Check your receipts. They're charging dramatically more than the menu prices without you realizing!! Pet peeve of mine and I'm seeing it more and more. How many folks just pay without looking? This isn't an oversight, it seems intentional. Jalapeño Margarita: Menu says $10.50, charged $13.50 (wow!). Old Fashioned: Menu said $9, charged $9.50. Two visits, two experiences. I am averaging them together. I am a flexetarian eater, which means I am 99% vegetarian, I like some seafood and I won't get mad if there is some meat, sometimes I do need bacon, but I would appreciate options that are meatless. This is not really a place for vegetarians, definitely not vegans. They have a veggie patty and a fettuccine Alfredo that you can order without the chicken. There is bacon in a lot of things. First visit was with my sister in law and father in law. We meet there about 4:30pm which was good because by 5:30 there was a long wait. We got a nice booth. The server was attentive and answered all of our questions. We got the crab dip which was delicious. I ordered the salmon, even though it is Atlantic and not wild caught. It was very good and cooked perfectly. My father in law ordered the pork chop (the special) and my sister in law ordered the chopped steak. The feedback was that the pork chop was good in flavor but a bit hard to chew because it was very thick. The chopped steak was like a Salisbury steak and the feedback was that it was very good. We were each able to get sides. The special had mashed potatoes which went great with the gravy. I got the Gouda Mac and cheese and a baked potato. The Mac and cheese was very rich (there was bacon in it) and I couldn't finish it. The baked potato was just as you expect a baked potato to be. We ordered a cupcake and a slice of cake for dessert. I love that the cupcake was a normal sized cupcake (maybe a little small) so I wasn't over indulging in dessert. I would rate this trip as a 5 stars easy. My second trip was with my husband and sister in law. We got there around 4:40 and were seated within 5 minutes. This time we had a booth in the bar area with the expectation that the service would be the same as the other rooms, it was just available first. So we waited, after the third time the same server passed our table and looked right at us with no acknowledgment we decided that must not be our server. After 15 minutes we decided if no one came to get our drinks and appetizers in the next 5 minutes we would leave. Just before we were going to leave a server came over and said hi. No apology for the wait, she was just ready to take our drink order. We asked about the potato skins and she said it came with 4 so we go two orders of those since we were hungry and placed the rest of our order right then (a ribeye quesadilla, fettuccini Alfredo with no meat, a Lauren burger with no bacon and a veggie patty and a side of brussel sprouts). I did ask about the veggie patty and was told it is a black bean patty made in house. The potato skins arrived and each of the four pieces is half of a large potato with cheese melted on it. Since we said no bacon we got no green onions, we did get sour cream and some ranch. We dove in because by now we have been here for almost 40 minutes and this is the first thing to come to our table. (Thankfully we bring our own water). The rest of the food came out well after we decided not to fill up on potatoes. The feedback on the quesadilla was that it was good. The feedback on the fettuccini was delicious (though I personally thought more broccoli could have been added given there was no meat). My burger was not a black bean patty. I did a check and it did appear to be in house made, not an impossible burger. I thought maybe it is chick peas or white beans. It did taste good so I went with it. The brussel sprouts were good, a little salty but prepared well. Our server did not come back for a while and I had talked up the cupcakes to my husband. When she came she asked if we needed boxes, then left and came back with the boxes and the check. We asked if could get dessert. The options she gave is really where I felt things went wrong. She said "you can tell me what you want and I can box it up to go for you or we can close out here and I can meet you at the counter to buy them to go separately." No option to stay. I felt we were being kicked out. It took longer than I expected to complete our payment given we were no offered the option to stay at the table. We then went over and got three cupcakes and a piece of Oreo pie to go. This visit would get 2 stars. To summarize: we waited almost 20 minutes before any one said hi, the server was not engaging or friendly with us, we received wrong information about the veggie patty, we were not given the option to eat dessert at the table. I have a gift card a neighbor gave us, so another trip will be the deciding factor. I am averaging and rounding up on my stars because anyone can have an off day. I do wish there were more options for vegetarians. A plate of sides would be an easy answer. Maybe not putting bacon in everything. Onions are a great option to replace bacon for flavor. read more

Having moved to Marion recently, we've happily discovered J Hartman's. Love everything about this place. The food has been spot on every time. The onion appetizer is better than anywhere I have had as is the ruben. I think I've ordered it the last 3x I was there because it's just that good. Everything we've tried has been delicious ! Took family from out of town there and they loved it as well. Service is always great but special shout out to Carli who is quite a gem as servers go !!! She made one of our visits even extra special. We'd never been there before Helene so I don't know how much the decor changed but it's beautiful inside and has great music. When another restaurant cancelled our Valentine's Day plans, we scrambled and wound up at J Hartman's on one of the busiest holidays of the year. We were delighted that they were able to seat us, especially as what followed was excellent food and delightful service. Our server ended up being who we'd spoken to on the phone for call-ahead seating, and she was thrilled to put a face to the voice. When the bar lacked the olive juice necessary to make a martini as dirty as we requested, the owner herself came over to apologize. (The martini was still excellent!) And all our dietary restrictions were gladly accommodated, with insightful recommendations and flexibility from our host. We'd definitely come back! read more

