A great spot for takeout! It seems like dining in is not an option at the moment. I ordered my food and it was ready in 10-15 minutes. I love how it's a family-run business with the parents working in the back and the kids helping out in front. That's always a warm feeling. 75% of the food was great. However, my husband had the pork and dried tofu dish and got food poisoning overnight. He was the only one who ordered and ate pork. Awesome takeout today. Shrimp fried rice was rocking. The shrimp was fresh and large. The fried rice has a lot of shrimp and the taste was one of the better versions of this dish I've had. I also ordered shrimp egg foo young. It was good but the gravy was a little different. I prefer the traditional brown gravy. All in all delicious meal. read more

This was my first time eating food from Jade Palace. I had it delivered. Preparation was fast. I ordered sesame chicken and white rice. The rice was cold. Not warm, but cold. What happened here? I enjoyed this restaurant for years but hadn't been back since the pandemic and did not know there had been a fire in 2020. Is it managed by different people? I wasn't keen on the takeout only deal but went with it anyway because I remember this place being so good it would be worth forfeiting the dine-in experience. I was craving the Kung Pao Tofu and the crispy sesame eggplant dish I used to enjoy there, and ordered one of each, planning ahead for lunch to take to work the next day. The "Kung Pao" was tofu and zucchini in a ubiquitous brown sauce. No peanuts. No celery. No hot pepper. The tofu was soggy. The eggplant was supposed to be cubed and fried crispy; what I got was soggy, slimy large chunks of Japanese eggplant that had not been breaded and fried. It was supposed to be in a sesame sauce; it was also in some generic brown sauce with only a tiny sprinkle of maybe 20 sesame seeds on top. I was able to salvage a small bit of the soggy tofu in brown sauce but the eggplant was inedible. Disappointed doesn't even begin to cover it. I have no idea what happened here but I'm wondering if this place is now under new *management* that kept the old menu without the benefit of learning how to prepare the recipes. Don't do it, reader. They have some pretty authentic Chinese dishes as well as American take out classics. I've long been hooked on the red pepper chicken, spicy crunchy fatty amazingness. It's fast, it's consistently good, prices are reasonable. We've consistently had a great experience. read more

I've ordered take out from Jade Palace several times and they never disappoint. Their dishes are cheap for the amount you get and are delicious! My personal favorite dishes I've tried are the Twice Cooked Pork (which has fatty pork and lots of veggies/zucchini) for $9 and the Pork Pad Thai. I also love the garlic eggplant ($8.50) and any of their noodle dishes including chow fun, lomein, etc. For the price range of $8-$11, it's A LOT of food and excellent flavors. Their menu is extensive and their delivery fee is flat. Their service is also friendly and fast service. One minor and small issue I have is that the food is very oily, which I think is expected at most takeout Chinese places. As someone who is Chinese I am always hypercritical of Chinese take out or restaurants and I must say Jade Palace has impressed me. read more

Hot and sour soup was thin and didn't have a lot of flavor The kung pao lotus root was good, I liked the crunch of the lotus root, but when you ask for really spicy - it was barely spicy. The chicken in black bean sauce was okay - flavor was muted. There was an obvious flavor of the cornstarch with the velveted chicken. Again, when you ask for really spice - it was barely spicy. Sweet and sour chicken was okay - how can you go wrong with fried chicken? Well, the chicken was cooked well, but the coating was just a little underdone. The terriyaki chicken, was okay The Hawaii 5-0 was okay, nothing to write about. A typical chinese stir-fry dish. Its not bad. If you're craving chinese food, its convenient and you can order online. But for flavor and spice, I'll probably be taking a trip and heading to other places in Cary and Morisville. read more

