LOVED our dinner at this place. We came here for dinner while visiting Pittsburgh. The first thing that struck me was the interior decor. Very industrial and moody with an open kitchen/preparation area that adds some intrigue. I do like to see the happenings of what's going on as someone with zero attention span. Service was excellent. George was fantastic. He kept a close eye on us without being overbearing. He anticipated what we might need so we didn't spend one second waiting to order anything. The menu is not endless or overwhelming which, presumably, allows them to focus on the items that are listed. I have decision panic so it was kinda nice to have less things to choose from. They asked if there were any allergies or dietary restrictions so I mentioned my vegetarianism. George went through the menu and pointed out the vegetarian options including what seems like it is vegetarian but isn't. They had TWO vegetarian entree options and fortunately the non-mushroom one was something I probably would have ordered anyway: pesto with walnuts, arugula, and a very generous amount of grated cheese. To start, I ordered the Brussels sprouts whichc I was warned had fish sauce. This was fine but nothing that blew me away. GF, on the other hand, loved this. GF ordered the wedge which was brought to our attention as vegetarian with the bacon on the side, which was her request. We ended up sharing both, a large part of that was because hers came out first and I couldn't wait but I'm so glad because the wege was FANTASTIC. The dressing? holy fuck pure ecastasy. The wedge was more like a filet shape which was much easier to eat. Who decided on the wedge shape anyway? The lettuce was so fresh and crisp and went wonderfully with that orgasmic dressing and breadcrumbs. Back to my pasta. Also delectable. Noodles were al dente. The sauce was creamy and packed that pesto umami flavor. The walnuts were a really nice contrast in texture. Everything about it absolutely fucking slapped. GF ordered the mushroom entree which came served on a bed of barley which, don't mind if I do, had a few forkfuls to "sample" for "my review". Again, so fucking good. Because it was my birthday, George provided a dessert (yuzu maybe?) that was served inside a meringue-esque igloo, creamy perfect balance of sweet and tart custard with some berry business underneath. Wonderful. I almost forgot their spectacular cocktails! Holy shit, literally they have a CORN CHIP cocktail that I could not pass up. It comes with two massive cornchips on top of a flavored foam. When you bring the glass up to sip, the cornchips are right in front of your nose and their aroma sets the stage for the drink which was STRONG. It wasn't as corn chip forward as I expected but I understand that flavor is probaly hard to create. For my second drink, I ordered the blue one which was refreshing, light, and really good. GF ordered a spritz which was gorgeous "it was good". For second round, I picked out some uranium thing that was very cucumbery, GF says, "it was good". I just read it outloud to her. "it's true!" This place has changed so many times over the years. Had the chance to stop here trice recently and had great experiences both times. Their lunch menu is very limited, but each thing on it is delicious. I've had the commoner burger, the fried chicken sandwich, and the chopped salad. All are amazing. The commoner burger is probably my favorite and is one of the best smash burgers in the city. Perfectly cooked, fresh meat, and every bite has so much flavor. The Commoner was a decent spot, especially with it being right inside the hotel. The atmosphere is nice and it is convenient if you are already staying there. We really enjoyed the bartender. He was friendly, personable, and made our time at the bar enjoyable. We ordered a glass of wine and a dirty martini, and both drinks were great. My boyfriend ordered the hamburger and fries and said they were really good. I had the salmon, and while I usually do not mind salmon that is slightly raw, mine felt undercooked in a way that just did not work for me. It may have simply been their style, but it was not my favorite dish. Overall, it was an okay experience. We definitely like coming here for drinks, but the food did not fully meet my expectations this time. read more

