we came here for NYE - they had a full day planned for events, all with no cover which is rare and nice. started with a late reservation in the dining saloon. this was my first time being here and the interior was warm and dark - perfect vibe for a whiskey bar (think: if a mahogany or tobacco candle was a space). they gave us complementary champagne for the holiday. fun start to the evening. we then ordered several drinks: - pineapple milk punch - light, easy drinking, sweet but refreshing - golden age - didn't taste this one. came with a few pieces of popcorn to complete the taste. my friend liked it enough to order 2. - scotch, coffee & a cigar - boozy, served in a coup glass. obviously for people who appreciate scotch. not sure if i'm one of them (which i recognize that this is a whiskey bar so that's a personal issue) - espresso martini with bourbon - nice espresso start with a wave of warmth after. i've never had bourbon as the liquor in an espresso martini but it was a nice take imo. for food: - apricot jalapeño wings - big jack overall, the only thing i really disliked was the wings. i couldn't taste the apricot at all. i was under the impression it would be an apricot glaze, but the wings had zero sauce. additionally, the jalapeños were sliced and just thrown on top. i thought that was weird to not include it in seasoning / sauce (?) Pleasantly surprised!!! I am not a brown liquor drinker (Whiskey/Bourbon) so I wasn't sure how much I was going to like Jack Rose Dining Saloon. The reviews on Yelp were hit or miss, and certainly never thought a place known the world over for whiskey/bourbon would have good food...... I WAS WRONG!!!! Went with a couple friends for Sunday brunch with absolutely no expectations. Figured I would find nothing to drink (that I liked) and have some mediocre bar food. Wow when I was beyond surprised when that was not the case at all. This is definitely a place for everyone, even those who don't drink at all. Inside the restaurant is gorgeous, well laid out to display there huge collection of whiskey and bourbon. It is certainly not a stuffy feel with high ceilings and a very long bar that could accommodate quite a few people. We dined at the upstairs terrace which although I would consider it inside, the great city of Washington DC considers it "outside" so it can remain open during the COVID shutdown of indoor dining. Such a beautiful area to dine in with large windows and a fireplace to give you that indoor/outdoor feeling. The entire restaurant was very clean, and you could tell a lot pride was taken in the whole place. The staff member that took care of us throughout our brunch was absolutely top notch. Beyond professional, courteous, knowledgeable about whiskey/bourbon and the many variations of cocktails they serve. She made it a truly enjoyable experience and I could not thank her enough for that. The food.... oh so very good! We enjoyed the Chicken and Waffles, Deviled Eggs, Jalapeño Hushpuppies, and the Biscuits and Gravy. Everything was spot on delicious, with absolutely no complaints. What I expected to be typical bar food ended up being a meal that you could tell was thought out and prepared very well. The drinks.... I will only speak for my friend who is a bourbon aficionado, along with being a Old Fashion aficionado as well. He exclaimed that his old fashion was the "Best In DC", and I will have to take his word on it as I don't drink bourbon. A full service restaurant down below and a super laid back "saloon" up top specializing in a WIDE variety of Whiskey Bourbon , over 2,600 to be exact and oh yes, the upper level is cigar friendly!!! Food first! The Rockfish atop a healthy portion of shrimp and grits is one AWESOME meal! The chicken liver appetizer, deviled eggs, fried oysters and saloon wings are all a hit! Sad to report that the brussel sprouts are nearly inedible because of the sour seasoning that's grilled in. Please revisit that recipe, especially since I'm a huge brussel sprouts lover! The neighboring table had the NY Strip and it looked divine, so that'll be my next meal for sure!! The restaurant itself is a nice size, dimly lit and a bit more upscale than your normal casual dining spot. So leave the sneakers and hoodie at home.. Lol! Upstairs is what sets Jack Rose apart from most restaurants in the city. It's large, loud, fun, with a retractable roof. If you chose to eat, they have a saloon menu which is a microcosm of the full service menu downstairs! Cigar lovers can relax, lay back and smoke while drinking their favorite Bourbon, no questions asked! They do have a sectioned off area upstairs where smoking is not allowed, that's just for information purposes only, I have no use for that place.. Lol! My biggest disappointment is Jack Rose is next to a moderate sized parking lot that their patrons can't use. It's the overflow lot for Lauriol Plaza two blocks down the street. We went for happy hour and had a great time! Unfortunately they didn't have a huge selection for happy hour options but their beers were good. They were out of a lot of selections, but it's understandable if it was a busy night. For appetizers, we got the Mac and cheese balls and chicken skins! The skins were a bit salty and the Mac and cheese balls could've used more salt haha. But still very good! Would go back again because the roof was a really pretty view. read more

