My wife and I went to Jacques for lunch on Valentines Day. The waiter opened up the larger room with us as the first diners. Previously they had been crowding into the smaller bar area. I've been back to Jacques on numerous occasions and I have never been disappointed. The food here is nothing but perfect. The highlight of any trip to Jacques continues to be the moules-frites. They have several varieties and I've been happy with them all. (Dijonnaise style is my definite favorite). I've been to Paris and had moules-frites on more than one occasion there --- Jacques's are better! I swear! (Yes, I know this is a Belgium style brasserie, but I'm just saying) Beyond the moules-frites, everything else has been wonderful. I love the steak tartare, the croque monsieur and madame, etc... Although I haven't gotten through the entire menu yet, I'd be shocked to find something that suddenly did not live up to the expectation of everything which has come before it. This is a great little French restaurant on the Upper East side in the neighborhood. From the moment I walked into the place, it reminded me of places that I ate in Paris. The atmosphere is ok, better when you're with friends and food company. I tend to come alone with a book and eat with the blue cheese salad to begin, then the Steak Frite with a nice red wine to pair it with. I love that it comes with bearnaise sauce which is wonderful, and they have some good desserts. I like the crime brûlée the most. The typical service is ok, better on some nights than others. The typical people here tend to be older, grumpy and love to complain...I listen to their comments and demands while shaking my head. The , the others are people from the neighborhood typically. My favorite waiter left, and some of the times lately that I've dropped in, the food has been meh... but the wine is always good. read more

6/25/20 EDIT: I decided to give Jacques another try, and I'm glad I did. All the previous issues I had with the food and packaging were fixed this time around. The steak was a perfect medium rare, the sauce was excellent, and the frites were perfectly crispy. It was well worth the money for a quality product delivered this time. Original: I ordered online and I was thoroughly disappointed. I have had nothing but good experiences eating here in person. However, given the current circumstances, I was forced to settle for delivery, and it was unacceptable. For paying the amount of money that I paid for this steak frites, with accompanying dessert ($58+), I'd expect more care to be put into the packaging. The steak itself was excellent, a solid medium (although I ordered medium rare, the steak was still very good all things considered), but that was almost where the good ended. The fries were still crispy, hence the two stars vs one star. Even still, there were pats of butter just tossed on top of the hot packages, melting butter ALL OVER all components of my meal, thus making it impossible to unpack without getting melted butter all over my countertop. Also, the vanilla ice cream was packaged right next to a piping hot chocolate soufflé (really just a standard fine dining chocolate lava cake), which reduced it to an inedible soup that sloshed its way all over the entire dessert portion of the meal. 1 star for a solid steak and 1 star for crispy fries, but all in all NOT worth the money for such careless packaging, small portions, and general lack of flair. I expected better out of a place that does so well in house, as well as a place that charges a premium for its quality. read more

7/18/21: Ordered the "Chardonnay Mussels". Mussels themselves deliciously seasoned and for July nice perfect size; however, the mussel sauce was absolutely HORRIBLY GREASY. What a wonderful experience today!!! The food was exquisite!! I had the Salad Verte with salmon and the waiter asked how I would like my salmon. I have never been asked that even when it is a main entree, I could get rare, medium rare.,..etc salmon?! Very nice. It was delicious. Fresh salmon on baby arugula and the dressing was light and wonderful. Some hot bread to go with it. The wait staff was very obliging and worked as a team to make sure my friend and I had a great experience. She had the burger and said it was also exquisite. I wondered why she would have a burger in a French Restaurant. She was familiar with the restaurant which is there for 25 years and said their burgers were amazing and wow, was it amazing!! When we walked in to this lovely French Brasserie, after a lovely day at the museums, we were transported to France! The service was great and everyone was welcoming. The ambiance is very comfortable and welcoming. We were a large party and we shared lots of appetizers. All of the food was delicious and the drinks we had were delicious. I had one of the best Cosmopolitans ever. We had the pate de campagne and oyters and Frisee Lardon to start along with mussels!! It was truly some of the best food I have had, especailly the oyster and the pate. The Mussels were very good, but not as good as the other appetizers. They were exquisite! Then most had some version of steak frites The steak was perfectly cooked and the fries were very good and the Au Poivre Sauce as well as the Bearnaise sauce were out of this world!. My first visit was lunch today. The lentil soup of the day was wonderful! The service was efficient and the surroundings are lovely.

