I live a mere 12 minutes from Villa Nuova and had never heard of it until a friend told us about them?! He gave us a generous gift card that we used tonight. W O W We drove up to a humble building and entered into a welcoming and a very nicely decorated restaurant. I loved all the red "pops" for Valentine's Day! Giovanni seated us and Chris was our server. Both were warm and friendly. We really enjoyed our conversation with Chris and he gave us a few special treats as "first timers." I flipped for the focaccia bread! It reminded me of Lamberti's on Haddonfield-Berlin Road back in the day. This was even better though - I "kinda" had five pieces lol! We started with salads that were super good! I barely like tomatoes but these grape ones were so tasty! Now onto the star ... LOBSTER RAVIOLI in a brandy sauce! This dish was AH-MAZING and one of the night's specials - from the tender pasta and scrumptious lobster, to the incredible sauce and two succulent large shrimp. The chef added some sun dried tomatoes in, per my request - absolutely delicious!!! My Sir was grinning at me! I couldn't stop ooh'ing and ahh'ing at the "symphony " of flavors in my mouth! He had Veal Parmigiana with a side of Vodka Rigatoni, that he loved (it's his go-to dish that he bases restaurants on). I cleaned my plate, and took the remaining brandy sauce home - this gold wasn't going to waste! Chris hooked us up with two bread more bread baskets because he noticed how we were inhaling it- we took the remainder home too! A treat was meeting Peppe and his wife (?) on the way out. I have been coming to Villa Nuova since the 90s, I literally grew up on this food! Linda and Peppy (the owners) run an incredible ship here. Peppy is the chef and he is constantly crafting wonderful specials that truly never miss. If you are looking for fantastic, authentic local Italian food, this is the place. Insider Tip: If you want to try something truly different, ask Peppy or Linda for 'Tom's Special.' I'll give you a hint: it's a legendary riff on a Chicken Parm... but I'm keeping the rest a mystery. What a great first experience at this Italian BYOB! A hidden gem, as mentioned by other Yelpers. We had a party of seven with no reservation and were promptly seated. They start you with A LOT of breads for the table. The garlic bread with tomato sauce was fantastic! For meals, we picked off the menu and evening specials. I had chicken/ shrimp / scallops in a tomato basil sauce over penne that was so good. Some of the others had the bolognese over spaghetti, Pomodoro Basilico, Crab legs, shrimp/ Mussels Pomodoro. Everyone raved about their dishes! We finished with some homemade, freshly prepared cannolis and tiramisu. The cannolis were incredible. I'd highly recommend if on the area and looking for good, reasonably priced Italian. The BYOB makes it even better. Staff was five stars from start to finish!!! read more

This place seriously exceeded expectations! The pizza came out hot and fresh with the perfect crisp crust and that gooey, melty cheese you hope for but don't always get. You can tell everything was made right. The wings were just as impressive--nice and crispy with a super flavorful buffalo sauce that's not your typical Frank's RedHot. It had a unique kick that really stood out. We also tried a hoagie and it was packed with meat--not skimpy at all--which is honestly hard to find these days. Everything was delicious, fresh, and worth every penny. We will definitely be ordering from here a lot more often! read more

I took a friend on a date in New Jersey to Villa Nuova Ristorante & Pizzeria and it was FANTASTIC! I wanted to make sure that the first Italian food I ate on the east coast would be authentic. The staff was so friendly in a down-to-earth way, putting up with my constant questions and feedback. It was a seriously wonderful experience. The joint is clean, quiet, and has plenty of seating. Parking was plentiful and the exterior was well-maintained. The bathrooms are clean and well-stocked. The staff is efficient and friendly, with a single server and their busser dutifully attending the patrons. The restaurant is BYOB, which disappointed me, since I wanted to enjoy a glass of red wine with dinner. That's on me; I'm not used to that. The complementary bread wasn't really anything special, but the pizza slices were very tasty with crunchy and soft crust that whet my appetite. The salad was fresh and what one would expect; I drizzled balsamic on it and enjoyed it as a palette cleanser. I asked the server for their recommendations and took her up on the stuffed mushrooms with crab, peppers, garlic, and butter. I inquired for the recipe, but apparently that's a secret. The mushrooms were cooked just enough to bring out their robust flavor while not being overcooked. The crab absolutely melted in my mouth; each bite was delectable. Slightly crispy on top, loaded with buttery garlic goodness best enjoyed with a spoon to sop up all the oils and butter. My stuffed shells were magnificent! The ricotta was so rich and creamy. The mozzarella melted perfectly, pairing well with the best red sauce this native Californian has ever tasted. I wanted to cry... I legitimately teared up while savoring bite after bite. I saved half of the entree, trusting that baking it in the oven wouldn't diminish its glory. The pasta was just the right level of firm... no overcooked army noodles and ketchup at this joint! I asked question after question, sharing my love for food and trying to gain insights into the cooking process. I used to work in restaurants and attended a culinary arts program in high school,. This entire meal was top-notch. The chef was classically trained and has quite the resume! I sent my complements and asked about desserts. Ultimately I decided against it, since they're not made in-house, but trusted that they would be high quality. No frozen treats were available, but the tiramisu and cheesecake were tempting options. As an openly transgender woman, it's important to me to feel safe and dignified: I'll admit that while the server had a hard time gendering me correctly, she was so respectful and kind. She definitely didn't mean any disrespect and no offense was taken! The owner actually went out of their way to correct her in front of the staff and myself. We even had a charming conversation after the bill was settled, discussing food, family, and fast cars. I told him that California Italian restaurant owners should wear concrete shoes and tour the Delaware... I can't believe the trash I ate back home. So fn goodt!!! read more

