I came in for lunch on a solo date and asked if I could be seated outside. Although there were open tables available, the staff seemed a little reluctant and initially offered me a seat at the bar. I preferred to sit outside, so I was eventually able to grab a table and a menu. It took a little while for someone to bring water and utensils. By the time they came over, I was already ready to order. I ordered the bistec encebollado and was impressed by the portion size! they give you a generous amount of steak. Unfortunately, the steak had quite a bit of fat around it, which isn't my favorite. When the food arrived, the rice was packed into a small cup, which made me think everything would be served hot. Unfortunately, none of the food was warm. Everything was room temperature and lacked flavor. Because it took a while for my meal to arrive, I got the impression that it may have been sitting out before being served. I ate it as it was because I didn't want to wait any longer. Taste-wise, the steak needed more seasoning, although the beans were good. Overall, the meal was average. After finishing, I asked for both a to-go box and the check. About 10 minutes later, the check arrived, but no box. One employee, William, really stood out. Whenever he stopped by, he was attentive, friendly, and on top of things. I appreciated his service and how proactive he was in checking on guests. Overall, the service had some delays, the food temperature was disappointing, and the flavors were underwhelming, not sure if I'll try this place again. read more

Mixto has always been one of my favorite restaurants throughout the years and I'm so happy the quality and food hasn't changed. Came here with a few friends and had to visit due to being in the area. First off, their happy hour deals are amazing. I got a red sangria for cheap and then we were promptly sat for our table. The red sangria was super flavorful and worth the price. Service was great. Our waiters were super attentive and fun. We had a blast learning background on them and they were great with our orders. For food, I ordered the Churrasco colombiano with garlic shrimp which was delicious! The steak was cooked to perfection and really flavorful. I also ordered a side of rice and beans which were great. My friends really loved their food too! We also got the ceviche for an appetizer, I loved it but I wish the portion was bigger for the price. The ambiance is amazing and perfect for any occasion. The restaurant is a good size so it's perfect for any party situation. I definitely recommend! read more

I was in the area and I was hungry so I decided to go to Mixto. When I was seated, I was a little surprised that they had an IPad as the menu instead of a physical menu. My waiter was very informative and helpful with my questions about the ingredients of the dishes I was interested in ordering. He gave me recommendations based on my preference and dietary restrictions. I appreciated how he highlighted authentic dishes. I ended up ordering a chicken empanada and a beef empanada (made in house), and they were delicious. I preferred the chicken empanada over the beef one. Then, for the entree, I ordered the Ropa Vieja. They server recommended getting a side of the hot sauce/salsa and to eat the sauce with the rice and side of beans, or eat the beef with the hot sauce/salsa, which gave a mild but slight kick to the food that I enjoyed. The beef was a little dry but the hot sauce/salsa made up for it. I would come back again to try the brunch :) read more

Came during a Thursday evening. Happy hour started at 5pm. I had the pincho steak. These were just okay. The Chicken empanadas were really good, the cheese empanada was just okay. They had other HH items which included food and drinks. My friend and I had a pitcher of the caphrihanna. It was just okay. I had the Steak with garlic shrimp. $46. This plate was HUGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. I had more than enough to take home. My friend had lambchops and risotto. The risotta was divineeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I want some RIGHT NOW. Do they deliver to MD?!?! We had a shot, and shots are delivered in like champagne flutes with lime slices on a wooden board, with salt sprinkled on it. 1 Bathroom stall downstairs. Upstairs bathroom had about 3 stalls. I have been a long time patron of Mixto. It has gone downhill and it hit rock bottom when I went on June 4. The service was horrible. The drink orders were incorrect. I had water spilled all over me with barely an apology. There were no place settings and the food wasn't up to standard I had in the past .with all the new beautiful restaurants that are opening up all over Philadelphia. It's the empanadas for me! We stopped by yesterday for drinks and some bites before heading to see Hamilton! It was around 5:15 and we were told they had happy hour at the bar until 7. Service here is good. Everyone is attentive and friendly! The happy hour menu is nice. They offer $25 half pitchers of margaritas which is easily shareable for two. We did the classic margarita but for me it wasn't that strong! We ordered a few apps - empanadas (chicken) and it was really good. The guacamole was ok, and it came with a few plantains. We weren't starving so we split an entree - pechuga de pollo with the lemon butter sauce and a side of rice and beans. Was tasty! If I'm in town again I would visit here again! read more

