I have been here before for drinks and love the atmosphere! Decided to have a late dinner on Friday and thankfully was able to get a last minute table reservation. Started dinner with the duck fat fries. They come with three dipping sauces and were amazing. We then shared two entrees, the grass fed filet with brussel sprouts and creamed spinach, and the leg of duck. The filet was cooked perfectly (slightly under medium rare) and the sides were both good. Large sides I must say as well. The leg of duck was lacking sadly. The flavor was great but the presentation did not show off the duck at all. We almost couldn't tell if there was any duck in it at all. The drinks here are always great and creative. After dinner we went upstairs. The upstairs is great but in the winter when they shut the windows people are still allowed to smoke and that really killed the desire to stay there as we reeked of smoke. Regardless I would come back again for dinner and drinks downstairs! read more

I chose Jack Rose for a birthday dinner with my whiskey-loving friend. Both of us had been to the upstairs portion for happy hour but never in the dining saloon for dinner. We had a great experience. We were greeted at the table with cheese sticks that tasted like upscale Cheez-Its. This is a huge compliment because we both LOVE Cheez-Its. :) Next, we were offered an amuse-bouche of a fried goat's head cheese ball topped with chow-chow and a remoulade. This was so amazing that we had to ask for a second helping, and thankfully, the chef obliged. We chose the chicken skins for our appetizer because...how can you not order chicken skins? They were even better than we thought I could put that green goddess sauce on everything! The whiskey-lover went with a flight consisting of a Bourbon, a Rye, and a Scotch. He thoroughly enjoyed them all, especially the Caribbean Cask Scotch. I'm a bit more timid, so I went with one of their cocktails. The name escapes me, but I know that it included Dickel Whiskey. For our entrees, I went with the Dorade, which was a whole fish topped with a fabulous sauce that had some heat from the bird's eye chili. Oh, and it came with a side of "Charleston rice" which was topped with fried garlic and some type of powdered chili. It was great. My friend chose the Roseda Ribeye cooked medium. The temp was spot on, and the meat had some great marbling yielding excellent flavor. All of the service we received was great, including the manager who came over to check on us throughout the meal and as we finished our entrees. Our waitress, Jess, was super helpful with our selections. In fact, she's the one who recommended the Caribbean Cask Scotch. I will definitely dine with them again in the future. :) read more

If you're like me and part of the working class, stopping here for a drink or two for a special treat can be a good time. But yeah, it's not gonna be a super affordable time. I would describe this place as pretty pretentious. Also there's inevitably going to be some sad looking old drunk guy sitting at the bar all day, so if you are okay with witnessing that, this is also a good place to hang out. But that kind of shit depresses me so I'll pass. The staff is knowledgeable but I also felt like they were kinda phoning it in. Took my whiskey lover bf here for vday. We had reservations and waited a couple of minutes to be seated, which was understandable because It was pretty crowded. Once we were seated we took a look at the drink menu and our waitress asked if we had ever been there before. Having never been there, and wanting to give my bf a meaningful whiskey tasting experience, I hoped for more guidance with the tasting flights. She didn't really provide any guidance so we just chose two flights to start and the fried chicken skins as an appetizer. The chicken skins were very good.They were a bit over salted, but hey, fried greasy chicken skin? yes and yes. We also ordered the biscuits which were delicious and were so full we decided to share an entree. We decided on the pasta and it was amazing. I really wish our whiskey tasting experience was more personal. I even made a note in my reservation that it was a vday gift for my whiskey loving bf and was hoping to have a better experience in that department. Was having a cordial conversation with attendees across the bar and the bouncer tried to claim I was yelling to folks cross the bar. Bottom line if you American American try somewhere else . This place is amazing. We've been To this place a couple times before for drinks. However, this is the first time we've been for dinner. We ordered an appetizer of the oysters and the biscuits with honey and it was so good. I almost didn't want to order dinner since I was so full. However I did. It was delicious I got the chicken pot pie, my husband got the rabbit ravioli, my aunt got the chef's tasting menu, and my uncle I'll look at the pot pie. The pot pie was delicious. The best I've ever had. I tested my aunts ribeye steak, and my husband rabbit, and both were pretty good as well. For dessert we got the Beignet and a pecan pie. Both to die for. Not only was the food good, but we were seated early and the waitstaff were certainly attentive and earned their tips. Definitely going to come back for food with friends. read more

