I can't say enough nice stuff and praise that I have for this business. Last fall my husband picked out a bike and was having some modifications and extras put on it, this was going to be the bike he planned to ride after he retired. He wanted a bike with some bells and whistles, he was very particular about this purchase. Saying that he was very excited about this bike is putting it mildly. Sadly, he never got to see the finished product. He had been in/out of the hospital the last few years and this time in he lost his battle to get back home. During the time in the hospital he'd bring up the bike, he'd ask me to pick it up, it was winter and my plate was full. I did stop in one time and spoke with Eric the owner, he assured me not to worry about it, that it would be there waiting on him. That was November, after that time the last thing I had on my mind was the bike, my husband passed away and more time went by. I finally was able to pick up the phone and explain the delay, once again I was told not to worry about it. I inquired if the bike would work for me, gave Eric a few of my details, height and inseam. Although my husband was several inches taller, it was in his torso and he thought it may work for me. Told me to come in and that we'll see, and not to worry about it if it didn't. Well I made it in today, with a few adjustments I'm able to ride it. A different seat, and a fork adjustment seemed to be the trick. Eric also showed me a few of the add on items, a nifty kickstand, suspension that can be turned off, lights, and handlebar mitts. He said my husband had a list of stuff that were must haves, sounds like him. Eric stressed that if I need anything adjusted to come on back in. I really appreciated the wonderful service and his extreme patience. This is one of the last fun things that my husband purchased for himself, I will ride it in his memory and hope there's some type of cosmic energy that he's along for the ride. read more

And before I can even come into this store, the customer service over the phone is absolutely lame/horrible. First off seeing as how you are in the front-facing customer service business, learn how to talk to people and treat people with kindness and respect, its plenty of other stores around. I brought my bike here last year to get a number of things fixed/replaced related to my wheels and brakes. Upon getting my bike back it was some how worse. I finally decided to get this thing fixed and reluctantly brought it back to smart bikes due to its proximity. Let me say this was a terrible experience and I will not be returning. The main guy working who I assume is the own couldn't be less efficient. Rather than helping people in the order they arrive he tries to help everyone simultaneously and ends up wandering around aimless while getting nothing done. What should have been 15 min visit became an hour plus and rather then suggesting I leave and come back they just kept saying we'll be done in 5 min. Then they somehow find something else wrong with the bike and extend the stay. 1. They should just do an assessment of the issue instead of futzing around 2. This the issue they they are fixing are the ones I initially brought my bike in for It's clear the guy knows about bike, but he seems more focused on having insignificant and extended conversations with people rather than fiXing bikes. I was there for 45min before he even asked his other worker to help out. Less than a week later I get a chance to ride my bike again only to realize the problem is still there. Smart Bikes would seem to be one of those shops where only bike messengers get good preferential treatment...NOT SO! They treat everyone with the same courtesies and quick service. I had some gear problems and wanted new brake pads and felt intimated taking my Hybrid bike in for repair. So I boned up on my bike movies and watched Quicksilver and Breaking Away to build confidence before my visit! Just kidding. After all of my nervousness, there was no reason for it. The owner interrupted what he was working on and came over to sell me brake pads. $2 apiece? Nuts cheapo! I did have to come back twice for the pads; once I had lost one of the pads upon leaving the shop, the other time I had been given the identical side. They offered to give me the pads for free, but I couldn't accept and paid the man his $2. (I want my two dollars! To quote another bike enthusiast.) Soon after that I was having gear shifting problems and came back in. A different guy checked it out, changed the gear wire, adjusted the shifter and charged me $5 for everything. Are you kidding me??? That's insanely cheap. See, the people at Smart love bikes, and it shows. They've got a small amount of bike accessories if you need that Halogen bike light or reflective leg band. You don't have to fear the bike enthusiasts at Smart! And there's no need and absolutely no reason one should ever be watching Kevin Bacon in Quicksilver! read more

My bike was stolen 2 weeks ago in Bucktown, and I knew that this store was right near my apartment, so I stopped in. I was prepared to buy a brand new bike, but they didn't have what I wanted. The guy was very friendly, etc, and offered to order one for me on Monday, but I needed one NOW - I ride every day. Not a huge deal, but we ended up buying the exact same bike that was stolen at DJ's down in Hyde Park. However, my new bike needed a basket on the front, and DJ's did not have the quick release basket in stock, so I came back here Monday to pick one up. The experience was not quite as friendly. I walked in and looked around for a few minutes, and finally one of the 2 guys in the back (who were sitting working on things) says "can I help you?" Me: I'm looking for a quick release basket Him: We're out. Me: Ok thanks (head toward the door) Him: Uhhh, we can order one Me: Yeah, so can I. Then, last night my bf went in to buy a patch kit for his tire. After waiting for 20 minutes, he was finally helped. There were 2 guys working on bikes, and one on the phone. He stood at the counter. Couldn't one of those 2 guys found out what he needed? I mean the guy at the counter could have rung him up while he was on the phone. Just overall poor service. I went here on a saturday afternoon to check out some bikes...they had happy hour. What bike shop has happy hour? AWESOME! Ended up hanging out for a while to drink some brew and talk bikes. I was in the market for a single speed road bike... was just going to buy a stock whatever bike, but after a couple visits here and working with the super knowledgable staff (especially Eric the owner) I went the custom build route. Paid about the same amount of money I would have for a stock bike, but got wayyyy better components and got to choose the exact colors/etc for everything. These guys are experts, but not jerks about it. In the multiple times I have been here I have seen everything from hipsters, triathletes, and foreigners come into the store...all treated equally as nice. The store is a little small.. so if you are looking to try out a variety of bikes you might be better suited at a place like Cozy's or Mox. But if you are looking for a tune-up, specific models, or parts this is the place to go. They can get you anything and everything fast...and they already have a good selection of parts in shop. The weirdest part for me? I dont live anywhere near this place... I live in the south loop so its like a 16 mile ride round trip for me. Totally worth it. read more

