staff to be professional, knowledgeable and friendly. They have a great selection of different grades of redwood and other hardwoods for outdoor construction (decks, fences, patio awnings, etc.) and a selection of products to go with them (sealants, stains, cleaners, etc.) - but not much else since it's just a lumber yard and not a whole hardware store. I constructed my first, second floor, off the master bedroom 11X12' deck with the help of JW Lumber in Sorrento Valley. Usually I go to Home Depot, but was intrigued with the design help offered and advertised. This being my first experience building, I really had no idea what to expect. I worked with a big quiet guy who was very generous with his time. Big guy used the store computer to design the deck with me and discussed selection of wood and railing. Then gave me the design and itemized list so I could think about it. I decided to go ahead and order the materials, had them delivered to my home and preceded to stain, assemble and construct the above deck with my husband and kids occasional help. There were many challenges involved with building a deck for the first time. But I soldiered onward, I used youtube and my search engine to research everything. The guys at RW Lumber were as helpful as they could be when I dropped in to buy something else to complete my deck. They were also wonderful about giving me additional, replacement, inside pieces, of the easy rail system to finish my cable railing instillation. I also enjoyed picking out all the finishing wood pieces from their stash. I'm grateful that the return policy is easy, like Home Depot. Some things I was surprised by on this adventure; the design was 3 inches on paper and hard to see, the material list was not complete, it was not a "kit", the easy rail cable system wasn't EASY... it was HARD to install. But there is no fun without challenge, and this was challenging. Great experience:) read more

EXCELLENT SERVICE AND PRODUCTS; I recently made two purchases of redwood lumber to be delivered for construction of two pergolas at my home (total of 80ft. length between the two pergolas). We ordered a pergola kit from J&W Lumber in Sorrento Valley. Not only where they over one week late in the delivery, the wood, rough cedar, is in terrible condition. Some pieces are covered with mold, some with black pitch, several very dinged up boards. Seriously I can find better lumber at the big warehouse stores. Reached out to them about 4 of the boards that cannot be used, call and email and call again. The customer service when you are in the store is great but once you buy it and leave,,,,,good luck. I have had to be the one calling again and again. They did not even call to let us know that they were delivering the lumber. Had many more projects that we were planning on using J&W Lumber for their pergola kits and we will NOT be using them again. read more

Because I had to first select the exact wood I wanted, I went to J & W in person. I went to JW Lumber for help with material for a pergola, on the recommendation of a user in a different forum. They have pre-fab kits that they can sell, but when we entered the dimensions I wanted into their software, it choked on it. I was advised to email the dimensions to them and they would work up a custom quote. OK, whatever, it is a nice service but not quite what I was looking for. Nice displays outside the office though, I got some good ideas. I worked out my own lumber list and returned the next weekend. A quick scan and I could see most of the boards were in the yard. But wait, the guy in the office says it is out of stock, and that what I was looking at might have already been sold to someone else. What? They've got some hardware in the office so I start picking out what I need. Asked about J-bolts for the post bases. The guy points me to the hex bolts. Really? Refers me to Marshalls for them, even though they are closed for the day. He rung up my order and requested a transfer for what was showing missing. It will be there "Tuesday or Wednesday". I got back out to the yard and load up what I can. I ask the yard worker about the other wood on the racks... he says any of it there is for sale, regardless of what the computer inventory might show. We pulled out some of it, but it was pretty chewed up, and he suggested I wait for the transferred material since it would be better. While we are doing loading, the signage above the racks falls off, almost taking out another customer who wasn't paying attention. Would a 2"x8" x 10 ft board falling from 8 ft up really hurt? I call Wednesday morning... "It will be here around noon, I'll call you when it is ready". No call. Thursday morning, I call again, speak with someone different... "Yeah, it is ready". I checked to make sure they had everything... nope, forgot one line item. Fortunately, they had it in stock. They delivered thursday afternoon. Big surprise, the chewed up pieces I had previously declined were delivered (the damage was distinct). They get two stars from me for super friendly / helpful yard workers, and good delivery service. Next time I need lumber, I'm going to Dixieline. Hard hat not required there. read more

Great customer service! In my words, they are a boutique hardware and lumber store. If you are looking for good and higher quality products, this is definitely the only place to go. They even went out of their way to drop the stain for our project off at our house since their inventory showed they had the stain, but it wasn't on the shelf. So they kindly dropped it off at my house the next day. They have GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE and GREAT PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE. I highly recommend them over and over. read more

Hi Joe- review from 9 days ago... First I wanted to express my disappointment in that we may have miscommunicated what was said in regards to the payment to J&W Redwood... We in fact had not paid for the entire balance at the time we had completed the fence, that being Friday after 5:00pm... In fact this was placed on our credit account and part of that is that we supply them with the names and addresses of where the material will be installed.. The process of the preliminary notice is to protect there interests as well as the home owner... It's never intended to be used as a scare tactic... Having worked w/J&W Redwood for the past 20 years I can honestly say they have always provided the best materials and customer service to us in regards to fencing.. Your invoice comes due on the 15th as we fully intend to pay in full. thus at that time you will receive what's called a Lien release... Although I can imagine it probably felt like a gut punch to get a letter in the mail speaking to placing a lien on your property I can assure you this would not ever happen under our watch... Matter of fact this is an industry wide practice in the construction field... So with that said I was hoping you would reconsider your previous yelp review as that J&W is an honest and ethical company who I would stand with and will continue to in the years ahead.
