Honestly, we weren't that... impressed, but we gave it a valiant go on both meals chosen! Kinda bummed there wasn't a drink menu with cocktails, but they had a great selection of wine ranging from $100-$500 a bottle. So, we stuck with water. Bread and creamy butter was dropped off while we waited and who can't resist a warm roll? Got the Trail Boss Prime Rib, with salad bar, and baked potato side was requested as medium. The au ju lacked flavor, and only lasted a few bites before not used at all. The baked potato was delish though! Prime rib was very tender, a lot of cap which was nice, but it was just sorta.. average. I snagged their Teriyaki Tenderloin Kabob on a bed of wild rice, salad bar, and asparagus side (probably the first restaurant I've seen that's offered asparagus as an actual side), requested well done. By all accounts it does look a bit charred, but when the veggies were pulled apart, they were warm and tender and paired well with the teriyaki and rice. That rice was delish! This was my first time here, and overall I had a great experience. The place was packed for a Tuesday, but with the College World Series in town, that made sense. For starters, we had the bacon-wrapped shrimp, which came with mushrooms on the side. It didn't look particularly appetizing when it arrived, but it was absolutely delicious. The mushrooms were especially good--salty without being overpowering, which I really enjoyed. To drink, I tried the sangria. It didn't particularly stand out, but it was still enjoyable. For my entrée, I chose the whiskey ribeye cooked medium-rare, and it came out exactly how I like it. The steak was cooked perfectly and was very flavorful. The salad bar wasn't huge, but it had a nice variety of toppings to choose from. The atmosphere is rustic with very dim lighting, and there were a few TVs throughout the restaurant as well. It does get quite loud when it's busy, though. Our waitstaff was attentive without being overbearing, which I appreciated. Overall, it was a good experience, and I will definitely be back. read more

I've been going here since it was new, over 4 decades now. The place still amazes me, the ambiance hasn't changed at all, it still feels like you've come in from a cattle drive. The service is always great, they obviously do a great job of training. We were in town for the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders meeting and it was packed. Luckily, I was smart enough to make reservations, and we actually were seated right away. The young man that was our server was a little overwhelmed, but he did a great job. We also thought our cocktail waitress was definitely above grade, she was quick, calm, and didn't let the craziness slow her down. All of us had the whiskey steak medium rare and it was every bit as good as it was in the 80's , which proves that sometimes you CAN go home. They have a solid, half pound burger with a side of your choice for a really reasonable price, and you can even add on their famous salad bar! Decided to return to The Drover for supper before a show, but The Drover drove me away. We arrived when they opened at 5. We both ordered the Whiskey Top Sirloin with the Whiskey Marinade with baked potato and salad bar. Includes Bread. The Bread came first and was warm. The bread is really good. The salad bar is decent. Ice berg and greens. I skipped the ice berg and went with the greens. Lots of basic toppings, but everything was fresh. The steak arrived. We both ordered medium to medium well with a light pink center. Mine came out less than rare and was raw in the center. My wife's was half correct and half rare. She kept it and ate the good part. I sent it back. Before sending it back it was very hard to cut the steak. When it came back it was charred and now it was like chewing shoe leather. The worse steak I have gotten at a restaurant. The first 3 tables had steaks sent back that we saw and another two tables sent steaks back. This is a problem with the cook. This is a steakhouse and having a cook who doesn't know how to prepare a steak is a serious problem. The waitress never came back and the service was terrible. Just opened up for the evening and not warm and friendly. I had a show to go to and was not sending it back again and based on the experience so far I wouldn't want to send it back. I won't return due to the service. The wait staff saw and knew how many steaks were being returned. That would be a huge red flag to involve management. They didn't do anything to make it right and we had a show to catch. The Drover has been an institution in Omaha since 1977. It's known locally for its whiskey-marinated steaks and old-time salad bar, and is a favorite for locals and tourists alike. But I'm not a huge fan. First, it's really, really dark and really, really noisy. Not a place for a conversation, especially if you are dining with kids. The salad bar is, well, meh. The tastiest part is the super sweet poppy seed dressing. As far as the stars of the show go, I've eaten several of their steaks. They've all been well marinaded and perfectly cooked, but the ribeye and strip had a lot of exterior gristle that should have been trimmed off before grilling. Meals come with a baked potato, and other sides are available. I wish creamed spinach and corn were options (it is the Cornhusker state, after all), but those are just my preferences. We made reservations