When we arrived they place was packed. We waited behind about 15 people in line. The menu was pretty extensive for a little shop, offering ice cream, hard yogurt, cakes, shakes and others. Ended up ordering a small peanut butter cookie and cream with mini Oreos and a kiddie cookies and cream hard yogurt. Both were satisfying on a hot day. On my most recent visit, I had the oatmeal and no sugar vanilla soft-serve yogurt (which were a little bit on the melty side), and I've also tried many of their ice cream flavors in the past (I'm especially partial to their cookie-based flavors). There's really something for everyone, whether you're looking for something lighter (like sorbet, yogurt, or non-dairy) or traditional ice cream. However, I haven't really found J.P. It was pretty good but definitely icy and not as smooth as ice cream would be (depends on your personal preference I guess). It's not a huge location but there's some benches outside. It's like mega-hot hot sauce - a worthwhile pain in the mouth. Grab a spoon, weakling. The staff have always been friendly even when faced with never-ending lines of indecisive samplers. Often the case and with good reason, the monthly flavor rotation gives you yet another excuse to return regularly. The crew posts their favorite flavor combos on a giant blackboard, which offer creative alternatives to the same ol' same ol' even when they do stretch (Optimus Prime = oreo with red, white and blue jimmies. My SICA (seasonal ice cream addiction) began early this year, February 19, 2012 at 8 p.m. to be exact. Entering the store, I knew I wanted my regular: coconut almond chip. However, it's a new year, so why not try something new, I asked myself. Puzzled, I asked the super friendly ice cream scooper (what do you call them? Baristas? Ice cream tenants?) what her favorite was among the coconut almond chip, brownie brownie batter, and chocolate peanut butter ripple. After a delightful conversation, I had all three in a small cup. It was the best (although, I would recommend the brownie brownie batter over all of them). I wish I could give this JP 4.5 stars, as it's great and the folks working there are super friendly. I had a craptastic day at work , and after a run and eating a bunch of hummus, and finishing two papers for grad school, I wanted a break. So I took a walk to Davis on a great night to deposit my IRS refund and get some ice cream. I heard about the oreo cake batter so that's what I got. The girl behind the counter put one scoop in and asked if I wanted a small or medium. I assumed that the small was that lonely sad scoop, so I said medium. She then proceeds to add 3 scoops, making it into something out of a children's book. When I went to pay, I actually gave her my wallet and said just take the cash out. There was no way I could have done that move successfully with the Leaning Tower of Ice Cream I had going on. So I walked out of the store and back home with a giant grin on my face. It must be said, the only reason I'm not giving my homeboy JP a full 5 STARS is that the prices are indeed outrageous. If it weren't for my gag reflex I'd probably be an excellent contestant on Fear Factor. JP Licks satisfies my need for something new. I'll put it this way: JP Licks had me at Cucumber Ice Cream. That's right. Cucumber Ice Cream. They had this last summer. I saw it and I said, "MUST HAVE!" and it was delightful. Cool, refreshing, sweet and different. For their nearly daily switcheroonis as to what they currently are scooping they get a huge amount of props from me. Sure they have a huge list of staples but almost every time I go in there they also have a substantial list of new flavors of the day, week, HOUR. It's always changing! It's like God's Rubix Cube and he can't figure out what side the Chocolaty Chunk flavors should go so he just keeps shuffling that warlock around and crafting some seriously creative and deadly flavors. It is, in a word, tremendous. Also, and one of my favorite features, is that the staff gets to put up their favorite flavor combinations. So if you're having trouble deciding on your own you can try one of those puppies or maybe just steal some of their ideas. I've done it a bunch of times and, other than the aforementioned Milk Shake problem, have never been let down. In conclusion, decrease the price, increase the quality shake (of the milk kind) and you would have 5 PRETTY RED STARS. But in the meantime, you should still go to JP Licks and see what they have to offer for ice cream. I guarantee you will find something that will make you very antsy in your pantsy indeed. read more

I love love love the oatmeal cookie frozen yogurt...it has fantabulous real oatmeal in it. Delicious. I also love that I can get it in a kiddie size...making any ice cream experience for me a little bit nicer. They've got a load of crazy flavors. Though the only other one I've tried was the lime green Sam Adam's in honor of St. Patty's (not bad, just weird). My fiance shops around and he hasn't had a complaint yet. He especially loves the peanut butter sauce on any flavor he gets. One gripe. Little pricy. Not more so than something like a Cold Stone, though. I personally just don't like paying $10 dollars or so every time my fiance and I go and all I get (sometimes him too) is the kiddie size. But then again--not a fan of ice cream. Really. read more

