Friendly staff, lots of equipment and facilities. They are renovating right now (3/26) so somewhat chaotic...... With so much equipment and things to do, one can always find a way to work out. They keep status and updates posted regularly around the building so you can always find out what going on. I use this facility regularly! read more

This place is absolutely terrible. The only reason my wife and I come here is the utilize the kids club while we workout. First off, the women behind the front desk are always rude whenever you have even a simple question. The place is full of people who do not have even a small amount of knowledge of gym etiquette. People frequently hog machines forever while playing on their phones and/or old people who just sit there gazing around. People do not understand personal space at all! Way too many old people here and they just get in the way. The gym is under renovation so everyone is crammed in the old inline hockey rink and it is never cleaned or organized by staff. The locker rooms. Oh the locker rooms. It always smells like dead fish and the amount of old guys walking around naked is absolutely disgusting. I can't even take my son in there. The sauna is disgusting and smells terrible. Then see photo of black mold on the floor. I'm sure I'm missing things, but we are going to see if things improve when the new gym is complete before we leave. I do not recommend. read more

I'm extremely disappointed and hurt by the way my family was treated at both the Livonia and Troy Rec Centers. My son met the 42-inch height requirement and has safely enjoyed similar attractions before, yet we were still made to feel uncomfortable and singled out throughout our visit. What upset me the most was watching my son cry after getting hurt, and instead of showing concern or compassion, staff looked at him, walked away, and laughed with another coworker. As a parent, that was heartbreaking and completely unacceptable to witness. No child should ever be treated with such disregard, especially when they are visibly upset and crying. Throughout the visit, my children both older and younger were watched excessively, which made us feel targeted instead of welcomed. As a Black family, the treatment we experienced raised serious concerns about bias and discrimination. I fully understand the importance of safety rules, but rules should be enforced respectfully and equally for everyone. Families come to these facilities to feel safe and enjoy time together, not to feel humiliated, ignored, or judged. I will be contacting the district and administration for both facilities to formally report these experiences and seek accountability. I hope steps are taken to ensure no other family or child is made to feel this way again. read more

The Rec Center is an amazing place that has so much to offer. It has an indoor track, two basketball courts and indoor pool, a work out area, climbing wall, child care, work out classes and multipurpose rooms. The Rec Center is organized and very clean. The locker rooms are usually well maintained and never a problem to find a locker. It also has a family environment, which makes it a non threatening gym. The price is also right. For using most of the above mentioned features, it is fairly cheap if you are a Livonia resident. The price does exclude exercise classes and outdoor pool access (indoor pool access is included) I look forward to continuing to utilize the features of the facility, but to me, a runner who hates running outside in the winter, the indoor track is all that I need. read more

Man is that high!!! Do you have the guts to try it? My daughter is dating someone who likes to climb rocks. I used to climb trees when I was their age. My daughter and I went with him to check it out. Well, before you know I have a harness between my legs and thinking what the H am I doing? Well Mr. Macho Man aka Burger Boy just couldn't turn down a challenge. I have the huge fear besides heights, breaking every bone in my body. I had to make sure it would be safe for my daughter. Great, kill the bread winner. Great idea! Well, I climbed and I climbed and I climbed, so after the first three feet I started to go higher. I made it about three quarters of the way up(40 feet), that's when it hit me, DON"T LOOK DOWN!!!! What a big dummy!!! I had to get down now. I hear "Just let go" What are you nuts or something. "Hang on to the rope". Right about now I started to say The Our Father. He must have heard me, I made it back down safe. I watched my daughter try it and she is a natural. She flew up to the top. This place is fantastic. They have everything and anything you could want to participate. Exercise equipment, gym, swimming pool, climbing wall, lots to do. The cost for a non resident is $12.50 for the day. we had a good time. After my excursion on the wall I stayed grounded. I grabbed a basketball and shot baskets for about two hours. read more

We are new to Livonia and find the Rec to be everything we need. However the childcare definitely isn't what we were used to at The Y in Ann Arbor, because they don't spend any time engaging the kids. They put on a movie, and hope that things stay calm. But for kids who need some attention to transition, you may need too look elsewhere. read more

