Really great service and bartender was very knowledgeable and quick to take drink requests at the bar area. A warm and inviting Irish themed pub with DELICIOUS food. The cheese plate was affordable and big (even though we ordered a small) and my roast beef panini was to die for. If you look up "cozy" in the dictionary, I'm pretty sure there would be a picture of the inside of J.Gough's. This little neighborhood watering hole is pretty small, but it feels very warm and welcoming, and it's not at all divey. They have a HUGE selection of whiskeys, which makes my Old Fashioned-loving hubby very happy. They also serve a limited menu of food, which is surprisingly tasty. I've tried the buffalo chicken mac and cheese and the BBQ chicken flatbread, which are both solid. So not only is a this a nice little spot to duck in for a drink, but you can have a legit dinner as well. Oh, and prices are very reasonable, so there's yet another feather in its cap! Also, I heard that the name is supposed to be a play on the term "jagoff." I have no idea if that's true, but if it is, it makes me love this place even more. Cheers! read more

They have an exhaustive menu of American, scotch, Irish, and ... whiskies, and if you're not sure what to choose, the bar tenders always have great recommendations. Like I was looking for a smoky bourbon and one of the guys suggested the peated bourbon in the picture which is amazing. Also to top it off, they also have delicious food. I waited months and months for J. Goughs to open. I basically acted like a crazy ex girlfriend driving slowly down Murray to see if it had opened and stalking the Facebook page weekly. I think this is why I'm so disheartened about my actual visit. The food and drinks were just okay. We tried the deviled eggs (nothing special, but alright), potato salad (the best dish I had and very flavorful), and mac and cheese (pretty bland). The decorating and ambiance were also not my favorite, and felt a little odd. I think I was expecting something different, but was a little confused with layout and seating within the place when I walked in. My overall experience was alright. The only thing that was really good about J. Goughs was the service and the liquor selection. Our server was very responsive and great at her job. Another guy there (possibly a bartender, maybe an owner?) helped me order an old fashioned with bourbon after being a little underwhelmed with my vanilla mule (which mainly tasted like ginger beer). My friend did enjoy her mules and actually ordered multiple of them, but I wasn't that impressed. The cocktails were also a little pricey. I'm really sad to say that although I left J. Goughs feeling pretty good about my visit, I'm not exactly in a hurry to go back. Quickie review; noted it was hope since FRI, HAD to go. Pix to follow, had forgotten phone. Website exists, but no content yet; check FB, where they answer questions and give hours. The hours don't seem to be set quite yet, but we went noonish on SUN. They'll be open until 6p tonite. Kelly greeted us warmly and got us liquid sustenance in short order; (my) K had an Angry Orchard Cider and I had a (Roundabout?) Rye Ale, which was DELISH. Refreshing, yet bit of a bite on the finish. Looks like there may be some choice on the whiskey, be it Irish, Scotch or domestic flavors. I noted Kelly was performing a proper pour of Guinness, which was encouraging. The menu is abbreviated at this point; hoping for burgers but the Margarita Flatbread and Buffalo Chicken Mac n Cheese both pleased. The freshness of the basil was the pre-bite impression; the tomato of the sauce and mozzarella complimented and texture and taste of the bread will make it something we get again. The mac and cheese was rich and zippy; they also had ham and ... ugh a 3rd option, but the Buffalo Chicken make this a destination. Ambiance was just what I appreciate from a pub; forest green on the walls but plenty of dark wood. Stopping for the night in Pittsburgh on our way to Baltimore. Looking for a tavern still serving food at 9:30 on a weeknight and found this gem tucked away in a quiet working class neighborhood. I came here on a whim with a group of five early on a Saturday evening. We were seated quickly and greeted promptly by our waitress. They have a nice variety of whiskey and several specialty cocktails. The prices for drinks was fair. J. Gough's has a small menu but the options are nice. Several flat breads to choose from, a nice mac and cheese with options for adding seafood or buffalo chicken, and a few sandwich choices. I enjoyed a very filling meatball sandwich. The bun was extremely fresh and it was stuffed with excellent seasoned meatballs. I like the atmosphere of Gough's. It has the feel of a real pub. Its kind of dark and cozy. I was a little confused at this venue. The food was very good; although limited. No one in my party ate pork and thus, were limited with menu options. I must say, this review is not timely; we were there a few months ago. I recall the flatbread being very good. What confused me was that the staff was very friendly, the food was good, but there were not a lot of patrons. I'll head back there and update this. This place is pretty close to a good friend's apartment so any bar within walking distance is cool in my book. The atmosphere here is really cool, having a slightly modern yet rustic appeal. I believe this place touts itself as a whiskey bar, and their selection is impressive, however I am not a whiskey drinker. They do cater to beer drinkers, however, and the bourbon barrel ale they have on tap is quite delicious! Their food selections aren't the greatest, and this is where the lower rating comes from. I ordered the chili, which happened to be on special that day. The flavor was good, but the chunks of ground beef were considerably large (think meatballs) and a couple of them were cold. The soup itself was a little hotter than lukewarm. I also had the pita/hummus app, which wasn't anything special. Two of my friends had differing variations of the mac and cheese (one crab, one buffalo). They said their dishes were good, although one also said there's was on the colder side as well. Prices were reasonable, with pint drafts ranging from $4 - $7. Overall I'd come back for the drinks and atmosphere, but probably grab something to eat first. read more