My husband and I came to the commoner for breakfast while visiting Pittsburgh. The hostess sitting us told us the breakfast was the best in town. Unfortunately, we'd disagree. My husband and I both ordered iced lattes, which to our surprise they did not have any flavored syrup. My husband got the sausage egg sandwich and added a side of French fries, I was wanting something light so I ordered the yogurt parfait. It was piled high with fruit, however underneath the yogurt serving was quite small. For many years, my husband ate weekday business meals here, and he thought that the foods were average to good. Most recently, I made a reservation for a Saturday brunch. The seating hostess and waitress provided timely and polite service. The chefs cooked our foods in a reasonable time. Here are my ratings for what my husband and I ate: French Toast - 4 stars - I ate this entree of three slices of French toast that were topped with lemon ricotta, morello cherries, and candied almonds. On the side was syrup. The lemon was strong, but I liked the flavors. Eggs Benedict - 3.5 stars - My husband ate this entree. Two English muffins were topped with Canadian bacon, poached eggs, and hollandaise. The eggs were only slightly runny so could have been cooked less. On the side were chunks of crispy potatoes that tasted very good. Sausage - 3.5 stars - My husband ate these two sausage patties. We were not sure of their exact ingredients and flavor, but they tasted decent. We drank hot tea and apple juice that tasted very good. read more

I went to visit friends in town and they picked this location for us to meet for brunch. We made reservations through Open Table and made getting our table quickly. The restaurant has fantastic design and decor. The service was attentive from the hosts to the waitstaff and bartender. Started with a drink at the bar while waiting for everyone to arrive. Ordered The Boi of the Isles which sounded awesome with banana tullamore d.e.w., hot coffee, banana cardamaro whipped cream, tullamore banana chip and oh it was!! For brunch, We had Eggs Benedict with canadian bacon, poached eggs, hollandaise, crispy potatoes and the English muffin was perfectly crispy! The Malted Waffle had blueberry ricotta, blackberries and pistachio butter. It was fresh and super tasty! I walked into a very contemporary, dark, moody, ambience which is probably not the vibe for a sunny Friday morning but I can see how it serves a purpose for later on in the day. I am a foodie for sure and this experience was a flavor explosion!! The beets were a texture fantasy with a crunch and sweet savory home run. And the Striploin?!!!!! Filet tenderness with a better than NY strip flavor (how is it possible?). Second only to my NYC Wagyu A5 favorite. I was a little hesitant when I first saw the menu, but nothing disappointed at all! We booked a reservation on Open Table. The Commoner is located in the Hotel Monaco downtown. For our appetizers, I ordered the spicy crab (chili crunch, Gruyère, and cheese bread) and my boyfriend ordered the winter salad. For our entrees, I ordered the salmon (stuffed kale, caramelized celery root, roasted citrus sauce) and he ordered the maitake (roasted barley, egg yolk, peppercorn sauce). For dessert I ordered the chocolate ganache and my boyfriend ordered some kind of deconstructed cheesecake. Overall our food was great. I was staying at this lovely hotel, and The Commander happened to be conveniently located downstairs. After a long day, we made it just in time to grab some food before they closed. The interior is elegant and chic, with dim lighting that sets the perfect mood for an evening cocktail after a day of meetings. I also saw the space during the daytime--it's a nice spot to work, grab a bite, or enjoy a drink. For dinner, we kept it simple and ordered burgers with fries. The burger was decent--not particularly exciting, but fine. However, I did find it overpriced for what we got. I also ordered an old-fashioned to pair with the meal, and it was satisfactory. My guest felt similarly about their food. For dessert, I was intrigued by the cheesecake custard but unsure if I'd like it. The restaurant has a dark ambiance and calming mood, especially for a busy morning. We were seated promptly and our order taken quickly. We ordered majority of the breakfast options to enjoy. The food is roughly $20/per person. Our breakfast for 5 people was over $100. We ordered the cappuccino, which was decent. The food quality was just okay; I ordered the breakfast sandwich and got a hamburger bun to hold it together. I wasn't expecting that. It tasted great though, I just thought it would be something that matched the pricing. My husband enjoyed his bacon and eggs, as did our children. There's not much you can do to make them fancy and gourmet, but they do charge a lot for it. Overall it was a nice meal, we'd definitely consider it for our next visit to Pittsburgh. read more