How in the world did I not find this place sooner? And the answer is simple, I wasn't at all impressed by the number of reviews (73), or the overall 3 star rating, especially when contrasted with the 4 star rating, driven by 186 reviews, for one of my very favorite Chinese restaurants, Gourmet Kingdom, only a short distance away. But, recently I looked at the reviews in detail, and came away with the impression that there was more here that was in tune with our tastes than the summarized rating might suggest. The restaurant, which opened in 1982, has always been in this location, and was the first Chinese restaurant in Carrboro, one of the few at that time in the entire Chapel Hill area. Over the years the place has obviously changed, added delivery early on (and still does a large delivery business), and the menu has changed, as has the ownership - the current owners bought the restaurant in 2011 or so. As noted in other reviews, there are 2 sections of the menu - the majority is taken up by Americanized Chinese choices (Beef & Broccoli, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Lo Mein, etc), and a smaller section offering more traditional Chinese dishes, with an emphasis on Szechuan influenced dishes (including a variety of Hot Pot choices), some with substantially elevated spice levels. There is a surprise or two to be found there, such as Kimchee Fish, and West Lake Soup, neither known for their Szechuan characteristics. So, we came for lunch today, anxious to be impressed, and indeed we were - indeed! We were quickly and warmly greeted, just as quickly seated, supplied with a substantial menu, and our drink orders were soon at the table. We had already made ourselves familiar with the menu (both traditional and not), and pretty much knew what we wanted, and there would be plenty to take home. Our choices - to start, the Kimchee appetizer (I know, but I like freshly made Kimchee), and Fried Chicken Wings (I KNOW, but a reviewer had so gushes over them that I felt compelled). We had settled on Potato & Shredded Pork (the potato part was the clincher), Twice Cooked Beef (no parenthetical comment seems appropriate), and Tri-Pepper Chicken ( if 1 pepper is good, you must TRI 3). The Kimchee was out first, and it was simply that, a dish of sharp tasting Kimchee (mostly cabbage, of course), with some definite backbone. The wings followed shortly, and at first glance, I thought they were Buffalo style wings, but they were much more than that - they were well marinated, well fried Chinese wings with a very nice, addictive ginger and soy hook - none survived to move to the take home boxes. The entrees rolled out in something under 20 minutes, and the plating was beautiful, the aromas were intoxicating. Each dish was amazing in taste, texture, and spice level. The Potato and Shredded Pork so went together, and was the dish with the least heat, but perhaps the best combination of flavors - the potatoes were julienned, and cooked to an al dente (Italian term I know, but Marco Polo went to China, not a coincidence I think) level, perfect with the tender pork pieces, and the slices of crunchy green pepper - we double heart this dish! The Twice Cooked Beef was only marginally less exceptional - thin slices of very tender, very flavorful beef, mixed with an abundance of chopped scallions, in a savory, spicy brown sauce - mixed all in with a bit of white rice, and you're near perfection. The Tri-Pepper Chicken was the hottest of the entrees, and while it was a bit different than versions we tried previously (much more vegetable content), it was a superb dish. The chicken was very flavor - chunks of real chicken, not postage stamp thin strips of ugh! The dish contained lots of chopped red and green peppers, as well as plenty of fresh tasting, crunchy zucchini - the amount of vegetables in this dish was disappointing at first glance, but the tale was in the overall taste and texture of the dish - freaking amazing - zucchini is not just for grilling any more. The service was excellent - friendly, accommodating, charming. The waitress was all you could hope for - drinks refilled, plates removed as needed, every request handled promptly, pleasantly. The entrees were brought to the table by one of the chefs/owners(?), our overall satisfaction, and the spice levels were discussed, other menu items suggested for future visits (Whole Flounder, not de-boned). There was an older Chinese gentleman who stopped by our table, just to say hello & talk a bit - told us is grandson, who was in the restaurant, was 5, in preschool, and very good at English. It used to be my go to Chinese restaurant in Carrboro and I have ordered takeouts regularly after COVID hits. The thing is I can feel they are not as good as they used to be very drastically. First they changed their takeout containers to smaller ones. And then, with smaller containers, the food portion shrunk too. It's really sad to see the change of food in a degrading way. The taste was blander at best. My favorite dish from them, the dry pot got more watery and less greasy, which shouldn't be in that way. Hope they can step up to not be the shadow of their former self. read more

We ordered the dinner boxes and they delivered. It arrived pretty late, about half an hour later than average. Average I mean comparing with dinner delivery by other local Chinese restaurants. The food is fine. About the mid level among triangle competitors. A little spicy, not very greasy. It's a little bit surprising to me they put tomatoes with eggs as a dish, which is usually considered as casual and informal. Overall I agree it's about 3.5-4. This establishment has been open for decades based on plaques on wall. We stopped in after checking out the breweries within walking distance. Overall, the restaurant had a slight fishy smell and is in need of a good scrub down. I did not see the health score and really didn't think to look for it at the time (note, brewery stops beforehand.) The service was very prompt, food and drinks were served quickly and waters were refilled often. Egg drop soup was rich and noodles were crisp. Crab Rangoon came out hot, not the best I've had - outside was kind of chewy and more cream cheese than crab. Combo lo mien had plenty of meat and sauce with typical noodles. Decent place to stop for an inexpensive meal to soak up your adult beverages. No stomach issues the next day, so assume food safety was adhered. Yay! read more

