Respectfully, I would not return. I did not receive a silk press. It was more of a flat iron if anything. It became puffy as soon as I stood up from the chair. This was so upsetting because I had an important event the day after and I looked like I got electrocuted. The girl with the freckles was nice and I did get a complementary conditioning treatment by the owner, which was sweet. There were other complications with my appointment (stylist change, dye job, etc.) but overall, I'd give it 2 stars. For my first time coming to Jaraki salon, I had high expectations beforehand but I was highly disappointed with the service I received today. When I first walked in I noticed there was a sign that says no children but there were 3 children in the shop. During this time one of the children throws popcorn on the floor and he gets popped. While I'm getting my hair wash, the receptionist was complaining about the sinks being filled with hair. (Who wants to hear that the sinks aren't getting cleaned properly) Next, My time under the dryer extended my expected time I felt I should have been under the dryer due to the stylist having back to back clients. Once I explained to her that I am unable to wait around due to the fact that I have my son waiting at home and it's already been over 2 hours since I arrived. That is when the attitude checked in lol. From the way she was blow drying my sew in to the way she was spraying the heat protectant (literally went all over my forehead) then the way my hair was being clipped. My hair was not blow dried in parted sections. More like large sections to get it done faster. Even down to my roots on my leave out is still wavy and not straightened the right way. No product for my "fly aways" or Her attitude showed through the way she continued to do my hair! When you work in customer service, you are supposed to be able to mask how you feel pertaining to a situation. My overall my experience was ghetto & not the lavish experience I expected. A year later and I am still a patron of Jakari J salon. Since my first visit, I have been nothing but pleased. Shanel (the owner and master stylist) continues to style my hair most of the time however, I have used the other stylists and they are just as great. Since my first cut, I have also had a weave done by Shanel that lasted for quite sometime. She is versatile and amazing at her craft. Before coming to Jakari J, I was almost ashamed to wear my natural hair without any sort of weave or extensions. I felt ugly and less confident when wearing my natural hair, no matter if it were permed or hot combed. However, Shanel brought life to my hair. She puts a lot of pride and effort into your service to make you look and feel magnificent. And even on days when I thought I could go a month and a half without perming my hair and expect her to cut it the same way after I JUST washed it (I know I needed a wake up call), she still came up with a fix that was laidddddddddd for an event I had to attend. I love my hair now! It's healthy and continues to show growth with every appointment I attend. The staff are awesome, very personable, friendly and professional. Ignore how tired I look but this was an amazing experience especially since this was the first time I visited with a last-minute appointment. I needed a natural hair salon in Queens because I had bad heat damage and bleach damage. Being a guy who typically get Cesars, this was my very first time at a Salon for myself and I couldn't have had a better experience. The beautiful people who work here keep a smile on your face and the background music reasets the tone and really keeps you engaged while your waiting for your hair to be done. I recently took out my braids and I really needed a trim. I didn't want to go to a Dominican salon since they tend to use too much heat so my friend recommended this place. I didn't make an appointment and did a walk in on a early Friday afternoon. I had a wash, deep conditioner, blow dry and trim. Pros: the salon was very welcoming and the decor was inviting. Very chic with an open floor pane and a lot lighting from the large windows. I appreciate the change from the usual cramped Dominican hair salons I go to. Every single employee I came in contact with was friendly and showed great customer service. There is definitely a young vibe in there which I liked and everyone seemed sweet. My hair washing experience was really good. For one, I knew my hair was tangled since I just took out my braids. So the stylist had to put in a lot of arm strength to comb through it lol. During the deep conditioning part, they literally massaged the conditioner into my scalp! That was definitely the best part. Con: ok, so although the wash was good, I felt the detangling process was wayyyy too rough considering they do natural hair. I know I could've combed it out prior to coming but I know I'm not the only person who hasn't detangled before going to this salon. The blow drying experience was really where it went downhill. Another person had to take over and I knew right away she didn't have much experience which resulted in it taking twice as long and a bit painful. Eventually the original stylist took over to finish and did my trim as well. However, my trim was uneven and I actually had to go home and fix it which defeated the purpose of me coming there in the first place. In addition, some parts of my hair doesn't curl the same which I won't get upset about since it's already done. Overall, I definitely try to support black businesses and I'm glad I at least tried it. If you live in the neighborhood, I would recommend maybe making an appointment so you know exactly who is going to do your hair. Unfortunately, I personally don't believe I would go back due to the distance and the blow drying/trimming experience. However, they seem to have a lot of happy customers so this could've been a result of me being a walk in. read more

