Wanting to have some variety, I sought out some Caribbean cuisine. I remember hearing about one called Jamaican D's. So my brother and I decided to head over to see if what I heard was true. I'm happy to report, it was very very good! Some things to note: They take cash only. They have an ATM inside just in case, but make sure you have cash only you before you go. Make sure you pay attention when traveling to this establishment, as there are many intersections, one way streets, and streets that go from two to one lane. Also, there may be someone who will ask you to get them some food. Once we parked the car, we heard the reggae music coming from their front door. You can't miss it. The menu is on the wall, as well as being taped down to the counter by the order window. If they're out of something they will let you know before you order. When I went they were out of oxtail (a highly sought after dish in Caribbean cuisine). I had the jerk chicken with collard greens, white rice, and macaroni and cheese. My brother ordered the fried whiting, but I guess she didn't hear him correctly (trust me the music there is quite loud inside even though it's even louder outside), because he got the same thing I did. Now, we drove home, the car smelling amazing, and I forgot to take some photos for this review. But even so, I will definitely be back. Not the best of the best but decent enough, if you really want Jamaican food and everywhere else is closed. The portions are small, the beef patties aren't that yummy and always dry. Customer service sucks. And the rice is usually dry. read more

I've been coming to Jamaican D's on and off for years. It's a very small location that can get very very busy and the street parking is very bad. People often double park and block you in. it is my suggestion to park away from the store for and walk up. They sometimes have a truck outside where you can place your order if you don't want to go inside. I normally get the jerk wings and they're usually pretty good. Their sides are not bad as well. I do love how they give you a good amount for your money. Most time the workers are very nice and Accommodating. So we were chilling on my front porch today because it was beautiful out. All that yip-yappin' and jaw-jackin' got us hungry. Earlier we were talking about really wanting Caribbean food today. There a place a stones throw from me that I like but I was feeling super comfy and unwilling to walk the 20 minute round trip. So we jumped on Grubhub. This place was one of the top so we both got the jerk chicken meal. $19 each. The other place I like round the way is like $12 so I was like Ugg this kinda sucks. When I got it and tried it though I was not upset. This food was great. The jerk chicken has a little sweetness to its BBQ which is my jam. The rice and beans were a little spicy. Great together. The Mac and cheese was awesome. The food is two meals worth. Also they delivered super quick and had their own car! Damn this place must be making bucks. Yo man! This Jamaican restaurant is da bomb. Although the restaurant is a take out and you can't delve into the tasty items on the menu, the food is hot enough til you get home. This is my second time trying the food and they're still batting 100. The oxtail is plentiful and scrumptious and barbecue beef was so tender. I've been to Jamaica a few times and have eaten Caribbean/Jamaican food from California down to Florida. Jamaica D's was recommended to me when I moved to Philly, and I first got the chance to try them out. Impressive use of what they have to make solid food. Let me explain. Jamaica D's is a small establishment in North Philly that gets plenty of love from all over and considering how small the establishment is that isn't a surprise; many small restaurants tend to pack big flavors. I went ahead and ordered the Jamaican jerk combo alongside the BBQ jerk with sides of the classic rice and peas, macaroni and cheese, greens, and sweet potatoes. The food was plenty and flavorful, but it just was missing that Caribbean/Jamaican flavor all around. What makes jerk chicken is the grill/cooking device that often gives off large quantities of smoke that exemplifies how the meat and seasonings interact with the grill to create a flavorful and masterful taste. Jamaica D's is under an apartment, so this cooking technique could not be mastered by any means. Additionally, their "spicy" sauce was not spicy by any measure, but the sweet potatoes were indeed sweet while the macaroni and cheese and rice and peas complemented the jerk chicken well. I'm not sure why the restaurant has "BBQ Jerk" as there is nothing Jerk about it. It is plain old BBQ chicken. Jamaica D's is really missing that Caribbean flavor, and though they cannot obtain the equipment to give the chicken its true color and smoky flavor, they could try changing their seasonings/marinade and "spicy" sauce to start. I love Jamaican food. It's definitely in my top 3 favorite cuisines. I normally order oxtails whenever I have it but I was in the mood for something spicy. My fiancé & I both ordered the medium spicy jerk chicken with 3 sides for $13 and my daughter order the small BBQ chicken with two sides for $11. Love it!! The place is cash only so make sure you plan for that. There's also an atm instead of you forget. Fast service. Friendly workers. The portion sizes are really good. There isn't a parking lot so prepare to find street parking. We found a spot right across the street & didn't have to walk far at all. There's no dining area, all orders are to go. the mac and cheese is was a 10/10 so good. the curry chicken was also really good but the gravy on the rice was extremely spicy. My only issue is the consistency, you never know what your going to get with the spice level. The last couple times I had it, it wasn't that hot but this time it was almost un enjoyably hot. I am absolutely obsessed with Caribbean food, and I was desperately searching for the best place around Philly, and the unanimous decision was Jamaican D's. I came on a Sunday around 4 pm, and there was already a massive line for it! The small entrees come with two sides, and the large entrees come with three sides. I got the large Jerk Chicken platter with collard greens, rice and peas, and steamed cabbage, all for $16. This is a massive amount of food for such a good price! The chicken was literally fall off the bone tender, and spiced perfectly! The rice and peas sat underneath it and soaked up all the juice from the chicken. I literally couldn't stop eating it! The collard greens and steamed cabbage were perfect sides with the chicken and rice. They were super flavorful, and were a nice light side to go with the chicken! My first bite slapped me in the mouth! I ordered stew chicken, rice & peas and cabbage. And a side of plantains. My boyfriend ordered the bbq jerk chicken, mac & cheese and greens. He mentioned that he hadn't had food that authentic since he'd been to Jamaica last. I'm from West Philly. Yes, it was a bit of a drive and the neighborhood is a bit rough, but the restaurant seemed to be pretty efficient and the employees were nice. The in-store restaurant was for picking up phone/mobile orders. Their truck was right out front accepting walk up orders. There was food galore! The portions were great, and overall, I just don't have any complaints about my food or service. Not sure if I'll drive back up that way, and I've had other Jamaican food that wasn't so memorable. Place has gone downhill and looks dirty and unkept. My Mac n cheese and rice was horrible. The rice had a funny rancid smell like it wasn't fresh. My chicken didn't taste fresh. I'm sad because the food used to be delicious but now it's poor quality. Oxtail!!!! Awesome!!! Just as good as the place I first had Jamaican food somewhere in West Chester! The portion is good! Small for $15, large for $17. Lots of oxtail and lots of meat on it instead of just bones like the one place on Old York road. I came there on Monday around 6pm, the place was full. I came again today around 1pm Thursday and place was full. Oxtail and goat curry are only available from Thursday through Sunday. read more

They use to be a good restaurant but because they became popular and start cooking in bulk for all the trucks the flavor is not there for me and its not authentic anymore.