I ordered the shrimp pad Thai and he asked them if it was a gluten free selection and they assured him it was. Nope! Here I am on a Friday evening with severe abdominal pain, cramping and diarrhea. Authentic flavors and big portions. I tried many items here and enjoyed them all. This restaurant definitely has a Szechuan leaning vibe with the hot red chilies. The dumplings were good but not as crispy as l normally like- probably a function of the takeout. The dry stir fried string beans were my favorite. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. The cumin lamb had great flavor but I would have wanted less oil and inedible chilies with more heat. The mapo tofu was good but the sauce was slightly overwhelming for the amount of tofu. Jade Palace is my take-out savior. A review below notes an incident about trouble with a takeout order. I've never had any issues and have ordered at least 10 times. If you want to dine in, there is plenty of seating for a dinner out in this cute, family-owned restaurant. Their menu is extensive, and I love it. If you like Asian cuisine, there is so much to try. I've become the biggest fan of their Tripepper Chicken (see picture) and there's no convincing me to get anything else! It's amazing takeout and lasts me 2 meals at the cost of $10-11. The service was okay - the waiter was definitely busy, serving multiple tables at once, so they took a while to come back. They were being a little short too - just the day I feel. I love The Palace! I've never had a bad experience with Jade Palace. This place has been around forever and there's a reason for that. Their food is awesome. I love that they will allow substitutions or will double up on certain vegetables if I ask. Whenever I ask for double mushrooms, they always honor my request and really give me a lot of mushrooms. Another reviewer complained about the amount of broccoli included in their entrees, which is ridiculous, because there's no such thing as too much broccoli! I've been doing dine in and take out here for nearly 12 years and don't see that ending any time soon. Also, I love how, in late afternoon (starting around 5pm or so) if you're hanging out at Weaver Street, you can smell the food from Jade Palace. It makes me want to go over there every time and get some cashew chicken! read more

The taste is one of the best in RTP and not to mention the services - highly communicative and considerate. We've been customers of Jade Palace for years. Last night's carryout order was our third since the pandemic began and we can now definitely say that we have experienced the quality of their food decline steadily during this time. Both our entrees and appetizers were substandard and disappointing, so much so that I am motivated to write a review so that others know what we experienced: Our order of Moo Shu Vegetables, one of our go-to dishes, was standard and OK. The Chinese Broccoli in Oyster Sauce had no real sauce to speak of. It came served in a brine that tasted like seawater. Steamed Vegetable Dumplings? Tasteless and forgettable. The Hot and Sour Soup was the most disappointing dish of all. The soup was neither hot (spicy) nor sour; it was gummy and bland. The mushrooms were neither wood ear mushrooms nor shiitake; they were tasteless, cheap, button mushrooms sliced in half. The eggs -- a key ingredient in any hot and sour soup -- were completely absent. Zero stars. Did not even eat half. Chinese Spicy Crispy Fish: we always order this and it comes in a sauce. While the fish we got was decent fried fish, it was not what we ordered. Something like this, on top of everything else that I have described, is so disappointing when you don't eat get takeout very often and are looking forward to your favorite dish. Honestly, while I want this Carrboro business to survive the pandemic, I also want them to step up their game. Our previous two orders during the pandemic showed signs of slippage that we were willing to forgive, but the food we were served last night by Jade Palace was not even mediocre and not worth the money we paid for it. read more