Awful experience. Went there last night. The 4 of us had appetizers, 8 drinks, entrees and sides. Been there before. Had the trout. Ordered it again, knowing it's only maybe 4 oz of meat. About 1/4 was hard and tasteless and the rest was way over cooked. The waiter substituted for a $12 cheaper tuna appetizer. When we got the bill, both meals were on it. The waiter said it was the manager Omar's decision to charge us for the meal I returned uneaten. After complaining, Omar said he would take a meal off. I assumed it would be the one I didn't eat. We left a $60 tip. When I got home I realized he only credited me for the less expensive meal. I called him and he was not happy with me. He said he told me it would be for the tuna (appetizer). In all fairness, he might have said that, but I was thinking it would be for the meal I never ate. So today I notice he reversed the lesser credit completely. In other word, we were back to him charging me for both meals Ugg I stopped by today to explain my position to Omar. I thought it was common practice if you don't like your meal and don't eat it, that you don't have to pay. Well, obviously not at Jacques. I will not be back. There are plenty of other options in the area. I don't need to go to a place that tries to sneak in a charge on a returned item and then reverses a credit that was not the proper credit to begin with. read more

Food was pretty good. I liked the Shakshouka I ordered, and my friend's dishes looked delicious as well. We all thought our respective dishes were a little under seasoned but that's more personal preference than anything else. Two stars deducted because service was SLOW. The restaurant was not busy, but the waiter forgot both me and my friends' drink order multiple times. It also took forever to get someone's attention to order - we must have waited over 20 minutes before being greeted by a waiter. Food took a while to come too (not that this is a bad thing). I don't like being harsh, but this place could be something really special if the service improved. read more

After reading the reviews we were hesitant to try the restaurant but we decided to go after receiving recommendations from friends. We loved the French onion soup. The lamb sausages were spicy but delicious, coffee was fresh and hot and the wait staff were quick to offer refills. It is a bit pricey, but the service was great and the meals we ordered were all delicious. We will be going back to try their mussels next time. read more

And when you ask for liquor on the rocks, it seems they pour a standard drink, but then fill the glass to the top with ice cubes. The ice was way higher than the alcohol. And they did this twice. Conveniently located for a lunch break while visiting the Museum Mile, Jacques Brasserie is a reliable stop with predictable French standards (think Croque Monsieur, Eggs Benedict, Salade Nicoise) competently prepared and attractively presented. Prices at lunchtime top out at $33 (aforementioned Nicoise) but are generally in the 18-25$ range. The wine list is well curated and well priced; a request by varietal was met with a decent pour of a modestly priced bottle. I recommend it without reservation (oh yes, they are usually able to seat walk-in's promptly, at lunch at least). The waitstaff are gracious and professional. read more

Come for the live music on Saturday. That band was very good. It's a nice decor and atmosphere but the staff could use some training. I saw the host drinking at the bar while we and some other customers were still there; he was cute but you're not supposed to do that on the clock. We also had a waiter who was snotty to the friend who invited me (who knows someone else who's gotten lots of customers for them over many years) & then vanished. My friends also were not satisfied with the food while mine was actually pretty good. It's hard to screw up an Angus beef burger (which to my surprise came with a salad and fries that I shared with my friends). To my knowledge, drinks were not an issue. I stuck to tap water. It was pricey for my blood, which didn't come as a total shock to me considering this is the UES but the burger was definitely awesome. If invited again, I'd likely go. read more

My family has been coming here for over 20 years. The dining room is evocative of classic Parisian bistros, with banquettes and mirrors. The food is classic French, from mussels, to steak frites, and excellent fish. Their soupe a l'oignon is consistently rich with flavor, and excellent cheese topping. Their country pate and foie gras are delicious, as well as coq au vin, boeuf bourguinon, and salmon with ratatouille. My only critique would be to add more classics, so hard to find these days: celerie remoulade, mushrooms a la greque, sweetbreads, rognons de veau au moustarde, skate with lemon caper sauce, sole meuniere (or amandine). These are dishes from past favorites, mostly closed. And for the winter holidays: venison with chestnut puree, beef Wellington, buche de Noel, duck a l'orange (or cherry or cranberry), quenelles sauce Nantua, all live on in my memory! But I'll be back anyway. read more

On past visits, I had the sense that they had been resting on their laurels.