I've been here a few times, always to the top floor/roof. This is definitely a good spot to come grab a drink and have a chill evening during the week. On the weekend it can get pretty packed but never too overwhelming. When it's warm out, the rooftop is a really pleasant place during happy hour time. read more

We had an event here tonight, and reserved the entire first floor. All of the wait staff and bartenders and management were so accommodating and friendly and wonderful. The drinks were great, the appetizers were amazing, and they were so accommodating. Our speeches caused the dinner to be delayed for longer than we thought, and they totally worked with our schedule. The chocolate hazelnut dessert was decadent - everyone was raving about it. At the end of the night, after most of our group had left, I realized that I had lost both of my new earrings. There were about 10 people searching the restaurant and they found both of them. Totally above and beyond, and I was so appreciative. We had a lovely evening, and I would definitely recommend them for a group event. read more

AWESOME PLACE. Pork Belly app was the best one we got (the biscuits were a close second). I'd stay away from the squid though... It's not bad, but it's just not as good as the other ones. The Venison was amazing, the cocktails were amazing, the server Aaron had an amazing knowledge of scotch and the like. A fantastic place to get a drink! It's pleasantly not crowded (esp. for Adams Morgan). It's casual. Rooftop is great. Drink selection is great. I've enjoyed having drinks here so often that I thought to give dinner a shot. The menu had me excited, but the food was ok. My fellow diner started with frog legs and had the venison. I had the sweetbreads and the skate. The frog legs were fried well. The venison was cooked right and the cherry sauce complimented it well. I didn't love what the mushrooms in did to the flavor of the sauce that came with my sweetbreads, and the waitress took it back, offered another appetizer and took it off the bill. (But I did like the sweetbreads themselves.) The skate was good, minus the mushrooms. Maybe my palette isn't developed enough to appreciate those mushrooms. We didn't necessarily think the food was worth the price, but overall the food was ok. (I did go get a slice of pizza afterwards.) Service has always been A+ there! Bartenders are friendly, accomodating and knowledgeable (find Amy). The waitress was accomodating, made recommedations and attentive. Definitely give it a go for drinks. read more

I understand times are tough at the moment and have not complained about how different restaurants are now and whatnot, but when my friend and I came to eat last week we had the worst service ever! Food was ok (DC prices, nothing to go crazy over) and our waitress was rather short and cold with us. When we went the restaurant was pretty empty so it was a little annoying at how ridiculously long our orders took as well as how long the waitress took to even greet us. She really only visited our table to take our order and to give us the check, and she seemed irritated when we were asking questions about the menu- she made me feel like an idiot when I asked where the bathroom was. I'm sorry to leave such a nasty review (I really never do this!) but the treatment we were given at this restaurant was just too terrible. read more

I usually only come in for happy hour because it is so close to home base but I've been in maybe a dozen times in the last 2 years. The place is always freezing, I can't imagine what they pay for utilities. It's rare I've seen the same faces more than a month or two in a row, so lots of turnover. Review only for drinks and late-night menu. Great selection of whiskey, pretty cool atmosphere. Very laid back crowd for an upscale bar, which I liked. The beer was also really good. Food was decent. Late night menu had kind of weird options, and not in the weird-but-kind-of-hipstery way where it still tasted good. Chicken skins are literally the skin of a chicken deep fried which made me feel like I was shaving minutes off my life each time I ate one, and I usually never care about the healthiness of food. Wings were good, but then again, why am I in an upscale restaurant ordering 6 wings for $12 ?! Service definitely lacked. Our waiter had a bad attitude but again I was in no rush and just hanging out so it didn't bother me too much, but when you are paying $60 for two appetizers and one drink its kind of annoying that you can't get decent service. Overall, I would recommend this place if you want a laid-back night at a nice bar to hangout with friends and have a few drinks. In my opinion, go somewhere else for food and service. read more

The atmosphere here is fantastic, shelves of whiskey for days, and all drinks sampled were great. One complaint: Our server was super friendly and ready to offer recommendations, however, when we told her we were going to split an order of the scallops, she neglected to mention that there would be three total scallops on the plate. Definitely wish she had said something since the "entree" cost $26 and we both left hungry, despite having split an appetizer as well (the homemade pretzels & dips were delicious). read more

