Many new diner/cafes have opened in Broken Arrow over the last several years. The well-established favorites get overlooked as everyone rushes to the new eateries for a few weeks. Meanwhile the old favorites keep on cranking out delicious food to their loyal customers. Eventually the new gets old, customers sort things out and the strong performers survive. Jake's Café is still strong, holding the line since 1999. The food is good; as good as any diner/café that I have tried in Broken Arrow. Better than several. Conveniently located on the NW corner of Aspen and Houston St. The restaurant is on the south end of a row of brick red roofed business suites. Easy to spot. Adequate parking. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside the restaurant promotes a 50's theme. Pictures of movie stars relevant to the time cover the walls. Marylin Monroe dominates the space. True diner ambiance.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Seat yourself. Menus are delivered in minutes. Decide on your favorite breakfast while the friendly waitress fetches a drink of your choice. The usual for me. An all-American breakfast combination meal I use to evaluate the cook's skill. Cooked perfectly along with great service earns 5 stars. Perfection delivered today at Jake's, 5 stars! My wife spotted a new item on the menu board, "Banana and Pecan Pancakes!" One big one for her that smothered the plate. Thick fluffy, loaded with bananas and pecans and with a side of bacon. Check those pictures. Comfortable café, fantastic food and excellent friendly service.

A tasty and filling breakfast at Jake's was the perfect way to start a Saturday. I can never pass up fried okra and Jake's does it right. The omelette was huge and had lots of flavor. Hashbrowns were crunchy, and the biscuit and gravy was great. Server kept the coffee coming too, which is always appreciated :) My only deduction comes from the checkout process. We were charged twice for our meal :/

Veggie Omelette and western omelette.. the biscuits are really soft

Today was their redemption day. Again, our server was spot on great. My wife ordered the 7oz. Filet (medium rare) with baked potato and house salad. I ordered their "Famous" French Dip sandwich with fries. My wife said the steak was good, but a little more on the rare side. The potato was good and had the salt encrusted skin. She said the salad was good and it was accompanied by a very tasty croissant (which I stole from my wife). My suggestion is to provide those croissants as a gimme for every table, since no bread was served to snack on until the meal arrived. My French dip was loaded with shaved medium rare to medium prime rib. It should be loaded considering the price of $25 for a sandwich. The Au Jus was salty, just the way it should be. The sandwich was great. The fries were ok, a little on the cool side. Again, our server was phenomenal. She did not let a drink go dry and was not intrusive while we were eating. She would show up with the drink refills, then ask if we needed anything. She truly seemed like she loves her job. We're still not sure if we will patronize this establishment again, because you can get the same quality of food at Texas Roadhouse for half the price and unlimited, free hot rolls. YMMV, this was our experience.

Dan got the Mathis burger, which is a mixture of sausage and ground beef with jalapeños, fried onions, and cheese. I got the bacon cheese burger, and we ordered home made fries to split. About 15 minutes after we ordered, they told us they were out of homemade fries, so we got curly fries instead. The food wasn't bad but just not wonderful as I expected. The service wasn't bad but we did have to stand at the counter awhile before they could take our order. They told us they were out of homemade fries at least 15 after we placed the order, and they took our order to the wrong table. Shortly after we started eating, we heard someone else order homemade fries. I don't know if they got more homemade fries in that short amount of time or if that man had the same experience we did. The decor was unique. The restaurant is set off from the furniture store with a row of chairs, which customers can sit on if the tables are full. I enjoyed glancing at the furniture and wondering if we might want to do some redecorating. Something we really liked were the prices. Restaurant prices have skyrocketed this year. Not only are the burgers priced right, but they serve breakfast at last year's prices. I'm tired of paying around $15 for bacon, eggs, and toast. Next time we want to go out for breakfast, we are going to try Hardens. I'm bumping the review up from 3 stars to 4 just because of the price. It's a good value.

My wife summed up the meal and wrote the review with one short sentence. As she wadded up her napkin and threw it in the empty burger basket she said, "That was a damn good burger!" My opinion, the burgers and fries at Harden's are as good or better than most offered in Tulsa. Better than many I have had, that were rated as the best in Tulsa. (Excluding charburgers, charburgers are a different animal) We had cheeseburgers and the homemade fries. Big juicy patties flawlessly cooked on the flat top. The fries were perfect. Most restaurants don't prep their potatoes properly for homemade fries. The result, within minutes after serving you end up with a soggy, limp greasy fry. Harden's does it right. The large thick lightly coated fries stay crisp. The crunchy patches of potato skin add flavor to the already excellent potato sticks. The furnishings of the restaurant are immaculate and expansive. The styling is extensive and varied, ranging from contemporary to relaxed modern. Decorative art, colorful floor coverings, attractive lamps and vases complement the furniture. Grab your burger basket and drink, wander around until you find a comfortable couch or recliner. If you like to eat in bed, they are available. Whatever you like, put your feet up kick back and enjoy the meal!!