Such a fun experience! The selection of bourbon was unbelievable. My server was extremely knowledgeable and at times admitted when he didn't know something. The food selection was small and a little bit on the expensive side but it was worth it for the experience. This place is hopping but still charging a 4% "recovery surcharge" in 2024. They charge $26 for a pasta dish and you can buy a 1oz pour of multiple beverages for $1k. Honest pricing on the menu 4% higher is not going to turn away customers. The fine print fee is yet another cash grab by greedy multiple restaurant owning groups (never once seen a single outfit establishment pull this) hoping people won't say anything after enough whiskey when they get the bill and not caring about their employees enough if customers deduct it from the tip. They removed when asked but customers shouldn't have to. It's on the menu but I like many did not see it until the bill. Not sure if they lost 4% of customers but they lost me. Took a colleague and his wife for dinner to celebrate his promotion last night. We had reservations for 6:30. Chris was our waiter and although he seemed nice he appeared to be very unenthusiastic about being there. We waited an extremely long time for our drinks to come out. Food was okay. I ordered whiskey wings and they had good flavor. My husband, who has a garlic allergy was told by the server that he could order Mac and cheese, hush puppies or deviled eggs as an appetizer. We then ordered a flight of whiskey and a bottle of wine. When waiter brought back to our table a good 10 - 15 mins later, he tipped the tray towards our table spilling the whiskey, water and wine glasses onto the table and all over myself, my husband and our friends. My husband was literally soaked from his shit to his pants and underwear. It took forever for the staff to come and assist the clean up meanwhile we were sitting in whiskey and water with shattered glass on the table and around the floor. Never once did we have a manager come over and apologize. Once we ended up gathering the chards or glass from our table and soaking up liquid from the floor it stayed on our table for another good 15-20 mins, when I server finally reappeared with our bottle of wine. Only this time he was smelling like weed. Guess he needed to go out back and chill out for a bit before he tended to our table. Finally, another gentleman, one who was actually well versed in whiskey delivered the flight. Our main course took about 45 to a good hour to come to the table. Friends ordered rib eye and said it was delicious. I ordered the bone marrow since I wasn't starving after the wings. Thank goodness because that $17 bone marrow had no marrow at all but did come with 4 small rolls which I ended up eating since they were so expensive! For a $330 meal and such a horrific experience, I would have expected something as compensation. They offered us a $10 discount! I really have to say, if it wasn't for our company, they would have been the worst dining experience of my life. read more

Absolutely amazing the staff was awesome and very attentive. Our one bartender frank gave better service than two bartenders combined. We went for a friends birthday party two weeks ago in the private room upstairs. The private room was perfect because it was a cold night out but the room had a fire place. Complete with our package we had open bar and passed hor d'oeurves. My favorite of them was probably the crab cake (because duh who doesnt love crab cakes or) the steak kebab. Since all the appetizers were so good i will have to go back and try out their dinner one time. The open bar was fantastic and i finally learned how to correctly pronounce glenmorangie which is quite a feat. Overall I loved this place I had been wanting to visit for some time and hadn't got the chance to but now i will make plans to be back. OO, i almost forgot i really tested the bartenders handwriting he kept writing on my whiskey sours at my request. Worth a visit for any whiskey aficionado. They claim to have the largest whisky collection in Western Hemisphere, and I don't doubt it. Literally awesome whiskey bar. The variety offered is unparalleled, I understand there are more than 1000 available options of whiskey, bourbon and rye. We had 2 fantastic old-fashioned made with