I want to start off with saying that I am loyal to Court of Shanghai, but I do think Jack's Fortune is awesome. The service there is really great. You walk in and are greeted by a sweet woman named May. The whole staff is actually just made of cute older Chinese women. One thing that annoys me at restaurants is when they never refill your water. That is never an issue here, they refill your cup every five minutes. The food is great for american Chinese food and let's be honest it's what we all really love. If you go to any Chinese restaurant in Annapolis looking for something authentic you are in for the worst surprise of your life. The food here is never excessively oily and never takes long to make. Easily my new favorite Chinese restaurant in an area surprisingly devoid of fine Chinese cuisine. The honey chicken, crispy beef, and Happy Lamb are all impeccably delicious. Don't let the fact it is in a strip mall deter you from visiting. After Graces Fortune closed in Bowie, I never found another Chinese restaurant that compared - that is until we found Jack's. Menu and decor were very much like Graces and I learned the owner was the former chef at Graces. The Cantonese chicken, Chicken Hunan, Singapore noodles, and chicken with broccoli were all delicious and there was enough to take home for lunch the next day. The service was great and each meal came with a swan made out of vegetables. I highly recommend and plan on making regular visits. read more

Oh my. As others have said, Chinese food in Annapolis? Well not really, but when we crave even the Americanized version this place does not deliver. If you love peanuts and just want to eat peanuts order the Kung Pao Chicken. Then if you want to play with your food try finding any discernible pieces of meat. Chopsticks can come in handy here. Want flavor or heat? Won't find it here. If you are a fan of wilted 3 inch pieces of green onion, and then a couple of handfuls of fresh green onion, order the shredded pork, Peking style. Once again, enjoy playing find Waldo, as you look for any traces of protein. Oh and don't believe the menu about plum sauce. This dish was drenched in Hoisin. Ugh. A little goes a long way with this concoction and does best when it's flavors are used to enhance not drown. My favorite however, was the fried rice. All it was, I kid you not, was rice bathed in soy sauce. Really? And considering this was take-out lunch the bill was close to $17 bucks. I know these places have high sodium levels, but I have NEVER had to drink three bottles of water after eating some nuts and onions. If I'm craving some hum drum mediocre Americanized Chinese I am heading straight for Hunan House. read more

I did not have high expectations but this place was close for takeout. Strictly 2-3 stars. Lo mein and brown rice was way over cooked. The triple delight had no flavor and paltry serving of meat. Folks were very pleasant though. we travel continuously on our boat and never get to the same place twice. One generality is that the quality of Chinese food has deteriorated everywhere. It's not just cutting back on meat and veg quality, the food has less and less taste. May Thai food is the way to go. read more

The service and presentation are unmatched for the price when considering Chinese cuisine in Annapolis. The portion sizes are large enough to share and the traditional dishes are done well. The restaurant excels in more unique entrees and specials. The only drawbacks are spicy dishes are not all that spicy and there is a lot of "sauce" covered dishes that rebrand the same meat and veggies with just the additional toppings to differentiate. Came here for some good soup and when looked at their menu, the KingCrab with Asparagus soup stood out. Finding no info about the soup on prior reviews, I thought to give it a go. Plus we got the Wonton to start. We also ordered the Crispy Duck and Happy Lamb (again, no prior reviews of those dishes). Someone gotta start it right! So the Soup and wonton came out. The serving style is much like Red Lobster where the server brings out a foldable round table where they set the dishes before serving them on the actual table. That was a sweet touch! Before the Soup even hit our table, the potent fishy smell was like a Rocky style punch on the face. I can handle some fish (well, well cooked to the point of crispiness) but my wife likes fish. I took one spoon of soup to my mouth with all the courage I could gather and the taste was just like it smelled. It's not for the faint of the heart. My wife couldn't even taste it due to the potent smell and she eats fish. I called the gentleman who was serving us and asked to take it away and let him know it was too intense for us. He apologized and took the soup away. The Wonton on the other hand was good, I was expecting the crunchy wontons but Jack does it differently and I liked the idea. The Crispy Duck was not crispy at all. I was hoping (from reading the description) that it would be more like the one they do at Saigon Palace. We couldn't dig the duck at all. The Duck would have tasted way better if it was left in the oven for another half hour in broil mode. The Happy Lamb was OK. We were rather dissapointed with the taste of the food. Jack's did not charge us for the soup that we couldn't consume (ok, one spoon consumed) and Thank you Jack for that, Thumbs Up! Most of the restaurants don't do that anymore sadly. Clearly Jack went to business school and knows how to get repeat customer. The staffs are amazing and super polite. The 3 stars are only for the service. I wish and wanted to give some stars for the food, but it was not up to par. Also they decorate the entree dishes with veg resembling birds and ducks which is also a nice touch in the presentation. However, the taste does not live up to it and maybe instead of spending the decoration time of the plate with fancy food art, use the energy to make the food taste good. For service they got 5/5, for taste of the food its 1/5. read more

Not only the best Chinese in Annapolis but one of the best, most authentic Chinese places in the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area. My wife and I lived in Beijing for a year and Taipei for two years and we love Jack's Fortune. The waitstaff are all from China and the food, although "American Chinese" in style, is superbly executed and the white tablecloth ambiance makes this a great date spot. read more

