Without a doubt the customer service is amazing, the food however wasn't what I was expecting. I ordered the jerk chicken rice bowl which came with Jamaican jerk chicken, coconut white rice (opt for the rice & peas instead) Jamaican slaw and sweet plantains. I also had to get a Jamaican patty and a bev. The Jamaican Jerk was more like pulled pork and it had more of a bbq flavor than jerk, the slaw could've been a bit more seasoned but the rice and sweet plantains had a nice flavor. I love Jamaican patty's but this one was missing that kick and flavor I was looking for. It kinda just tastes like ground beef in dough. To wash everything down I picked the Jamaican kola and it was pretty good. Overall I paid $32.40 and enjoyed the experience of trying something new. Wake Up Your Mouth with Ja Patty! Not too spicy, but my oh my what flavor with a nice 'Happy Heat' that makes their incredibly delicious food moreish. The blend of herbs and spice, mixed with a light handed tamarind is what will make me coming back for more and more. I know my traditional New Englanders are shy on heat, but this is a black pepper, allspice, thyme, ginger kinda heat with a bit of fire added in for kicks. I ordered the Jerk Chicken Rice Bowl with Coconut Rice, their slaw and a sweet plantain. Can I channel Oliver Twist here and ask, "More please?" I also ordered the Jerk Chicken Patty. I was so excited to try this when I saw the truck at the Water Lantern Festival but it was just okay. I ordered a Jerk Chicken patty and was expecting shredded jerk chicken with sauce but it was ground and was more like a beef patty. The pastry part was also just okay - no distinct seasoning or taste and I feel like there was more bread / pastry than meat. The service was good - workers were kind & quick. I have tried JA Patty's food a few times already and I just did not feel even the strength to write about my food experiences.....the experiences had always been underwhelming, but the straw that broke the camel's back was today's experience at the Empanada Fest. Every vendor knew they were going to sell about 300+ tickets for the festival, so I heard from several vendors .. "we got over 400 pieces for the event". This JA Patty ran out of empanadas around 4:45pm (the event ran from 4p-6p) So more than half of the people that got tickets for tasting 8 samples only got to try 7 because these people were so disorganized or slack on their approach that they did not make enough for the event... Really not a big deal because I had one of the early empanadas and it was awful...the worst one of the 8 samples I tasted. The baked empanada sample had a soft wimpy dough with no texture nor bite, the filling inside was bland and they give you sauce so you can dunk the empanada in...to give it some kind of flavor....did not work.........Do yourself a favor and if you see them selling stuff at an event ..... pick something else...... No pictures, they don't deserve them.... read more

So maybe I can't go to Jamaica this year, but I can still taste some delicious Jamaican food right here in RI! Ja Patty is one of the most delicious food trucks that we have visited to date. Everything has the Jamaican feel to it from the drinks, to the rice bowls, and of course the patties. I specifically went on a day to try the oxtail rice bowl, and it did not disappoint! So tender and full of flavor! The beans and rice as well as the slaw went perfectly with this tasty dish, and every bit was equally as delicious. I got to try some of the jerk chicken, and it was very good as well. Flavorful, but I would not call it spicy, so don't be afraid to give it a try! We both ordered the traditional beef patties. As this was our first patty experience, we wanted to do traditional. I found it comparable to a meat pie, but one that you could hold in your hand. They were very tasty, and the crust was perfection! I will try some of their other flavors on our next trip. For desert we did the apple pie patty, as everyone absolutely should do! This is not the processed item that you would get at McDonalds, this is homemade Jamaican goodness! The owners are super nice people and their food is incredible! I really wanted to love these veggie patties, but the taste just wasn't there for me. I tried the ital curry patty and the callaloo patty. They weren't bad by any means but they weren't delicious either. I liked the dumplings. They stuck out to me because they actually make their patties from scratch, instead of rely on frozen which is what most Jamaican restaurants use it seems. A group of us ordered a variety of things like the jerk chicken rice bowl, curry veggie bowl, oxtail and beef patty. Food tasted really fresh and made with love. My critique is that it is on the under-seasoned side and there is not enough gravy to go with all the rice. The curry veg and jerk chicken for example came with a disproportionate amount of rice to the good stuff. The patty was tasty and had a great pastry texture. Went to Food Truck Event in Portsmouth RI on June 25 and was considering Oxtail and rice but at the last minute I changed it to 3 Patties, 2 beef, 1 chicken. Anyway, they were on the counter before I finished ordering which should have been a sign to not take them, but I did. They were lukewarm and THE DRIEST THING I'VE EVER PUT IN MY MOUTH. Rather then complain that it felt like I stuffed a ball of flour in my mouth, I asked for hot sauce to maybe lube it up so I could swallow, and received a gingery tasting spicy liquid, that didn't help the situation. I've eaten patties regularly from trucks in my 20 years driving a truck, and normally it's hard to mess up, but I couldn't eat them and it was a waste of $21. read more

Finally got the chance to try Ja Patty at the Food Truck & Craft Beer Festival in Newport. I had the curry veggie patty ($5.50). It was filled with fresh vegetables and potato in a flaky pastry crust. I'm impressed by how buttery their vegan pastry tastes! It was not spicy at all so I kind of wish they had some hot sauce on the side or something. I had a chance to try Ja Patty at the Hope Street Winter Block Party. The service was excellent, the person who took my order was kind and offered suggestions on which kind of patty to order. The truck is shiny and clean, easy to find across Mineral Spring Ave from Lorraine Sewing. Both owners were present, very nice people! I ordered the Coconut Curry Veggie Rice Bowl and a Curry Veggie Patty - both absolutely delicious! I'm so happy they have vegetarian options, but the menu has meat options as well, including goat and oxtail. They even have real imported Jamaican soft drinks. We visited Ja Patty at the recent RI VegFest and got a couple of their patties to go. We bought one "Ital" Curry Patty and one Callaloo Patty. They were served with little containers of mystery sauce for dipping. We heated them up before eating them, which I think served them well. These were fairly sizable patties which were well stuffed in proportion to the dough and were initially cooked to a nice crisp. Cutting them in half exposed the ample fillings of each. When sliced, the "Ital" Curry Patty with potatoes, carrots, onions and green peas revealed each individual ingredient. The dough was a nice consistency and thickness. It's curry flavor was a bit too mild for our expectations, however that fact let the vegetables really shine. The Callaloo Patty was stuffed with sauteed spinach and "mini Jamaican dumplings". The seasonings in this patty were also mild, which meant the spinach was really allowed to be tasted and wasn't overwhelmed by flavoring as it can easily be. We each tried the dipping sauce with both patties. Simply put, it was weird. Very sweet to the point that a small enough amount couldn't possibly have been added to make it a pleasant addition. It had the taste of sweetened apple sauce. We tried it on both patties to be fair, and it didn't work on either. Sauce omitted, we really enjoyed Ja Patty's offerings and at the fair price of $5 per patty, we would definitely return to them for more. read more