She has done various styles for me: weaves, braids, ponytails, silk press, rod sets, etc. She is a master stylist. I trust her with my hair more than I trust myself. If she ever leaves Jakari J, then I leave Jakari J. I cannot speak about Akelia's professionalism because she has become a friend to me, so we speak freely with each other. However, as a professional, I understand the various expectations a customer might have when they patronize a business - especially for the price of Jakari J's services. If Akelia does not consistently meet the minimum professional business standard then she should improve. Nonetheless, I stand by her talent, her skills and the quality of her work. read more

I've only visited the salon once but it was truly a 5 star experience. I booked a last-minute appointment with Issay for a silk press based on a friends recommendation and he did a phenomenal job! First, I was washed and conditioned by Tiara. She may very well be the most gentle person to ever handle my hair. I'm so tender-headed I couldn't believe there was no pain to the detangle process. I also appreciate that they recommend a different conditioner then what I'd picked online (there's kind of no way to know what's what as a first timer) but I love to be educated on what's best for my hair in particular. I had a steam treatment and then on to styling. Issay gave me a trim that I desperately needed (without taking off too much hair) and gave me a silk press that lasted a full week (with only one pass over each section). I will follow Akelia to literally anywhere she goes. I'm very very self conscious and sensitive about my natural hair condition she always makes me feel comfortable and eases my anxiety. The 1st time I came to the salon, I went to get a silk press, wash and trim. I had a 9:30 appointment and I didn't walk out until 1:30 p.m. The 2nd time the I went there I want to get a ponytail. It took the stylist 3 hours to wash my hair, flat iron it, and give me a ponytail. The third time I went there I want to get a bun. I had a 10:15 appointment that I was early for an I didn't end up walking out to almost 3:00 p.m. A week later I took down the bun only to realize that my hair had significant heat damage. Staff is very friendly and very apologetic which they have to be because they know that they're overbooked and clients have to wait a very long time period. I never want to leave bad reviews especially not for a Black owned salon. I've been to this salon years ago with my wife and the experience was beautiful. This was at the original location and they had less stylists but amazing service. So of course when my best friend and I decided to get makeovers I was thrilled to see this place had appointments. Please let me say my stylist Quoia was personable, skilled and I left feeling beautiful. But unfortunately because of the lack of structure in the salon and the rudeness of other stylists I won't be returning and I said this to her before leaving. If she ever went to another Salon I'd follow her there but the culture at this salon was too toxic. The salon called prior to our appointments and asked if my best friend and I could come in at 8:30a instead of 10:15, we obliged. I was there at 8:21 AM and the receptionist asked why I came so early as our appointment wasn't changed in the books. I told her we spoke to someone on the phone and agreed to come in earlier to accommodate the stylists. Then a stylist (I think it was actually the owner) came over to my friend and I after 9a and said they were fully booked and her hair could not be done until tomorrow because they could tell it was a long process, they told her to come in at 7:30a the next day and said a colorist would be coming to speak to her next. Shortly Akiela came over and told her she'll do her hair but only if she comes tomorrow at 9a. We explained that the last person just said 7:30a to which she replied they must be smoking crack if they think I'm coming in at 7:30a my shift starts at 11 the earliest I'll come in for you is 9a. My friend says okay and asks what the process is that will make her hair take longer etc - the colorist explains that her hair color being red needs to be extracted and that she knows that since my best friend is Indian she won't like the shade of brown that happens after the first extraction but because Indians have strong hair she'll do a few rounds on her. This comment left me a Black woman & my best friend an Indian woman extremely uncomfortable. I told the Akiela since we have appointments we need to know who is available to start her process today (my hair had already been started). She replied saying her and the owner (who my BFF booked) had no availability for the day. So I said while I understand that, we're not walk-ins so there should still be someone who will be taking care of her today even if it's just to start her extraction. Also I was confused as to why in the many phone calls they never asked what our hair colors were but okay. They then paired her with Quoia who again was amazing. However because of the lack of structure in the salon as well as the extensive process we went through and us both being taken care of by 1 stylist instead of different people for each of us like we originally booked we were in the salon for 11 hours. No braids just dye and a silk press for me, but 11 hours? Unbelievable. It gets worse, as I'm in the salon Akiela continuously made comments about clients, talked down to their assistant (British girl idk her name) and made references about my leggings being slightly see-through (which I obviously didn't realize before wearing) even pointing and mentioning it to other stylists. She even went as far to tell me that she's glad my hair wasn't dyed as light as I wanted it because it wouldn't look good on my complexion (I'm dark skin & I wanted blonde hair) and I would've looked like one of the girls on the Ave. She followed through saying now instead of looking like I'm from Jamaica Ave I look like Mary J Blige and when she noticed my nails with gold colors repeatedly mentioned I must have money and they should raise the price to 4/5 hundred. I woke up at 7a, got there at 8:21a and left there at 7p just to be treated like crap and talked down to. I had a countdown in my phone, I felt so excited and Akiela ruined that experience read more