Very rude server. Server demanded 20% tip for pouring whiskey and confronted my friend when not given 20%. It's not like a cocktail was made. Anyone can pour whiskey. Was invited here for a business dinner. First off....this place has the best selection of bourbon I have ever seen. Bartender was very informative in helping to pick the right ones. Quality of food was also very good. Not large menu, but good food and appetizers. The food service in restaurant was not near as good as service at the bar. Our waiter was not helpful with selecting a bourbon and did not come around often enough to check up on us. Our party was interested in trying one more bourbon, but we gave up waiting. Stick with appetizers and bourbon at the bar for this place and you will not be disappointed. read more

I will come here again because my S.O. loves scotch and whiskey and I understand they are likely still getting kinks worked out. That being said, my 2 hour experience there was 2 stars at best. First thing, the employees do not match the ambiance very well. The doorman was very cold and uninviting. The place looks really polished and impressive, yet the bartenders seem dive-bar-ish (as far as their social interaction and capabilities). Our main bartender was either p*ss drunk or lacks the capacity to form coherent sentences. She attempted to explain the different levels of Glenmorangie and gave up after she realized she had no idea about anything scotch-related. I asked her if there are any specialty cocktails and she stated there were not, but she can make anything I would like, like cran and vodka. thumbs down there. Their little note on yelp stated they have craft cocktails on the roof top. . . . why can't they make them downstairs? I am hoping I can revisit this review with a more positive second impression. read more

Condensed Version: Drinks- 5 stars (when they have the drink you want at the bar location you want). Food- 1.5 stars. Service- Minus 5 stars for arguing with the customer, acting like a total douche, and making up the contents of menu items. And never once bringing the manager over to hear the concerns about his/her restaurant, thus forcing me to yelp about it. I haven't yelped in a while. But after my experience at Jack Rose last week, I felt compelled to help the metro-area diners who are thinking about investing their time and money in Jack Rose. I live less than a 5-minute walk away from JR, and was excited when it first opened to finally have a rooftop in the Adams Morgan area that didn't reek of the weekends' bad decisions. I have been here 5-6 times and eaten and both the upstairs bar and the downstairs restaurant. Coincidentally, both dining and drinking establishments have the same name, are located in the same building, and are under the ownership of the same group. But there are certain drink selections that you cannot have downstairs, and vice versa. The first time I encountered this situation, I was at the downstairs bar with a friend trying to order the name of a sparkling red wine that I forgot. The bartender reminded me it was the Labrusco wine, and I was excited she remembered and asked for a glass. Her response: "Yeah, we serve that upstairs." silence. Me: "Oh yeah that's where I had it last time, can I have a glass please?" pause. Bartender: "We only serve that upstairs." I was really confused. I thought it was the same dining/drinking establishment and could not fathom the idea that someone could not walk upstairs to get a glass and bring it down. I didn't think this was an out of line request- most restaurants and bars don't have everything behind the bar and often have to walk upstairs or downstairs to get food and beverages. When the bartender insisted that no one at Jack Rose was capable of doing this, I decided to go upstairs and order the drink. The bartenders upstairs were very welcoming, and to Jack Rose's credit, the drinks are pretty damn good. I went back this past Thursday to have dinner with another friend, and had a hankering for a burger, which I thought would be a pretty standard menu item at a slightly-more upscale whiskey bar "dining saloon." Apparently that is too run of the mill for Jack Rose. And their entrees are priced in the $16-$30 range. We decided to split some small plates and ordered the oysters. Pretty safe item as long as the oysters are fresh, edible, and opened for you. You don't really cook them, so I would think it would be hard to eff up such a simple item. But, again, I was wrong. Apparently they have never heard of cocktail sauce or raw horseradish. Or horseradish at all. One of the busyboys set down a white plate with three smaller bowls of accompaniments. When I asked the server what the beige juice was in one of the bowls next to the vinegar (the only standard accompaniment they provided for oysters) he told me it was "tomato juice." I thought tomato juice was generally red...but he said no, its the juice that is created after tomatoes sit in water. Um, really? So, would that be dirty tomato water? Then I asked what was in the third side accompanying dish- I was told it was cabbage. But there was no cabbage to be found. It looked like bacon fat. Smelled like bacon fat. Tasted like bacon fat. I told the server the dish contained an overwhelming amount of meat and he insisted it was just cabbage. Minus 5 points for the server arguing with me about the facts of the situation. And he was ill-informed about the food he was serving! The tomato run-off ended up being caviar juice. CAVIAR JUICE? WTF? It tasted like mild salt-water. Clearly I was very unsatisfied with the dish but he never once offered to take it back and get something else, or remove it from the bill. Awful service. At this point, eff it. I'll just get another drink, at least they should be foolproof considering its a bar. So I ordered off the specialty drink menu- then the server came back to announce that the drink I wanted wasn't available. Wow. Definitely time to leave. And Never, ever come back. read more