I just found this restaurant that a friend recommended. It was fantastic. Everything was fresh and just plain delicious. My wife had the spinach salad with chicken and I had piselle prosciutto with shrimp. So many places the salads are brown but not here fresh and delicious. read more

Absolutely wonderful! Such a hidden gem! The food is absolutely outstanding and the staff is so sweet and REAL Italian! Walking in and being greeted by their accents melted my heart and made me feel like I was listening to my grandfather talk. The Alfredo is amazing. The chicken parm is to die for, and they give you so much bread with you meal, but they give you mini tomato pie slices! We'll definitely be coming back every time we're in Deptford! read more

Had a dinner party here yesterday for my grandsons 20 th birthday and we were all blown away with the food and the service each dish we tried was better then the last and we ordered a lot of food for the table our waiter was wonderful so pleasant took the time to tell us about specials and his recommendations the atmosphere with the Italian music reminded me of being in my grandmothers kitchen on Sunday's with all the wonderful smells the laughing and that home feeling I just can't say enough about this restaurant my husband and I will be returning for dinner every time we are in town visiting my grandson at college . I'm sorry to say but the veal Francese was just bad the sauce was runny And so much lemon I could use it for a lemonade and the meal overall lacked flavor. The chicken as well lack flavor and was in great need of garlic. The soup was Pasta fagioli it was disgusting. It was a weird color nearly no pasta a white bean. I remember this pizzeria back when it was an old, dusty looking, square building. The looks in the inside was similar to the outside... Under new management and remodeled a couple years ago, the new owner turned this business into a pretty charming place to eat. My son and I stopped in late one evening for a pizza, just minutes before they were scheduled to close. The two men inside were more than accommodating when they stuck around a little longer to make our pizza to go. The pizza wound up being pretty good tasting. Plenty of cheese and toppings. More sauce than I am used to on a pizza. But considering that it was a really good sauce, it didn't ruin out meal. The dining room was pretty nice. All tables had.a table cloth and a candle on it. The menu was pretty large, but not an expensive menu. If the evening wait staff is as friendly as the owner was, it will be a good night out. read more

Villa Nuova is a hidden gem! This is the best Italian food around!! The restaurant has old school charm. The bread is to die for! they have both rolls and pizza bread! You get a choice of soup or salad and the dinner portions are very generous portions. Our appetizer was asparagus with chopped prosciutto, mushrooms and tomatoes in a glaze sauce that was delicious! My husband had the fried ravioli dinner with a cream sauce, which was a special, My friend had shrimp, clams and crabmeat over blush marinara type sauce and I had an amazing veal dish with spinach, crabmeat, sun dried tomatoes with a white wine sauce. The dishes were beautiful. It is a BYOB. I highly recommend this place. This place is owned by family, Peppe is the owner/chef and you can definitely tell. I will be frequenting here more often. The atmosphere was calm and quiet even with the other tables that were dining. Some restaurants have a bunch of staff zooming by your table. This place is a must. read more