Just attempted yet again to register for swim lessons. Basically, don't even bother if you're not a member because they fill up almost immediately. I don't even know why they bother opening registration up to non-residents. I moved to Livonia from NYC. Let me tell you about NYC gyms. I paid $90 a month for access to a shi*ty gym. I got a bunch of machines, some free weights, some classes, and towel service. That's a step up from a crappy gym but not an awesome one. I walk into the LCRC. For just under $400, I get a YEAR membership for my wife and I. That's two months in a shi*ty NYC gym. Take a bunch of machines, add a bunch more machines, take free weights and tripple them, add a pool and an indoor track and a climbing wall and a pool and a waterslide and clean locker rooms and a basketball court and other weird courts that I haven't figured out the use for yet? ZOMG! I happily forked out the entire year membership amount in a check immediately to ensure I can keep coming to this Mecca of Health for the next 12 months! Plus, it's walking distance from my house. The staff are either awesome or totally useless. The management is completely switched on, empowered, and ridiculously helpful. The high school kids, however, are pretty much what you expect -- at least they're friendly. Everything is immaculately clean... always. TLDR: Buy a membership now! read more

I love the Kirksey Recreation Center! I have only been to a couple other city rec centers, but I have to saw the Livonia Recreation Center is by far the nicest one! The leisure and lap pool, rock wall, fitness hub, treehouse, aerobic rooms, party rooms, locker rooms, indoor walking tracks, gyms, are all just some of the things available here. The yearly family membership is very affordable. I love walking the indoor track and love watching people play basketball below the track. The staff is very friendly. A word of warning, don't come here between 5-9pm expecting to get a machine, especially an elliptical or treadmill. I've had to wait so many times that I didn't renew my membership &opted to buy a used treadmill to work out at home, for the same price. However, I've taken a few classes here, &they are the saving grace of the Rec Center, if you ask me. My favorite is Pi-Yo with Zhanna. She is nothing short of AMAZING. I've actually taken her class 3 spring/summers in a row &recommend her to everyone I know. If you are someone who is interested in trying yoga, but is intimidated by going to an expensive studio, try taking a class here first. Yoga Strength Fusion is also really good.. very challenging, but that's what you're signing up for, isn't it? ; ) The prices are pretty decent, especially considering private fitness clubs offer similar classes for much more. In my opinion, I don't think the membership is worth it, unless you want to swim, play basketball, or use the track. The wait for machines during peak time stinks, and their hours, especially on weekends aren't super appealing to someone who usually has a lot to fit in her schedule. (If you can go during the day, it's a different story entirely! The place is usually only half-filled during working hours.) However, if you have children who like to play in the pool, it's totally worth it. They have a pretty sweet water slide, as well as a rock climbing wall that's two-stories high. Check out their classes, though, which you don't need a membership for. Non-residents can also attend classes for a slightly higher fee, &pass-holders pay a slightly cheaper price. read more

If you are looking for a gym for serious training, this is not it. The Livonia Rec Center is not geared toward athletes or people whom are serious about their physical fitness. The Livonia Rec Center is geared towards senior citizens and their social life. The Livonia Rec Center and it's managers care more about the senior citizens whom talk on and around the rec center wearing jeans and sweaters more than an athlete or a public safety worker or just a regular person whom wants to achieve or maintain good physical fitness. The workers there will shut down the entire bench press area to fix a single TV during peak times. The cable machines are over a decade old and are constantly breaking. The cable on the single stack weight machine has broke on me twice. That machine will take an entire week or more to get fixed, but they will get a treadmill fixed either same or next day. The Livonia Rec Center is the only gym I have ever gone to that keeps the heavy dumbbells (they only go up to 100lbs, by the way) on the bottom of the rack. They purposely keep the lighter weights on top of the rack so the senior citizens do not have to bend over to grab them. The Livonia Rec Center does not require any kind of orientation prior to or after signing up. So you see people on a daily basis doing their entire workout routine right in front of the dumbbell rack. There are the same group of people there daily whom use the gym as a social gathering place and take up space and room and get in the way of those whom are there to work out. There is not a single normal pull up bar anywhere in the entire facility. A $50.00 item that can be bolted to the wall, they refuse to buy. One was even offered to be donated and was turned down. The training staff leave their weight racked and want the paying members to get off the benches and weights to they can train their clients. The male locker room is gross. Flies in the shower, mildew on the curtains, nude men in the sauna with no towels and talcum powder all over the floor. Depending on whom who get to help you at the counter, you may have a very helpful young woman whom greats you with a smile and is willing to help, or you may get one of the older women there whom are rude, huffy and puffy and act like they are doing you a favor by getting off their butts to do something. Better hope you do not have a billing issue... The track upstairs is nice if you can keep people out of the running lane, no one seems to pay attention to the direction or what lanes are what. The classes also get in the way. You are there to run indoors on a wet day and there are basic classes being held on the track. I would suggest taking a look somewhere else before you pay money to join the LCRC. One of my biggest problems is that I pay more than anyone else there, I subsidize other income and age brackets there, yet I do not get full use or enjoyment out of the LCRC. read more