Many local old-timers love this place, as did I for many years. Of late the food has been just ho-hum, but convenience kept us occasionally coming back. So we recently opted for carryout during a holiday rush, ordering pretty much the basics: Gen Tso and sides. The egg roll and sides were okay. The Gen Tso was tasteless and they barely included any sauce. We had to salvage our meal with a small bowl of microwaved Trader Joe's Gen Tso sauce from our pantry - pathetic considering that Jack's Fortune is also the most expensive non-chain Asian eatery in Annapolis. We've had similar experiences with other menu items there recently. On the upside, the owners are nice folks and the dine-in atmosphere is above average, but I suspect they are more or less just riding on customer loyalty and neighborhood convenience, and not on food quality. Again, lots of Annapolis oldsters still rave about this restaurant. Sorry, but I am over Jack's Fortune, at least for carryout. Would rather go a little out of my way to House of Hunan, P.F. Been to Jack's a few times now, so I figured they deserve a review. The service is great for dine in and for take-out. I love the customer service, every one is so polite and friendly. The food is usually great. I love the Shrimp and Chicken in brown sauce, the lo mein is okay. Only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 is because they don't offer their lunch specials or even combination plates on the weekend. It sucks but it won't stop me from going there. read more

This place is a real find! Excellent customer service! Water glasses were kept filled, service was attentive without hovering. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with expensive, not cheap, furnishings. And the food - wonderful! Husband ordered chicken curry - delicious and made without too-sweet coconut. I had Kung Pao Chicken - full of peanuts and sliced (not chunky) chicken. We each brought half of it home and look forward to having again today for lunch. I really love the food here, and I think that it is one of the best Chinese in town. I also love the atmosphere when dining in. There customer service however is pretty horrible hence my 3 star review. They do not make any accommodations for you and look at you like you have 5 heads when you ask for a children's menu. I am pretty disappointed that we had to pay 15 dollars for an already over priced order of general tso's so that my 3 year daughter could have a meal. This lovely little family owned restaurant has the best Chinese food in Annapolis-period. They blow PF Changs out of the water. Their sauces are so superior they are not even in the same league... I have read the reviews that talk about too much bland sauce. Here's the skinny: Jack's is run by an amazing family that is totally committed to awesome food done YOUR way. If you don't like a lot of sauce, just tell them. If you like your food spicy, tell them. If you want something authentic that is not on the menu, tell them. They will accommodate you in any way they possibly can and you will be surprised with what they can do... And as to the vegetables being frozen, there is just no way....I can not abide frozen vegetables and I can spot fresh broccoli any time--their's is the real thing and they give you so much it is enough for 3 meals. And I go there so often I have seen them on many a morning sorting fresh vegetables on the tables. There have also been some negative reviewers say that this is a place just for old people. Let me just say( as an old person) that good food does not have an age group--or at least it shouldn't. Yes, they are situated near 3 retirement homes and do have quite a large clientele from those places, but young people would be wise to see what all of the popularity is about. And as for my (old) sensibilities, I would far rather have my meals in the relaxing soft sounds of their classical CDs than to the pumping, loud, obnoxious music played at so many of the restaurants trying to appeal to the younger crowd. I went to Jack's for dinner the night after Thanksgiving. It was absolutely packed, but our food came quickly and our waiters kept our water glasses and tea cups full. Like so many restaurants in Annapolis, this one looks pretty bland on the outside, but surprisingly nice and classy on the inside. Situated in an unassuming corner of a strip mall anchored by a Giant supermarket and flanked by a lonely Mexican restaurant with zero customers, this gem of Chinese cuisine is about as good as they come. The only Chinese restaurant I've eaten at in this area that was better was a dim sum place in Wheaton. This one is simply superb -- I've read it is the best Chinese restaurant in Annapolis, and I believe it! Great menu, great service, great ambiance, and unbelievably reasonable prices. I've been to Hong Kong and China, Jacks is every bit as good or better then the places I visited. Not on the menu? Ask. More times than not they can make it. Jack's special fish is Devine as is the crispy chicken or beef. I've been eating there for 4+ years and it's great. If you can be there on Chinese New Year, do it. I ran into a couple in western Maryland last year that wanted to quiz me when they found out that I was from the Annapolis area. Jack's Fortune is one of the best restaurants in Annapolis. The people are wonderful and services fantastic. We have been there so many times that we consider them family as they do us! Their food is always freshly prepared, and the crispy eggplant is absolutely to die for although it is way too much food to eat at one time. It is our go to place any time we want some comfort food. As far as Chinese restaurants in Annapolis and many places we have been, it is absolutely the best. It is not expensive - - reasonably priced and attractively prepared. I realize you can't please everyone, but really now we have eaten here so many times and have never been disappointed. Food was very bland, no real flavor. I ordered the Cantonese hot pot, and it had ammoniated scallops (a whole two of them) and absolutely no flavor. I've had baby food with better flavor. The fried rice wasn't really fried rice, it was rice with soy sauce added. My bf got crispy beef, which was far from crispy. I don't know how long this place has been around, but I wanted to try someplace new, and I can say, we won't be back. $50 in our takeout order and I can say it was not worth $20 of it. Sad to say, but there's no good Chinese food in Annapolis. Jack's Fortune is no exception. Like many other reviewers have said, there was no flavor to the food! I got the kung pao chicken, which LOOKED great! It's just chicken, scallions, peanuts, and dried chilis, so I thought that was a good sign that it wasn't a bunch of mixed veggies. No, not good! I don't know how a dish covered in such a dark sauce can be so flavorless, but that's what it is! It wasn't salty, wasn't sweet, wasn't spicy, and the sauce was watery and half an inch deep in the carry out container.
