After moving to NC from California, I really missed the variety of Asian food I could get back home. I heard about Cham Thai, so I gave it a try when I was craving some pad see ew. The portion size was massive, with generous portions of pork and broccoli. The rice noodles were perfectly bouncy and well seasoned with the sweet soy sauce. The Thai food was really delicious, with the right kick of chili, while the Thai tea helped wash down the heat. Overall, Cham Thai is a great restaurant, and I will soon be back for more. I was excited to try Cham Thai it after reading a number of enthusiastic reviews, particularly from Californians who said it reminded them of the kind of delicious authentic Thai food that's easy to find out there and that I got used to living in Los Angeles for five years. Our party of four was seated immediately at 6:30pm on a Friday evening. We ordered three dishes: - pad see ew with shrimp - red curry with shrimp - massaman curry with tofu The pad see ew was the standout: the large shrimp and the broccoli were cooked perfectly, and it had good flavor overall. The two curries were disappointing. The tofu in the massaman curry was cut very small and seemed over-fried, and the sauce lacked the creamy richness I associate with that dish -- the kind that comes from potatoes simmering in the curry for a long time (and the potatoes seemed barely cooked). The red curry had only two pieces of eggplant (!) and was overwhelmed by too many red and green bell peppers -- they dominated the flavor profile. Like the pad see ew, the red curry did include large, well-cooked shrimp, which was its saving grace. Both curry dishes also had far more bamboo shoots than seemed necessary (as another Yelper notes, about 5x what other places put in). Using so much of an an inexpensive filler vegetable looks like a way the restaurant is trying to save money -- just sayin'. I also tasted a companion's tom kha soup, which was essentially warm coconut milk with very little additional flavor. More bamboo shoots... One note about both serving sizes and presentation: the serving platters at Cham Thai are extremely wide and very shallow, which spreads the food out into a very thin layer over a large area and gives the impression of a larger portion of food than is actually there (noting this because many reviews say that the "portions are huge" -- not our experience). For diners needing gluten-free options, the messaging from the staff was very confusing. At first we were told confidently by our server that "any dish on the menu could be easily be made gluten-free" because the kitchen "has three sauces: regular, vegan, and gluten-free." When we ordered a dish gluten-free, however, the server paused, said he "needed to check something," left, and returned to say that dish could NOT be prepared gluten-free after all (?). A "Cashew Nut" entree ordered gluten-free arrived missing the cashews; after checking with the kitchen, the server explained they had been omitted because the fried cashews in the dish could not be guaranteed gluten-free due to cross-contamination. It would have been helpful to know that ahead of time, or given raw cashews when the dish was served to us. Our server apologized and eventually gave us a bowl of raw cashews on the side. It's also worthy of note that NONE of the eleven dishes they call "Recommendations" on the menu are vegetarian (see photo). All in all, our meal at Cham Thai didn't quite live up to the restaurant's Yelp reviews. There is better Thai food in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area. read more

This will be my partner and I's take out spot whenever we miss home. The Bay Area is known for being home to a variety of eclectic cuisines and we are seriously experiencing home withdrawals being in Chapel Hill. Cham was a huge hit for takeout today for lunch!! I was greeted by the owner (? at least I think she's the owner!) and was very impressed that the food was ready within 10 minutes of ordering. Everything was piping hot and the Thai tea was made right to order. Another bonus was the pokemon card shelf next to the front desk! I think it's absolutely so sweet of her to lend some space to help her husband sell some extra cards to other Pokemon card collectors! I'm not a card collector, but my favorite Pokemon was in the shelf and I just had to buy! Super reasonable prices too. Never saw Japanese Pokemon cards until today!! Cash or Zelle only for folks interested, hehe. Anyways, food was da bomb dot com!!! Bountiful pieces of pork and a good portion of pad Thai for me. My partner got the pad see ew and I also visibly saw a huge plate of meat at the end, lol. He likes to eat his proteins at the end, while I prefer to eat them first! After all, gotta make sure I make room for the best part of a meal (aka the meat). The flavors of the pad Thai were sweet and tangy, and coated each noodle generously. The Thai tea was a perfect combo, as it's been super hot for my partner and I, being here in NC. Can't wait to stop by Cham's again! My favorite Thai restaurant in the Triangle. Seems authentic to me, though I haven't been in Thailand in some time. We've tried about 10 dishes from here and they're all pretty solid. My favorite is the pineapple fried rice. Perfect flavor and rice texture. My husband loves the Khao Soi - layers of texture with the crispy noodles, noodle soup and meat. Not pictured but get the mango sticky rice! They use pandan for the sticky rice which is a nice touch. SO good! read more

