I've never been to Chicago, but I'm so beyond grateful to have found J.C. Lind Bike Co and the owner Jon. I was recently on the hunt for a Brompton c line black edition in turkish green w/mid bar and was having zero luck even through brompton. I'm not one to give up so I continued searching the internet and in my quest I found the exact bike but had a roadblock making the purchase for delivery vs in-store bike. Seeing I'm in California and the bike shop is in Illinois- it just wasn't possible. J.C. Lind is different from your typical bike shop in two ways; 1) the bikes that they carry and 2) the level of customer service and attention to detail they offer. If you view bicycles as more than just recreation but as viable transportation, you will find J.C. Lind as an important resource. You won't find the Big 4 bike brands but instead they carry Workcycle, Urban Arrow, Gazelle and Brompton just to name a few. I have been researching e-bikes for months and decided I wanted to upgrade to an e-bike with a belt drive and internal gear hub. I gravitated to the Dutch bicycle brand Gazelle. Gazelle has been making bikes for 129 years. I worked with Ben and he let me test ride 3 different bikes before I settled on the Ultimate C8. Working with Ben and the owner, Jon was terrific. Ben kept me updated throughout the process in terms of when my bike would be ready and the accessories that were on order. The day I picked up my Gazelle bike, Jon spent a good half hour orienting me to using and charging the Bosch motor and battery, operating the Nexus internal gear hub and how best to keep everything in good working condition. As a medical student with no car, it was crucial to get my Brompton up and running after a non-Brompton bike mechanic messed it up in Louisiana. John was super booked up, but was able to squeeze me in to fix my shifting problem and give me a couple upgrades. If you have a Brompton, this is the best shop! They have everything in stock and are happy to help you try out the different bags, etc. Both of them were super patient and answered all of my questions with smiles (I had a lot of questions since I'm a Brompton newbie). Just took delivery (DC) on my Winther Cargoo today and couldn't be happier. Jon was a breeze to communicate with- he was knowledgeable, flexible, and went out of his way to accommodate a long distance shipment. Yes, I had to meet the driver in the suburbs of VA due to DOT truck size issues but the hiccup turned into a positive adventure: figuring out how to get from Tyson's Corner to Capitol. I have to steal this from another review, because it's so true: "JC Lind is The Best Commuter Bike Resource"! I wish I would have discovered this store when I first moved to Chicago, so I would not have had to go through the whole "let's add fenders, a rack, kickstand, lights" just to make my bike useful. Jon sells bikes that work. Yes, they look good as well, but the main thing for me is that they are useful. I live in the city and do not have to own a car, so the bike is my car replacement. I ride it in the winter, in the summer, in the rain. Jon sold me a Gazelle ebike with a belt drive, which has now seen more than 2000 miles of Chicago. It still looks like new, rides very smoothly, and is super reliable. Jon and his small team are truly amazing. They really know their bikes and are always extremely helpful and patient. As my bike is my car, I really do not want to be without and Jon is super accommodating and always has it ready extremely fast (maintenance, tire change etc). He is also super easy to communicate with, via email, text, or phone. I have seen quite a number of people who come in looking for a $500 bike. This is not a store for cheap bikes. They sell bikes that will last you for a long time and provide excellent and very reasonably priced service for these bikes. I WISH I could purchase one of their gorgeous bikes. As it stands, I have a nice, solid city bike from another manufacturer. But. I needed to install a GMG 911 bike seat over the rear wheel for my kid who likes to ride behind and I had NO idea how to get it secured and stable. So, non-Dutch bike, very Dutch-ish bike seat. I called Jon thinking, "Oh boy, he's going to be aloof with his lovely bikes, but I'm desperate." No such thing. SUPER friendly, down-to-earth. Invited me down right away. Gave me options, made sure I felt comfortable with install technique and cost before he worked on the bike. Had me fixed up same day, lovely and solid rear rack and did all the adjustments to make sure that things would go smoothly. Patiently showed me how to take it off and put it back on (I didn't even have to ask!) My husband bought his bike here so when I moved to Chicago, he brought me here to get me a brand new city bike to transport myself around with. Because my husband works strange hours, he sent Jon an email saying I'd be coming along around that time and was looking for a bike in a Dutch style in a certain price range. When I entered the shop, Jon knew straight away who I was and already had some ideas for me. I've been riding bikes since early childhood so I know what I want and what is a good bike, so we quickly agreed on a bike. Before this, though, he let me test ride it around the block, made sure the seat was the right height and told me which way to go. I didn't feel like I really needed to test ride the bike, it seemed good to me, but he really encouraged me to do it and I felt that he really cared that I was happy with my new bike and shouldn't get into it without having a feel for the bike. I also ended up buying a bunch of accessories; they mounted lights at the front and at the back for me, I got a really nice helmet, needed locks and straps and what not. Throughout the entire experience, Jon and his co-workers explained everything to me in a really good way and answered all my questions. When my husband bought his bike, he also got a bike map of all the bike trails in Chicago which has come in handy for him over the past year. This is definitely a shop I will go back to and take my bike to be serviced at. My husband had his