Sammy's is always consistently good unlike many other halal carts. They offer chicken, lamb, mix, or falafel over rice. You have a choice of getting pita or salad. I don't particularly like either the pita or salad but would choose the salad over the pita. Service: The staff are friendly and pleasant. Ambiance: This is a halal cart with no seating. Although the price of the chicken over rice is crazy, I can't say too much about that because halalflation has spread everywhere. I personally really love Sammy's gyro. The seasoning for the chicken is just so good--it's so flavorful! I have never had an issue with my gyro having too little chicken, I feel they have always given me a good amount of everything. If I ask for more sauce, they give me more. If I ask for less sauce, they give me less. I always get hot sauce and white sauce on my chicken over rice, and I can say for sure that the sauces at Sammy's is very very good! Do be aware that there is no seating at this cart, so if you are looking to sit and eat, you'll have to find a nearby bench. I've had Sammy's Halal Cart multiple times, but the recent gyro I tried was a real disappointment. My sister and I couldn't even finish it, which is saying something. The taste was just bizarre - bland and unremarkable, like they forgot to season it. The onions tasted like they'd been forgotten in the fridge next to the wilted lettuce. We joked that the meat might have not been chicken. To top it off, the gyro left an odd lingering smell that was less "mouthwatering" and more "mystery meat gone wrong." It's clear that the quality has definitely gone down. Sadly, this visit didn't live up to the high standards I've come to expect from Sammy's. This is my first time trying the NYC popular "over rice" street food. I was going to be in Queens for the day so I wanted I wanted to make sure I picked the right place. Sammy's was the lucky one this time. Like any street food, it's cheap, quick and very filling. I will admit though, I was already kind of full from eating pizza and a bagel in other places so I by the time I visited Sammy's, I really didn't want to eat anymore. I tried to get a few fresh bites in, and damn was it tasty. I ended up ordering their combo over rice. Which I honestly regretted. The chicken had so much flavor, and the lamb was just gyro meat, which I do enjoy eating, just didn't want to eat it with the rest of the dish. The chicken alone wouldn't have made this dish perfect. The white and red sauce also added so much flavor to this dish; and you get plenty of rice. I read that the red sauce was spicy, but it didn't have any beat whatsoever. The lettuce at the bottom kind of threw me off at first but didn't end enjoying it at the end. Overall a really good dish and now will definitely want to try some more when in the city. Had this review been from 10+ years ago, Sammy's would have been an easy 5 star review. At the height of their success, they were a Vendy award winning cart and one of the most underrated Halal options in all of NYC. Fast forward to the most recent iteration and my experiences have been a little less stellar than before. The mixed combo (lamb + chicken over rice) was always my go-to, but the chicken lately has been dry and the same goes for the lamb. Moreover, much of the platters have been a tinge bland. While the chunky onions in the lamb were never my favorite, I always loved their basmati rice and a thumbs up on their white sauce. Inflation hasn't been kind either, as prices for most platters have close to doubled since then. Things seem to be good for the brand, as they still have active carts in the West and East Village. I have maintained that this OG cart was always better than anything in the city, but suddenly now I'm not so sure. I've been bringing friends here for tours / food crawls in the neighborhood and hope to continue to do so, but I'm really hoping they can recapture the magic from yesteryear sooner than later. read more

Had to leave bad review. There's this guy at the cart today, Sunday 5/11/25 around 5pm who didn't seem to listen well. He put so much sauce on our orders despite being told to put a little bit. For the falafel platter, the falafel is crushed. I've been going to you for years but I think I won't go back. Please train your staff well & listen before putting sauce randomly. My husband and I have been coming here for 12 years now. In terms of ambience, there is no seating and when you walk up to the cart there is usually a person or two but it moves quickly. The food is amazing. The service is good and the portions are good. We have ordered a combo over salad over the years and a combo over rice. The lamb is very well seasoned, cubed finely and soft. The chicken is shredded, tender and very flavorful. It has a good balance of spicy and acidity. The rice is your staple delicious fluffy basmati with a touch of cinnamon flavor. Been going there for years, Didn't go there for a while I figured I get some , I get there the light skin guy on the left with the accent starts staring at me funny lol asks me what I want I got the lamb over rice with pita. He tells me the price and expects me to pay first. Gives me a dirty look. Like I'm gonna run away with the food. Ok so I pay him. Somebody comes after me orders 2 combos and he gets his first and he gets a free soda. Maybe because it's his "fellow countrymen" calling him bro like he knew him but actually didn't. Totally more than 5-Star worthy! Sammy's is the perfect combination of savory and spice. I'm only here in NY for a couple days and heard about Sammy's- specifically their amazing sauces- on several YouTube foodie channels and other reviews I read. I knew it would have to be one of the first stops I made. My husband and I arrived around 7:30pm on a Sunday evening. There were about 3 people in front of us. We waited only 5-10 min to place our order. The guys were really friendly and worked quickly to get our food ready. We found a seat on the edge of a nearby planter to eat. No need to add sauces, Sammy's puts them on for you. That combination of the red, white and green sauces was addicting! So so good! The chicken and rice was abundant and flavorful. The little bit of salad was needed spice relief and welcomed for me but if you don't want it, ask them to leave it out. Sammy's has canned sodas and bottled water offered to go with your meal too. Sammy's Halal is my guilty pleasure. 