So let's bring in the new year right and talk about this dope salon. I'm going to break it down in categories. Stylist: I found out about Raquel on Instagram and she is so bomb and professional at her craft. When you ask for a color she do what she has to do to make sure you come alive again. She also make sure that before you leave out the salon that you are satisfied and if not she will do anything in her power to fix it. From experience Raquel is a team player and will also consult with her coworkers for opinions as well. She really rock and is such a sweet person. She make you feel comfortable even on the first time meeting her. She will now be the ONLY person that can color my hair. I was ready to walk out with my hair wet because I loved the color so much that I didn't care about the style. She is the "Color Doctor!" Salon: The decor is beautiful and everything is set up very well and did I mention that it is VERY CLEAN. They also do amazing Manicures and Pedicures. The ladies who does the nails are so damn fancy that they can do your nails and have fly glitz and glamorous nails on as well without messing up. I love the fact that this establishment have a lot of young women of color here that's making a difference. It shows that if us women can stick together things can manifest. read more

For starters, this is the first time I didn't have to advise I needed to be based before a relaxer - The salon already had it in works. My hair is NEVER this moisturized and healthy looking after an appointment. Also, she took a quick glimpse at the cut I wanted and killed it. I can't wait to go back. Summer did my silk press, she informed me on how to PROPERLY care for my natural hair, she recommended a hair treatment based on the state of my hair (heat damage) she did a scalp cleanse, then washed my hair. The scalp massage was everything then she did a hydrating treatment & I sat under the steamer. After the treatment she detangled, blow dried & straightened my hair, next we agreed on the amount she would cut & just like that I have a new bob ‍ she recommended products for me to use at home & in between my next visit with her & conveniently they were stocked on the shelves at the salon my experience was 10/10 read more

Issay ! Issay! I went in for a silk press and cut and what I got went beyond my expectations. Issay took his time washing my hair (I really wanted to fall asleep at his bowl) and handled every step with precision and care. I'm so used to my silk press lasting a few days, but with him it lasted weeks including physical activity and weather changes. What! I'm still shocked. I'm only back to kinks now because I wanted to wash my hair. I was so nervous, like what if it's too good to be true? What if my hair doesn't revert back? Nope ! I moved to Queens recently and it has been a challenge finding a solid hair salon. I came into Jakari today because I saw they took appointments. Their online presence was appealing as well. I made an appointment for 10am via their online portal for a silk press. I came in early and was told that my stylist was out for a moment. When she arrived, she introduced herself and answered my questions. When she was ready she mentioned that she'd be working on me and someone else at the same time. I wasn't thrilled but thought it wouldn't be too bad. Well, it's 3:30pm and I just left Jakari. They have a silk press down to take 1 HOUR. The young lady who washed my hair was the highlight of my 5+ hours at this place. She was super thorough, professional, and sweet. However, she had to stop working on my hair a few times to take care of other clients. For what they charge and how they present themselves online, I was not expecting this type of service AT ALL. My hairdresser checked in with me from time to time and reminded me that things were running the way they were because she was working on me and someone else. When I finally thought she was going to focus her attention on me, she tells me she was doing A SEW-IN. A SEW-IN. And that she'd be "right with" me. I didn't get up and leave because I had an event on this day. Any other time/place I'd be out the door. If you have a job, business, or run on a stringent schedule, this is not the place for you. It's a shame too because my hair came out nice. However, I refuse to line someone's pockets while they show no regard for my time. I'd mentioned to my stylist that it was my first time at the salon. Usually when it's your first time patronizing a business folks want to leave a good impression. That's clearly not the case here. Finally, there was A LOT going on here this day. Unprofessional behavior and raucousness from some of the stylists which is a hard pass for me. Especially if I'm waiting around for 5+ hours already annoyed. I went in for a silk press and it did come out great. However, I have natural hair and I felt that even though my stylist had curly hair, she did not handle my natural hair in a gentle and healthy way. She was extremely rough when she was washing my hair, when she was detangling my hair, when she was massaging my head during the rinse, and when she was blow drying my hair. I'm not tender headed AT ALL so I don't understand why she was applying that amount of force to my hair and head. Another downside was that while I was in the hair dryer for my hair treatment, it seemed like my stylist just had me in the dryer for over 40 minutes to buy her time to finish with another client. I understand that a lot of stylists do this but there was entirely TOO MUCH talking going on between the stylists and not enough concentrating on the clients' hair. Overall, they had no real sense of urgency and at the very least didn't work at a natural pace. I'd advise anyone that goes here to not schedule anything for after your appointment because you won't know how long you'll actually be at the salon (even if the service you chose is supposed to be done within 1.5 hours). It was my first time going to this salon and although I liked the final result, I don't think I'd go back there. read more

