Dear reader, Mr. Smith's is one of those places that is simply easy to like. I got a strawberry margarita and some mozzarella sticks to take the edge off, and both did exactly what was required of them. The prices were also refreshingly cheap, which feels especially commendable for Georgetown, and they always seem to have some kind of happy hour or deal going on. It is the sort of establishment that understands a bargain is still one of society's greatest pleasures. I also really liked the vibe here. It has a cool old-school feel, there are TVs around, the music is good, and there are tons of places to sit so it never feels too cramped. It is the kind of place where you stop in casually and then realize you have been there much longer than originally intended, which I consider a very positive sign. The location is another major point in its favor. Being right across from the Georgetown waterfront makes it a perfect stop before or after a walk by the water, and that alone gives it a certain advantage in the local social circuit. Overall, Mr. Smith's is a very solid Georgetown option for drinks, snacks, and a reliably good time. I would absolutely go back. read more

I'm conflicted! This should be more of a 3.5 but I have to give it a 3 since there are no half stars. My coworker and I came to Happy Hour before an event in Georgetown. Mr Smiths is hidden but if you head to the southern end of Wisconsin AVE NW it's the second business on Water St NW. Parking is tricky, it's Georgetown, be prepared to park in a nearby garage or if you're lucky and patient find street parking and pay via Park Mobile. We lucked up and got a street parking space! Score! The bar area was not too packed but only one bartender to manage the entire restaurant so that became a challenge. He was super nice and welcoming but too overwhelmed. We got our order taken after about a ten minute wait. Drinks also came about 15 minutes after we sat, so ten minutes just to wait and five minutes to have him make it after the order. It appeared that it was a shift change but still only one bartender for the evening. Ambiance is like Cheers the T.V. show. Literally a pub. Prices are totally reasonable! So I'd definitely come back, I think they definitely need more bartenders and/or manager presence in the front to help. Team work makes the dream work and there was none of that there. We did notice a guy heading home when the bartender asked to be "cashed out", I assume that was the manager trying to hit the front door but if you see your bartender struggling, step in don't try and leave. We came here for happy hour and sat at the bar. I ordered the biggie nachos ($15) and biggie means BIGGIE! The chips were crispy and fresh, and the dish is complete with guacamole, sour cream, jalapeños, and layered with beef chili, cheese, black beans, and pico de gallo - this is a party platter meant for sharing. For a smaller version, they have the beef nachitos available at happy hour. My friend ordered the Chicken California entree ($23) and again, the serving was huge! It came with chicken, shrimp, rice pilaf, broccoli, and avocado. I'm impressed with the portion sizes here. You will leave full. They have $6 drinks during happy hour and $6 small plates from 4-10pm. Service was laidback, but they were helpful and responsive when you needed something. With its old school aesthetic & delicious food, this place has so much potential but quite frankly, it's the staff who ruin it. Everyone who works there is rude & abrasive, and I had to keep repeating myself to them because they barely spoke any English. Our waiter was especially unpleasant to deal with. We were a party of four, & when he brought us our food, he practically got all four of our orders wrong. So instead of apologizing for the mistake, he snapped at us & begrudgingly sent the orders back to the kitchen. Thankfully, my burger went from well done to the perfect medium rare I requested but that still doesn't make up for how crappy our experience was, especially since, later that night, it happened to be piano bar karaoke night. The guy running it was very difficult to get along with too. He was 20 minutes late because of traffic, which is not his fault, but what is his fault is that he also gave everyone an attitude. It was supposed to be "karaoke" but almost the entire restaurant, including me & my party, left because he said there was only a certain list of songs to choose from. Most of them were from the 1950s-60s, & he basically gave us a hard time about that because we & everyone else there that night were a bunch of people in their 20s & 30s who were looking to ring in the weekend after a hard week of work like anyone our age should, but somehow, he expected us to be mind readers & learn all those songs on the spot. Came here on a drinking passport and decided to try out 2 different types of sangria. I was greeted as soon as I entered and was allowed to sit at bar. The bar was crowded but there were seats available at the far end. It was energetic in the bar with football games playing, Christmas music and a small late brunch crowd. Great food and fun at this informal brasserie that has been around for decades. I liked the burger and fries.

Walking into Mr. Smith's feels like walking into a tavern. It's got an old timey feel to it. We came here for a private event. I was very impressed with the food. In particular, there was a delicious Cobb salad. The chicken tenders were also great! Some of the other food an appetizers were just fine. We had some beer, and the service at the bar was good! I would come back here again either pre or post movies. read more

I popped in here on a very hot Saturday around 6pm and chilled at the bar to wait on a friend. The bartender informed that they offer happy hour all day and once I saw that margaritas were $6.50/ea, I was hooked! This deal is almost unheard of in D.C.. I definitely ordered 3 margs and they were all yummy. The margarita options were passionfruit, strawberry, traditional lime, and spicy jalapeño. Later into the night it started to get crowded by the bar and people started to do karaoke on the piano. I will definitely come back and recommend this spot to others. read more

We were in Washington, DC a month ago and wanted to try someplace different. We, of course, looked on YELP to find a place that was quaint, good food and had a high review. We were definitely not disappointed when we arrived. Large bar area for sitting. There is also tables downstairs and upstairs for sitting. Went here to see a friend perform at cabaret night (one Monday a month; pretty cool!). There were only TWO people working in the front of the house, so service was SO slow. If I needed anything, I had to leave my table at wait at the bar for a no insignificant amount of time. And while they have $6.50 cocktails (which is pretty good in a town like DC), they will upcharge you without telling you if they suggest a different spirit (I asked for Absolut vanilla because Absolut products are on their discount list, but they didn't have that, only Stoli, but didn't tell me it would cost more even though it was his suggestion to use that instead). The food is edible, but nothing to write home about; I had to drown my chicken fingers in ketchup they were so dry. I'd recommend coming here on cabaret night if you enjoy watching (pretty good!) singers sing showtunes, but otherwise, there are a million other bars to choose from. read more