Although the place is very nice and has lots of choices, paying a $40 for a once a week class doesn't do much for your body...I wish there was more of a program, but I think this is the kind of place where it follows health vs. fit ? If you're content with machines and cute little indoor track, it's the place for you. It's hard to meet people or form work-out relationships, if you aren't a mommy running around meeting other moms. That's a bummer, because meeting people who share those interests really increases motivation. Harry's Butts & Gutts class is awesome, he's really supportive and helps all levels! We've been working out at the rec center for about 8 years now. I am not a fan of gyms where you feel like you have to be in full makeup and snazzy, expensive workout clothes in order to fit in. If that is the type of workout establishment you are looking for, then go elsewhere. The rec center has all of the amenities that I need - plenty of cardio equipment, a track, pool, free weights, and an abundance of classes for all fitness levels, and even some great classes for kids. Yes, there are plenty of senior citizens that work out here and love to walk around the locker room in their birthday suit, but just look the other way people!! Love the splash pad in the summer months - I can get my tan on and the kids can run around and have fun! read more

The rec center is great, I have been going for years. This may lead you to believe I am in tip-top shape with a rippling, 6-pack so I will allow you to think this. Lots to do. I work out at the Rec Center on a pretty regular basis. I requested on at least two occasions to have the small handles for the cable machine replaced with another set of small handles. So, what does the person who orders the equipment do? That person ordered another set of large handles. Now they have three sets of large handles, which are too big for most women, and no sets of small handles. I think this will give you an idea of what the Rec Center thinks about the women who work out there. The workout equipment is not keep in top notch shape at all. Sometimes machines are out of order for weeks. If you want a place to work out, the Rec Center is not the place I would recommend for anyone. read more

This place is a ripoff. I signed up for a membership that covered me and my wife and my 3 year old son. Today I go up there to go swimming with my son who just turned 4. The guy at the counter tells me I have to pay for him to get in. I ask why is that if I signed a 1 year contract that was supposed to cover him since he was 3 when I signed up. He said that was the rules. I ask for the manager. The manager comes up and starts being sarcastic and being extremely rude. I ask why would I continue to pay for a membership that does not let my son in. I said I should be able to cancel my membership without any fees. He smirks and says well that's between u and our collection agency. At this point I say I want to talk to his boss. He says nobody above him is there. I will be calling tomorrow to get this issue resolved. This place is extremely unprofessional, rude and shady!!!! read more

This place is terrible. Staff consistently yells at the children. When signing up the staff did not inform us of what shorts are acceptable to swim when we signed up. My boys were kicked out because they insisted my boys had on gym shorts. Then all basketballs courts were unavailable. Crap for paying over $40 a month. Great place to go on a cloudy wet windy Fall day in Michigan

I booked a party here for my two year old's birthday. I was 9 weeks pregnant at the time and asked if they would help set up since I had a toddler and it was a lot of decorations to bring in from the car. They said here's a cart if you need it. I was like what about extra hands? They were like no we dont set up for you. Im like seriously I paid a lot of money for a little room come on now. Then they charge you if your not out by a specific time and surprise they don't help with the clean up either!! Oh and they charge you too if you leave without cleaning up. read more

