JP Licks is a reliable chain with a large variety of flavors. However, the ice cream at this establishment in particular is often a little melted. I come here fairly often in the summer because it's usually a walk away from my apartment and open late, and thus a very convenient place to grab ice cream at. Came here with the entire family on a busy, hot Saturday and was served quickly. Though many trendier places have popped up in recent years, JP Licks has managed to maintain its charm and tradition while evolving with the times. I particularly like how they constantly update the flavor options including a great Celtics themed ice cream on this visit. Would definitely recommend hard ice cream over soft, and anything chocolate based is can't miss. Some flavors can be a bit too rich or sweet but it's ice cream after all. We biked to Davis Square on a warm Sunday afternoon and arrived sweaty and hypoglycemic, and there was JP Licks. Determined not to completely gorge ourselves, my wife and I shared a small cup with two flavors: peanut butter cookies and cream (peanut butter ice cream with chunks of chocolate and cream cookies stirred in), and lumpy primate (banana ice cream with chunks of chocolate and walnut). We had seems multiple JP Licks locations during our time in Boston and knew we needed to try it. This ended up being one of our favorite ice cream shops we have been to! They have so many menu options including regular ice cream, ice cream sandwiches, floats/milkshakes, sundaes, and even cakes. The ice cream was so creamy and the taste was spot on. There were plenty of staff so even though it was crowded, we were served in less than 10 minutes. They had a few tables and seats around the store. This was a fun place to sit as they were playing good music and it was interesting reading the bulletin board with upcoming local events. A scooper saw me and came over. She looked bored to tears or angry, I couldn't tell. She let me try the two flavors, her fingers awfully close to the ice cream. I decided to get a kiddie of the pandan. She looked at me and said nothing...... With an awkward stare. She repeated the order and scooped. It was a weird interaction. Finally I go over to the register. The same lady was still there waiting as her coffee was being prepared by the cashier. So I waited.... A third worker walked over, joked with the cashier, and left to go into the back. I continued waiting. A line formed at the ice cream as the one who helped me was on her phone in the back. Finally the cashier finished the coffee, cashed her out, and then cashed me up. I'm not sure how I feel about returning to this location. read more

I really don't like that I have to write this negative review because in general J.P. Licks has always impressed me in every location with their treatment and precautions surrounding my peanut/tree nut allergy. However, I had a very bad and disrespectful experience this past weekend with a certain dark haired female server. I walked in hoping to get a cone but unsure of whether or not it would be safe for me. I had always gotten my ice cream in a cup on past visits to J.P. Licks. When I asked this server if that would be safe she very rudely said "uh...why wouldn't it be?" When I explained the concept of cross contamination, which she clearly had no understanding of, she again rudely stated "well everything here is made with nuts. have you even been here before?" I said yes and explained that they usually wash the scoop and scoop out of a fresh gallon for me. I gave up on her and the cone and ended up ordering a cup as usual. Now, usually my order takes a bit longer that my friend's because of the time it takes the server to wash an ice cream scoop and scoop out of a fresh gallon. This particular server, who had already demonstrated her lack of concern for my allergy, had my order ready extremely fast. I did not witness her scooping out of a new gallon either which is very concerning. I question whether or not she even washed the ice cream scoop. Luckily, I did not have an allergic reaction. I and my friends were wildly offended by her rude treatment of me and my allergy. Very unimpressed because J.P. Licks is my favorite ice cream in the area! The buttercream-tasting ice cream is swirled with rich chocolate cake and cookie pieces. So good, that it couldn't possibly be topped by the other flavor we chose. But the mocha chip was perfect, an equal in every way. Smooth, rich, creamy, and just sweet enough with a hint of salt. It tastes like a good, strong coffee and even manages to have some crunch (I'm not sure what the chips are...coffee sugar pieces maybe?). The serving size alone was inadequate for the price we paid, and the quality of the icecream, while not bad, was also not worth the cost. To top off subpar experience, I ordered a coffee which first was served to me lukewarm...I came back in and let them know and the person serving me said "oh I thought it might have been sitting there a while, I'll make you another one." Appreciative he said he'd make me another one but probably not the best customer service to 1) serve customer what you think *may* be not fresh coffee, 2) tell said customer you were aware this was possibly the case and served it to them anyways...I told him I'll go outside and come back since he said he would brew new coffee, but he said no need it'll be done in about 45 seconds- what kind of coffee is brewed in 45 seconds? I worked as a barista for years and this response had me skeptical. When the employee gave me my second cup I walked outside only to discover my coffee was again lukewarm. I gave up. Hmmmm idk. I wasn't impressed. The interior is definitely a bit old school and the workers there weren't all too friendly or looked happy to be there lol. The ice cream was just ok. Idk I was expecting some amazingly creamy ice cream but to me, it tasted like a store bought, scooped out of a generic ice cream tub kind of ice cream. And it's expensive. My friend got a scoop (same as I did) and her scoop was 1/3 the size of mine but we paid the same. She was pissed bc the lady couldn't scoop the ice cream into the cone without breaking it. It's like the ice cream was a little less rich, and therefore took on a little more of a refreshing quality that I enjoyed. But I wouldn't say that the ice cream was lacking in flavor, it was just more of a subtle hint of milk that was still present and very pleasant. Because this milky flavor wasn't just all in your face and loud, I could see this as an ice cream I'd easily finish by the pint. So overall pretty good ice cream. I'd definitely recommend trying it out and I think I need to try it a couple more times myself in order to really tease out the subtler flavors. Really good ice cream. Quick service. The ice cream was absolutely delicious. We had brownie batter and cookie and cake batter. The cookie and cake batter was incredible! It was mostly cake in a cone. We had a medium (2 scoops) in a waffle cone and shared it, my wife and I, and it was more than enough for us! It was kinda pricey but it was high quality. The employees didn't seem like they wanted to be there and they didn't seem to clean their scoop, which doesn't bother me but could be dangerous if you have an allergy, as there was mint ice cream within our scoops.
