Ummmmmm. I don't get all the good reviews here. This is one of the worst 'authentic mexican' restaurants I've ever been to. The chips were average at best, kinda got mushy as you chewed. Worst experience. The waiter had an attitude.... probably because we we were the only colored people there. We called in and asked about the burrito special. The guy said that everything came with it. Me and my boyfriend know what a burrito is and what it comes with... even the chipotle MEXICAN grille down the street know how to make a burrito. The "burrito" had only steak inside the tortilla topped with some smoked sauce that we never asked for. With rice and beans on the side. I dont know if it's only because Caucasian people go there and maybe they don't say anything about it... but that was not a burrito! We then addressed our concerns and they said that's what their burrito was. Nobody apologized nor empathized with us. The waitress didn't say anything and asked my boyfriend if he was done... that's it. She then slammed the receipt on the table and asked us to pay at the table... mean while the Caucasian people had an option to pay at the table or at the register. I was so frustrated and felt racially profiled and discriminated i asked to speak with manager. I told him everything that happened and that we were having a bad experience. He then said that there was nothing he could do and said to next time READ. He didn't empathize with us nor apologized for the poor customer service. If you're black or any kind of color they will not respect you!! The waiter was laughing and smiling with everyone else except for us. When she came to our table she always had an attitude. I will never come to this run down nasty, bug infested business. If you're miserable that you are a waitress you should work at amazon where you are secluded from any kind of customer service because no one deserves that. Never again!!!! read more

I had to ask for everything from straws to napkins then it started raining and had to move to a diffrent table which they never cleaned off i did then they brought my mom the wrong dish and it took 4 employees to put it together that the inital waiter brought the wrong food then sloppily threw together a soupy version like 10 min later afterwards trying to rush it then the next morining I had the liquid shits so i had to thow out my boxers and sweatpants so dont go here unless you want horrible service and dissentary overall complete shit show ive never written a review before but i am beyond words with anger this was the absolute worst experience of my life i hate this place and i sure as fuck wont be back what a garbage establishment 0/10 read more

Excellent food as always, even when you are on the run and have to get it to go! The lunch specials are about the perfect size meal for me so I love hitting them for lunch. Chips and salsa are fresh and delish and while I am not a fan of gooey green stuff their guac is made tableside for those who enjoy it and it gets raves from my family! This is my favorite restaurant in the LaSalle-Peru area-- they have great prices for fresh, delicious food and HUGE portions (The fajitas usually last me 2-3 meals.). Just cause you have square plates doesn't mean you can charge $11.50 for three mediocre chicken tacos. Let's not even mention that bland "cheese dip" stuff that will cost you $4.99 for a 1/4 cup. And if you order a side of beans and rice, $5.50! Wowzers. Many years ago the service here was good and the food better. Now it's slower, not as friendly, and that nasty, refrigerated, tomato sauce salsa is slopped in front of you. There are better Mexican joints. Not many in the area, but some. (La Michoacána is so much better for lunch... get their guacamole. It's actual guacamole, not the bizarre liquid green stuff they serve you at jalapeños) I don't fault them for serving what they do, if their customer base wants that bland stuff. We were staying at the LaQuinta Inn that shares the same parking lot as this restaurant. When visiting from another city, you are unsure of where to eat especially if it's a restaurant that is not in your home city. I have to say the food here was very good and flavorful. The table side guacamole was soooo good. Guacamole is actually one of my favorite appetizers so whenever I am at a Mexican restaurant I have to order it. Beware of the inconsistency here. I regret to have to act this way, but Oh goodness how things have changed! Why three stars for my experience last time? Because four and five are earned from consistency. They are squandered from bad experiences. Well our last experience, a three star experience, brought us back when traveling through the area. The place was minimally full on a Monday night. Tableside guac was perfect again. However my dinner was wrong. I had a combo, the 28 I think because there was a picture on the menu of it at the top of the combos. It was supposed to be one enchilada, one burrito and one chiles relleno. All picadillo of course. However when it arrived, the entire plate had a huge ladle of ranchero style sauce over everything. The relleno was supposed to be covered with crema or chihuahua cheese. Possibly queso blanco at best...but no cheese was present, only a deep fried pepper literally swimming in what the waiter called "mexicana sauce". When I complained, the waiter said, that is how it is supposed to be. I asked for a menu and showed him the picture and he actually said, "oh that is a picture from another restaurant". Wow. So speechless. ....so next to the stuffed chile there was supposed to be a burrito. This was also completely swimming in the same sauce. When I complained about this the waiter said again, that is how it is supposed to be. REALLY? A burrito covered in sauce? Then if course said enchilada, which was if course, swimming in some brownish red sauce. So at this point if the waiter had simply apologized and said, "sorry our mistake" and offered to make another one I would have said that it is fine this time and ate it. As a rule, I do not send food back to be altered or accept a new dish of food after I have been given the first one. I abide by this rule in my home dinner service for guests. I provide a meal...I provide exactly the menu I specify. For fathers' day I promised 8 hour cherry smoked, grape jelly and brown sugar glazed ribs and I delivered fifty pounds of them to pleased guests. When I pay for a meal, and the menu is specified, not price fixe, I expect it to be somewhat close to what I order. After a previous review of the same cantina, management commented they put lengua and al pastor on the menu, however if it was available I didnt see them on the menu. By the time I spoke with a waiter, and then a captain about my food, my companion had funished her meal anyway and as a rule I do not expect others to delay so that I may eat. This was a business dinner and I managed this gracefully as such. However I had chips and guac for dinner. It was the last of my money this place will ever see. And I suggest you do the same! read more

