We returned with our whole family to ride again at Jakes and we all LOVED our experience! Taylor was our guide and she made it SO much fun for us all and we had ages 7 to 60's on our ride. The horses were GREAT and knew what they needed to do, where to go and we all got a chance to NOT just walk, but trot a fair amount and even some horses jumped over a one foot log...which was really fun to witness. Jake does not care about you, he is extremely rude and only cares about your money. We are locals and have never dealt with such a rude, condescending business owner around here. We are so disappointed that he treats people the way he does. As locals we will NEVER go riding with Jake's and we will NEVER recommend him to any of our patients, friends, family, strangers, or enemies. Do yourself a favor and STAY AWAY. Friendly guide and gorgeous terrain This was our second time riding horses at Jake's. This time we had Jenna for a guide. She was so friendly, nice and knowledgeable! She was patient with new riders and made everyone comfortable. Jenna slowed when we needed it and kept us apprised of narrow paths to come. We thoroughly enjoyed our two hour ride through beautiful spots and scenery. Buttermilk was the perfect choice for our novice rider, Pacific was feisty but obedient and Journey was great for our expert among the group. You cannot go wrong with Jake's. We will be back in a few months for our next family trip to Montana. read more

We booked a 2-hour ride with Jake's company after a morning of whitewater rafting. We happened to be the only two people on the ride (we came after the high season). I ride once every other year and have done so in places tropical to city riding but this by far was the best, most peaceful and beautiful ride I've been on. Makes me wonder what you get to see and explore with the longer rides that they offer. Being that we were a bit tired from our earlier adventures we didn't get into too much conversation with our guide so we can't really comment on that. But our horses were fabulous. I rode Buffy and my husband rode Chloe who were both very serene and would go as told with the slightest adjustment. Only thing was Buffy liked to eat a lot so I had to keep correcting her on that - but I can't blame her - I would too if I got to traverse that area. Even if you've been riding a million times - but never in Montana - this is an experience you shouldn't pass up. read more

Knew coming out to Montana for the first time that we would want to go trail riding somewhere. As we got closer to our stop, I started searching for stables who offered guided trail rides in the mountains. I quickly found that in mid-April, most places were not open for the season. Incredibly disappointed, but determined, I kept searching and found Jakes Horses. I called and had to leave a message, hoping I'd get a call back and they'd have last minute rides available. Jake called a few hours later and I was ecstatic to be able to schedule an early afternoon ride the next day. My boyfriend and I showed up a few minutes early and watched two of the guides saddle up horses and get ready for our ride. They were incredibly friendly and I knew immediately this was going to be a fantastic experience. I had no idea just how wonderful it would be. Our guide Jo (I hope I got it right) and one of the other guides (whose name I can't remember, I am sooo sorry) were both talkative, funny and kind. They got us signed in, gave us quick instructions and we were off. Likely because of the time of year, we were the only two riders and we chose to do a 3 hour ride. The horses were gorgeous, sure footed, and easy to ride. The ride was nothing short of amazing. She led us up over 7,000 feet, stopping to point out the breathtaking views, and a few animals and took a ton of pictures that she sent to my phone at the end. At the very top, as we were taking in the view, my now fiancé pulled out a ring, proposing with the backdrop of the snow covered mountains. Jo knew before I did what was happening and took tons of pictures and videos. I cannot express what a fantastic experience this was. The entire trip she chatted with us, telling us about different trees we passed, the wildlife we could possibly see, and all sorts of other interesting facts about Montana. I cannot recommend Jakes Horses enough. We will be back to Bozeman and we will be returning to Jakes. read more

