Finally after passing by this place 12 times, it's open. The key to visiting this place is to come on a Sunday after 1PM before 5PM. Geek heaven. This is a history museum of vastly different machines, scientific equipment, and academic oddities. Most of the stuff has been rented out to movies and used as non working props. There is a working Tesla coil - the machine that generates electricity at science museums. I was surprised to see lots of things for sale - scientific instruments, books, optometry lenses and vision measuring equipment, globes, old typewriters. The guy who gives the tour will give you an entertaining talk about the owner, the objects in the space, and lots of references to geniuses of the past. Be nice, and ask before taking pics. I was able to take one "souvenir" photo of an obscure corner of the store.

Mechanical airship in the front window. During business hours, the wheel turns, the wings flap, and the place on the back moves

Some of the most interesting stuff is just available for rental, but there is a lot for sale. It's old, some things are a bit -or more than a bit - dusty and dirty but that just adds to the charm. What really stood out was the friendliness of the staff. Exceptionally nice and helpful which is not always a given in this type of place. Literally didn't balk at going up a ladder for a couple of dollars of heat shrink tubing. When I got to the counter and was making my purchase a manger (or maybe an owner?) said one of the things was too much and cut the price dramatically. I can't remember the last time that has happened to me, and I'm as old as dirt. :-) If you are a maker, tinkerer or just a fan of cool old stuff you owe yourself a visit to Apex. For me, it was at the end of a 400 mile drive, I was tired and had other places to go, but every minute there was a pleasure.

I've been a couple times now, the first time I don't recall any issues, but recently I found the docents oddly unfriendly. As I waited for a friend to use the restroom, they kept peering out of their office to check on me as though I was looking for trouble. Their problem was that you're not supposed to explore the bottom level without guidance. It's a stupid rule. The museum is small enough to explore in less than 30 minutes, so being forced to have someone guide you makes it feel very stuffy. It'd be much nicer to simply offer a guide, that's the point of a docent, I thought. Maybe just go in and ignore them, it'll be more entertaining that way.

This museum is located on Main street in Ocean Park, Santa Monica. I accidentally strolled by Main street and saw this museum. It's a very small museum whereby you can see the entire museum in 5 minutes! And I'm not being facetious. You'll find some interesting artifacts. Today, the admission was free. They have a permanent collection and rotating exhibit. Overall, this museum is a bonafide golden gem of the community. I recommend you visit if you have 5 minutes to spare.
