So I was in the mood for some authentic Chinese and thought I'd check this place out again. The interior is nicer and more updated than it was back then but the food has fallen off dramatically. Me and my very hungry family of 4 ordered 6 dishes and each one fell well below my expectations. 1. Young chow fried rice: The rice and egg were seasoned well but the meat wasn't. My 9 year old even commented that the shrimp in it tasted like nothing. Overall probably the best dish we ordered flavor wise. The portion size is much smaller than before though but I chalk that up to every business basically giving you less for more nowadays. 2. String beans: A decent dish although it wasn't evenly seasoned. Some bean stalks were incredibly salty while others were perfect. It lacked the usual sauce that other Chinese restaurants usually pour onto the plate so they were pretty dry as well. Again the portion size was lacking to say the least. 3. Beef chow fun: Go to any Chinese restaurant in a Chinatown in a city and they all look basically the same dark brown color with large tender slices of beef. Here: light brown bordering on just slightly tan, under seasoned with small chewy or tough pieces of beef. They did add a bunch of mixed vegetables into it, which I appreciated but again, it lacked any flavor. The portion size for this was at least acceptable but definitely not to the size standards I'm used to from any Chinatown. 4. Sweet and sour pork: Originally I wanted the Peking pork chops which they used to make before COVID. I thought this would be an acceptable substitute, but I was very wrong. There was no crisp to the supposedly fried pork and although the sauce can soften the pork to a degree, that certainly was not the case here. It was either pre-made or re-heated and came out just kind of soft and soggy. The sauce was reminiscent of the kind of sauce you get at takeout Chinese or at those AYCE Chinese buffets. The portion size was good but nobody wanted to finish it. 5. Pork soup dumplings: This place used to have some of the best soup dumplings around. It is shocking how far down the quality has gone down on these. Although edible and more than enough to satiate my kids cravings, they are a far cry from what they were and what could be had from other restaurants in the vicinity. 6. Prawns w/walnuts: Without a doubt the worst dish of the meal. We were expecting the typical fried shrimp with walnuts with mayo sauce that we gotten here plenty of times pre-COVID. Now the shrimp looks like a typical battered shrimp technique similar to what you'd see at those kids stations at AYCE Chinese buffets and not the highly technical dish you'd find at any authentic Chinese restaurant. The sauce was also some sticky, drippy, yellow concoction and not the typical mayo based thick, white sauce. The broccoli garnish also tasted old, not cleaned properly, and bordering on raw when it is normally steamed and softened. It was so bad we barely touched it and had to tell the waitress about our disappointment in it. The thing that upsets me the most is the deception. All the most recent reviews on Yelp hyped this place up. The restaurant portrays itself as an authentic Chinese restaurant. Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes, but this place is a Chinese takeout restaurant masquerading as a authentic Chinese restaurant. Honestly Chinese takeout would have been better than this place. Hopefully they can get their act together and improve the food before the real truth gets out.