It hung in the garage so I assumed the rubber on the tires was dry, cracked, etc. I left the bike for new tires and a tune-up. When I went to pick the bike up I was told that the tires are "like brand new" and do not need to be replaced! I was pleasantly surprised! He had given the bike a once-over and for $30 I was on my way. What a great way to build trust with your customers! He could have easily replaced and charged me for new tires. They know their stuff, but more importantly, they make an effort to treat people right. I had a drunk driver totally destroy my last bike while it was locked to a city rack. The next time I go to Smart Bike Parts, I'm bringing along a fire extinguisher to blow aside all the bike hipsters clogging the entryway as if they don't realise other people besides them live in the city. Can't you malinger on the pavement like regular dumbasses? A fire extinguisher to blow back the carefully mussed bedhead. To blow away the 'What Are You Doing In MY Neighbourhood That I've Lived In For TWO WHOLE YEARS' stink eyes. Oh wait, I'm never coming back here. Why would I, when there's Roscoe Village Bikes? See, I brought my bike here for a tune-up a couple of months ago, and it came back to me in worse condition than when I'd dropped it off. At the time, I was disappointed but not overly annoyed since everyone seemed genuinely nice and I believed their stance that my bike was on its last legs and wouldn't twirl like a gypsy again. And how can you come down on someone when they're being nice to you, right? Well, you go and get your bike fixed properly, that's how. After picking up my restored and fully functional bike from Roscoe Village Bikes, I rode back to Smart, my cheeks all aglow with righteous outrage. Let me also mention that, on top of taking a long time with my bike and not doing a great job with it, they misplaced my seat pouch. OK, I'll eat that piece of crow since I should have removed it before going in. And it is also fair to note that the owner (manager?) offered me one of his own as a replacement. Still nice guys, no argument there. But because I have gladly received my curmudgeon's mantle, I had to say something to them. The owner seemed genuinely concerned about my complaints. Further to his credit, he never responded defensively. But neither did he apologise for not getting my bike in working order, so I guess that was a wash. I wasn't there for compensation anyway. I just wanted to say my piece and have them know that they needed to push a little harder in order to be competitive. If I wanted them to fail, I'd just complain privately, but these guys don't really deserve that. One thing that DID diggle my dirk was a female bike hipster who kept sauntering back and forth as I was explaining my situation. It was like a gang rumble out of a 50s musical, the way she'd pass so close that we'd almost brush shoulders. I'd never seen her here before and, to my knowledge, had nothing whatsoever to do with this whole saga. Yet here she was, posturing mightily, shooting me stink eyes as if to say, 'Oh, such a hater, with your complaints.' Yeah, like her entire being wasn't one big complaint against nature. Back off, chick, before I get out my fire extinguisher. I'm an equal-opportunity extinguisherer, yeah? Bottom line: For those of you who have been done right by Smart, awesome. Right on. Mad props. So, I'm not really a bike enthusiast. I wouldn't even say I'm a bike hobbyist, but I am a little broke and the weather is getting nice...which is what brought me to get my rear brake repaired. I was recommended this place by a friend who told me they're really good, and not pretentious bike folk. That sounded like the place for me (plus, it's super close to where I live), so I went. Let me preface this next bit by saying that they fixed my bike. I needed a rear brake tube replaced, and they guy did it very quickly, while I waited in the shop. I'm happy with this, and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg, and I do truly appreciate that. However, When I rolled my bike through the door, the three guys stood behind the counter and as I said 'Hello', they just stared at me. I thought perhaps asking why I had rolled my crappy bike through the door would be a good start but, instead, I said "I'm here to see about getting a brake fixed". Again, not a bike enthusiast. Just someone who wants to ride her bike every so often. The guy came around, looked at my bike, and told me it would cost me $20 but other than that I shouldn't waste money on this old bike. I can get behind this type of honesty, and I'm not a delicate flower of a person, but I really just needed my damn brake fixed. I won't go on with the play by play of this interaction, but I'll just say I was disappointed overall with the customer service. There's no reason to be rude to a customer, especially if that customer is being perfectly polite to you. I don't believe I'll be taking my shitty bike here again. I don't need anyone to tell me how shitty it is- I'm a grown person, and I know the difference between an $800 bicycle and the piece of rolling garbage I bought for $60 on craigslist so that I could ride to the grocery store. Bike shop culture is kind of weird. Some shops are really condescending and pretentious, especially to women. Smart Bike Parts is NOT one of those shops. A little east of here there are some shops that I avoid going to, so I was looking for a good go-to shop for basic parts and questions. I stopped in to buy some grease and pedals, and started talking to one of the mechanics, Casey, about the issues I was having. He rode my bike to try to help me determine what was making the mystery noises I had. He gave me some advice on what to do to fix it myself and didn't talk down to me or pressure me into paying for them to fix it. He also recommended me a pedal that I can service myself that he gave me a great deal on, and gave me some grease in a bag because they were out of tubes to sell me. Overall I was pretty happy. The next day I came back because I was hoping to buy a tool, but they didn't have one. So Casey helped me out again and checked a few things for me and recommended some other ways to get my problem taken care of, such as West Town Bike's open shop. This is a shop where the people really care about bikes and their customers. It is now one of my go-to shops for parts and advice. Casey is great! read more