This is my favorite Mexican food place to eat. This seems to be the Mexican food of choice in Peru. Tucked back out of the way on an access road. The staff is very attentive and polite. The food is good and is served fast and hot. Usually food like this leaves me a little upset to the stomach, but Jalapenos food sits well with me. I love the frozen margaritas, even though it tastes like a mix. One time I asked for mas tequila in the drink and they added the tequila and triple-sec to bring the alcohol content to a standard margarita that size. Mixes have very little alcohol content, and they knew that I wasn't driving. The person driving only had a cola. I look forward to stopping here when I am in town again. read more

In passing through the area, I got a chicken burrito to go and chips with guacamole. The burrito was big and it came with rice on the side. Guacamole is alright. Salsa is bland. Grilled chicken and refried beans in the burrito. Red sauce on top with a slight hint of mole flavor. Bland cheese. The best part of the meal was that it wasn't at all greasy! So I'm staying with a group at the Hampton Inn and we decided to walk over to this place because it was so close, and two pitchers of margaritas later confirmed that was a great idea! There is another place a little further down that wants to brag about their margaritas, but Jalapeños has it going on! I'm from South Texas, trust me. The food was excellent. We stopped in on a Saturday evening while travelling through the area. We used to stop at another Mexican restaurant nearby, but it is now closed, so we thought we would give this one a try. There were many empty tables once we got in, but the hostess was only seating parties in the order they came in, not by size, so it was about 20-30 minutes to get seated (we were behind a couple of bigger parties that took a while). Service was slow but friendly. The food was meh. The steak fajitas were tough and not very flavorful. The enchilada and taco were fine, but nothing to write home about. The tostada was soggy, not crisp. It is nowhere near the quality of your average Mexican restaurant (and we seem to eat at alot of Mexican restaurants). Then we had to wait in a long line to pay. When we travel through the area next year, we will be looking for a new place to stop. read more

Me and my wife door dash the last week of November of 2020 and it's has been 3 consistent times where the drive thru people have been disrespectful when I ask how long it will take because our app sometimes tells us the order is done or a drop off time that it needs to be dropped off or it affects our pay which interfere with our family badly due to COVID and me losing my job and searching. I get told one time then I wait double come back in line then get told with attitude an even longer time and shown a receipt with attitude that I'm rushing which I'm not I'm the one being patient not yelling but closing the drive they window while I'm asking and trying to come to a agreement on a time or where I should park I just get a walk away. I expect alil more respect from local company's because these customers and the onetime delivery and accuracy is what is keeping both our company's in business. We did not expect to find a terrific Mexican restaurant right off the interstate in Ilinois, but Jalapenos was a great surprise. The food was fresh and delicious, not just standard fare. The food always comes out fast and is piping hot. You can comfortably eat there with a party of 2 or 8 and your service will always be just as fast and friendly. They do have good drink specials. First time at Jalapeños, meeting family that live in the area. First, the waiter was excellent! He had a great personality, which you don't find these days, joking with my 7 yo about paying the bill. He handed him the bill and told him that he could work in the kitchen if he forgot his piggy bank in a nice-jokingly way. Second, he was prompt with drinks and food. Finally, the food was delicious. We have been coming her once a week almost for the past year. We have been willing to wait in line for the food. Always amazing. Tonight we had our first horrible experience here and are hoping that it is an isolated experience with a new cook. My husband ordered the fajitas and I ordered a combination with a chalupa(fried taco). Received the food and my husband said the fajitas tasted different. My food came with a tostada instead of chalupa( also covered in guacamole which was one of the menu choices). I asked the waiter and he said that the cooks didn't know how to make a chalupa.(which is on the menu, not covered in guac). I didn't eat the tostada covers in guac which is (1) not what I ordered and (2) I get sick from avacado. The waiter said they would take that part off the check. I when we checked out, the manager argued about taking the food off. We paid and left. Very disappointed with this visit here and will probably not be back next week because of the service this time. read more