This pizza SLAPS! (which is the new term the younger crowd is using for very good) I don't know how I've gone nearly a year living 5 minutes down the street without hearing about this place or trying it! Since quarantine my boyfriend and I have tried a lot of nearby pizza places and nothing compares. The pizza tastes fresh, the sauce is perfect, and the cheese beautifully covered our pepperoni pie. One bite and it had the perfect balance of crunch and softness. The flavor was immaculate! I'm honestly pained we haven't been ordering from here since we moved. They started out here, then Pepi D. moved it to the Oaklyn location for several years, then back to the original location where it now stands. But something is amiss... I remember this years ago in Deptford--the best Italian food in the area. It maintained the high standards in Oaklyn. Pepi would come out to our table and ask our young daughter what she wanted for dinner. She'd give him a list of what she wanted, and he'd custom make something for her. Oddly, she always described a Chicken Marsala-type dish. And it was exquisite. The restaurant today does not have the glory of its past. We were there for dinner at around 5 p.m. on a Sunday afternoon. The building itself is nice, pleasing to the eye. It was a bit cold. If I were just cold, I'd think it could be me. But my 19 year old was cold and the only other table of people all had their jackets on. The service is very good. The server came fairly quickly for our drink orders. This is a BYOB, and I did not B, so I ordered hot tea. It came out lukewarm. We were given adequate time to look at the menu. Rigatoni alla vodka was on the menu, but my daughter wanted it with gnocchi. This was no problem and the server didn't have to blink twice to customize the order. I ordered Eggplant Parmigiana & Pasta, and a side of meatballs. Both meals came with either soup or salad, so we chose the Escarole Soup with Beans. A gratis bread basket of two rolls and several pieces of pizza bread was also included. The soup was extremely salty and lukewarm. The rolls were dense, doughy and very good. The pizza bread was not too greasy and a very good, chewy texture. There were little chunks of garlic on it that upped the taste. Given the coolness of the tea and the cool, salty soup, my expectation bar for our entrees was lowered. I am pleased to say entrees were quite good. The meatballs were probably homemade. Though they were not my South Philly grandmother's meatballs, they tasted like someone's Italian grandmother's meatballs. Spiced perfectly, in sauce, and not dry. I would recommend them. My daughter's Gnocchi alla Vodka was excellent. The Gnocchis were not like little lead weights, but little light pillows, just the right texture, and covered in wonderful sauce, although even the sauce was a bit cool. These were among the best gnocchi I've tasted in my life. My Eggplant Parmigiana was good. I'll preface this by stating that no one's is as good as my own, but it's way too much work for me to make this. The eggplant was not oily (which is a peril of this dish). The eggplant still tasted like eggplant (a feat in itself) and the marinara sauce was good--not great, but good. The pasta was al dente and perfect. The portion sizes were diner sized. I probably have three meals worth of our dinners. The cost was excellent for the quality and quantity of the entrees. As stated, the lead in to the entree was disappointing; the entrees were not. I cannot be certain Pepi is part of this restaurant anymore--I'd say not. And that's too bad. They have the potential to be what they once were, but there are major flaws. Consistency throughout the meal is a hallmark of a really good restaurant vs. a hit or miss one. I'd like to see Villa Nuova Ristorante return to the sure thing it used to be. read more

I am truly disappointed that I have to give such a low rating, as every time we have ordered take out from here it was been fabulous; however, I would NOT suggest eating in. When we walked in, we were told to sit at an open table with black napkins. No one sat us, but we figured they were just short staffed. We got up and grabbed our own menus. Both waitresses looked at our table, but no one approached. After 15 minutes of them sitting other families and taking care of others arriving well after us, we walked out and left. The fact that this restaurant is a BYOB, makes it the most affordable place to eat "Italian" in this area The large dining room has plenty of space and the tables are not crowded together. The house garden salad which came with the entrees was FRESH and crisp. The bread on the table was fresh and warm and plentiful. Some people in our party chose to have the soup of the day and they raved about the depth of the flavor. The entrees were expertly prepared and HUGE! The poultry dishes came with two large pieces of tender chicken breasts. The pasta dishes were also HUGE. The Rigatoni Alla Vodka entrée was very pleasant with generous sun-dried tomatoes in a creamy sauce. The Eggplant Parmesan and Pasta entrée was incredible!! Pepe, the Chef, even came out to greet our party. The waiter, Tony was most attentive and never let our wine glasses get empty!! Last night I took a couple of family members here to eat as a thank you for watching my dog for a weekend. Unfortunately, the place fell short of expectations. The portions were big but the food was average at best. It is a BYOB but still got walloped with a big bill after the meal. The service was slow even though the restaurant wasn't very busy. I heard that the pizza was really good but I was in the mood for some snow crab. I found out the hard way that they only offer Maryland crab. To me those are too much work for the little thread of crab you get in the end! I digress... The restaurant was clean and the staff was friendly. Love this BYOB!!!! The food is delicious, the specials are reasonable, portions are large, and the staff is friendly. The inside is not much but you are guaranteed a good meal and a full belly. There is no corking fee either if you plan to bring a bottle of wine (I brought two). The last time I went to villa nuova, I had one of their shrimp and fish specials but I don't remember exactly what it was. It was good, creative and I really enjoyed it. If you have/bring children to this restaurant, they will be sure to enjoy their chicken fingers and fries as much as I did. Very delicious! All in all, definitely recommend.
