This is one of the worst organizations I've ever encountered. Back in the 1950s, when I was 8, my parents paid for a swimming lesson for me. The group was too large. The instructor barked out inaudible instructions that were useless to beginners like my and my friend Robert. We also had to swim in the nude, with our parents in the bleachers--very embarrassing, The authoritarian officials held the ideology of early 20th century nudism movement, that clothes were unhealthful, and forced boys (females were barred from the Y then) to practice their dogma. As an adult, I swam laps there in the 1980s. If you forgot your membership card, even though the personnel recognized you, you'd be fined. The pool always overheated, up to 90°F, to make money from parents who brought incontinent infants into the pool. When I politely complained about the heat 1 time too often, the nasty director, Mr. Christian, suspended my membership. Men facing hard times with nowhere else to live and had to take residence in the Y received no support. Once when I arrived to swim, a resident had jumped out of a 3rd floor window, and his body was splattered across the sidewalk. I wouldn't be surprised if this hadn't been the only time. At the age of 75, I've noticed that organizations that hired helpful, responsible officials decades ago continue to do so today, and organizations infested with jerks continue in that mode decades later. I'd be stunned if things had changed since I was last there. I strongly urge you to find other venues to exercise. read more

I LOVE the YMCA it's like my go to pool/gym it has vending machines 2 gyms and a HUGE pool there's even a sauna the locker room! The Quality is there is amazing the life guards are nice and friendly. It's my FAVORITE pool and it's like I'm never gonna betray anyone he ymca. I value this pool forever and it will always be my go to pool! There also games near the life guard that you can play with your friends and family and also things to help you stay afloat. So I believe that the ymca is amazing idk about other people but I think it's amazing! read more

Truly disappointed in this Y it was my first gym membership I got thanks to my dad. I never remember this place being glamorous. But I do remember the steep price for this place fast forward 15 years later I've worked for the YMCA in LA for two year I no longer work for the company. But I still remain a member in the Los Angeles. I was visiting my family in queens so decided to stop in and bring a guest. The front desk staff is not welcoming at all nothing about his attitude is inviting,and looking at the membership price $120 a month I would expect at least dmv service attitude. It's sad because you have hard working black families spending minimum of hundred or more to use a facility monthly thats offering customer service that animal don't even deserve! It made me regrets bringing my guest to this facility. read more

I have been coming here for about a month now. I mainly go to the group classes, and use the pool for laps. Only a few times i have used the treadmills, eliptical, etc. As for the other reviews here I haven't been hit on inside or outside the building. Jeleni is awesome at zumba and the pool is nice first thing in the morning when they open. they have a lifeguard there all the time too and thats a good peace of mind. Overall this place isn't too bad as long as i get my laps and zumba in, Im happy! read more

This is the worse YMCA I have ever been to! It looks nice but that's it. I joined for my entire family to take swim lessons and use the gym. My daughter was never able to take private lessons because no one ever called back to schedule her lessons. I called numerous times to schedule and then complain and NEVER got to speak to the aquatics director. My youngest got to take the "Parent and Me" classes and the instructor never had a plan on what to do. Everything was like okay umm let's sing this now. Every week was the same thing, boorrriinng. The last week of class the instructor didn't show up nor did the Y have a replacement or give a credit for the class. This Y is very unprofessional, no one knows anything. This location is convenient for me but I will NOT be returning again! read more

I have been trying to get a straight answer regarding Afterschool options for days. No one seems to know anything and no one calls you back. You get sent to mailbox to leave a message and than nothing. You call back and it repeats. Doesn't invoke confidence in having them watch your kids. read more

Absolutely the worst WiFi I have ever used. Full strength signal & then suddenly nothing. Slows down communication & tasks. Took me 10 x longer to complete the simplest of tasks. Needs an upgrade guys! read more

I am a member with my family I do like the place and the activities Is upsetting that it say Monday and Wednesday there family run in the gym When they change it to basketball On thanksgiving they have fellowship event it says for all members and than it was changed just for the residence members On Christmas it said a Santa Claus event and they also canceled A lot of the staff don't know anything or what's going on They need to get on the same page read more

This is more of a review towards the staff of the establishment rather than the quality of the service offered. I applied for a position and I have honestly never been had a job interview with such a rude, unprofessional, and disorganized staff. The amount of attitude I received was both uncalled for and unnecessary. The only reason I didn't follow through with them is because I couldn't imagine working with such a disrespectful staff. To be fair, I did not interact with the entire team so there might be some gems in the bunch but the rotten ones truly ruin it for everyone else. I'd recommend the good ones to find employment elsewhere. read more

I am not a member, but have taken swim lessons here twice. Some reviewers have mentioned the staff is not that nice, but if you want to go for a tour, ask for Tony to guide you. The facility is quite big and spaced out with everything you'd expect in a gym. My only complaint is that both times, there were cancellations for a week or two of lessons. However, if you want to learn to swim, Calvin will help you - he is incredibly patient and encouraging. read more

So far so good. My children took advanced swim lessons during the summer. I was used to going to the LIC YMCA. The lessons in the Jamaica Y and the LIC Y are great. No problems from both. The teachers are patient and work well with children. I was impressed with the Jamaica YMCA. The pool is bigger and the faciliites in general are kept very clean. The staff is very polite and helpful. I really enjoy this Y. I decided to use my membership to go to this Y since it is closer to me. It's great. read more