Clean Asian decor. Very friendly and speedy service. You can't beat the deals on the lunch special which comes with fried wontons and a soup or salad. The salad was simple but delicious. Just lettuce and spiraled carrots with what I assumed was grated carrots with a tasty ginger sauce added. The fried wontons on the plate come with a sweet dipping sauce. I ordered the Spicy Bamboo Shoots with chicken which was hot enough to get a reaction from my body. But not sweating hot. The dish was very tasty and satisfying. super cozy thai spot near unc campus! we finished up rug tufting near by and craved some thai food and found cham thai! i'm obsessed with pad see ew and was so happy to see it was on the menu! we ordered fresh rolls too and it was delicious! i appreciate them cutting it in half, really makes it easy to eat! after around 15 minutes, our food came and the workers were friendly! we arrived just before 7p and there was a good line for pick up and dine in but it was a quick process! there was a good bit of others enjoying their meals here, the decor was so homey and warm as well. i definitely want to try more items on the menu, especially some seafood next time! read more

One of my favorite Thai restaurants in this area! I have gone a handful of times and each time I am met with great service, attentive waiting, and great suggestions for food to try. Love that the restaurant isn't extremely large and there is a cozy feeling to it. The lighting and decorations make for a cute atmosphere to go on a date in Carrboro. I have had a wide range of dishes off the menu but I always go back to ordering the Tom yum Nam kon because of its flavor and amount of seafood. It is certainly large enough for one person's meal and great for sharing. The pineapple fried rice with beef was fragrant and it was my first time trying it. This was my second take-out experience ordering from Cham Thai. It is always busy picking up food here and you will wait a little, but I think it is worth it. I ordered the fresh rolls, spicy crispy tofu, pad thai with chicken, spicy bamboo shoots with beef, basil fried rice, and panang curry with shrimp. Last month, I got the chicken satay, fresh rolls, Mongolian beef, green curry with chicken, crab fried rice, and pad thai with shrimp. In general, their portions are well worth the money and very large. Overall, I prefer Cham Thai over other thai places because it is generally less greasy and oily. I can eat a hearty plate of food and not feel gross and lethargic afterwards. It was nice to try a variety of dishes over the last two times I ordered from here, but I definitely have my favorites. The fresh rolls are a nice refreshing addition to an otherwise hearty meal, although I wish it came with peanut sauce instead of this vicious vinegary sauce. I would not recommend the spicy crispy tofu-- not much flavor and it was very oily. The panang and green curries were both delicious, with the panang being a tad more watery than I like-- I preferred the green. I would not order shrimp with the curry because it seemed like they gave less in that dish than they did in the pad thai for example. The pad thai was delicious (I recommend shrimp for this), having lots of acidity an extra squeeze of lime, umami flavors, and scallions for freshness. Both of the fried rice dishes were good-- I liked the crab more only because the basil fried rice did not have much basil in it, which was a little disappointing. I really recommend the Mongolian beef-- I think it is probably superior to another entree you could order with beef based on how much more I liked it compared to the spicy bamboo shoots dish. In general, I will keep coming to Cham Thai when I have a craving and hope to continue exploring their menu until I come up with my solid order. read more