Macallan, very nice. However, what I liked the most was the bartender versatility to make other nice cocktails with other spirits, for example, I had a Rum Old-fashioned with Santa Teresa 1796, it was very nice. I also saw the bartender working with tequila as well. Recommended for drinks (we didn't try the food). A must visit DC staple and the go to spot for whiskey lovers. They have a whiskey book with thousands of options, and you can get any in a 1 oz or 2 oz pour. If you are not a whiskey fan, you're still in luck because they have a great list of unique cocktails that changes frequently. In previous visits, the breakfast club has been one of my wife's favorite cocktails in life, with cream and cinnamon on top of the liquor. The last several times I have been in, they have offered some incredible barrel aged stouts if you're a beer lover. The space is huge, with high ceilings and a massive wood paneled bar along with several dining tables. The ambiance is dim and sexy, and I don't know if it is just my eyes playing tricks on me, but I smell a faint hint of wood. They also offer different areas for different experiences. In the basement is a more intimate speakeasy type spot, and upstairs there is an outdoor patio area, but they allow smoking there, which frankly I find gross. The main bar on the ground level, though, is where you'll probably end up. The bar is super long so grab a seat or some standing room, and you're sure to have a great time! read more

We happened to stumble upon an awesome promotion event happening at the bar for Ardbeg scotch where we got tickets for five pours of samples/cocktails while the servers came around with hors d'oeuvres. BF and I were thoroughly confused that we were getting free drinks and great apps... we were like what did we miss? How much does this cost?? But it's cool that this bar has these types of promotional events. After the tasting, we went downstairs and got a table. BF's friend is a regular there and tends to spend a lot on fancy scotch, so the bar gave us a complimentary sampling appetizer for the table which was super nice of them. My friend asked for a 2 oz whiskey and they brought him 1 oz and told him they didn't have anymore left. The food was not great. The truffle fries were soggy, the bison sliders were OK, and the dijon lamb porterhouse was fine. We're probably going to go get pizza next door after this, to be honest. Went here on a sat evening around 11pm. They close the kitchen by 11pm. So did not get to taste their food. We got chairs at the bar. They have a very good collection of Whiskey's. The bar tender was very knowledgeable and the service was quick. We tried two Tasting Flights, 1. Diversity of Japan (smooth and fruity) 2. Shades of Peat - More on the very dry side. We also tried the Hibiki 17 and Oban 18. The latter was much smooth than Hibiki. I would highly recommend this place if you are into Whiskey's. I am definitely going here again. I felt like I was walking into a gentleman's parlour/library where the shelves were lined with fine whiskies and scotch instead of books. There are five rooms to choose from at Jack Rose: the dining saloon, open-air terrace, balcony room (for private parties), tiki bar, and the cellar. The dining saloon and the cellar have the most atmosphere of the five rooms. Reservations are required for the cellar on Friday and Saturday. During our visit we dined at a booth in the saloon that overlooked the bar. There are over 1,600 different types of whiskey are stored under one roof, making this the largest collection of whiskey in the western hemisphere. Note: If you visit www.jackrosediningsaloon.com the homepage will state exactly how many bottles of whiskey are on the wall (today it is 2,687!). Rare and unique bottles can be found at Jack Rose as well as whiskey on draft! The bartenders at Jack Rose are all "whiskey geeks" and enthusiastically share their knowledge of whiskey with customers. My husband really enjoyed trading whiskey stories with our server. After discussing some of my husband's favorite whiskies the server prepared a flight of whiskey for my husband to try. He brought all of the bottles to our table so that my husband could see the labels and learn more about each bottle. My mother-in-law and I do not share the same enthusiasm for whiskey as my husband has, but we still enjoyed sampling whiskey from my husband's flight and listening to server explain what gives whiskey its' color and taste. I wanted to like the whiskey, but it tasted mostly like "burning" to me. I preferred sniffing the whiskey and detecting the hints of smoky and peaty notes. Besides whiskey, Jack Rose offers wine, beer, and other spirits. My theory is when in Rome, do as the Romans do so I ordered a whiskey-based cocktail, Hoosier Daddy, which was a spicy and delicious concoction! We only