A family favorite for us. Beautiful al fresco dining when the weather allows, and a warm and welcoming ambiance inside when it does not. Currently decorated for the holidays, it's beautiful inside and out. The service is great, food is great, plenty of gluten free options available for my husband. Mixto Restaurant offers Cuban, Latin American, and Caribbean cuisine at a convenient location near Washington Square. ---- Highlights: The restaurant feels modern and sleek and was very welcoming of an outside cake for our group's (10 people) birthday celebration. However, while our food was in great portion sizes, both the flavor and our service were lacking. ---- For my large party at brunch, Mixto was accommodating to a few latecomers. We were seated by the door, and this placement was not ideal as a wind tunnel is created every time it is opened, which blew strong wind into our faces and knocked over our napkins, both of which were unpleasant. I had the Colombian breakfast (Calendtado). The steak was both well-cooked and well-seasoned but the arepa felt very dry and overcooked! As a general tip, Mixto adds a 2.34% charge to your bill for usage of debit/credit cards. So I would recommend bringing cash, except...my party had a very difficult experience paying in cash, with one of the servers fighting us saying we were short one dollar. And even though we counted in front of them (for the correct amount), the problem was not resolved until a manager counted and indeed confirmed there was never an issue in the beginning. Overall, the experience of fighting over a dollar was unsavory. I'd like to hope my experience was isolated to our large group size. read more

This was my introduction to the dining experience in Philly. I was staying at a place near by and while looking for something to eat, I first overlooked this place. I went back and looked at the menu and my tune changed! Mofongo, sweet plantains, cuisines with a latin and Caribbean flair?! I was sold. A quick walk and a friendly hostess later, I was seated outside to enjoy the nice weather. For my meal I ordered the Ropa vieja. Additionally, got the maduro relleno (not pictured) to go. The Ropa vieja gave me mixed feelings. The first bite of the beef was disappointing as it was a bit on the dry side especially the bits that weren't in the broth. This did improve as I ate more. The major saving grace for this dish was the yellow rice and sweet plantains. The rice and plantain combination has always been a childhood favorite and they fried these plantains at the best stage of ripeness. The soft, sweetness with the savory of the rice was perfection. Washing this down with a cold presidente was a good recall to living life on an island (how I miss such simplicity). The Maduro relleno on the other hand was so damn good! Admittedly didn't know what I was expecting, but opening the plate to a plantain boat coated with cheese exceeded my expectations! After the first bite, I was happy to be in the privacy of my hotel room to enjoy this. This thing was devoured. My phone definitely could not eat first this time. Overall a good experience for a first meal in Philly after a long morning of traveling. Fair warning (?) there was a 3% or so charge for using my credit card. If you're one who isn't fond of those extra charges, bring some cash along. read more

We were a dinner party of six. The family members had a funeral to attend the next day. We all wanted to spend time together at a fabulous restaurant. I started out with a pitcher of Blood Orange Mojitos and it was fabulous. I had the seafood soup and it was a 5 out 5. The soup was teaming with tiger shrimp, mussels and clams. Its broth was both fresh and savory. Dinner was the grilled octopus with grilled mixed vegetables. The octopus was not as plump as I have had at other establishments. It could have been seasoned a touch heavier. It relied too much on the melted butter. I would score it a 3 out of 5. Others in party all had different dishes from each other and rated theirs a 5 out of 5 across the board. I did not make it to dessert. It was great to be able to have some Puerto Rican Food during my recent visit to Philly. This place was really nice, with cool décor and ambiance and a very extensive menu with plenty of choices. The Mofongo was excellent and it was great to see the many ways you could get it with, however the "carne frita" had more fat than meat. The waitress that we had could not really be bothered with explaining drinks or dishes in more detail and her demeanor really detracted from the experience. She did not really have time to explain to my wife the different mocktails available and did not really have a clue about the rums available. She seemed to be in a rush to move to other tables. The iPad menus were great to see pictures of dishes but the mofongo dishes only had picture of the one with seafood. It would have been great to see the other mofongo combinations, especially when the server was not really into explaining much detail of the dishes. I was excited to be able to get a Medalla beer, and asked the server if they were really cold, and she said they were, except the beer was pretty warm when it got to me. My rum drinks were very good. Overall a good experience, but really bummed about the automatic 18% tip regardless of party size and on top of that a 2.3% credit card fee. When the tips are automatic, the servers are not really motivated to earn them. This would have been an experience where I would have tipped 10 - 15%, not 18%, but did not get a chance. read more