14 dollar cocktails and the bartenders can't even free pour? Very amateurish and club like for a place that is trying to establish itself as a serious place for scotch and bourbon drinkers. The bartenders literally had ounce measuring cups to measure every pour. I would not recommend this place for high end bourbon and scotch drinkers--they'll have what you are looking for, but the bar tending will kill the atmosphere. An article in the washingtonian tried to name drop some of the country's higher end cocktail lounges as a template for Jack Rose's model. If that is truly the case, they need to close the place down and re think there master plan. read more

It was a pleasant experience trying all different kinds of aged bourbon there. The bourbon expert there also gave us a very informative little lecture of a couple of their best selling bottles and answered all our questions professionally and patiently. Food was all nicely prepared and delicious. The only downside is our waiter. He seemed unbelievablely impatient and pushy, always on a rush, couldn't hold a conversation without distraction. He never came back to check on us with our needs unless we wanted to try more bourbon. There were 6 of us and he had to come back 3 times to make sure he got our entrees order correctly. We all agreed not to tip him much, yet the bill came to the table with 20% tip automatically added. That meal cost us a little more than 700 bucks. Oh well, so he received a nice amount which he didn't deserve. read more

I don't know where to start with how great Jack Rose is. FOOD: Oh, deer! The venison on the saloon dinner menu was amazing. My first time trying venison and it was cooked to perfection and served with a cherry reduction glaze. They rotate the menu frequently and often showcase less common, more gamey meats, like the venison or wild boar. For appetizers from the dinner menu, the buttermilk fried frog legs were pretty good and the biscuits were outstanding. DRINKS: Whiskey -- this is the largest whiskey bar in DC. If you want it, they probably have it. If you have any questions, search out Harvey Fry for lots of good info on whiskey and good stories about life. You'll recognize him as the older gentleman with a long white beard, suspenders, and a bandana around his head. Cocktails -- inventive and generally use good quality spirits. They run $10-13 but that's about average for DC and is worth the quality. Hoptails -- you can all thank me for these. My first time at Jack Rose I QQed about there not being any cocktails made with beer since none of the cocktails on the menu that day appealed to me and I don't drink straight whiskey. My boyfriend talked with the bartender who got creative and I tried two hoptails that night made especially for me, one of which was damn good...if only I could remember what was in it. A few weeks later we returned to find a permanent section of hoptails on the menu. Booya. Beer -- Naheem who runs the beer program used to work at ChurchKey which should be enough of an explanation of what they offer here. This isn't a beer bar, but what they have on tap is quality. Plus, M-F 5-7:30 full sized drafts are $2 off for happy hour downstairs. EVENTS: It seems there's always something going on at Jack Rose. Whether it's an open air Cinco de Mayo party upstairs with a simultaneous Kentucky Derby viewing downstairs, private events in the smaller upstairs rooms, or events showcasing whiskey, there's always good fun to be had and great drinks to match the occasion. Most recently we attended a Whistle Pig tasting and were impressed not only by the 10 and 11 year ryes we sampled, but also by the punch highlighting the 10 year concocted specifically for the event. OUTDOOR SEATING: The entire second floor is an outdoor terrace...but has a cover for inclement weather. There are three bars up there: a main bar with a visible woodfire grill, a tiki bar, and a balcony room which is only used for private events and that has a sliding door to an uncovered patio. The only bad thing is that smoking is allowed on the whole level, even when the canopy is in place. This is a grown up bar in Adams Morgan that excels at just about everything it tries. It's a great place for a nice date, dinner, drinks, or just to appreciate whiskey. read more

This place will always hold a special place in my heart because it's where I first fell in love...with scotch. The dim lighting and rich wood will make you feel like you should be wearing a smoking jacket and have a cigar in your hand. Suffice to say, it's not like the rest of the places in the area. I'd imagine this is a scotch lover's paradise, but it's great for beginners, too! I came in here having only sipped my first taste of scotch a few hours before, and the bartender, BK, recommended that I try Cragganmore 12 year single malt for my second foray into the scotch world. To say it tasted like the nectar of gods to me would be an understatement. I'm sure all the scotch pros are scoffing at me right now. I can just hear you all collectively sighing and thinking "What a noob." But BK insisted that the Cragganmore 12 year beats a lot of the 18 years for a fraction of the price and I'm not about to argue with the man with the alcohol. When Cragganmore and I get married, BK will be the best man since he introduced us. He'll probably give a drunken speech at the reception and embarrass us, but you can't stay angry at the man who introduced you to the love of your (scotch) life forever, so I'll definitely be back. The only thing holding Jack Rose back from 5 stars are the cheddar biscuits--they were served ice cold and definitely won't be served at the wedding reception. read more

