I spent weeks debating it I should write this review, but I figured that I would because I usually always review businesses that I've used so it would be bias if I didn't now. A brief history of my hair: I'm hair type 4C. I've always dyed my hair myself before. I'm not a professional, but I always felt like no one took generous care of my hair when I get it done professionally. I've never had heat damage or had to cut my hair for any reason other than yearly trims. My hair is generally strong and healthy. Prior to my visit, the front of my hair was a looser curl pattern than the rest of my hair. I went to Jakari J' Salon on March 31st, 2018 and was consulted, colored, and styled by Raquel (Roxi). We were achieving a color blue on my hair, in which she had to process twice with bleach. After the last bleach was rinsed, I asked her if everything was still okay, seeing that parts of my hair seemed straightened, but she said it was fine. Trusting her as a professional, I left all else in her hands. My color came out exactly how I wanted, she surely did not fail at all on that part. I loved it!! After, she recommended that I put in some curls with a rod set to "hold my curls". I was pretty hesitant at first and kept asking her if the curls would last for a week, and if the additional heat would do any damage, and she said no, it would be fine. We proceeded, and my hair came out popping! (There's a photo/video posted on their Instagram page and Yelp of it. I'll also be doing a blog post on this. www.Taqueth.com) The next couple of days, I didn't touch my hair. I wanted to keep the curls perfect until my trip to Jamaica. After about 5 days, I realized my hair kept falling out, strands after strands. On the 9th, I tried to wash and comb out my hair but it was badly tangled, especially at the ends. On April 10th, I went to my trusted stylist in Jamaica that usually does my trims and asked her to trim the damage that I had, but I also requested that she left me a good amount of length because I knew she would've had to cut more than I would've wanted. On May 6th, I got back to New York and I gave my hair a proper treatment that it needed. When I washed my hair, the curls that I was acting like I still had were absolutely nonexistent. I couldn't live in denial anymore. The color area that I paid for from Jakari was alllll damaged. I went back to Jakari on May 8th, and asked Roxi "what happened? I thought you said everything was okay?" And she simply said "I thought so too....". She cut off majority of the damage and told me "it'll be okay." No sorry, or explanation as to how this could've happened. But what was done was already done so I didn't even want to be in the salon for too long. It is what it is. Overall: Roxi did a fantastic job achieving the color that I requested, but my hair was left extremely damaged for the first time in my life. Let me start out by saying I'm not an avid salon goer but this first and LAST visit was unexpectedly unpleasant. The one star provided is for the quiet and calm environment in the salon as well as the hospitable assistant that greeted me. Other than that, this salon is over hyped and over priced. I've heard so many great things about this salon so I wanted to see what all the hype was. My appointment started on time, the stylist Shanel never once looked up or acknowledged me. Her assistant greeted me with price package for conditioner as if it were mandatory (big turn off) and I usually bring my own conditioner but I had forgotten it so I picked one that seemed beneficial and affordable. Long story short after being blow dried 2 times and flat ironed (don't see why that much heat was applied) shanel comes over and is very apathetic about the whole thing. Her one question to me was do you want volume or flat ? My answer was volume. She took all of 15 mins to snip at my ends which was supposed to be a trim yet when I left the ends of my hair looked ragged, and throw a few curls in my hair ... 90 dollars later I'm walking out with a complete Afro. Some words of advice for anyone planning to visit this salon with intentions of being treated as a valued customer : you're wasting your time and money. I've been natural since 2014 and that's when I found out my regular hair stylist was diagnosed with arthritis so naturally she stopped doing hair. I ended up getting a weave and then did a big chop after my leave out was damaged. So I turned to the YouTube academy of natural hair and felt like I was the best person to keep my hair healthy. I was wrong. Mistakes were made. It seemed like all of the great natural hair stylists were either in the DMV area or in Harlem (which sometimes can feel like a long commute from Queens/Long Island. I found Jakari J on Instagram and took a look at their work. I was so impressed that I called and scheduled an appt for a silk press. My appt was made for 9a, I arrived at 8:55a