First off...if there is a wait, sit at the bar! I was happily surprised to find a Bulleit Old Fashioned on the drink menu and Alex had a local Hazy IPA, both very pleasant! We started with garlic cheese curds...warm, squeaky, slightly melty goodness! Next up was a salad simply kissed with a pungent Caesar dressing. We each opted for a ribeye and baked potato as our entree. The char on the steak was perfect, and a very generous portion. The potato was not as fluffy as I prefer, but was still enjoyable! I can't remember a worse meal I have had! We had the STEAKHOUSE ONION app. dried out and at best OK. For dinner I went with the ATLANTIC SALMON a dried-out piece of something (Never saw a piece of salmon with a white color) with something they call bacon/onion relish that was some slop covering the salmon. The food was delicious and more than one could anticipate! My French dip might as well have come from France. The Au jus was a soup on its own. My one side was a salad which was a meal in itself- cold crisp and packed with vegetables. My friend had a burger which she reported was just the right temperature and also delicious. Her side was a bowl of that day's which she also said was perfect with a lot of flavor in a perfectly smooth creamy base. The best part was the service. Despite the fact that our server works full time for the school board, she was energetic and friendly as well as incredibly helpful. She made the meal with her attention to detail that created perfect ambiance. To full for dessert, or server showed me to the dessert case and I felt like a kid in a candy store. Service was good- we sat at the bar during busy hours and bartender was attentive and drink quality never sufferers. Such a good place! Our server was soooo kind! We started with the onion, I got the Charleston medallions with Gouda Mac, highly recommend! Rest of my group got the chile lime chicken, Carolina burger, and quesadilla, all were fantastic!!! Customer service was fantastic as well, we got a burger we didn't like and they happily switched it with another one. I love a small business that does it right! I finished it off with the strawberry cookie (baked in house by a local baker) was unlike any cookie I've ever had, will get some for the road! My wife and I are faithful customers to J Hartmans, or we were until tonight. My wife ordered a salad, I ordered the sirloin steak, baked potato and side salad and a Diet Coke. Salad was great but steak was nothing but gristle. I had ate about 5 bites of my potato. They were very busy so I just told them to take my meal off of the ticket because I didn't want my wife sitting and waiting for me to eat. The waitress started making excuses for the quality of the steak and said she would adjust my ticket. She adjusted it by taking 11.00 off my ticket therefore charging me 9.00 for a side salad. We eat here at least once a month and actually this was our second time this month alone. We supported them before Hurricane Helene and have supported them since. My side salad ended up costing almost as much as my wife's full salad, and was as much as the Wedge Salad. Not saying we won't return someday but it will be a long while before we return . read more

We were traveling through town on our way home from a short trip to the mountains. We decided to try this restaurant as we didn't recognize the name, and we are the kind of people who like trying new places and risking the experience. Went in thinking it would be "eh", and to our surprise it was delicious! Our server was nice, the restaurant seemed clean, and most importantly the food was great! We ordered fried cheese curds to start, these were my favorite part of the meal. I ordered bbq chicken with Mac and cheese and my other half had steak and a potato. Can't complain other than it was a lot of food and I couldn't eat my entire meal :). My other half ordered Oreo pie for dessert and to be honest, it wasn't as good as his homemade Oreo pie, but it wasn't bad either. The pie is what gave this restaurant a 4, otherwise, I'd give it a 5!! read more

The owner John doesn't know his business when it comes to preparing steaks. He says it's impossible to cook a filet well done without burning it. Then I try to tell him if you can't cook it properly then cancel the steak. He insisted on he was going to cook it. Finally came out and was not well done. He was confrontational about said he was not going to lose his money. He cares about a dollar not about customers or there experience's. We paid for everything ate nothing and left. Went to hook and anchor and got a great steak cooked perfectly with no problems. So we learned a Seafood restaurant cook's better steak's than a steak house. So I would not recommend this restaurant for anyone. read more

An unexpected pleasant surprise in the mountains. We stopped here on our way back from Asheville to Banner elk where we were staying for a week and we were not disappointed. There is a lake community closely located to Lake James North Carolina and it would appear propagates this restaurant/bar and grill. A decent menu with custom drink offerings coupled with fair prices and casual but nice dining surroundings; This is a definite dining option for you in the area which is somewhat remote and does not offer such casual dining in the vein of many restaurants that you may know nationally.