I have been excited about visiting J Gough's since they originally started construction. Since they opened, I have been there a few times - and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to grab a drink and watch a game/hang out with friends. I am a whiskey drinking beginner - which is one reason why I love this place so much. I explained this to one of the bartenders, Chad, and he made me the perfect old fashioned with Templeton Rye. Plus, their food is amazing! I have had their hummus, cheese plate, and mac n cheese - and my husband always gets their meatball sandwich. I had their mac n cheese tonight and I will be getting it frequently! I am a mac n cheese purist and this is the best mac n cheese I have ever had that was not made in my grandmother's kitchen. We need more places like this in Greenfield! It's a fantastic whiskey bar with an enormous selection of bottles. The family is the original Gough family from the Whiskey Rebellion and the manager Bill is friendly and positive. I had a Manhattan and a shot of WhistlePig neat. My husband and I just tried this place for the first time. Overall, the space is small but inviting, as a neighborhood pub should be. For dinner, I had the mac and cheese with buffalo chicken, and he had the pulled pork with potato salad. Both dishes were great. The mac and cheese was creamy and the buffalo chicken had a nice kick - perfect for a chilly night. The pulled pork had good flavor, though it was the slightest bit dry - a ramekin of sauce on the side would have made it perfect. The potato salad that came with the sandwich tasted homemade, and was much better than most restaurant potato salads. We had some beer (need a beer list!) and a wine (average for a Pgh bar) which were fine, then a smoky Laphroaig scotch, which was a perfect way to round out the evening. Everything was very reasonably priced, and the service was great. We'll be back! read more

One of a few places in Pittsburgh that you could truly characterize as an upper-tier whiskey bar. Their selection of spirits is fantastic. Beer variety is average, but there's enough to find something to drink if whiskey isn't your thing. The food menu is small, but the dishes they do have are very good. Finally decided to walk down the street and dine at J Gough's and will definitely be back. Started with the small cheese tray which had a nice selection of meats, cheeses and extras. Menu says for 1-3 but there would be plenty as an appetizer for 4-5 diners. Hubby had the meatball sandwich which was really big and tasty. Along with a side of equally good potato salad he had plenty to eat and take home for another day. I opted for the Margherita flatbread which was 8 slices of cheesy deliciousness. I've enjoyed the food I've had every time I've been here. The service has always been top notch. I'm really torn on this. Our experience was very mixed. As others have noted, the whiskey selection here is excellent, and very reasonably priced. The food we had (meat & cheese sampler & basil mushroom flatbread) was all very well-made. The atmosphere is very nice - clean, modern, and cozy. Our server was very friendly... but seemed to be extremely inexperienced. We had a party of 8 there for the bourbon & bluegrass night, and our server forgot to bring several drinks, did not place food orders that were put in over the course of the evening until everyone at the table ordered - meaning that some people waited over an hour to get their food, because we did not all order at once. We had separate checks, and three of the four checks were missing items - not something I would complain about (we corrected ours, it was only missing a drink or two) but it's also not going to help the business succeed. I will absolutely be back to try again, because I think this place has the potential to be an excellent whiskey bar. But last night's experience showed that there's still a lot of room to grow & learn for this pub. read more

Good grill cheese and a huge whiskey selection. It's cozy in there too, it almost makes up for the racist regular who asks what country you're from to non-white patrons. Wish they had a regular burger on the menu though, but I hear they have a burger on the weekends when they grill. read more