Just read a news story that the owner, Eric, caught a purse snatcher while riding his bike to work. The robber snatched the purse from a 75 year old lady and Eric rode after the bum even though the guy claimed to have a gun. I've never shopped at this place and don't live near Logan Square. Love this place. It's not in my neighborhood, so I don't get here as often as I'd like, but that's probably a good thing for my wallet. Service is great; the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I had to order a bunch of stuff that I needed that the shop didn't have in stock, and the owner was really helpful with picking out what I needed and cut me a nice deal for my parts. I loved the old digs and am a fan of anywhere that you can get a beer and shoot the shit while getting your errands done. It makes errand running slightly less inducing of the suicidal thoughts. The new location has the same good stuff but with a bigger space, thus making room for more good stuff. I needed a new rear light and though they were out of my beloved frog lights I was able to upgrade to Krog's beetle for the same price as the frog. It's hot pink. That makes me happy. It will match the hot pink bike shorts I bought today as well. For some reason this place really wants your bike to be like a rainbow of beautiful colors. I also want this. This little shop is right off Milwaukee Ave., and if you ever bike north of the Kimball/Diversey intersection, then you've probably ridden past it. Mostly mail order, it's always best to call ahead and check if they have the part because they might have to special order it for you. They get orders in every day, so it's never a long wait (3-5 days) for specialized parts. The sweet deal though is they specialize in higher-end gear. If you're a serious weight-weenie, then talk gear with these guys to get the ultimate set-up. More importantly, this place is filled with the nicest characters. Talk shop with local bike enthusiasts or just shoot the bull with the local ice cream guy looking to just pump his tires. read more

I want to give this place more stars b/c the people seem nice, but the whole experience turned out to be a hassle. In retrospect I should have gone somewhere else, somewhere closer to where I live. After moving from SF I brought them my bike slightly disassembled and in need of a new front wheel. Working in a bike shop is maybe a stressful and busy environment, but I was disappointed that it took them three times as long to have my bike ready than they told me. And the front wheel has been squirrelly ever since in the sense that it would be impossible to ride no-handed, even for a few seconds. I've also had other minor quirks previously unhad since their reassembly and new wheel. A lot of what one would call hipster regulars came in while I was waiting and they seemed to assume priority. Maybe that's acceptable, but not really professional. Also, they removed the original headlamp from my bike but forgot to give it back to me. I called the next day and they said they'd put it aside for me. When I went back, no one knew where it was and they gave me one that I realized when I got home, was not mine. Oh well. Anyway, this was just my experience here. I found better options :) read more

I bought a late 80's Schwinn road frame and needed a new headset and bottom bracket installed to complete my build so off I went visiting local bike shops. I love biking and have almost always repaired and tuned up my bikes through the years mostly because I like to do things myself but also partly because employees can be jerks. Anyone who rides and has needed parts knows what I'm talking about. Visited several shops on the northside asking for a threaded headset with no help. Guess that kind of request must be real amusing because a couple guys actually laughed at my questions and request (ill be skipping those shops when I buy a higher end road bike next season.....bet you don't think that's funny). Saw Smart Bike Parts had a large online selection so I dropped in and was pleasantly surprised. Guy at front was very helpful and we talked a bit about my build offering some great free advice. Even gave me a few bolts I needed. I brought in my frame and had the headset and bottom bracket installed for about $50. 24 hours and a text message later my frame was ready with a brand new smooth headset and bottom bracket. Was so happy with the work I bought several feet of cable and other parts the next day. Great prices and the staff I dealt with was nice. Ill definitely be back. PS- I'm no hipster. I physically can't wear skinny jeans (chunky Mexican here), I don't own a small tight cycling hat, have no tattoos that look like clip art and I religiously wear a helmet and follow traffic laws when riding in the city. read more