Katie took us up to "The top of the world" where we could see the beauty of Big Sky Katie was an excellent guide giving us the history of the land we were traveling through and making sure we were all safe and comfortable on our ride. I am from Texas, home of the Cowboy, and have never in my life experienced such a awful experience. I was in a group of 5 couples, my husband left before we saddled up to get a 12 pack for our trail ride. The guide was a little man, who admitted he moved to Big Sky a year ago and had only been riding for a year. He waited until the couples had paired off, except me who was waiting for my husband to return. This little cowboy then talked about the horses, telling us who the slowest was. He then pointed me out and said that any of the other girls could ride this horse except for me. He then laughed and told us to figure it out. (Referring to my weight) To say I was humiliated would be an understatement. I didn't tell my husband when he returned, as I did not want to ruin the trip. When I did tell my husband, after we got home, he was furious and wanted to go back and have a talk with him. I stopped him, as that encounter would have been disastrous. I sent a detailed email to the owner, who never responded. The only bright spot to this encounter was watching the so-called little cowboy get bucked off his horse. Animals know assholes. I would not have posted this if anyone had responded to my email, but since they apparently don't care, heads-up to the awful experience I had. FYI...even if I was overweight, which I would understand, the way the asshole presented it was completely uncalled for and embarrassing. Any REAL cowboy has a sense of decency, respect and knows what a gentleman is. I had to keep my husband from having a talk with the little man. Worst experience ever. Never experienced anything like this. read more

We had a really lovely time here!! They are pretty hands-off and let riders be independent on their horses which may intimidate newer riders. However, we loved it!!! They even took us off trail riding. Our guide Kelsey was attentive and looked out for us- even breaking off branches that were in our path. Fun for the whole family. We've gone on rides twice in the last 7 years and they were outstanding. When you call to make your reservation (which you should do in advance because they need to get the horses ready) you will be lucky if Jake himself answers. He is incredible dead pan and he's funny if you get dry humor. Our first trip was with 17 adults and the second was a mix of kids and adults. (The youngest in the second group was about 7 and had never ridden a horse). After saddling everyone up (no small feat) we rode along the stable and over the highway to amazingly beautiful land. (A car and driver went ahead to stop any traffic in anticipation of our crossing). Once across we trekked thru open meadows, forested patches, crossed streams, climbed hills, saw deer, and enjoyed the amazing scenery. The horses were really well behaved. Some were prone to eating along the way which only kept you from keeping up with the pack. There was a couple of exciting moments when a rider ahead of us lost their hat and it spooked our horses a bit. For an inexperienced rider like me it was a bit of a reality check (I.e. You can ride a wild animal and they may have a mind of their own) but the panic was short lived. The horses are vetted extremely well and fell back into line quick. If you are skittish I'd recommend a helmet. I went on this trip with some back issues. I just have a bad back. But I came out ok. You do use your leg and knee muscles a lot (and I actually have knee issues too) but I made it thru just fine. My thighs didn't want to work so well the day after but my back was fine. If you have weak legs and a weak back I'd opt for another pastime. We loved Jake's and will (hopefully) be back again some day read more

My family loved this. We are all beginners and this was no flat pony walk. This was a real ride where we climbed some hills and crossed a river and streams. Our guide Erin was great with my kids and really looked out for them. At dinner Julie does a mean steak and potatoes. This was a great experience and education for my kids. We all go a real taste of the country side and saw some spectacular views. I would totally recommend this for anyone. read more

We recently were trying to book activities for a group of us who went on a trip to this part of Montana to celebrate my birthday. I volunteered to do the legwork on getting a trail ride arranged. I called a number of guide services who were very helpful and accommodating, but who did not have openings the weekend we were going to be there. A couple of them suggested I call Jake's. When I did, a man answered the phone, was very rude, and acted as though my trying to give them business and pay them for a service was an irritant. Questions were not welcome, he made it quite clear. I asked if he could call me back to discuss when it was a better time, and offered to give him my number. He told me he had my number via caller ID and would call me back. That call never happened, nor did my subsequent message get returned. I had read on TripAdvisor and another website a couple of reviews of people who articulated a similar experience. They were accurate. I'm glad to see some of the reviewers had a good experience, it's a real shame we can't say the same. read more

