This has been a favorite for years, and over the years we've noticed a strong steady decline. It's not uncommon to order a BBQ plate and it just be half inedible. You get tough pieces that just aren't appetizing. I hadn't gone here in about 2 years and decided to stop in and give them another try. I ordered the BBQ and Shrimp combo plate, and as usual half the bbq was tough and inedible. But while trying to eat the bbq and chewing hard because of the tough meat I found a bone in the bbq. The bone broke my tooth from the force I was having to chew the meat. This has been the most expensive bbq plate I've ever had after having to get a root canal and crown. I won't ever go back. In the area hiking, and on the way back home, decided to stop at one of the local establishments to join an early dinner and some small town cooking. They have plenty of seating and the menu has lots and lots or choices. The prices are very affordable and the sides were plenty to choice from. We ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and Thursday's special (meatloaf). All the food was fresh, tasted great and the food came out immediately. Our server was Sabrina and she was absolutely amazing. Super busy with a short wait at 7pm on a weekday but at 7:30 there were a half-dozen empty tables. I arrived at just the tail end of the dinner rush. Friendly service from three different waitresses who took my order, brought my drink and kept it refreshed and another who cleared the plates and brought my check. Teamwork clearly visible and that meant I was never trying to hunt someone down for service. Excellent. I chose the "Smoked Chicken Half" which only took a couple of minutes before it was set down at the table. A nice portion and with two sides (most are potatoes, rice or beans that don't do well with a keto diet), it looked good. It was actually quite dry. Yes, I know smoked chicken is going to be a bit but this turned out tough and in desperate need of sauce. Maybe I didn't get a good one so I'd be willing to give them another try as the BBQ pulled pork plate that went to the next table over looked good. Service was great, the chicken was not. We took a ride and ended up in Marion, we have eaten at a few other local restaurants and passed this place and seen it was busy so figured why not. When we walked in we wait in a line maybe 15 minutes before we were seated. Because of the seating they could not use every table. No one was overly friendly, the waitresses all seemed to help each other but all in a hurry when they came to the table. We both decided to get the chicken and dumplings which was a special for that day I think. You have a choice of hushpuppies or rolls but you get no choices for your veggies. I wanted to try the bake beans and for some reason have not found a BBQ place yet that makes homemade or even close! And just what I thought they were canned beans! And for a extra $1.99 you get the tiny bowl which to me seemed like a rip. I thought as a side we would have got a small bowl enough for us to share. I think you can see in my photo how small the side was. The green beans from a can, seasoned maybe a little with some ham favoring or something they were OK but nothing to be excited about! The chicken and dumplings were actually not too bad, I didn't get a lot of chicken in my bowl the dumplings we're small and not too bad once I added some salt and pepper. If your coming here to get full it won't happen on what we had. My husband could have eaten double what the gave. The mashed potatoes were ehhh. There was something off about them I just couldnt figure it out maybe the butter used or milk, just had a slight funny after taste. I couldn't eat them all I wasn't a fan of them. We ordered a strawberry rhubarb piece of pie. We both agreed it was the best part of the meal!!! You could tell it was homemade, the dough was light and flakey and for me to eat it had to be good cause I am not a pie dough fan and it was very good! Would we stop in again if we are in the area? Mediocre experience, hit and miss! Wifey really enjoyed the Smoked chicken, tender and juicy in a good way, but not very smokey, more like a rotisserie. My pulled pork and brisket special was disappointing. Greens were good, onion rings were okay. The pork was just pulled pork with sauce, no smoke flavors at all. The brisket had an acceptable level of smokiness, but was not moist. Granted, excellent briskets are few and far between (Kaye's in Newland and Smokin' Pig in Easley SC are my choices). Dessert was hit and miss. We returned the strawberry rhubarb pie, it was a falling-apart messy overly sweet, somewhat soggy pie and got the blackberry cobbler, quite good. Vanilla ice cream seemed to have ice crystals, maybe they don't close the container in the freezer? We might go back for modest fare one day on a road trip through Marion if Bruce's is closed, but I am inclined to scrutinize my other options. read more

This place popped up on my recommendations, so we headed over there. This place was bumpin' even on a weekday lunch time. We both ordered the small BBQ pork plate. This is one of those "meat and three" types of BBQ places, and there were a lot of sides to choose from. I decided to go for the hush puppies, fried okra, and potato salad. Everything was tasty! The pork was a little bit on the dry side, and the BBQ sauce had a little bit of an unappetizing skin on it when it came out (I imagine with all the traffic they get, and the speed with which our food came out, they are setting up a lot of stuff in advance.) Overall, everything was delicious, and we had a perfectly filling lunch to speed us on our way east. Service was super friendly and very attentive. We have eaten here three times in the past few months - it isn't as close to our home as we would like - but whenever we are in the area, we make it a point to factor it into our eating plans. Best home cooking and service we've stumbled upon since the lockdowns. It's very hard to find restaurants these days that have great service and an impressive selection of entrees and sides. This place does not disappoint in any category. The wait staff operates as a well-oiled machine - you can hear their friendly banter with each other, checking on each other's customers, delivering drinks with a personalized extra pitcher of each beverage, etc. It just seems like everyone employed here truly enjoys their job and everyone is so pleasant. The place was jumping on a Friday at lunchtime but we were seated immediately and our drinks were served within 5 min. We placed our food order - I got the smoked half chicken plate with collard greens and baked sweet potato. It was so tasty and everything was piping hot! I usually order collard greens at Cracker Barrel - they quite often arrive lukewarm...rarely if ever, are they piping hot! My hubs got the Friday special which is ribs and two sides - he ordered green beans and home fries. Both of our meals arrived within 5 minutes, with a generous portion of complimentary hush puppies. Everything was tasty, fresh and piping hot! This place is far and above Cracker Barrel in EVERY way. It has a similar vibe - but CB has lost its luster. The last time we went to Cracker Barrel is probably the last time I will go to Cracker Barrel. They have gone down in quality over the years - and every time we have been there in the past year we have had to wait, they're short-staffed, and the food is barely edible. I barely choked down my cold collard greens, lukewarm congealed gravy on what tasted like a slab of lunch meat-like roasted turkey. I could lift and separate the sheet of congealed gravy away from the meat! Cracker Barrel has given up - I'm now a devoted fan of Countryside BBQ. I'll start by saying my choices in this town have been horrible. I bought movie tickets to a theatre they don't have and went to a Mexican restaurant that showed open and really wasn't. This was choice three. The reason it gets four stars is that a place that has BBQ in the name should have ribs every day. Not just Tuesday and Friday and some other days. Also a cold beer would have been good - nope. The brisket was good. I was warned it wasn't Texas but it was really good. Mac and Cheese and collards were prefect. I spoke to someone in charge and she replied the owners made a decision 27 years ago to not serve alcohol and when they did ribs every night, they ended up throwing out a bunch. This is why it is. I must say that this place was great. We were passing through on our way to Cherokee and wanted some bbq. This place has an extensive menu and is much more diverse than a standard bbq joint. I went with the brisket. It was excellent. A big portion with bark and a fat smoke ring. Fries were OK, but the cole slaw and hush puppies were good. My wife enjoyed her grilled cheese and loaded tots (cheese and bacon) served with ranch dressing. I got some of those and they were great as well. The service was friendly and quick. We were seated near the waitress station and saw how well the team got along. We had four different servers check on us during the meal which tells me that they work great together.