Was a member here for 2 years and always enjoyed my experience there . I have a 4 year old son who loves going there for the pool , water slide and tree house play area . It's a bit crowded during rush hour and during said times hard to get on desired benches and machines in the weight rooms but all other times it isn't an issue . I believe it has everything to ne ed fitness wise regardless of your skill set . All the employees I have spoke too have always been helpful and also a good idea for kids birthday party's in the few banquet rooms they have . Love the out door inline hockey court in the summer and all the courts inside . Only complaint I have is pre teens and teens playing and running like bulls in a China shop in the tree house area which I've seen many times and most of those kids use bad language around the little ones . I have been going to Livonia Rec for around 10 years. I also belong to LA Fitness and was a member of Power House, in Novi and Planet Fitness in Livonia. All the other gyms have upgraded their weight machines, however Livonia Rec still has not upgraded their weight machines. I use their track, but go to La Fitness to use their weight machines. I hope Livonia Rec will upgrade their weight machines, to be in-line with the other gyms! read more

Its a good place for families, birthday parties and workout but regular lap swimmers are treated as 2nd class citizens. The two male managers are condensing neanderthals who talk to women like they are children. Great place until you have a complaint.. the 3rd star is for the lifeguards. read more

The Rec Center is a wonderful community resource. There is something here for everyone. The rec center has just about any kind of class you can think of from yoga to boot camps, from infant swim classes to senior wellness classes. They have a lot of water exercise classes which are great for anyone with joint issues. The pools include a lap pool and a leisure pool that has a children's area, a "lazy river", a water slide, and a general splashing around place. There are resistance machines and free weights as well as different types of cardio machines (bikes, tread mills, elliptical, rowing machines, etc.) and a walking track. There are 2 gyms that are set up for basketball and 2 that are more for things like pickle ball. There's a climbing wall and a tree fort for little ones (10 and under); there's also a child-care place where parents can drop off their young children while the parents use the facility. I have no idea what one of the previous reviewers is talking about "...I fear for my safety"; I've never felt at any risk there, either from other people inside the facility or out. Once while walking to the rec center, I saw somebody lurking in the bushes that border the far south end of the parking lot. I reported it to the front desk; they immediately sent some security people out to investigate. The rec center is open from 5 am to 11 pm on weekdays, 6 am to 8 pm on Saturdays and 7 am to 5 pm on Sundays. read more

This review is regarding the SWIM MEETS held here: The swim meet that is held here was VERY POORLY ran. First of all, you allow too many swimmers to compete, which means very limited to no seating for many parents in the bleachers. The people that found a seat in the bleachers would not move an inch to make room for others. A DIRECTOR unfortunately needs to come in, tell people to move their stuff, and make room for others. I had to STAND for 4, yes FOUR HOURS. It IS NOT fair to make people stand for 4 hours or longer. Also, not letting parents in the locker rooms to help young children get ready is RIDICULOUS. Stop making ridiculous rules like that just to make a rule. We are MOTHERS, not PERVERTS. Another mother barged passed and went inside like I should of. YOUNG CHILDREN NEED HELP. When my child never came out of the girls locker room, I went into the family locker room and found her dressing herself in front of other passing FATHERS!!!!! WTH!! TOTAL BS!!!!!!THATS WHY YOUNG DAUGHTERS NEED HELP!!!!!BTW, the guy collecting the $5 admission payment on Saturday morning was a SUPER jerk. Did I say that loud enough? He was SUPER RUDE. Clearly My swim meet experience was horrible here. Won't return. EVER. VERY poor job directing Jill, or whoever was in charge. read more

TERRIBLE gym. When they are trying to gain more members, they overcrowd classes that current members have paid for, river current broke down for months, gum and bandaids in all pools, children running wild in adult classes, manager, Scott, has no idea what is going on in his own programs, boys allowed in female dressing rooms, equipment is shabby, swim equipment has broken belts, torn gloves, etc. Overall not a very clean facility; out of control children everywhere. My son had an amazing experience on the rock wall today. The woman helping him was very positive and well versed in rock climbing. It was a challenging and successful day of rock climbing. He was able to climb 3 times for $10. Everyone should give it a try. It was well worth the money! read more