There is an abundance of wine to choose from. Our server was rushed (and they were packed) and I didn't get a lot of direction on the wine so I just ordered a white sampler and just asked for three dry varieties. The first one I tried (Collan) was not dry in my opinion. The Triple was drier but my favorite was the Fume. I really got hints of pinion in this final one and ordered another 5 oz. of it. We tried the avocado bruschetta to start. It was four big pieces of good bread but was more avocado toast than bruschetta. I would probably go with a different appetizer next time. We both tried the burgers. I went with the mushroom-gouda one. It was over done and not seasoned at all. The gouda was nice and gooey and the mushrooms were seasoned well. Fries were OK. The table next to us had a couple of the flatbreads and I would try those next time. Back to the service. It was OK but our server had a tendency to just show up at our table and just stand. We celebrated the patriarch's 91st birthday Sunday night. I knew from a prior birthday celebration we had there, that they don't take reservations. That means that if you have quite a few people in your party, you just have to take your chances that they can accommodate you! They do have a call ahead wait list, however it will only accept 6 people. If you have over that mark, you had better go elsewhere. It was a Sunday night, and we were meeting there, so I arrived early to register our party. Since I could not make a reservation, or get on a wait list, I was told that it would be an hour wait! I was hoping that maybe the estimated time would be shorter. It was not! We watched people come, eat, and go for two hours! When asked about the wait we always got the reply, we're waiting for the people to leave! What kind of an answer is that? With all the people that they seated during the TWO HOUR WAIT, they could have taken us. I guess that I should mention that this was the second time this has happened to us with a birthday celebration! It most surely will be our last! Unless, and until, they institute a policy of taking reservations (I would have been willing to give a credit card to hold one), or opening up their wait list, we won't be going to Cheddar's for another birthday!!

The hustle and bustle of Friday night dinner plans hadn't started yet and there was plenty of seating. We were seated and there were crumbs on our "clean" table. We were moved and the floor under that table was sticky. Our server, who never introduced themselves, came and took our drink and appetizer order. Our sodas came out flat. The server didn't charge us and replaced them with waters. Our appetizer eventually arrived, the spinach, artichoke dip. The parmesan on top was not melted, we removed it like a sheet of paper. We told our server, who said, "oh yeah, I should've told you that it is better when you take it home and microwave it to really melt the cheese then it's really good". Even if we did enjoy the spinach dip, which we did not, there aren't enough pita chips to eat the entire appetizer. Those would be an additional charge. During the appetizer conversation, I did put my empty water glass to their side of the table to make a refill more simple. They started to walk away without even realizing the nonverbal gesture I made as to not interrupt our conversation. I verbally asked for more water and they forgot about it. I did witness the "ah-ha" moment when they remembered they had forgotten. My wife's grilled salmon had no real flavor, sitting on top of a basic bed of rice. Her tabouli was lacking. I can't forget to mention that when her side salad arrived, the food runner simply asked, "is this yours?" It was slightly off-putting. I never thought about my dining experience being altered by the food runner, but "side salad with ranch" versus "is this yours" is a minor detail that can apparently affect the experience. The server didn't come by as often as I felt they should. They did their verbal checks with the appetizer and the meal, but didn't see them do any walk by checks, until I asked for the bill. My burger was nothing to write home about, but it was good. The fries were undercooked and the thousand island dressing tasted like Kraft dressing. I ate half my burger and my wife ate a small portion of her salmon. We paid 60$ for food we barely touched and we took none of it home. I would rather pay 60$ at Chili's or Texas Roadhouse. We take those leftovers home. I would like to say that I would give Bison another chance, but that won't be the case. Too many mishaps on this visit to make us want to return. My wife was very tempted to talk to the manager, but I was more ready to just pay the check, leave, and take this experience as a sign to never return.

We went on a Thursday afternoon at 4:00, so we didn't expect it to be busy. There were a few people there but not a bunch. We were promptly greeted by the hostess and shown to a booth. Our waitress brought our menus and silverware right behind the hostess. She asked if we knew what we wanted to drink and I ordered Decaf Coffee. My wife deferred to later once she knew what she was going to eat. The coffee arrived a few minutes later and I placed my order for the Belgian Waffle, 2 eggs scrambled, Hash Browns, and 2 Sausage Links. My wife ordered the Eggs Benedict and a side of biscuits and gravy and regular coffee. First before I forget, I am somewhat of a portly fellow. I carry about 70 pounds more than my doctor likes, and it's all right above my belt. Remember that the hostess put us in a booth, which usually is a challenge for me, because of my extra tire that I carry. But I was pleasantly surprised that this booth was spacious. It had plenty of room for us extra large folks without trying to move the table. The coffee, was good. Remember that I drink decaf coffee, so when I say it was good, thats saying a lot. I even asked the waitress if she had forgotten and brought me regular coffee and she assured me it was decaf. When the food arrived, I was so impressed by how good it looked, I forgot to take a photo, so the attached photo shows what was left when I was full. The waffle was the main thing I was after. I love waffles, and it's hard to find a good waffle. The menu claims they are Belgian Waffles, and I cannot disagree. They tasted like the Belgian Waffles I had in Paris, so I believe they are. The has browns normally don't rate a mention, but these hash browns were soft and not crunchy, and tasted like I expected hash browns to taste, from the first bite to the last. The eggs were scrambled well, which I would have preferred loose, but that's my fault for not specifying. I also ordered link sausage which was cooked as it should be. Next time I'll order bacon. The reason I avoided the bacon is that most places either burn it or leave it partially raw. Based on how the rest of my meal was cooked, I expect the bacon will be cooked right. I'm looking forward to my next visit already.