Wanted a little bite to eat after kayaking. They had cheap small meals and some drinks for only $5 which is a steal in DC. The server and host were super friendly. Loved the service. The food was just ok at best. They had a lot of $5 options which I loved to see. The coconut shrimp reminded me of something from the Costco frozen section. Tasted good but nothing fancy. The blackened shrimp skewer just tasted like warmed up shrimp with seasoning. The wine was a good selection. I think they were surprised I ordered wine. Couldn't understand what kind he said it was but I was satisfied with it. I'm happy nothing was expensive but not worth going back unless I want to grab a cheap drink. What elevated this year's National Shirley Temple day from the mere obligatory consumption of a Shirley Temple to a truly Temple-tastic evening were the friends made along the way. Yes, I had the pleasure and privilege of enjoying a satisfying Shirley Temple courtesy of Mr. Smith in the very pleasant company of my dear friend and now number one indulger of my possible over-interest in Shirley Temples, Maria. Maria, despite not liking ANYTHING cherry flavored, celebrated today by ordering a Shirley Temple. A true friend indeed. If Maria wasn't enough, David Bowie also made an appearance this year, as we enjoyed The Labyrinth shortly after. I really enjoyed the film seeing that it had several old loves of mine: old school green screen technology, borderline demonic imagery that targets children, and David Bowie to name a few. The Labyrinth is most certainly an ideal Shirley Temple companion for those of you who are struggling to pick a movie to enjoy your Shirley Temple with. SUBJECT: UNSANITARY / RODENT (MOUSE) ISSUE Today, Tuesday, November 12, 2019, between 5:23 PM and 6:30 PM, my sister and I visited Mr. Smith's of Georgetown. We sat at the bar, and the bartender, Julia, gave us white-rolled silverware. One pair had a strand of hair and I requested another pair. That was the first incident... After I finished eating my burger and fries - and while my sister was halfway done eating hers - she spotted a MOUSE... I didn't believe her and immediately looked in her direction and asked her, "Where??" She pointed in the direction of a set of glasses (turned down next to the cash register - the side closest to the window) and I saw the mouse ON THE BAR...CRAWLING...AROUND AND BETWEEN THE GLASSES. (As most people know, when you see one mouse or one roach, that usually means, like Legion, there are many...) I immediately got up, flagged and called for the bartender. She came over and started looking for the mouse but could not find it. She made a few comments but the one comment that stood out was "Welcome to DC." I understand she was trying to add levity to the situation but that was inappropriate. I asked for the manager, he came over and we explained the situation. I told him I was not comfortable paying for the meal and he insensitively replied, "Well you ate all the food didn't you," and my response was something like, "Before we saw a mouse." He said he would remove the drinks but the "food is already happy hour prices," in a hostile manner. I thought to argue with him and retort, "There's no telling what goes on in the kitchen, which could be even worse," but I agreed to pay for the food since I ate it...and I already knew what I planned to do... At any rate, the manager's response to the entire situation was untactful, unprofessional, and in my opinion, the offer was unreasonable for two patrons who spotted a rodent on the bar and hair on rolled silverware. Regardless of them being in business for ~53 years (as it was stated in a response to a previous reviewer), there is no excuse for the manager's poor customer service. In this situation, "poor" can be substituted with "lack of". He was also very rude and condescending. Obviously, I do not recommend visiting this establishment for several reasons. read more

I had such low expectations, but I was so impressed. It's a very low key, unassuming old school bar in a part of town filled mostly with generic places. But oh man do they nail the execution with nice people, stellar drinks, and unbeatable prices. Everyday but Saturday they have early happy hour AND late night happy hour after 10. For just $5.50 I had one of the best gin martinis I have had in DC on par with a martini I have paid $14 elsewhere. After two I was floating in heaven. My wife had the sangria, which tasted a little coconutty, but despite being a sangria purist, she still loved it. Sangria is also $5.50 on happy hour. I have walked by this place for years but now will be back. Pro tip: get a $4 falafel bowl from Falafel Inc up the street and enjoy it as the sun sets along the waterfront. Then come here. Y'all. Just don't. Went here to grab a quick bite and a beer before catching a movie at the AMC next door. Save yourself and your money and just avoid. The ambiance is that of a typical Irish bar. Fine. We ordered the onion rings, the Irish stew, and a Caesar salad. The Irish stew was not edible, and believe me when I tell you I am *not* a picky eater. They brought us a house salad instead of a Caesar. The onion rings were passable. Realized this is my 25th review of a DC business. This is my first review of a business in Georgetown. To be honest with you, I'm not a fan of Georgetown for a couple of reasons, but when I was new to the area, I hadn't developed a negative opinion yet. I moved to the DC area in October 2011. In November, I went to a Meetup, which was bar hopping, and made a friend. And in December 2011, that new friend & I met at the 'Friendliest Saloon in Town', Mr. Smith's for brunch. I remember that they definitely lived up to their slogan. They were friendly; this is uncharacteristic of the Georgetown neighborhood. The brunch food I got was pretty good. It wasn't anything outstanding, but it was good, and the portion size was big. Overall, I think this a decent option in Georgetown that is reasonably priced, and I would come back here. read more