and Kayla began to wash and treat my hair. (Major points) Kayla was very professional and friendly. She asked the important hair care questions and gave advice if I were to treat my hair at home. She even massaged the treatment into my hair! After sitting under the steamer she then began to blow my hair out in preparation for the silk press which was done by Summer. Summer also inquired about the status of my hair and gave a simple solution to strengthen my hair again. Honestly I duck a lot whenever I get a blow out or a press in other salons but I didn't experience that at all. Finished with a much needed trim and a little bit of sheen. Summer was quick and super knowledgable. I'm excited to have her be my go to stylist for this natural hair journey. I'll definitely be a regular especially since it's black owned. I went to get a silk press with added tracks for fullness. I didn't expect to be there for 5 hours when my appointment slot was only 2 hours. My hair did not stay straight so it felt like a waste of my time and money. As soon as i left and drove home it got frizzy. I've had silk presses that left my hair straight and silky this wasn't it. It's a black owned business which i love to support. I think i May give them one more try just to see if maybe the day i went isn't how things normally are. The staff are very nice. Ashley was great. She was super busy which is why my stay was so long. She needed help tho. I think they need to figure that out. She was being pulled too many different ways. read more

This is a continuation of my review as Sania B. I am writing from a different account to finish it because yes I AM THAT ANNOYED STILL! Again I never written one review on any app. (Read first review from Sania B. To understand before proceeding)I thought professionals would of told me that based on them actually caring and not just wanting to take hundreds and hundreds of dollars if my money but I guess not. My colored hair was damaged and dry and I WAS following the conditioning routine but it did not suffice. I haven't went in a year and I have a ton of new growth and you can visually see and feel how healthy my new growth looks and feels. It feels soft and smooth and looks healthy. However when you see the red at the ends it becomes rough and ratty. To touch it feels tough and can see it's not as smooth or healthy just by looking. It just looks dry. To this day I am in a constant cycle of having the same length hair and my confidence being shattered because my hair grows super fast and every time it grows I have to cut off the same amount due to the damaged red hair. I can't retain any of my length due to the red hair breaking off or splitting and needing to be trimmed. It is my own fault for elongating this process as I need to just cut off the rest off the red hair instead of doing the trims but I am scared of how short my hair will look. All in all I take responsibility for not doing outside research on how color could affect my INDIVIDUAL HAIR TYPE and just trusting that they wouldn't do anything that would damage ny hair since they're results and pictures looked so good and they seemed like such a well put together salon. The customer service sucks and the attitude sucks but most of all they have no dignity and morals they rather take ny money then tell me that the color was RUINING my hair. Or at least tell me to stop coloring so often but no. Side bar I bought every shampoo and conditioner they told me to buy. I even bought olaplex on my own because the shampoo and conditioner they recommended left my hair feeling dry and brittle and I naturally have fine silky hair. Still this didn't work. Your better off getting a blow out from the Dominicans and telling them not to flat iron your hair you'll save A LOT of money and probably get better customer service. My hair has been healthier doing that then it was going to this salon and way less stressful. Don't waste your time or money coming to this salon to be treated terribly and deceived. I've been coming to Jakari J on and off for a while. No matter how much time passes, I always come back because I know I can trust the stylists to take care of me and my unruly hair. I recently had a "hair emergency" (or at least I thought it was). Now I'm pretty clueless when it comes to hair. I had taken out cornrows and in the process of trying to comb through conditioner in the shower after washing it, my hair kept breaking off and ripping out. I couldn't get the comb through my hair and didn't understand why either. Let's just say there might have been some tears on my part. Well, long story short, I DMed Jakari J Salon stylist Tamara Kelly and she agreed to come in early to the shop the very next day to help me out. Tamara was a miracle worker. She explained to me what went wrong and how to prevent the situation in the future. A short while later, I was looking like an