So, after my trailer fell off on Hwy 37, I had to take it in for some repair work (the lights didn't work and I just wanted to check the integrity of the thing after suffering a traumatic slide up a hill. I search for "trailer service" in Yahoo Locals and expected to get some listings out of Marin County but no, there was JW Mobile. I give them a call and ask if they work on trailers. "Yes, we do." Great! I bring my trailer in the next day and tell them about my incident. The guy first scolds me for entrusting someone to hook up my trailer and then goes on to tell me that any trailer with a braking system MUST also be hooked up to a brake controller..."it's the law," he says. Okay, so I'll give this guy a chance. He seemed like a genuinely knowledgable trailer repair man...Jim was his name. He tried to convince me to change my coupler to a HammerBlow system. However, the labor was a little too much and I didn't go there to get sold on modifications to my trailer. However, I did agree to get the brake controller installed. So, I leave my trailer overnight and it gets checked the next day. Then, I drop my car off the following day to get the brake controller installed. Not only did they install the controller, but they also tidied up the hitch area and installed a bracket and a new 7-pin adapter. Pretty slick and clean. I go out on the road and notice a HUGE difference in how the car/trailer reacts under braking. It is a lot less stress on my car now, especially the hitch, chassis, and brakes. In fact, it was such a huge difference that the thought of me towing my trailer around before scares me. The bottomline is, Jim knew what he was talking about, worked fast, and his rates aren't too bad, but not the cheapest ,I'm sure. For that, he gets docked one star. The owner, Jim Wilson, also does auto air conditioning refills and repairs (Cool Cats) and had previously done some a/c work for me. So, hoping to avoid high dealer charges, and in spite of an earlier experience that resulted in an overfilled automatic transmission, I brought the vehicle in (for brake work), mainly because I was assured someone else would work on it this time. Estimate $411.50. Problem: sinking/low brake pedal. They replaced the master cylinder (I supplied) and then told me the new one was defective. They replaced it with one sourced by them, and when I came to get the vehicle the problem persisted. Apparently this too was "defective". I had to leave it and take a bus home. Replaced the second MC and the problem was still there. "Must be the ABS valve." Replaced the ABS valve ($381.58). Problem still there. Whoops, it's Friday. Sorry, we're done until Monday. This is a work vehicle, stuck in their shop for over a week. So finally, they replaced a rear brake cable ($41.82). OK, now the pedal is at the correct height and the brakes seem to be working properly. Final total: $924.83. Too bad they didn't replace the cable first. This was the auto repair shop story from hell. Sweet talk on the telephone, but service not delivered. I'm back to do-it-yourself repairs. read more

I had a hydraulic hose blow on a mini excavator in Tiburon, and I was in a hurry to get it fixed. J W Mobile was recommended for their hydraulic hose fabricating ability by NAPA auto parts on Woodside in San Rafael. So I went there with my old hose, which was a basic 36" hydraulic line with no fancy fittings. The guy who I'd spoken to on the phone seemed cool, and I think he was the one helping me while I was there. He spent an incredibly long time looking for the end fittings before he could even start. He ultimately couldn't find them, so after about 10 or 15 min, he passed my job off to another guy, and he asked me to wait in their waiting area (it's a nice corner with 2 couches.) I was able to make calls and damn near take a nice nap--because it took ridiculously long for them to fabricate my hose. And speaking of my hydraulic hose, what they had made for me was 6" too long. I had specifically told him to make it 3/4"-1" longer than my original. But they did 6". Why? I don't know. He said it was fine, but actually it is NOT (and that was pretty f-ing presumptuous of him to state.) Because in reality, where this hose goes, there is no way to stuff another 6" in there. So reluctantly he took it again to his guy in the back. I asked him if he'd like to take the old hose so the guy can use it to compare, and he responds by saying "No." Really? No, really! I'm not the only one who calls bullshit here? Please tell me if I am. I stood there for about a minute processing what just happened before I decided to go into the service area and check on the guy, myself. Well, he was just ready to crimp the end and it would have been 3 inches too long this time! I told him that I'd been telling the other guy 1" longer only. He said that he'd not been relayed that info. Jesus!! But as soon as the guy doing the hose heard directly from me, everything was clear. He just cut it to the right length and crimped it; the way it should have been done in the first 5 minutes when I'd gotten there. This guy in the their mobile truck (in the service bay at the time) was super cool. He was friendly, sharp, and easy to deal with. The OTHER guy in the office... WTF? On drugs? Maybe didn't eat and was out of his mind? I don't know. He had seemed perfectly fine on the phone. That's why I'd decided to take them my business in the first place!! I don't know what his issue actually was, but then, CHECK THIS: He lays a bill down for $97.93. This is for my little 3' hydraulic line! I was expecting about $40. But at this point, I was so sick of being there and having to correct his bumblings that I just paid the bill and GTFO. I will NOT ever come back. Their bill broke down this way: Plastic hose (qty: 3) $14.70 Fitting (qty: 2) $49.94 Fitting Crimp (service) (qty: 2) 25.00 Tax was $8.29 Those fittings should have cost no more than $5/ea. For this highway robbery, at least they are reporting the taxes. And I am reporting THEM. read more

JW (Jim) is the best. He has been working on my trucks for years. There are many repair companies trying for my business. Some are less expensive, some are more expensive. What you get from JW Mobile goes beyond money. Anyone can take "20% off", "not charge you for something".....and then they just inflate the bill to cover their discount. Jim is an HONEST mechanic. He would never do those kinds of things because that's not who he is. And he is JW Mobile, literally. His staff (especially Charlotte in the office) is very friendly, organized and they know their stuff. I wouldnt bring my fleet of trucks, or a single truck, to anyone else. read more
