**update** Since writing the review below we have ordered takeout twice. I can honestly say Jakes has some of the best pizza in the area. I haven't dined in since our first experience, but takeout seems the way to go. ************************************************* **Original review below** I have pondered writing a review all day, because I really hate to ever be negative, and I truly respect the restaurant industry and the fact that sometimes there's just an off day. I'm hoping we just encountered a day where they were short staffed because someone called out, but we our whole experience left us puzzled. We have heard nothing but great things about Jake's and have talked about trying it for weeks. Finally we decided today would be a great day to go for some brunch before Christmas shopping. My husband and I dine out frequently and we have had some terrible service lately, but we were hoping this would end the streak. We walked in and weren't sure if we should seat ourselves or wait to be seated. There were about five other tables of customers at the time. Three of those tables already had been served. We were promptly greeted and asked what we wanted to drink. There were no drinks listed anywhere so we just asked if they had a few beverages and they were brought out promptly. Then...we waited...and waited...and waited. It was over 25 minutes before our waitress finally came to our table. This was not the same person who brought our drinks. She came over and said "I'll be with you in a few minutes" and we waited some more. She was clearly in the weeds, but I couldn't figure out why. I was a waitress for 8 years and I know what it feels like to be swamped, but aside from one other table waiting for their food, we were the only table waiting for service. I watched the pace of the food coming out of the kitchen. One dish would be brought out while the others at the table would wait for their food. This lead me to believe maybe the issues were stemming from the kitchen. I'm still unsure. We finally ordered and our food came out about 15 minutes later. My omelette was first and my husband began eating my food with me while we waited for his. His chicken and waffles were brought out, missing the whipped butter and spicy syrup described on the menu. The waitress placed it in front of him and said, "Do you want syrup?" We both looked at each other because we thought it was silly. Who wants a dry waffle? Do people like dry waffles? Maybe they do, but I digress. She grabs a typical restaurant style container of syrup from another table and leaves. About five minutes later, she brings out the whipped butter and spicy syrup and says, "Here's some of the butter and spicy syrup that goes with your waffle" All in all the food was decent. I can't complain about that. Nothing to rave about, but definitely not bad at all. When we were done our server asked us if we wanted anything else. We said no. She disappeared. We were the only people there. She came out a short while later and began wiping down tables as we sit and stared at each other. She finally came back and asked if we wanted anything else...again. We asked for the check and she promptly brought it over. My husband and I have had four course dinners at fine dining establishments that took less time than this breakfast. No lie. We are not hard to please and we never complained once. I just decided to write this review because I was wondering if anyone else experienced anything like this or if it was just a fluke and we should give it another try a different day.

    Chicken salad club

I was at my doctor's office finishing up an appointment so I took a free moment to check Yelp for take out options nearby. The doc noticed and asked which restaurants I had in mind. I mentioned Jakes and she said it was a great choice. She pointed out that they used to have a storefront next to Iona Lake in Franklinville. I totally had forgotten! I used to eat there in high school. Aw. With that knowledge in hand, I called and placed my order with a very sweet lady. She said 20-25 minutes. I arrived in 20. My pizza was ready but the mozzarella sticks and chicken salad club were a few minutes more. Seating was available near the counter for people waiting. Nice touch! When it was all ready, she said "see you soon." It always cracks me up when people say that...but in this case, she's probably right. After all, the food was all really, really good! I especially enjoyed the plain pizza (small: $8.50). Usually I gravitate toward chicken salad and just have a slice, but I couldn't stop myself at one! I'd definitely recommend this spot if you're in the area and want some top-quality pizza.

    My french dip. Burnt roll

My friend orders from here all the time. So we placed a large order on a Sunday. I had the French Dip. The jus was dripping all over the bag. It was bland and flavorless. My roll was burnt. See pictures above. The roast beef, while plentiful, was dry and bland. Horseradish on the side was missing the "bite". It was only a bit vinegary to taste. $8.50. No chips, fries or any other accompaniment. My friend's Chicken Parm sandwich on a premium priced seeded roll also had a brown dry (toasted?) roll.

Their famous never frozen homemade onion rings & sauce.

I'm actually writing this review as I'm eating because I'm not sure I will be able to accurately describe my feelings about this place and its food once I'm done. From recommendation the first on the order was their onion rings. My thoughts: Crisp'd to perfection. Seasoned batter left a flavorful bite. The dip had you wishing they sold it separately. Order them! Their famous for it. The entrees were a Buffalo Chicken Cheese Steak and a Sausage with Peppers, Onions, and Marinara Sauce ordered from their Specialty Sandwiches list. First off, everything here is homemade and made with QUALITY food. The Buffalo Chicken Cheese Steak was full of real chicken breast, not shredded, and just the right combination of buffalo sauce and cheese. The Sausage sandwich had a very healthy serving of meat, peppers, onions, and sauce. Needless to say, this isn't the typical quick service restaurant. Food is made to order. Again, everything is homemade. The quality is tasted in every bite. The owner is present and involved in making sure premium service is delivered. I would recommend this place to anyone and certainly be back for another meal. Thanks for dinner! It was D-Lish!

Lunch time... mushroom slice with added spinach. I enjoyed this from beginning to end. Dont judge my style of eating pizza yall.

I love that dinner comes with soup, salad and that delicious garlic bread that's impossible to stop eating. My daughter raved over her minestrone soup. The first visit I had delicious creamy Italian chicken soup. I'd order extra just to take home. Appetizers of crostini topped with burrata and prosciutto were very good. Simple and tasty. Maybe next time I would ask for a drizzle of balsamic over everything. The husband inhaled his meatball sub and complimented the crispy and light rolls. Meatballs got rave reviews as well as the baked pasta. I tried the chicken cutlet with bruschetta and burrata. It was served on top of spinach and a side of pasta. Dessert of a dark chocolate cake was dense and sweet. Portions are huge. Really good service. Enjoyed this experience and felt our money was well spent.