ordered two appetizers during our visit. Both were delicious and I would have ordered dinner if we didn't already have reservations elsewhere. The raw oysters were fresh and tasty, but my favorite was the steak tartare. The steak tartare is accompanied with Serrano chilis and is garnished with house-made potato ruffles. You don't have to be a whiskey enthusiast to have a five-star experience at Jack Rose. If you want to just walk in and get a drink at the bar they have upstairs and downstairs for that. We decided to go with a reservation to ensure we had a table. Terrace and indoor is awesome. Super great staff that are here to make your experience worth it! While we were here, they even had a 30th birthday private party on a section of the terrace without sacrificing their space. PLENTY OF SPACE! While the husband had a rye flight and I had wine, their alcohol list is perfection. But of course, come for the whiskey. A Tale of Two Floors: so we started off downstairs and had a 5+ star experience sitting at the bar. The bartenders were amazing, above and beyond knowledgeable and listened to us, made incredible suggestions and just made the experience for all of us. We had a few different bourbons, scotch and rye between the 4 of us before we decided to head upstairs for some dinner and things went downhill quickly. Sat us at a table and then ignored us for a solid 15+ minutes. Finally the manager came over to see if anyone had taken our drink order and apologized when we explained the situation. She was very nice to take our order but then finally a few minutes later the "waiter" shows up with zero clue to how long we'd been waiting because at this point we are at about 30 minutes and only have 4 glasses of water on the table. He seems nice enough and takes our drink order and then we never see him again for the night. Drinks arrive from someone else, another couple people bring out the food. Everything we ate was delicious. I had the deviled eggs to start and the scallops for my main. Both were excellent and everyone else at the table loved their burgers, both the bison and the bacon burger. The problem here was the lack of waiter as a we didn't get more drinks and when we finally asked about the check, it took forever and a day to get it. When you see a customer tapping their credit card on the table it's a pretty good sign that you're ready to roll! Felt weird because we had multiple people clearing our table but just couldn't get that waiter we really needed. Our whole group was generally annoyed with the service and it brought a negative to our overall dining experience. The second floor has more space and a separate smaller cocktail bar in the back on the balcony. Noise level is extremely loud (on a Friday night). People smoke on the second floor, even though it is strictly speaking not a patio or outdoor area (windows were open). The roof (intentional or not) was leaking! We were here on a rainy day. Terrible. So there's a big area right by the staircase where no one can utilize (dripping water), which made the bar even more crowded. read more

I have never been to a whiskey bar and actually dislike whiskey and this place is exactly what I would have expected a whiskey bar to be like (in a good way). The ambiance was very wooden and the bartenders were great and clearly put a lot of care into the drinks. They were able to accommodate a relatively large group at the last minute, which was great of them. We were brought to an outdoor patio area which was small but cozy. The one drink I tried, the Gold Rush ($14.30), was so good and sweet enough that the whiskey went down smoothly. I believe the ingredients included honey, ginger, whiskey, and maybe some herbs? I don't remember but would gladly try it again. My coworkers tried a variety of drinks and the Gold Rush and Mint Julep were ones that everyone seemed to enjoy. My one regret is that I didn't look at the happy hour menu (happy hour drinks are illegal where I'm from so I didn't think to check), which I realized after had many cheaper drink options. We were referred to Jack Rose by the bartender at Dukes Grocery. He was not wrong! The bourbon selection was outstanding - walls and walls of bourbons and scotch's. It was initially really crowded due to an event, so the service was slow and a bit sketchy. As the event ended, the service improved significantly and understandably. The bartenders are extremely knowledgeable and the prices were phenomenal. We were anticipating a several hundred dollar check that was, in reality, a hundred dollar check. This place is amazing best collection of whiskey and bourbon I dare say in the state. Some of the rare items are pricey but they have all price points. The food is amazing as well. Pimento cheese biscuits and bone marrow are excellent. I entrees nothing short of amazing. read more
