I have had an incredible experience singing with the Jacksonville Children's Chorus; this chorus…read morehas helped me to grow not only as a musician, but also as a person. Singing in this chorus has inspired me to pursue music not simply as a casual hobby, but as a lifelong passion. During my years in the chorus I have learned more about music theory and breath control, sung in all parts of my vocal range, gained experience in sightreading and performing a wide variety of choral music, and have seen great improvements in the overall quality of my singing voice. Additionally, I have met some amazing people through the chorus, who come from schools all over Jacksonville to make music together. The children in the chorus are focused and committed, but they also know how to loosen up and have plenty of fun when they aren't rehearsing! Being in this chorus has inspired me to travel abroad more often; we have taken tours to places including Alaska, New York City, Canada, Italy, and Greece. I have had a number of once-in-a-lifetime experiences with the chorus as well, such as performing in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, accompanying the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, and doing concerts with well-known artists such as The Voca People and Amy Grant. Overall, my experience with the Jacksonville Children's Chorus has been an unforgettable one.

It can take about 20 minutes just to exit this parking lot. Also, there aren't any portable toilets here. So, it is highly recommended that you go before an event. Also, this video is from 2018 when "Welcome to Rockville" used to be held in Jacksonville. It is now held at Daytona Beach because it can accommodate more individuals that Jacksonville can. The future of the event parking lot is up in the air for the time being.

When I spoke to the director a few weeks ago, he told me they served over 2.5 million children since they started in 1979. They see close to 45,000 students every season. You feel as if you're about to be whisked away on a grand adventure with the wind through your hair as you stand upon the tall ship! "Starry Nights" with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra is one of the most unique events Jacksonville puts on. Picnics are one of my FAVORITE activities and when it's paired with an concert under a navy sky of stars---you have a winning combination guaranteed to cement a special memory. My first Starry Nights concert was in 2003. The Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra played crowd favorites such as Rhapsody in Blue, The Harry Potter theme, Star Wars, and ended the concert with an explosive finale! Fireworks accompanied the 1812 Overture and it was a glorious sight! While the concert used to be free to attend when it was sponsored by Winn-Dixie, this year it was still quite affordable at $15 for lawn seating. Private tables closer to the stage start around $250. While picnic baskets were encouraged, there were also food trucks as well as a gourmet basket you could pre-order from Biscotti's to pick up at the park. No outside alcohol was allowed but wine by the glass or the bottle was for sale as well as ample choices of canned beer from both Intuition Ale Works and Bold City Brewery. While Starry Nights is a great experience, it's not a guaranteed one *every year.* This is the first concert since 2010. There was a hiatus in Starry Nights when the partnership between Winn-Dixie and Starry Nights ended. It began again in 2010 with Idina Menzel of the "Frozen" fame. The Tony award winner wowed audiences with her goose bump inciting performance of "Defying Gravity" from the Broadway hit Wicked. While her voice was heavenly it was quite obvious to EVERYONE in attendance that she was quite intoxicated and there were quite a lot of awkward anecdotes as she rambled inappropriate personal stories between songs. In 2011 The Four Tops were set to front line Starry Nights, but unfortunately the show was canceled due to low ticket sales. We haven't had a concert since 2010 with Styx and Idina Menzel until THIS year with two separate concerts. Last Saturday, Chicago rocked out and had many songs to choose from their 36 albums! The crowd went especially wild at their last song, "25 or 6 to 4." In all the years I've gone to Starry Nights I've NEVER seen the outdoor lawn so PACKED with eager fans! Everyone was on their feet and cheering for the famous "rock band with a horn section." There is still ONE more chance to see Starry Night this year! Christopher Cross will be playing alongside the JSO this coming Friday. Grab your picnic blanket and GO!

I've got three kids (10, 8, and 6) who have been playing soccer since they could walk. After…read morebouncing through a few leagues over the years, JFC has been the one that actually stuck. We're going on our third year now. JFC has a bunch of programs: Rec, Bridge, Academy, Competitive. Rec League: We've had the same volunteer coaches for three years. They've all been great. No yelling, no "my kid is going to the MLS at age 9" energy. Just good people teaching kids how to play and have fun. My kids have gotten a lot better and more importantly, they actually enjoy playing. Rec uniforms aren't on any kind of cycle. You buy it once and your kid wears it until it doesn't fit anymore. Love that. Bridge Program: If your kid wants more than Rec but competitive sounds intense, Bridge is that perfect middle step. More structure, more skills, but still fun, and build confidence without getting overwhelmed. Competitive Program: My youngest is 6 and plays Competitive. The coaches are paid and trained. They've been really good with him. He's learning a ton and still comes off the field smiling, which is all I care about at this age. Uniforms (Bridge & Competitive): Those do run on a two-year cycle. They're not cheap (We Got Soccer never is), but at least you know you're good for two years. I won't sugarcoat it none of this is cheap, especially with three kids. A sibling discount would be amazing if they ever offer one. Facilities: Patton Park has good fields, one stadium field with lights, several full-size lit fields, and smaller ones. Grass is usually in great shape. Parking is a nightmare (just being honest), bathrooms are okay, and the concession stand has saved us more than once on long soccer weekends. My kids love it. The coaches have been great. The community is solid. And out of every soccer league we've tried in Jacksonville, JFC has been the one where my kids grew the most and actually had fun doing it, and that's what matters.

The club offers several programs, some being recreational, academy, and competitive. It's a lot to navigate. On the REC side, the coaches are volunteers. We've been lucky with the volunteer coaches we gotten (and kept for the last 3 years), they've been knowledgeable, professional, and kind (not one has yelled at the kids or been disrespectfully competitive). They've kept the game fun and competitive for the kids. I've seen a lot of growth in my kids abilities and confidence. It's an added bonus that the parents are chill too. The competitive program has paid, trained coaches. I have one kid who does competitive. No complaints. The coach was good. My kid (6y) learned soccer skills and most importantly, had fun. Yes, it's expensive. A sibling discount (any discount) would be helpful if offered. Uniforms are purchased through We Got Soccer, also pricey, but unlike other leagues, JFC doesn't force you into buying new ones every year. My kids have worn the same uniforms for three years and they've held up great. The club offers a free training session for kids that also serve as informational sessions for the parents. They're essentially informational where you can talk with staff, ask questions, and learn how the programs work while the kids play. The facilities at Patton Park are solid: one lit full-size stadium field, multiple lit full-size fields, and a few unlit junior fields. The grass is usually in good shape and the environment feels professional. Parking is a beast, even with a huge lot! The bathrooms are... meh. Could definitely be better. And the on-site food concession is a nice bonus during long game days. Overall, JFC delivers good coaching and solid competition (especially if your kids want to go all the way aka college).