Wow. Just plain pathetic. I hate giving places one-star reviews, but I see it as much sovereign duty to prevent other people from wasting their time and money here. I love Chinese food, but I could barely stomach this stuff. My honey chicken was - I kid you not - fried chicken smothered in honey mustard dressing (if that wasn't honey mustard dressing, it was really, really close). It was not good. And they charged me through the nose for it. The kung pow chicken tasted like a frozen dinner that had been microwaved. They would not refill my water (who ever heard of that at a Chinese restaurant!?). They charged my friend for a coke refill but didn't even tell him. I couldn't believe it. As if that wasn't enough, if took them twenty minutes to give us our blasted check. And we were the only ones there. This is a terrible restaurant. Don't come here. I order delivery from Jade Palace all the time, and it scratches the itch if you have a craving for Westernized Chinese food. Chicken with garlic sauce and an order of crab rangoons are my staples at any Westernized Chinese restaurant, but Jade Palace's chicken with garlic sauce isn't really too my liking; it's kind of flavorless. I usually order the chicken with broccoli and and sriracha to it instead. The crab rangoons, however, are delicious. I've also dined in once at Jade Palace and tried a couple dishes from the authentic menu. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything too memorable. Gourmet Kingdom less than a mile away is on par if not better than Jade Palace if we're looking at the competition in the authentic Chinese cuisine arena. I have lived in Carrboro quite some time and have eaten that Jade Palace for years. Recently though I'm eaten take out there a few times and it is starting to decline. I ordered kung pao chicken last night with white rice and the ingredients we're not fresh. The rice was dry. I think that this pandemic has taken its toll on the ability to get fresh ingredients to cook with. My kung pao chicken had absolutely no color in it. The only vegetable that even looked like I could identify it was the zucchini. I won't be eating here anymore. Very disappointing. read more

We were once-a-week customers at Jade Palace for years, but we will never give them another dime. The last time we ordered delivery from them, I ordered the House Special Wonton Soup for Two, because my sick mother had requested wonton soup. As there was no description on the menu, I assumed based on the price that it was their regular wonton soup, just sized up for two servings. That's the convention with most of their other soups/pricing, and at pretty much every Chinese restaurant I've ever seen. When the soup arrived, it was full of vegetables, mushrooms, and shrimp. My mother has a shellfish allergy, so of course she couldn't eat the "wonton soup" that Jade Palace sent. So I called to see if we could get the regular, shrimp-free, wonton soup delivered instead. I was told that I ordered the "House Special" soup, which came with "everything we put in all the soups," including shrimp. I explained that this wasn't clear from the menu, and that my mom literally couldn't eat it because of the shrimp. I was again told "You ordered it," and informed that if I wanted more soup I would have to pay for it. I offered to pay for it if they would credit me for the inedible soup, and was told that they wouldn't credit me for something I ordered. I then offered just to order/pay for more soup, and was told it would take 2-3 hours before they could deliver it. At this point, I asked if I could speak to a manager. I was put on hold for 20 minutes, at which point I hung up. I later called back and left my number for a manager to call at their convenience the next day. I was assured someone would call, although no one ever did. I am not the type to post bad reviews for bad food or bad service. I've worked in restaurants myself, and I know that anyone can have an off night. I do think it's important for people to know when a restaurant doesn't take allergies seriously, however. Had the shrimp in that soup not been clearly visible, my mother would have eaten it and gone into anaphylaxis. That's not cool. For the restaurant to respond so flippantly with "well, you ordered it" just added insult to injury. Their menu should clearly list that the soup contains shrimp, as every other item containing shrimp seems to have it listed. Anyway, I could have forgiven the incident itself since no one was hurt. But the (non-)response to my concerns was alarming and annoying. I don't think it's safe to eat here if you have allergy concerns, and I'm posting this to warn others so they don't have the same experience we did, or worse. read more

Disclaimer: Delivery In all fairness I did order things that are best served hot and fresh and are also not your authentic Chinese dishes. I understand I need to venture out to try other items and dine in for a full review. However, this review pertains to my delivery of chicken wings, steamed veggie dumplings, and a spring roll. Delivery took exactly an hour to UNC campus. My food was lukewarm but it's kind of like ordering fries and not eating them right away so I don't fault them. The filling of the dumplings and the spring roll were identical and the chicken wings tasted like any other chinese place in my opinion. The dipping sauce for the dumplings was so good though, like vinegar, soy sauce, chinese spices and scallions. Overall the food was good so I will definitely give them another try. They are also one of the few places that deliver that isn't pizza. *The website states Estimated Time - Between 60 and 75 minutes for all deliveries* keep in mind if you are starving lol read more