9 out of 10 times I get it after a long night of hydrating or I'm still hungry after an omakase and it just hits the spot. I have been coming here for years and there isn't any competition around. This is literally and figuratively. Their quality has gone down over the years but they are still holding it down outside of the city. Sammy still hits regardless of what everyone saids! I know the onions being in the lamb is controversial but i think it makes it delicious. Definitely a nice touch. Eh this place is okay . It wouldnt be my top choice of halal food to be honest. I think there are better halal carts in Queens especially at Astoria. The chicken and lamb are kinda overseasoned and the rice is basic and it is just plain and the white sauce and the hot sauce really overpowers the taste of the whole meal. Sammy's Halal cart is a pretty good cart in the Jackson Heights, Queens area. Their chicken & rice plate is pretty satisfying after a night out on the town. Their chicken is chunked chicken. White sauce is great. Bf gets their red sauce, and their green sauce. Definitely not a healthy meal. Sometimes, it's a bit greasy and a bit too salty depending on the day/night. FYI - the cart immediately to the right of Sammy's Halal Cart (when you're facing Sammy) is also Sammy's. It used to be Khan's Halal Cart but Sammy's bought them over... and I believe took Khan's rice recipe. I was a regular customer of Khan's before it got sold to Sammy's. Since I don't live in the city, this is the next best thing compared to the 53rd St halal guys. Definitely the best in Queens. Don't get me wrong, the two vendors of chicken and rice is very different. But my preference is still the 53rd St guys. Sammy's is very tasty and for $6 bucks you can get chicken and rice plus soda. I have tried the combo from Sammy halal cart a few times. The combo cost $7 ( which is $1 more than the halal carts in the area). The price is $6 for chicken or lamb or rice. The food is okay but not as great as the other halal cart in the area. The lamb is always over cooked or burnt. The chicken is very plain. The rice is okay but usually cold. I was in the area and knew this was my chance to see what Sammy's is all about! It was a rainy day so when I approached the cart, there was no wait at all. I ordered the combination platter which was chicken, lamb/beef, rice, and salad. I must say the rice was amazing! It reminded me a lot of Afghan rice and is by far the BEST rice I've eaten from ANY cart in NYC. The chicken and lamb were delicious, as well. The chicken was what you'd find anywhere else honestly, but the beef/lamb cubes were seasoned and tender. The salad brought some freshness to this platter. For some reason I really wanted some street food and made a quick stop off the No.7 train to grab a bite from Sammy's Halal Food after seeing many positive yelp reviews. I arrived around 3:25PM and even at this odd of a time (between lunch and dinner), there were four customers ahead of me. There were also two cooks preparing the food, so clearly business for this cart is pretty good. I selected the Lamb & Rice with both green and white sauce, and the smell of the grilled meat, rice, and their various spices was very enticing and made the short wait seem longer. For $7 the portion was sizable, but the meat-to-rice ratio was clearly skewed to the rice (probably due it being the less expensive ingredient). The rice was a long-grain Basmati-like rice cooked to a nice al-dente bite. I enjoyed the seasoning used for the rice as I tasted cumin, a hint of clove, and maybe some cinnamon and coriander. Its flavor was quite reminiscent of the wonderfully fragrant (albeit to a much lesser extent) Afghan Kabuli Pulao. The lamb were strips akin to gyro meat, and was pretty much equal in quality and flavor to most every food cart. Nothing special here. The white sauce was okay, albeit a bit too mayonnaise-like, and needed something to cut its monotone flavor. I would have loved to see some mint added in too give it some contrast. However, the green sauce was interesting as it had some decent flavor from cilantro (and maybe some of that mint I was looking for) and a bit of heat. Overall not the best version of what has become a staple NYC food cart dish, but still pretty tasty, filling, and inexpensive. read more

It saddens me to write this. It's just not the same anymore. It's been years since I've come here and still remember what the king of halal used to be like. They were the best spot for a while and I don't know what happened because they are not even remotely close to how they used to be. Judging by the reviews lately, I know I'm not the only one that feels this way. They either fell off really hard, or new owners, new recipes, who the hell knows...but I do know its not the Sammy's I used to love. The easiest way to describe it....it's watered down. The old Sammy's use to not be afraid of holding back on the spices and flavors. Hitting all the flavor profiles that left you confused in a good way that you just kept wanting more. This recent endeavor was subpar and truly disappointing. I'll give it one more shot just in case it was really that off that night, but to be that off, it doesn't make sense.
