I Waited a couple of washes to write this review but I am so happy to say that I loved my experience at J. Michaels! Before going there, I was sold on Aveda products, just to find out that the new color used at J Michaels is lasting much longer and didn't make me itch. Rachel is amazing!!! My bangs had been butchered and her touch made a huge difference. I am so happy to find Rachel and so happy to find a place that was pleasant, easy to park and that I was treated so well. Rachel was accurate, competent, fast and absolutely a joy to be around! I totally recommend this place and I will not be going anywhere else. Thanks Rachel! You ROCK and you LISTEN!!!!

Best Hair Salon place ever! The Specialists like Jenna Kelly knows how to bleach and tone customers when requested. I experience very remarkably! It is always always a very good hair salon! always, always, always, always. Best places to get hair toned and bleached ever! Good blond hair makes me feel pleased and also to those that work on a person's hair makes them pleased like Jenna Kelly and Skylar Ballard.

Day 1 attempt color that I got. EW! We laughed, it happens!

When I get my hair done, I tend to go for drastic changes. I present stylists with numerous challenges all at once: a cut (which I can never really describe very well), a bleaching / toning or two (I have naturally black hair), and a vivid tone over that (blue, purple, etc.). I always leave my expectations at the door because I know that I am asking a lot, this is an art, not a science, and something has to give. A good stylist knows this and will tread lightly, reminding their client in advance of all possible shortcomings, via additional processes needed, a heftier price tag, sacrifices to hair integrity, etc. I came in with a mousy brown lob. I wanted a shaggy, sultry mop, but not a soccer mom one, of black fading into dark purple fading into white purple. Sound difficult? It was! Sydney did her best but the results were super crappy, looked exactly zero like what I had requested, and we both knew it as we collaboratively cringed into the mirror together. We had already spent like six hours together and we both had to call it quits. To her credit, the look was not achieved on day 1 because Sydney did not want to fry my hair to a crisp with bleach. Good on her! However, I wanted that purple, so I gave her the full go-ahead the following day. There was no way I could have those purples unless we straight up cooked my hair. Miraculously, somehow, my hair remained healthy despite all the hell we gave it on day 2. Sydney totally nailed it. She requested second and third opinions from other colorists on site. She was a really good sport, a good time to be around, extra nice, great attitude, she really listened to what I wanted and was determined to get it right. The purple has long since faded out. However. I STILL get compliments on my hair all.the.time. Her dye / lift painting technique, whatever it is, is world class. It somehow seamlessly fades from black into whitish blonde, with no harsh lines whatsoever. THAT is not easy to do, and we all know that. Sydney did it though! Side note, she gave both of my little girls their very first haircuts ever! They loved her! I'll be back here soon!

I came to J Michaels after the hair dresser I had been going to for years damaged my hair to a point it had never been. I called numerous salons and finally came across J Michaels and they got me in the same day to fix and mend a bad situation. Kelly has been nothing short of an amazing hair stylist. I had previously had tape in extensions and after a consultation decided to go with the natural beaded row (NBR) method. These are AWESOME. They are so customizable for the color, they can tone, add darkness to them, put in drop roots and color melts. The hair is such great quality as well. I am able to do so many things with my hair to style as if I didn't have any extensions. They stay so hidden and look very natural I highly recommend J Michael salon and Kelly, she has provided all the ways of getting my natural hair happy and healthy again

My first highlight with Kelly G. on 9/2/20.

I came in 9/2/20 and got my hair done for the first time in about seven years. Kelly did my hair and did such an amazing job. I was hesitant to get anything done due to having a bad experience years prior. We had a consultation and discussed the desired outcome. I was anxious, but she put me at ease. I would recommend her to absolutely anyone, especially if you've had bad experiences previously. The price is a little high, but you get what you pay for at such a high end salon. It's worth it in my opinion.

I thought that going to a fancy salon, the stylists were the best. They are friendly but haven't gotten my hair how I showed them I wanted it. They suggested a balayage, because I wanted more sunkissed highlights. I have dark brown hair so I wanted something subtle. Instead the stylist said she would do foil highlights. Turned out brassy and not subtle at all. I knew it wasn't just my opinion that it looked bad, since I haven't received one single compliment on the color. I'm still trying to find a place that will fix this. The two stylists my mom and I have had, tug on your scalp so hard, it hurts. Not gentle at all. Not the relaxing treatment that I'm used to. BEWARE, when scheduling online, it won't give you the correct pricing. Once you get to the counter, the price you saw online is no where close to the price tag you'll end up paying. The two stars is just for the looks of the salon.