I was blown away by The Commoner. Tucked away in Hotel Monaco is one of the best restaurants in the city! Immediately upon entering, the moddy vibe gets you ready and prepared for a great meal. My husband and I wanted to get a seat but we didn't have a reservation. Little did we know, it was the Justin Timberlake concert so they were all booked up for the evening. The manager got us on a waitlist and then eventually able to get a seat! We started the meal with drinks. My husband just got a ginger Ale, but he said it was so crispy. I got a drink called, Challen Ice, which included a tall ice cube that perfectly cooled the drink down as I drank. The drink was a perfect combination of gin, creme de menthol, allspice, coconut milk, and blue curacao. I've never had a drink quite like this one. Both of us wanted to try out the smash burger because we heard that it's the best in the city, and it did not disappoint! The fries had some type of garlic or truffle oil. The cheesy dip was the perfect pairing for the fries. And that smash burger had all the pertinent and necessary elements: creamy cheese, special sauce, caramelized onions...all the good stuff! It definitely lived up to its name! The manager was so kind and gave us a free dessert for waiting for a seat. We chose the cheesecake custard. Boy was this dish under sold on the menu. The cheesecake custard was perfectly creamy. Underneath, there was caramel and pineapple that went so well with the custard. The star of the show was the strudel-like granola. I cannot describe the taste but it had a salty, buttery taste like popcorn that was the perfect salty pairing to the sweet custard. Overall, this restaurant has made it into my top 10 in the city. I recently ordered breakfast room service/takeout from The Commoner while staying at Hotel Monaco. When staying at the hotel, they have a door hanger that you can fill out with your choices & what time you'd like your meal to be delivered. We ordered the steak & eggs, frittata, and berry bowl. The morning of our breakfast, we got a call to the room about an hour before our order was due for delivery. They said that even though the door hanger stated the steak & eggs was listed at $14, it is actually $41. I didn't even pay attention to the price when ordering & obviously $14 for steak & eggs is not correct but I feel that that is a pretty big price gap to be listed incorrectly. Additionally, the frittata says it comes with potatoes on the door hanger, but it actually doesn't. Those are my only complaints. The food was good and we enjoyed it but I feel like having the correct menu would make for a better experience read more

Got some brunch here after the EQT 10K. Great place as it's open early! The staff were very nice and our waitress was very helpful. Despite it being a bit busy, the food came out relatively fast. The mushroom scramble was pretty good and the side of potatoes were made soo well! I loved the seasoning/crispiness of the potatoes. The coffee was delicious too! Prices were reasonable for a hotel restaurant. The moody look of the place created an intimate place to catch up. It was full but we didn't feel like we were on top of one another. Stopped in for brunch. Tried the two vegetarian options on the menu that were not sweet: the roasted vegetable frittata a the burrata sandwich. The frittata came with asparagus and spinach and a thin layer of cheese and a side of crispy smashed potatoes. The dish was good but not spectacular. The sandwich however was great! It was an open face sandwich on sour dough layered with burrata and a sun-dried tomato and pine nut relish. This was a really unique dish that was surprisingly good. Loved it! read more

My first visit here was last year when I was vacationing, and I completely fell in love with the Maitake mushroom dish. I have honestly not stopped thinking about it. So of course when I came back to Pittsburgh this year, I absolutely had to come back to The Commoner. My review was five stars last year and it still has not changed this year. I was there late both times, before the kitchen closed. Service was phenomenal both times, the server was very attentive and did not let my glass be lower than half full at all times. I really like how cozy it feels late at night, with the lights being dim. The place feels kind of classy old school with a twist of modern vibes. The food and quality has been consistent both times. Ingredients tasted fresh, especially the starters that are served cold. I was also told by my server this year, that the chef had recently changed back to the original recipe of the mushroom dish. I am SUPER happy about that because that is literally what got me to come back this year! My husband agrees because I have raved about this for an entire year before finally taking him here this month. Can't wait to be back! P.S. I ordered a Moscato wine. The herb butter on the bread really enhanced the flavours and the panna cotta was fabulous- with this amazing almond topping. For drinks we had the Playful Cloud and this high proof manhattan type drink that the bartender recommended.
