The chicken-fried steak was not a chicken-fried steak, but rather a piece of tenderized meat like cubed steak, pan-fried. It was HEAVILY seasoned with garlic and too much salt. Hush puppies had too much flour, not enough corn meal. French fries were heavily seasoned with Cajun seasoning (menu did not specify this!). The steak and gravy got cold really quickly. Beignets were heavy, like Texas Roadhouse rolls. We will come back, but the lack of parking is a pain!

It is worth the short drive off the beaten path. The service was quite satisfactory. I ordered a CFS with 3 eggs over easy, German potatoes and a biscuit and gravy. The CFS was thin but very tender with a very mild flavor. Nothing too fancy or exciting but not disappointing. The biscuit was similarly mild and quite acceptable. Tender enough and fluffy enough to fill the role of a receptacle for the creamy and very lightly peppered gravy. If there is a stand-out item on this plate it is the German potatoes. Grilled crispy on the outside and soft inside these are a nice change from the usual hash browns or so often poorly done "home fries". I definitely recommend Hugo's if you want a classic diner breakfast in Claremore.

I ordered the Shepherds Pie and was disappointed that It consisted mostly of bread. I ordered a side of steamed vegetables, then added many of them to my Shepherds Pie (see picture). That helped, but not enough. If I were asked how this business could avoid closing, I'd say A) Either make it an Irish Pub or change the name of the restaurant, and B) avoid saving money but reducing the more expensive ingredients (e.g. meat) and increasing inexpensive items like bread and rice (in my wife's entree). I noticed that there were few customers during dinner time, and I now know why.