weeks ago (we knew the College World Series would be in town) so we did not have the 2+ hour wait that less organized folks were complaining about. We were seated right away - yay, OpenTable! Service was very attentive, and our meal's timing was impeccable. I was disappointed by my Steak experience at the Drover. I came with a group and we were able to be accommodated last minute which was great and appreciated. I was told this restaurant had one of the best Steaks in Omaha so my expectation were high. I ordered the Whiskey Ribeye with broccoli and soup. The soup of that day was baked potato and honestly pretty good. A little heavy for a starter but it was flavorful and a nice starter. As for the steak, I ordered it medium, but when it initially came out it, it was way undercooked and very rare. Third time eating here. Definitely not a restaurant you go to on a budget! It was my Son's birthday, so we ordered whatever he wanted. whiskey ribeye was superb. The loaded baked potato soup was legendary. Appetizer was the Special: bacon wrapped shrimp, which came with perfectly braised whole mushrooms, all with a light char that was perfection. I had the Steak and Seafood just because (market price was $100 for that meal alone) but YOLO! An entire king crab leg + felt mignon. Excellent. Service was prompt and attentive. The Drover is a dark, western themed steak house just off of 72nd, and people in Omaha are divided on it. In the 3 decades I've been going there little has changed (with the exception of some parts of the interior cause of a fire). Newer steakhouses will be more of a "an experience", but for me The Drover being frozen in time is what makes it great. The Whiskey filet is great, and their signature dish. The pork chops are properly seasoned, and more importantly not dry and overcooked like most places. The service has always been friendly and accommodating. Be sure to make reservations. read more

After reading a little about what to expect, we decided to have dinner here and sure weren't disappointed! Our table ordered the Drover prime rib (to share for two of us) and another in the party had the evening special 12 ounce bone in filet. Each of the entrees comes with the salad bar which is standard-- nothing out of the ordinary. We had the prime rib prepared with the whisky sauce and it was so delicious, cooked to perfection. As a side, we had baked potatoes and the sautéed mushroom-- all were equally tasty. We were able to get a last minute reservation so we were seated immediately. A cocktail waitress stopped by soon after to get our drink order and then our waiter came by within the first 5 minutes to get our order. Water was refilled and we felt the amount of attention we had throughout the meal was appropriate. The restaurant is a little dimly lit, but overall a great steakhouse feel. Their bourbon selection and emphasis on "whiskey steaks" sold me. I had a reservation, and it was a good thing I made plans ahead: walking in the place was absolutely packed. Tables full of suits talking about things like markets and EBITDA. I saw two folks who tried to walk up get turned away. The service was generally OK despite the capacity. My bread and soup came out fast after putting in my order. However, there was quite a delay before my steak came out, but it was expected. The bread? A warm wheat round loaf, served with salted butter. It was reminiscent of the brown bread at Cheesecake Factory. For my soup, I got the Clam Chowder: not too hot, loaded with potatoes and less loaded on the clams. Drinks? The whiskey selection was indeed pretty good. They had bottles of Weller, EH Taylor, and Blanton's on the bar, which I am sure would impress a bourbon enthusiast. I personally would have liked to see some more craft options. For my entree, I got the Whiskey Ribeye: perfectly cooked, but not sure what made it a "whiskey steak." Didn't taste any influence from any whiskey. It needed a little bit more seasoning, but it was overall a good cut of meat. The Drover, a review: When you pull into the parking lot the outside of the place appears very unassuming. Once you walk-in, the modest decor gets even more humbling. It's a very old school, western, and rustic type of vibe. There's a sense of rugged individualism, resilience, and Western identity. Cowboys are a big part of the theme here, hence the brand name, The Drover. Various murals of impersonations of these vaqueros plaster the walls. The lounge area gives off old mafia movie feels, as you can picture how it could be filled with clouds of cigar smoke as mafioso Capos & soldiers belly-up to the dark bar sipping on their Scotch. Once the drinks start flowing and you get relaxed then the magic starts! You won't be disappointed in the Old Fashioned, or any other type of cocktail for that matter. The fresh baked bread comes out first with a significant portion of spread butter, which is absolutely delicious! Then you realize, that this place actually still has an old school salad bar. Like as soon as I seen the salad bar with all the fixings and the homemade Thousand Island dressing, I was hooked! Finding an open buffet style salad bar these days is as rare as finding a good woman who cooks and cleans. They're like unicorns. The Drover has several cuts of meat to select from. You honestly can't go wrong with the cut that you choose. They have seafood selections as well, just in case you