Great food! I came with a group of 4 on a busy Friday night around 6:30 pm, and we got seated around 7. There were a lot of people eating inside, waiting to pick up orders, or just waiting to eat inside in general. There were only 2 servers though, unfortunately not enough to manage the dinner rush all by themselves. The 2 servers were very kind and did all they could to run the establishment on their own. Phenomenal Thai food with generous portions and at reasonable prices! I had takeout from Cham Thai, so I can't speak to the service or ambiance of the restaurant, other than the parking situation. There is parking that wraps around and behind the complex next door to the restaurant, and I ended up parking there and running inside to pick up my food. Not sure if there is another parking lot to park at, but just a heads up that the parking wasn't the most straightforward. Other than that, I truly enjoyed the food. I had the pineapple fried rice with tofu (medium spicy) and massaman curry with chicken (mild) and both were super flavorful. This has to be one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the Chapel Hill area - great portions of food for a great price and such a friendly environment. The Pad Thai is my go to and never disappoints. It arrived fresh, hot, and pretty quickly. The staff was very friendly too! The place is decorated for all holidays at all times of the year (Christmas/winter decor still displayed in May). Tl;dr: GREAT Thai food and very kind staff! Best in the RDU area! Chef Anthapol and his wife are amazing-- their customer service and food are unbeatable. We visited on a Thursday and walked into a full house. We were seated outside which was great because the weather was sunny but cool. We had a concert to attend so we were a little tight on time, but the food came out very quickly. We ordered the pad see ew and mango sticky rice. The pad see ew had the perfect amount of flavor. The searing on the rice noodles added the best amount of smokiness while the vegetables were just done so that they were tender but had good crunch to add the necessary texture. While that was amazing, our favorite was the mango sticky rice. Cubed, in-the-skin mango halved with steamed sticky rice folded with coconut milk. The perfect thing to have during spring. I was told that the Khao Soi was out of this world and that they order a lot of its ingredients from Thailand which makes their Khao Soi stand out from the rest. Definitely will be back!!! read more

Stopped in for a Sunday lunch on my first trip to Carrboro in a while, so the place was new to me. Long story short, I'll definitely be making the trip back! We started with soup -- their soups are big, and the menu states that they serve 2-4. I let my dining partner pick and he chose the wonton soup, which wouldn't have been my top choice but I'm SO glad he did! This isn't your standard, flat wontons in broth that takeout has accustomed us to. These are flavorful, handmade wontons in a soup that's packed with vegetables, chicken, and shrimp. Honestly we could have made a meal out of that and a salad (the two of us finished the soup but took most of our entrees home!) I deviated from my usual Thai food standbys and ordered the basil squid. I'm particular about squid and it's easy to tell whether a place knows what they're doing. This place DOES. The squid was in a vibrant sauce of mixed vegetables and was cooked perfectly. I ordered it medium spicy and it was spot on -- opened my sinuses without becoming uncomfortable. My companion ordered the pad silver noodles and was equally impressed (I don't like thin noodles in general but I did try a piece of the beef and it was delicious!) We seldom order dessert at restaurants, but this time decided on the coconut cake. Holy MOLY. It was so light both in texture and in sweetness. The best part was the chunks of fresh coconut in the icing -- not dried like you're used to, but actual fresh coconut. The service was quick, attentive, and friendly. The interior space is nothing particularly special but it's clean, spacious, and welcoming. I like that they leave you a carafe of water for the table. Absolutely love this spot! When I was a UNC student, I was always here either dining in or getting takeout. I came here yesterday and unfortunately did not get any photos, my plate looked too good that my phone did not eat first I usually order the basil shrimp or basil chicken as my meal, requesting it to be Thai hot of course! It's so so good and the serving size is also great. I also love their fresh rolls appetizer and they really get you ready for the main meal. Very Disappointed in Cham Thai's new ownership. This was by far the best Thai place around chapel hill. Now, it's hardly edible. We'd been around 8 times before and it's always been so so so good. Now that the new owners changed the menu, the food is flavorless and bad. One of our dishes had no flavor at all and the other just tasted of propane gas. I love this restaurant (and it's food) with all my heart. The prices are so incredible for the quality and volume of food I've received. I fell in love with lime-y soups here, with the Tom Kha and I always order the papaya salad. The tom kha is always filled with generous toppings, like large pieces of tender chicken and miscellaneous veg. I seem to always end up drinking the residual papaya salad sauce as well... Food is good my favorite are the curries and the tofu soup but honestly the rest of the food could be better, feels they lack the flavor they seem to be able to give, service has been horrible for me lately they for some reason started to give me stink face and rushing me out when I dine in so I no longer visit, the female workers are there only ones treating me like that but the one male worker idk his name he has always been the same friendly and always smiling!, my main thing is the way they treated my mom who has stage 4 cancer I took her and they rushed us out and messed up her order and instead of fixing it they just took it off the bill and for a restaurant with so much potential they have gone downhill, your better off going anywhere else and it's way to tiny and gets crowded fast. read more