The last time I have been to this salon was in 2021. I was with my mom. Anyway, my silk press frizzed up before I even had the chance to leave the salon. My mom made herself a follow-up visit despite the lack of professionalism that she experienced (stylists gossiping and not giving her the correct color that she wanted). We gave the benefit of the doubt because even the best businesses have off days. During this time, she was diagnosed with leukemia (cancer). On the day of her next appointment, she felt very sick and had to cancel. The receptionist was extremely rude. Not only did she tell my mom that she could not reschedule, she told her that she could not come to the salon again due to her last minute cancellation. Reason stated is that my mom violated the shop's cancellation policy. Following that experience, I will NEVER patronize this salon again. Customer service is imperative. I understand that businesses have a 24-48 hour cancellation policy. They will typically collect your card information and charge a fee for last minute cancellation. My mom tried to explain that she was not feeling well without getting into her personal business. The receptionist was cold and uncaring. I don't care how well some of the stylists can do hair. If a business has sub par customer service, it can only excel to a certain level. Maybe they will treat the folks in Long Beach better (doubtful). I also wish disabled and chronically ill patrons the best of luck dealing with these people for last minute cancellations. My advice is to look for a black owned shop that understands excellent quality AND customer service. read more

I feel like it's so hard to find a salon that is accessible, welcoming and has more than one strong stylist and in Jakari Salon, I've found just that! I saw some reviews with people who didn't have great experiences but after multiple visits I can say everyone is welcoming, accommodating and good at what they do! The space is clean, people are kind and the playlists are always on point. The pricing is reasonable. I'm not a price haggler but as a natural girl who has to make frequent visits, I think it's a fair exchange for what they are asking. Well I like my hairstylist Quoia & she does a wonderful job. I'm just trying to figure out how the 1st time I came I received more services and paid less. The prices are a little steep especially when I think if you wash,condition and mold the hair why should you be charged for flat iron,i didn't add on that service.i never seen the charge before and why shouldn't you style my hair after you cut it & I was charged for that too which is agreeable. Do you get charged for using a comb too? I have 2 inches of hair but it's ok.Once it grows out hopefully I'll be done moved & will find another good person with more reasonable prices without surprises. Not gonna lie this will be an honest review. I spend 9 hours here yesterday. I got a double process color, hydration and trim. Everyone was warm and welcoming up until I got to my stylist ASHLI smh. I got that "last head of the day" energy from her. She was doing my silk press and burned my scalp on every pass and was rough AF. I told her I wanted someone else to cut my ends thinking she would let them cut me and finish me off. But nope she flew out the door. Stylist don't understand just how important there job is. Your in control of how a woman sees herself my crown is everything to me. Thankyou for ISSAY he agreed to cut my ends and curled me up and as I sat in his chair he breathed life into me!! read more

I went last week Friday for a day of pampering...and when I tell you I got the best scalp wash and treatment from stylist Summer I was in heaven. Summer gave some great recommendations on how she was going to style my hair and get suggestions on my next visit as to what she plans to do.