want to get your Surf 'N Turf on. There's one thing that you can definitely say about this place, and that's the fact that it's a no-frills type of joint. They don't waste any time with any fluff. It's strictly meat & potatoes...literally. You won't find any bartenders here doing stupid bottle tricks and begging for clicks like they do out in Vegas. Instead you'll find Tony, who just keeps the glasses full with the concoctions that you wish to imbibe on. One of the female bartenders would fit right in at home in NYC as she drops an F-bomb or two. But, I'm no Karen, so I welcome the realness. She stated, "it's so fucking hot in here", as the bar fills up and the workers get slammed! Now onto the main course: I went with the 8oz Filet and the loaded baked potato. It was delicious! Simple, tasty, and loaded with flavor. They're famous for their secret "whiskey marinade" recipe. The baked potato comes out still wrapped in its foil, which will bring back memories of when your dad would cook them on an open flame charcoal grill. Did I mention the butter? I think I ate enough butter to kill a baby cow! And, I still couldn't get enough. Overall, this place is the epitome of Midwest Steakhouses. It gets right to the point and its customers will appreciate that! One guest told the bartender that he's not from Omaha, but every time he comes into town he comes directly to The Drover to eat dinner. He stated, "I've been coming here for 28 years". Later adding, "except for the years it was burnt down". Another female bartender quickly corrected him, "it was only shutdown for 9 months". Well, when your favorite restaurant is closed for any amount of time, "it felt like years", I added, as we all got a good laugh. As one old timer who came to sit at the bar said, "this is our favorite place". Well...old cowboy, I can see why. And, just like any Old Western movie, The Drover packs a serious punch. Pro tip: they open for dinner at 5:00pm, so get here early, unless you have Reservations of course. This was the restaurant that made me feel like I was back in my home state . I ordered the 38oz tomahawk with the whiskey marinade. I've eaten a lot of ribeyes in my life but this was the best tasting one I've had in recent memory, if not ever. I put a phone down for scale because there's not a single fruit in this establishment lol. One of the staff offered some A1 steak sauce as a unit of measurement but added "don't put this on there though." Noted, sir. The bread and baked potato were nice and warm, the perfect comfort food. I also did enjoy the salad bar. I hedged on the dessert but ended up getting it bc I already blew past my week's calorie count anyways. I got the homemade turtle cheesecake- it wasn't like any traditional cheesecake that I've had but almost like a delicious fusion of cheesecake and warm bread pudding with all the toppings. We've gone here several times because my brother loves it, but I have never been super impressed. The vibe is very old-school steakhouse, which is cool. I will say it was oddly FREEZING last night the restaurant, and I say that as a 7 months pregnant woman who is always hot. Several members of our party ended up using a blanket that they went and got from the car. The starter bread was very good - soft, warm, plenty of butter. My husband and I both had the loaded baked potato soup, which was fantastic. Several members of our party had the salad bar which was nothing to write home about. I had the burger and fries. It had plenty of blue cheese, which I appreciated, and tons of fries. But as far as taste, it was fine but not great. The rest of our party got steak. Everyone noted that it was incredibly tough. My husband hardly ate any of his, which is not like him. He said he had to chew each piece so long to ensure he didn't choke, and he finally just gave up. The woman that took our order was a bit cold. The food and check took longer than they should have. Water glass was empty way too long. By the end of the night, I counted 5 people that touched our table during our visit. My gut tells me by not having a dedicated server, no one takes accountability for service. My wife and I chose this classic Omaha steakhouse to celebrate our 18th anniversary and it did NOT disappoint. So much bread. So much salad bar... Excellent Experience at The Drover! While visiting Omaha, Nebraska my husband and I were highly recommended to try The Drover Steakhouse, so I made a reservation. From the moment we arrived, we were immediately seated and welcomed. We ordered the Whiskey Filet, which was delicious. I had asparagus as my side, and my husband had a baked potato. Our drinks were good, and the bread was absolutely delicious! What really stood out was the excellent service. There were several waitresses helping throughout our meal, and they all came by our table to make sure everything was okay. I even asked one of the waitresses, who told me she had been there for five years, who we should leave the tip for. She explained that the tips are shared among everyone. ( I gave her a generous tip because the service was excellent). My husband also enjoyed the cinnamon toffee cheesecake, which was recommended to him-and he definitely enjoyed it! Overall, we had an excellent experience from beginning to end. Great food, delicious drinks and bread, and wonderful service. We would definitely return if we're ever in the Omaha area again.