This is the place to go nowadays to get bang for buck. With every meal, you'll get the best ever garlic bread (ask for more, they'll happily bring seconds); that creamy Italian soup is to die for - gimma a gallon; and a small spring salad with your choice of the usual dressing. For our appetizer, we split one that was a toasted crostini with a slab of creamy burrata and a generous sliver of prosciutto. It could have used a drizzling of balsamic vinegar but it was delicious. Came with 3 pieces. By the time my actual main entree arrived, I was fully stuffed. My evil plan worked! Load up on the freebies and appetizers, take a few bites of the main, and have a huge batch of leftovers. With a diet coke and tip, this was $42 and easily can be split into two very generous meals.

W O W We drove up to a humble building and entered into a welcoming and a very nicely decorated restaurant. I loved all the red "pops" for Valentine's Day! I flipped for the focaccia bread! It reminded me of Lamberti's on Haddonfield-Berlin Road back in the day. This was even better though - I "kinda" had five pieces lol! We started with salads that were super good! I barely like tomatoes but these grape ones were so tasty! Now onto the star ... LOBSTER RAVIOLI in a brandy sauce! This dish was AH-MAZING and one of the night's specials - from the tender pasta and scrumptious lobster, to the incredible sauce and two succulent large shrimp. The chef added some sun dried tomatoes in, per my request - absolutely delicious!!! My Sir was grinning at me! I couldn't stop ooh'ing and ahh'ing at the "symphony " of flavors in my mouth! He had Veal Parmigiana with a side of Vodka Rigatoni, that he loved (it's his go-to dish that he bases restaurants on). I cleaned my plate, and took the remaining brandy sauce home - this gold wasn't going to waste! Chris hooked us up with two bread more bread baskets because he noticed how we were inhaling it- we took the remainder home too! A treat was meeting Peppe and his wife (?) on the way out. What lovely and gracious people! You can tell that they genuinely love what they do, which is why their food is so damned good! We already talked about going back - my eye is on the Calzone!

We arrived around 3:45 PM without reservations and they immediately took us to an open table. Iced Waters were instant. Our server was very pleasant and she took our order. Bread quickly followed with two types served: Italian with sesame seeds and focaccia; however I was puzzled that it was served with a plate of hot peppers and onions in a juice. It seemed off but perhaps it's a Jersey thing. I've been all over in Italy and have never seen this. Olive oil would have been fine along with a splash of balsamic vinegar. Either way I skipped bread condiments. Next came the Fried Tomatoes topped with Lump Crab as an appetizer, but once again I had another head-scratcher, as this dish wasn't typical. First the entire dish lacked seasoning plus salt. Then red tomatoes were used and we all know what happens when you try to fry one. It turns to water after you cut it. The lump crab is what probably made this dish pricey but 3 thinly slices of a red tomato caught me off guard. Now for the final knock out: I ordered the Bone In Pork Chop and impressed that I was asked how Iiked it prepared? I said 145 degrees. She said, you mean well- done. I stated no, that would be in a range of medium. Lo and behold, it was fantastically preparation temperature, but it came topped with the same peppers and onions concoction that came out with the bread. I had no idea that this was a smothered situation. My broccolini was also a mystery. The mashed potatoes were mid. Now on to my daughter's chicken Parmesan: She said that it lacked flavor and had to add salt and pepper and also stated that the sauce was loose and there was too little of it. My wife enjoyed her Salmon. Jersey is cooking differently!!!!! I forgot to add: Underneath of my pork chop I discovered a mysterious piece of corn. I had no corn in my dish??????

On July 25th, my family was supposed to be celebrating my grandmother's 100th birthday. We had a head count of 51 people and a set menu. Very sadly my grandmother passed just two weeks prior but rather than cancel, we agreed to continue with the party to celebrate her amazing life. Everything went accordingly, the service was great, the food was okay but we were all just glad to be there together as this was extremely hard for our family. Obviously, the change in plans was discussed beforehand with the staff and the main coordinator Michelle. When our time was up, the bill was paid by my aunt and the receipt was given to my mother. When things settled down, my mother looked at the receipt only to find that we had been over charged. They charged us for 60 plates instead of the agreed upon headcount of 52 adult dinners at 31.95 per head plus 4 children's plates at 21.95 per head. We had a guest leave early so technically they only put out 51 plates. Again, this event was invitation ONLY so we had an EXACT head count. When the issue with the bill was brought up to Michelle there absolutely no apology and she said "Well, we have to go by the tickets from the kitchen!" Which is impossible since we only had 52 (minus 1) adult plates and 4 children's plates. Now, according to...MATH...that's 55 total. So why were we charged for 60 plates? In addition, the tables were already set for that exact amount of people. There was no attempt to make it right. No offer for even a gift card in the amount that we were overcharged. Nothing. Just a cold and heartless response to a woman who had just lost her mother. Michelle knew that this was supposed to be a 100th birthday celebration that had sadly turned into a celebration of life but she chose to respond with zero empathy as did the manager. In the end, there are bigger things to worry about and that will be the last time we patronize this establishment. If you are looking to host an event at Villari's Lakeside, make sure you triple check your bill but it would be best to avoid it all together. Kindness costs nothing and unfortunately that was not our experience. The only reason I am leaving 2 stars is for the servers who deserve more but they can take that up with Michelle.