entirely new person. Loved! Came in today, got a flexi-rod set after ALMOST returning to the creamy crack. I've been natural for over 5 years, my hair is thin & 4C, and won't let me live! This was my second visit to this salon and sadly I think it will be my last. I'll first start off with saying the stylists are very nice however waiting for hours with an appointment and a deposit paid is unacceptable. I came in for an extension removal, wash and trim and paid over $100 leaving without the trim because of how long I had to wait. Recommending additional services is fine but it would be appreciated for it to be explained what is being offered and the cost, also asking the client if they are okay with the additional cost out courtesy. Many additional services offered was a minimum of $30 each. I'm not sure who controls booking but it needs to be fixed and they need to refrain from over booking, I had a simple service request and that couldn't even been met and I paid a $50 deposit. I don't mind high prices as long as the service is top-tier and an enjoyable experience, I was better off going to another salon paying half the price and receiving better service. The aesthetic of the salon, the booking process, and the high prices are deceiving. I had an appointment at 11:30 and had to leave around 3:00 with my hair unfinished still paying over $100. Worst hair salon I ever stepped foot into and even a worst stylist. Went in for a normal press and trim with Issay and wish I never did. Didn't even have basic knowledge on how to detangle hair (starting from the ends and working your way to the root), barely used any conditioner for slip and was basically ripping out my hair. Trim came out horribly and had to redo when I got home. I usually tip even when there's bad service, but this is the only time I have regretted doing so. A hack job through and through. Quoia was very kind and professional to work with. My friend and I came in together and basically spent 11 hours with her and as a stylist and person, we could not have been more impressed. I was really unhappy with the environment of the salon- specifically of one stylist- Akiela. On your website her bio says her "staunch professionalism makes her second to none." She displayed none of that professionalism that is mentioned on the site. I understand the dynamic of being friends with coworkers and being able to laugh and joke around- but her jokes and comments were pointed at other clients, including my friend. It was painfully uncomfortable to be sitting in a room where stuff like this was happening and not feeling comfortable enough to speak up because our hair was undergoing extensive change / color processes and having an otherwise ok experience with our own stylist. Nowhere in the multiple phone calls or texts during the appointment confirmation process was I asked about the color of my hair, texture etc. So when my friend and I arrived at 8:30 I was told after about 15 min waiting that my hair needed to go through a color extraction which would require me to have come in at 7:30am. Shanel passed me off to Akiela who also had no time for me, so I don't understand why that even happened, and she then passed me off to Quoia. My issue with my experience is not Quoia or the service I directly received. I understood that my hair would take time because I had colored it red which is a challenging color to remove. My issue is strictly with the booking process and the mean- spirited comments I witnessed happening in front of me. I traveled 3 hours to get here I told them what I wanted through email and phone with pictures. I stated I may need a track or two and was told to bring a pack of weave. I showed up on time and was approached by the stylist Jakira saying she don't do weave but your receptionist said you do. Okay no problem I told her my hair can't take high heat what do she do put high heat on my hair no product other then shampoo and conditioner. Now all I wanted was a layered look with a deep swoop bang. I wanted to get roller set and a cut and body and shine. I got a blow dry/flat iron a lot of hair cut no layers. Smh nothing I ask for when I looked in the mirror it was frizzy dry other then volume smh I asked for sheen on my hair because it was dry. I was told no and handed oil I guess too do it myself. Smh mind you I left the shop hurt but at this point even if I flip the damage was done already done. She knew I was unhappy why the receptionist said it looks better than how You came in lol just wow. I drove 10 minutes away and it was over frizzy wavy and 98$ down the drain don't waste your time she was in a rush to leave I guess my travel expenses and hair costs me over 300$ the next day I had a wedding too attend I had to do a wet look with gel smh horrible experience. 