We had our vacation in Big Sky this summer and horseback riding with Jake's was so perfect for our group of seven including our 7 year old grandson. RECOMMENDING!!! We booked a 2 hour trail ride for 13 people (5 people under the age of 18) with Jake's and I couldn't be more satisfied with the whole experience. We had several people who had never been on a horse before and the staff took so much time with each individual person (especially the kids) to go over everything and make everyone feel as comfortable as possible. I was so pleased with the owner and staff's patience with such a large group. When you have such a large vacationing group you have so many distractions going on and the group all over the place (physically and mentally). The staff never once acted snappy or inpatient with us. The horses were very relaxed and experienced on the trails. The trail guilds had knowledge of the area and were so pleased to answer all of our questions. I also was pleased to see how healthy and well cared for the horses were as a former horse owner myself. If you are planning a riding experience while in the Bozeman or Big Sky area I TOTALLY recommend Jake's. read more

We were extremely disappointed with Jake's. When we initially called and asked if they had a military discount they were very rude and said "they don't get a discount for hay". We were shocked but they are the most convenient so we rode. We also asked what the trails were like and again we received a rude response stating what does it matter if you've never been here. The guide was not informative and the horses just followed the trail. We would not recommend nor go there again. They should reconsider acknowledging our servicemen, police and fireman also. At least with a thank you if not a discount. I think they could use some customer service training as simple politeness goes a long way. I think they take their customers for granted and don't care about being accommodating. No Happy Trails for us. read more

Our family of 7 did the dinner horseback riding yesterday, and it was amazing! My 2 kids loved it, and have asked to go back for a 4-hr ride. Some of the adults had no experience in riding, and said it was great. Our horses had so much personality(Wayne, Ted, Booty, George, Lily, Loomas). The trails we went on had spectacular views. Our family of 4 very amateur riders had a great time on the trail ride with Jake's Horses. We rode through streams, up/down hills, through the woods and onto some grassy plateaus. It was a fun ride with a little trotting and trees to maneuver around to keep it interesting for us novices. The horses followed suit; no unruly animals. We took a 90-minute trail ride with Jake's last week during our week in Big Sky. Based on my research and other reviews, Jake's Horses came highly recommended, which was echoed by our friends who have a place in town and had previously ridden with Jake's too (and who joined us and our kids for the trail ride). There were 8 of us - 4 adults and 4 kids, ages 12, 11, 10 and 9. The horses were all beautiful, very calm and well trained. The wranglers gave careful thought into who should ride which horse, and also gave some short, but helpful instructions and tips before we started. The ride, which actually lasted almost 2 hours, brought us across streams, through a gorgeous meadow and up into the mountains. The scenery was breathtaking and nicely varied. Our guide, Stephanie, was very nice and patient and made sure we were all comfortable, especially the kids. She also arranged us in a nice row and took some great pictures halfway through the ride. My family and I booked a 2 hour ride. Our party included 2 adults and 3 children. They do not tie off the horses when you mount, so horses are free to roam. I was told my horse likes to eat. Once I mounted my horse, she freely roamed to eat hay, which the handler allowed. Earlier while we were there a horse trailer arrived with new horses on it. A handler unloaded one of the horses and proceeded to leave the trailer door open. My horse decided to get on the trailer, with me on top of it which ended up crushing me against the roof of the trailer. I pulled for her to stop tried to turn her around, and called for help beforehand. I ended up breaking my back in 2 places. I was 1/2 of an inch from a fatal accident or snapping my spinal cord. Never once did the owner check on me. One staff member made a comment oh how I don't have to go to the Chiropractor now. They chose to make a joke. Never once did the owners call to see how I was. When I got back home I thought that they may want to know what happened, so I sent the following email. After you read their response...let that make up your mind on going there for a ride. Oh you best believe they still charged the family full price for the ride minus my 5 mins on the horse. Kimberly C.
