Upon entering we were politely approached by a young man greeting us asking if we needed help, we indicated that were just browsing. He left us alone. Within a minute a woman clerk (Debra) approached us, we indicated we were just browsing, she wouldn't back off. She was not helpful, pushy, didn't care what I liked or did not like and at some point blurted out she lost her husband 6+ yrs ago. She was very demanding that I get a shirt I knew would shrink making it too small. She pushed and argued until I went for the smaller shirt that I washed in cold water and hung dried and is now too small to wear. While I continued to look at shirts she maintained a very close distance too me making myself & my wife uncomfortable. I'm going to reach out to the manager and see if I can return the shirt that shrunk. Would not recommend this store, if you do go, avoid Debra... The young man that originally greeted us seemed very nice, wish we would have said something at the time. I would also like to point out that the manager on duty at his time was very professional & cared about her store.

Over the next few years, it continued to grow into one of South Florida's premier luxury malls, with Bloomingdale's opening in 1990 and Saks Fifth Avenue following in 1991. Burdines closed in 2004 as part of Federated Department Stores' corporate consolidation and was replaced by a two-story Nordstrom in 2006. Sears, one of the mall's original anchors, permanently closed on February 29, 2024. This was my first visit to The Gardens Mall, and everything about it exuded luxury. Parking is plentiful and free. Inside the elegant fountains and water features, lush faux floral arrangements, and sculptures scattered throughout the mall lent themselves to creating an upscale atmosphere. The shopping lineup is equally high end with designer boutiques like Talbot's, Coach, Jimmy Choo, Tiffany, Lilly Pulitzer, Chanel, Gucci, Michael Kors, Louis Vuitton, and many more. When it's time for a break, the elegant Gardens Café food court offers quick service favorites like Chick-fil-A, Shake Shack, and Charley's Philly Steaks. I especially loved the mural that wraps around the food court called A Story of Florida. It depicts Florida's earliest history of indigenous people and the arrival of the Spanish and ends with a space shuttle taking flight. Full-service restaurants include California Pizza Kitchen, Cooper's Hawk Winery, P.F. Chang's, and Brio Italian Grille which all have sit down dining options. I liked walking around the mall and while I don't generally shop luxury brands I did check out the Hallmark and Yeti store. The African-American saleslady in her late 40s who helped me initially was attempting to find out what the sale price should be, but not being able to, ended up having to call her manager. Said section manager of course turned out to be much Spanish and much younger, as Macy's has made sure is the case in every store, from The Falls all the way up to Melbourne, in this instance likely Cubanoid. She immediately gave me the greeting and treatment that I've come to expect from two decades of working for them in Miami. She was not interested in that the Kate Spade saucer, right next to the Wedgewood set had been marked down on that same Last Act table to six dollars and change. She was insistent that in this case I needed to pay 50% of the full price, in other words $45. She stuttered through a ten-second explanation amounting to the item I wanted being in a different category, and that Last Act items marked down to the level of the Kate Spade saucer, are those that are not selling. This type of blatant racism coupled with the dictum that all gringos are helpless idiots, which is pervasive in South Florida and rapidly making it its way up north, is going to come back and bite them when Americans take their business online and in some cases to stores where we are still treated somewhat respectfully (depending on where the employee hails from). I left silently because there is no protection for my demographic in the 2020s; an hour later, I returned to find that Cuba had re-ticketed the item to be at 50% off of $90, and placed it again on the Last Act table. All of this is on film, you don't have to take my word for it. It's extremely important to understand that what began as a business decision on the part of a then both venerable brand, first fueled by the housing bubble and subsequent recession, then followed by the pandemic and its attendant commitment to diversity, has turned into a full-fledged war against the host. As a result of "bilingual" preferences, what very few North American salespeople are generally well into middle age and often nearing retirement, and having to carry the burden of this takeover.