2.5 for the actual service. Extra .5 because my stylist was ultimately really nice. I asked my friend where she gets her silk presses done because her hair is always on point. She referred me to Jakari and said they were a little on the expensive side. I checked and not only were they cheaper than other places I'd been referred to but it was closer so I was excited. 1st red flag was trying to make the appointment. I was told to hold on and would up holding for 25 minutes before I had to hang up. Called back a few times to a busy tone. Called a few hours later and was told "Sorry the shop got busy and no one hung back up the phone". Still made the appointment. Got there on time and was greeted. There was another woman waiting there for another stylist. She started 5 minutes later to wash and deep condition. The other woman started maybe 5 minutes after me. After she sat me down under a steamer maybe? I didn't see her and had to ask the other stylist if the machine was working and he informed me it took awhile. I look up and see her consulting another client and starting her wash before even coming back to say anything to me. By the time she got me to the sink to rinse me out the other woman had finished her service with the other stylist. I get trying to multitask but say something. After that she just blow dried and straightened and trimmed my hair. By the end of the day my hair looked like it had maybe been blow dried and the cut didn't look all that great. It's a nice salon but the shampoo staff need more training on how to shampoo and detangle different hair types. Combing type 4 hair in its dry state pre-wash without fIrst dampening or adding a bit of product to make it more pliable is just begging for unnecessary breakage. Not every hair type can be manipulated dry like this without damage. No customer wants to see their growth progress lost to careless detangling. read more

Maybe they pick and choose who to give good customer service to because I had a horrible experience here. I was happy to find a black owned salon that specializes in natural hair and I planned on coming every 2 weeks for silk presses, weaves, and flexi rod sets but now I don't want to go back at all. I booked shanel the owner who charges 20 dollars more than the other employees because I felt like her instagram was the most convincing and she had the best chance of getting my hair silky and straight for an event I had to go to the next day. When I got there her "Assistant" who is just somebody that works at the salon that I purposely didn't book to do my hair did almost everything. Also for some strange reason i didn't get a silk press even though that's what I booked and reminded her and the "assistant" that that's what I wanted. When he was done flat doing my hair she came and cut my hair and put a few curls in. After she put the curls in my hair I thought she was wrapping me up to put the Saran Wrap and put me under the dryer but she put pins in and told me I was done and walked away to go finish another client I guess she felt was more important. I asked the girl at the front desk and she said shanel doesn't do that when I know that's a lie because I seen her taking down silk wraps on her instagram. I didn't make a big deal because shanels energy was not welcoming and I didn't feel like dealing with a attitude or sarcasm. My total was 105 dollars so I asked the receptionist to break it down and basically I payed 65 for a silk press when the person who actually did my hair charges 45 just because shanel touched my hair at some point, 20 dollars to get my ends dusted, 20 dollars for a deep conditioner. All this and I swear when I got home my hair was very frizzy and the next day it was like I blow dried it myself at home. read more

Really nice atmosphere, and the music playing was on point. Easy to find location and great street parking available. The stylist I saw ran a bit behind but she kindly let me know. She was very personable and funny. She washed my hair just how I like it and def better than I have had it washed in the past. The price seemed pretty fair I just wish my style lasted longer. I had the rods put in for a twist out but it barely made it a week. When I had it done previously at another salon with only hands manipulating the twists it lasted 3x as long. No exaggeration. I sat there for an hour. Okay, my hair is started, deep conditioned. I wait a little while and my hair is started. Two other women got their hair done in the time I was getting mine done. By the same stylist! I left at 7:07. A girl was waiting to be seen for TWO HOURS. They boast about how no one answers the phone or if they do, they'll put you on hold and leave it off the hook. It's completely insane. Also, I left there with heat damage once. Just don't go. I really wanted to love this salon but I had a terrible experience. I had an appointment for 4:30 pm on a Friday for a silk press with Summer. I found parking right away and walked into the salon at 4:20. I was greeted