I transferred from the Long Island City YMCA as it was a bit further out. BIG mistake. First, the billing people were completely clueless at the Jamaica Y! I had to keep going back for them to adjust my records and I had to save all my receipts each time. Furthermore if you forgot to bring a lock for your locker, DO NOT CHANCE it at this Y. Your stuff will get stolen guaranteed. I learned this the hard way. Don't bother bringing it to the court either, several people lost items in one day there. Just to give you an idea, they have a "security" guy guarding the lockers.. He's useless. The court is small, and good luck getting a game on Fridays.. The one decent thing I will say is that the equipment is in good order, despite the building being a lot older. But if you value security , do not go to this Y, find another one, even if that entails traveling a little further. read more

I've been coming to the YMCA for about two months now. When I received the tour the people were not welcoming. I went to the Welcome Desk and it was pretty much everyone looking around to see who was going to offer to go since no one really wanted to do it. I got a tour from a Hispanic girl who kept on stopping to talk to people and every time I asked her a question she was too busy catching her breath or looking at her nails. A big turn off. The price a month was def. worth the work out so I decided to join until I get fed up. The people that make the time exciting is actually the members who have the same goals as you and the group exercise instructors. I've tried the Zumba classes with Sam... she is fun and full of energy. And my favorite instructor so far is Jelani Maleeq, he is stern, puts you to work while still being funny and creative. The classes is the only good thing about the place because the customer service is absolutely horrid. I guess the youngsters they have working behind the desk are tired of the boring AS400 system they work with. If you aren't picky about the setting and are focused on getting a good work out ONLY. Then you can accomplish anything, anywhere. The instructors are awesome... I'll give them that. They'll work your booty outttt! read more

My daughters attend the Aquatics program at this facility so this is a mixed review. My wife and I find that the quality of instruction is great the instructors are competent and the kids in the program have a great time. However, dealing with the lady at the registration desk is nightmarish. "The Desk Supervisor", as her shiny tag states has the most aggressive nature for no apparent reason. Everyone seems to tip-toe around her and if you match her attitude with a similar one she actually gets offended. I am seeking means to notify her superiors of her actions but unfortunately that is difficult to do especially when she seems to be the person of most seniority. If there were only a way to circumvent her the experience at the Y would be much better. She is definitely bad for their business. Who wants to deal with that? read more

This place is pretty sketchy. I used to play basketball here when I was younger when it was nicer. But due to the weirdos that live here and/or hang out in front of the building it makes the place look unsafe and seedy. Also the men that hang in front of the building hit on women that walk by, so I can only imagine the harassment that goes on inside when a woman in stationary. The staff is ok some people are more professional than others. Also memberships and classes here are pretty expensive and for what! The amenities are either lame or out of date, and this place is small. read more

I had been a member with this YMCA for almost 8 months. Over three fourths of the time I have been in the pool swimming laps. I have recently learned the chemical maintenance has not been handle appropriately and either the concentrated chemicals are not poured in with an healthy wait time, like less than 10 minutes before a lap swim or when there is fecal matter/diarrhea found in the pool, appropriate shocking chemicals were not used at all and children were then permitted to get in and swim. I have spoken with different levels of management and they have denied this, although I witnessed both occurrences. Having been a life guard and swim coach myself historically, I knew which questions to ask and when I did, there was a great deal of nervous tension and denial over both of these incidents. It is my hope with this review and with the critical conversations that took place, the maintenance and knowledge for healthy pool care has been applied on a regular basis. There also has been several times roaches have been in the women's locker room and the sauna does not consistently work on its own. I hope this Y steps up its game for the betterment of the community to uphold the YMCA mission statement. I no longer am a member there. read more

My son and I joined this YMCA in Sept 2014 and I must say it is kept Clean (if a guest leaves a mess behind & you notify staff it is rectified Immediately), and staff is courteous & kind. On weekends the front desk employees are indeed younger yet I have never witnessed inappropriate or unprofessional behavior. I initially had a Great deal of concern regarding my son's welfare while there due to the fact that this building also houses adults on one side of the building, but All staff members are vigilant and there is (so far) no negative crossover between Y facilitiy attendees & housing facility residents. As with Any public facility use, an adult should be aware of their surroundings and vigilant with regards to their child's safety and well being. Quite frankly, there is a sign that reads, "All children under 12 years must be accompanied by a parent". The gym equipment is new, clean and guests are courteous to one another - pretty much like most gyms. It is a very nice place with some very good programs for the entire family - a place where there is actually something for everyone in the family to participate in :) read more

I have been a member of this YMCA since 1976, my primary reason for still attending is the convienience of location and hours. The membership has changed drastically over the years from mostly male to now I believe mostly female. The place has numerous programs for children and I too bring my four year old nephew for karate and swimming classes. I have not seen any harrasment of women young or old in front of the building. I know many women who work out there regularly and none have ever complained of harrasment inside or outside of the facility. If they were being bothered I am sure thye would not be re-newing there memberships yearly. I've taken spin at few places in Manhattan and Queens. Sammantha's spin class at the Jamaica Y is top notch and her Zumba class is AWESOME!!

This YMCA is the worst. Listen to me now, the cardio machines, and strength training machines are up to date and good. The pool is miniature and nasty, the basketball gym is small, 2 courts, and it smells nasty, plus if you look on the security guard's computer you will often see roaches there. I mean it is a decent place if you are 14+, because you can get a good workout, and if you attend some programs , you can make some friends. But, This place is part of a HOMELESS SHELTER. If you have a job or school, you would probably be there at around 4:30 pm, but go during the early afternoon hours, and the place/machines, are used by bums. It is not the best ideas to leave your stuff around the place, it will get stolen. Also the area around the place is very very bad, there are always bums outside. The place is small, and unclean, so I suggest trying another YMCA, such as Long Island City, Dodge, or any other. read more