I love this salon. They make you feel really comfortable. I get NBR extensions done and they always end up looking so natural! Janelle is my stylist and she ALWAYS makes me feel flawless by the time I walk out. I recommend this salon to anybody who is looking to get extensions or color. I've also had a facial done by Cassie and it was so relaxing. Everybody that works here is so kind.

Visited during their Christmas Event and O+J Salon definitely know how to throw a PARTY!…read moreVery impressed with the hospitality and the welcoming environment. Cute salon and a nice sized facility. Very open and with big windows. Very modern and stylish style. The salon was a packed house with all their new and regular clients. Came with a friend and was introduced to her stylist Jessica. She was very knowledgeable with hair and very open about her services and availability. Their Christmas party had food, drinks, and hair product samples. Raffle prizes with product purchases. Oliver + James were generous with this party, now we know why they throw great parties. It was a nice time meeting all the stylists and the owner. Link and Lou permanent jewelry were also at the party as a pop up event for them. It was so great to see another business supporting another business. Awesome marketing to get their business out there and to reach the Des Moines community. Definitely looking to go back as a hair client soon and buying their products! Those samples SOLD me.

Update: the absolute nightmare of trying to work with the owner of this salon got worse. During our…read moreoriginal call, she was resistant to giving me a refund because "they don't allow refunds" (that is disclosed nowhere on their website or in their salon, nor was it told to me before or during my service) but finally said she would be willing to give me one. I never received a refund and it seems I never will. I decided to contact the salon again and say I never received a refund and they told me they couldn't send a refund through card because it was already processed. I sent proof of bank statements showing that there was never a refund and suddenly they were willing to write a check on accord of the "honor system" despite me providing proof I never got my money back. They then requested I delete my photos and review before picking up my check because it was an "unfair" review. I never agreed to deleting anything and decided to try to pick up my check anyway. When I get there, the owner says to come back another day because she's demanding it's deleted. I tell her I'll delete it in the salon because I'm not driving 35 minutes one way to come back, so I delete it in person. The owner then made me wait over 40 minutes before eventually kicking me out of the salon and saying that she won't give me a refund after all, proving it was a deceitful attempt to get me to delete an honest review. Not only did she chastise me during my initial request for a refund, then in person when denying me my promised refund, she only got more rude and insulting. She was upset at me for having an issue with my experience saying how the stylist I saw was highly rated and reviewed and she messed up in no way. Then in person she said how the stylist was fired not even two months later. Fishy that I was berated for having an issue for such a good stylist who then had grounds for termination just weeks after. My bank also confirmed they never attempted to refund my card in the first place and the salon has since blocked me on platforms confirming their unprofessionalism and inability to work with the customers who were done wrong at their business.

Beyond a Stylist: A True Angel on My Wedding Week…read more I cannot say enough about Tina--she went above and beyond in every possible way. Not only did she deliver a gorgeous hairstyle that made me feel beautiful and bridal, but she showed the kind of grace, patience, and kindness that every bride (and any average person) dreams of during such a chaotic time. I was 30 minutes late to our appointment--I was her last visit of the night, and I felt terrible for running behind with all the last-minute wedding errands. But instead of stress or judgment, I was met with total understanding. Her energy was calm, uplifting, and exactly what I needed in that moment. She even stood by my side as I called my tailor about a last-minute issue with my dress, and advocated for me on the phone. That's the kind of heart she has. She didn't have to do any of that, but she did--because that's who she is: thoughtful, supportive, and just an incredible human. Her presence helped ground me in the midst of the chaos, and her work made me feel beautiful. She's not just a hairstylist--she's a calming force, a hype woman, and someone I'd trust a hundred times over.

The proprietor is Tina Turner not the legendary Tina, but one just as astute that is in oils, weaves, press, curls and she could even create a fashionable lace wig for your outings. Perhaps the most notable for me would be the soothing wash and hot oil treatment. To hide that touch of grey you might treat yourself to a rinse. After all is said and done, you walk out with a style that you might just be able to keep up. The prices are modest-- with the new COVID procedures you will be asked Questions, temperature check, put on your mask, etc. Sanitation strategies are followed as well as most wearing a mask when they enter. I hate crowds, and stylists who are not time conscious as to my time as it relates to a scheduled appointment--Tina's pretty good at spacing out clients where you do not have to spend all day in the shop. Parking is good with a public parking lot next door. Customers must have a credit card on file and must schedule appointments--gone may be the days of "walk on in, " due to Corona. The environment is safe and pleasant. So if you need an up do or a down home style check the shop out --but call-- leave a message and wait for a response.