Condescending and unnecessarily unprofessional.... Those may seem like strong words from a patron of an establishment that didn't smack you in the face as you walked in but Jack Rose is perhaps one of the most abysmal attempts at service I have ever seen. We scheduled a party of 5 for a late night dinner and entered 30 min early for a drink upstairs in the outdoor bar (no worries this isn't a gripe about a wait time)... after 25 min we had a call letting us know our table was ready and that we should head downstairs (they knew we were upstairs as we had checked in). I asked if we could get a round and bring it down to our table to which the cheery hostess said "Of course!" so we ordered 2 vodka sodas and a Pork Slap (can) and headed to the stairs. Now mind you this is ONE single establishment separated by a flight of stairs at the entrance that leads to the bar/lounge on the second floor away from the main entrance on the first floor. At the staircase down a bouncer stopped our group and said "WOAH - you can't take those drinks downstairs." We were quite taken back given what the hostess just said. I inquired about our full (and 23 dollars) worth of drinks and the bouncer said "No." When I pressed on about taking our drinks to our table he insisted that we wait until we finish the drinks but that we could wait for a hostess to bring the two vodka drinks down. As for the canned beer - "No, we don't allow canned beverages downstairs." Well, too good for your own beverages? I offered to pour it in to a glass and take it down with a hostess which received the ever-so-five-star response "why don't you just chug it down?" So okay, you are too high class to allow your OWN beverages in your own establishment because of 18 feet of stairs. Asking again I was told it was "illegal in DC to pour a canned beer in to a glass" - not something you should say to a party which includes 3 DC barred attorneys. But, fine.... 5 minutes later, my stomach hurting from my chug, we had a hostess to "escort" our two other drinks down the stairs. We followed our precious contraband behind her. At the table we had a good meal, it was tasty and service was responsive. However at the end of the meal staff came to collect our plates. We had short ribs sauce slathered in a bowl, pasta sauce rimming a large plate, mashed potatoes clumped in a deep service dish, steak juice oozing on a plate... all waiting to be enjoyed and before they pulled the plates we asked kindly "can we have some more bread to soak up all this goodness (a testament to how much we enjoyed the meal)" but instead of a polite "sure" or even a "that may cost extra" we got a "Seriously?? You want bread for that? You want me to get you bread so you can soak it in your food?" and once again all the pretentious stench came flying back to us ... we were too disgusted to order dessert. We still tipped out generously but we will never be back. Jack Rose has to get over itself or it won't have anyone else to act like this in the future. 2.0 stars because the food was enjoyable but the score was appropriately decimated by such poor practices and pretentious behavior. read more

Ladies! Don't ever try to change from your heels into your flats at this joint! The bouncers will immediately decide you are too 'intoxicated to function' if you stumble as you change from three inch heels to something a bit more suitable. And if you talk to a 'manager' get ready to speak to someone on a power trip who feels as if she is a God who decides whether people are sober or not. No civil conversation after the fact will make up for the fact that you lost balance as you changed shoes. Used to love this place, but after being treated worse than an undergrad with a fake id, the overpriced drinks are not worth the humiliation. read more

4 Times, Why am I still surprised? I've been there to eat at the (over-priced, not-good enough) downstairs restaurant, I've tried to eat upstairs at the relaxed, loft space, and been driven out by noise, smoke, and unpleasant staff. I've tried to eat at the bar downstairs but been told by snobby staff that there is only a special bar menu. And today, my dad and I showed up around 5:00 pm to get a drink. We went upstairs; I ask specifically if we had to sit anywhere after the hostess (smoking a cigarette) asked if we were eating. I said no. Her gesture suggested no problem and we headed for a table away from smoke and TV. So she intervened to say that we had to sit at the bar, where there was only one stool. I asked in the much-loved balcony was open, but no. We left. We thought about going to the bar but we just went to Larry's down to street where I knew the service would be personal. Who needs all the kinds of bourbon in the world if you can't even be seated in an empty restaurant and served with grace? read more