right away by another stylist who had me sit in a waiting area. Since I got there 10 minutes early, I knew I would wait at least until my appointment time. Summer came to introduce herself to me about 15 minutes later and told me that she was running a little late. No problem. About 40 minutes later while she was washing another client's hair she asked me if I wanted a deep conditioning treatment and handed me the menu to look over. She apologized for the wait. Another 40 minutes later she came by and asked me what I wanted and had me sit in the seat for my hair wash. At this point it was almost 7pm when she came to "wash" my hair - if that's what you want to call it. Silly me to think that she was done with the client before me and that i would be out of there sooner than later. She placed the hot oil treatment in my hair and had me sit under a steamer. To my surprise two other clients who were waiting on her. She finally called me over to wash my hair at 8:30. Once she did that, she asked me to checkout. I had to checkout and pay before I even had my hair blow dried. Had the nerve to ask me if I wanted to include a tip all before I even received the service I was there for. The stylist then advised that she would blow dry her other client and then blow dry my hair then flat iron her other client's hair and then do mine. By the time I walked out of the salon it was 10pm. The stylist was really sweet and apologetic however this is a terrible way to run a salon. I would understand if I waited that long if I didn't have an appointment but I did. The stylist also mentioned that all of her clients came back to back and that was the reason for the delay however "it's always like this" and she is always working late. Seems to me they are overbooking. I can't even say she did a decent job because I could've given myself the same end result. There was also nothing about the way she treated my hair that made me feel like it was safer than a regular blow dry. Even if my hair came out the best I've ever seen it - I would not recommend this salon. The prices on the menu for the treatments are less than when you are checking out. It was my fault for not walking out by 6pm but I was trying to give this salon a chance in hopes of a better outcome. Don't waste your time. read more

I almost gave this 3 stars because of the waiting time, but the rest of the experience was pleasant. I visited the salon for a double process color treatment and wash & go. While I understand the color process takes a long time, it took 1.5 hours for me to be seen although I had a scheduled appointment. I stayed for approximately 7.5 hours. I was so antsy, I almost didn't stay for the wash & go. The color came out great and the stylists were nice and personable. If I visit again, I'll be sure to come on a weekday when it's not nearly as busy. read more

Yesterday I went at 10am for a color correction, trim, condition and style. After my color was done I had hydration. Then the stylist asked me to wait while she did someone's locks. I'm not going to talk about the woman getting the locs but I left at 4pm. Had I sat there I would have been there until 7pm. I was told I could come back for the rest of my services and receive a discount but I'm not interested. While the stylist personality was nice, the time management was poor. I won't name the stylist because I liked her but didn't like the treatment I received. My first time and last time there. read more

Excellent first experience at Jakari hair salon. Raquel is fabulous. Having had dreadlocks for 8 years and combing them out within the last year, my hair was definitely in need of some TLC. Ive never done a silk press and I had a lot of questions which she answered. Raquel really made me feel at ease and I knew that I was in great hands. I was so pleased with the end result. It seems as though they have a great team of very talented stylists. The salon is also very clean and spacious as well. I've definitely found my hair salon. read more

Hair type: 4c/4b very dense Length: slightly past shoulders Hair service: cut and silk press I have very thick resistant hair and was very apprehensive about getting hair silk pressed after going natural 2 years ago. Shanel was on time and ready to go. I was told to get a picture of the cut I wanted and she agreed with the style. I was washed and conditioned fairly fast and finger detangled. I thought I was going to have a deep conditioner, but I guess I didn't need one. Shanel was very warm, friendly and had great conversation. She blow dried my hair fast and flat ironed with 2 passes (which was fine for my resistant hair). She then cut my hair which I loved but I thought it was going to be cut more. Unfortunately, it was raining and my silk press only lasted a day. I knew that it would happened so Shanel suggested that I come back closer to my event, but couldn't make it in.