Coconut Almond Chip Hard Yogurt. Yes, I could eat this everyday. I had some serious trouble deciding exactly what flavor I wanted. The sweet girl working at the counter suggested that I just sample ALL of their flavors. Yeah, she was serious. And, I was seriously contemplating doing so, but I thought better of that idea and just ordered what she said was her favorite, the Coconut Almond Chip -- hard yogurt. It was one of their several May specials. It did not disappoint! I only got a "kiddie" sized cup, since I'm watching my girlish figure these days. It was the perfect treat! The other specials they had were flavors like: Peanut Butter Chip Butter Cashew Dulce De Leche El Diablo -- which is similar to a mexican hot chocolate but in ice cream form, I did sample this as it was the girl's other favorite - it was delicious! Fresh Banana Strawberry Cheesecake -- next time! Sorbet flavors: Fresh Lemon Hibiscus, Fresh Margarita (there was booze in it, not gonna lie, I was tempted) Sherbet flavors: Fresh Lime - sounds so refreshing! Lactose Free: Black Cherry and the Coconut Almond Chip Hard Yogurt - One of the best decisions I've made to date! It was clean, and not crowded when I went on a Sunny Saturday Afternoon around 1:45pm. Their homemade sorbet is amazing. Well, actually, some of their homemade sorbets are amazing. Like their grapefruit. It is so delicious. However, their sorbets are seasonal and change. Like, they have manishewitz sorbet during Passover and whiskey orange around St Patrick's Day. I've had both, and the orange whiskey was definitely better than the manishewitz one, which just tasted like frozen manishewitz. Anyway, I love that I can get good sorbet here, as a vegan, and everyone else loves their ice cream. Also, their pre-packaged espresso bark is really good, too. Oh, and get a Cow Card. JP Licks definitely wins for cute flavor names (Cherry Garciaparra is now Cherry Ortiz) and for tasty flavor combos. Their coffee oreo is outstanding, and their Diablo ice cream (cayenne and chocolate) has just enough kick. The staff is willing to let you try tons of flavors, even when there's a long line. This could also be a bad thing, depending on how you look at it. I'd say that the actual ice cream texture is not as creamy as Toscanini's or Christina's, and their fudge is good but not mind-blowing. I would recommend getting a chunkier ice cream here, or a weird flavor combo you wouldn't otherwise try. I can only give the Davis branch 4 stars because they took away one of my favorite frappes (the Skinny Elvis: Vanilla yogurt with a banana and peanut butter sauce - though I have gotten them to make me a custom order). And if you arrive at the same time as the Tufts Joey, you have to wait twice as long, and get jostled in their very small space. I managed an ice cream shop for 10 years so I can tell you the line out the door here is not because the ice cream is amazing, it's because it takes about 10 minutes to get served for each person. The employees are nice and I feel sorry for them because they clearly are understaffed. I love egg creams. The thing about that is that I think I may be one of the very few. Often when I order egg creams, the person supposed to make it for me asks me how to make them-- like I'm supposed to know. I mean for all I know, you juice a Yucca.* So anyway, JP Licks has them on their menu and not all of their employees know how to make them. Fractional star off for that. Another fractional star off because they only come in one size (enormous) and if I drink the whole thing I get sick to my stomach. (Maybe that's fractional star off of me because I apparently don't have that much self-control) Also, they are Kosher. I think that's fabulous, what I don't think is fabulous is Kosher marshmallow. It's the grossest marshmallow product ever. They also don't have gummy bears (a highly underrated sundae addition) because they can't find a Kosher provider. So my two favorite toppings, ruined or not present. A little frowny over here. But, you can't not love JP Licks. It's cute, fast, local, and the mascot is "a cow with people eyes" (as the GF says). The flagship locale in JP is a great hangout, unlike the Davis Square one which has very few tables. The Davis Square location, however, has Davis Square all around it-- and Davis Square is a great hangout. I almost couldn't care less about service here, but they seem to have a little understaffing issue, which can make for long lines, so minus one star. That said, I could eat JP Licks ice cream every damn day. The month of March and their Irish Coffee special edition flavor was HEAVEN. It tasted just like irish coffee in ice cream form. And the fact that I could get an entire quart of it, PLUS jimmies, fuggedaboutit, I probably gained 5lbs in March. All the flavor's I've had have tasted great, without being ridiculously rich to the point where you feel ill after finishing your cup, cone, etc, ie: the exact opposite of Coldstone Creamery (I hold a grudge for even ever having gone there...crappy ice cream, singing staff, but I digress..). I could stop here every day, but I don't because I value still fitting into my pants.