bike serviced there as I bought my new bike, and he couldn't be happier. He keeps on saying that whenever he leaves his bike there he knows he is going to get everything done to it and a bit more by Jon and his team. What really made us so happy and will have us shouting praise for this shop from the rooftops is the way in which Jon accommodated my husband's incredibly irregular and tricky work schedule. Quick summary: this is hands-down the best bike shop for high quality commuter, cargo, and child-transport bicycles. Jon and his employees provide outstanding customer service. More details: Six years ago we wanted to get a bicycle for our nanny and also one for my father. After many long conversations with Jon about the pros and cons of different models we decided to purchase a Pilen Lynx for my father and a Linus Mixte for our nanny. The bikes fit the styles and needs of both riders and have been ridden a lot. Both bikes are still in great shape. The bulb for the front light of the Pilen broke and Jon gave me a replacement at no cost. In 2014 we purchased a Workcycles Fr8 so that I could ride around with my four year old daughter and two year old son on the same bike. Jon helped us pick out the accessories that made the most sense for the way we would be using the bike. Our family has absolutely loved this bike. In 2016, after the birth of our third child, we decided to purchase an Onderwater Tandem XL. This bike allowed me to easily transport all three children. The Fr8 can do this too, but the Onderwater allows all three kids to be in front of me and two of them to be able to turn their own pedals. The bike has been amazing. We ride it everywhere in the city. We've even taken a bike camping trip with this bike and the Fr8 from Chicago to Wisconsin and back. Both of our bikes have been used heavily and have been very reliable. The only issues were a problem with the rear wheel on the Onderwater, which Jon fixed at no charge, and a problem with the front rack on the Fr8, which was also fixed at no charge to us. read more

JC Lind is The Best Commuter Bike Resource in the Mid-West We were looking for an authentic "Dutch Bike," and found Jon and his shop, determining he was our region's distributor. Jon and his staff are brilliant, patient, and full of great advice on these bikes. I am a former Cat. II-III racer (over 30 years ago), and my take on "bikes" is based solely on weight and angles, etc., "racing components" and the like. After time spent in Europe (Holland, in particular), we've learned those principles are a bit "off" when buying a "Euro"commuter bike, and that's as it should be! Jon has all the best marquees and the best accessories, and he and his staff are the best at fitment, outfitting, and advice. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon to buy my wife a Dutch style commuter bike, and Jon and staff were up to the task! They helped us select, test ride and outfit the right bike (a Work Cycles "Secret Service") and even get it into the station wagon for transport without even a front wheel removal! They were so helpful and patient with such great experiential advice, I cannot compliment them enough. They helped us get the right accessories (front rack and cargo crate!), and they even talked us out of expensive accessories we thought about, but didn't really need. This is a business and a business model that we respect and admire and will continue to patronize. And, as if that weren't enough, we've also found that Jon and JC Lind's prices are significantly less than other resources we looked at for these same bikes. For example only: One of the few other places in the US we found that could get the bike we bought was listing it for at least $400.00 more, plus shipping costs of about $350.00 with the same fitments! So, not only do you get first class service and courtesy with JC Lind, you get the best price, too. All in all, a great company and people to deal with in a great shoppe in a great neighborhood in Chicago, and a brilliant deal with Jon! I spent many hours studying my options for a lifetime bicycle; one which would not force me to sit in a racing position (down low over the handlebars). I wanted to enjoy the views and the ride itself, so "upright" was my choice. J.C. The store has a wide selection of cruiser and city type bikes, many of which are terrific commuters, as well as a few cargo bikes which, though expensive, I am sure would be terrific fun for the whole family. Jon probably won't like me advertising this, but my bike had an issue with a specific part that broke a few times, and he bent over backwards to resolve it. He once met me on his day off to fix me up. Another time I locked my bike to a fence, gave him the address and he rode to the bike to fix it. Never charged me. On a bike ride yesterday with my sons, one of them got a flat on their rear tire. Knowing I was in the area, intended to go to Village for the repairs. Walking by JC Lind, which I had seen many times, I knew that the smaller shop would be able to handle my repair needs quickly. And, boy, did they. Similar to Steve C, I ordered a VanMoof bike through this shop. I contacted a few shops around the country that sell the bikes, and Jon responded almost instantly via email. He answered all my questions and had the bike shipped out to me (in Texas) within a few days of my first email. I deduct one star only because there was slight confusion with the shipping price, which changed the total. Obviously it's never great to hear you'll be paying more than you thought after agreeing to a price. But it was an honest mistake, so I don't mean to imply anything. And if that's the biggest problem I have doing business with him strictly through emails, I'd imagine in person, things are flawless. (I'd give 4.5 if I could. But I have to reserve 5 for absolute perfection.) So having never actually set foot inside, I don't know if this is a great shop for just casual browsing or anything like that. But certainly if you know they have what you're looking for, you'll be dealing with a knowledgeable, professional staff. read more