Made reservations but got there early and was greeted by hostess at stand as we walked in and seated in the upstairs part of the restaurant. They have a full bar and TV's with sporting events playing. Our server was friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu and suggested the fried seafood appetizer which ended up being so good. She check in on our table and made sure we were good. While waiting for our appetizers to arrive we had bread to eat on and wait. While waiting this lady approaches us and asked to take our picture, umm ok. She's flicking away and I wait for her to then try and get money from us nope she says thanks and walks off (I heard her snapping away downstairs). She returns later with 3 photos in a frame and said they were $20 each. I did end up getting on since I was there celebrating but the whole encounter was different, like no communication at all. read more

Weren't there for dinner on a Wednesday evening. To start, I ordered a martini and it came back so full of olive juice (super dirty), which should NEVER be served that way unless requested by the patron. Asked for "three olives up" and it came with only one stating that it was a big one (not really). For dinner, I ordered the Paella and at best I can only give the meal a 3-stars rating. The good, plenty of food, especially rice. The bad, TOO MUCH rice, rice, rice and not enough of the meat and fish. Chicken was dry, only a few slices of sausage, and the squid rings were far and few between. I don't want to pan the place but for Spanish food I would likely try another place. read more

Avoid! Had 48 hour cancellation policy. (Which of course is unusual). I thought I had cancelled on OpenTable but I guess the cancellation didn't go through. I only found that out when I got a text the day before the reservation (NOT within this 48 hour cancellation period). I called immediately but then insisted on charging me $50! read more

The food was good, but the service was pretty disappointing. We were a group of 10, and they forgot 5 things, including 3 drinks and 2 appetizers. We had to ask twice about the missing items, even after our main courses arrived. One of my friends got a warm beer, and when he asked for a new one, they just brought him the same one back! To make it worse, they added a 20% gratuity automatically and charged an extra 2% for using a credit card. Very unfair, but with the obligatory tip, no wonder the service is so bad. read more

The aroma captured me as I walked by due to my bus detour. I looked down at the plates of the individuals dining outside at a patio like setting. When I looked up at the menu posted outside. I was sold! Upon entering the dark wood abstract setting with Latin decor, I was instantly happy. The pleasant staff and aroma of food was welcoming after a long day at work. Cristian our server introduced himself with a smile. I asked his recommendation for a cocktail and was I pleasantly surprised by the Mixto Golden that was like a mini fish bowl with a Casamigis nip which I am still nursing. A couple 2 tables away had a pitcher of red sangria which sparked a happy conversation. My salad with grilled shrimp, mango and avocado was the absolute BEST!!! I tried a scallop from the risotto. I had pretty high hopes for this place but ultimately, was underwhelmed. I would like to return to see if conditions improve though, as I REALLY wanted to fall in love with this place. Went with a friend for brunch. I got one of the plates that came with 2 eggs, Maduro, a breakfast meat (I tried the vegan sausage), and rice/beans and a piece of fried cheese. The biggest complaint was that my rice and beans were cold! Like, definitely not hot, but I was so hungry and the waiter wasn't accessible so I just sucked it up and ate cold. Everything else was fine. My friend got a different plate that came with an arepa. By the time he but into it I could tell, and he outright said, that it was hard and not good. I could tell just by looking at it. I am convinced these are merely store bought arepa discs that are reheated. If they're handmade I was be shocked as they are just too perfectly shaped. I know this is a vague statement, but my takeaway was that there just wasn't any love in the food. Just, ok. Not sure if I'll return. The ambience is great though! The service was hit and miss and I was often looking around for someone for water refills etc. I get it if they were slammed but it really wasn't that busy. read more

Everything was beautiful about Mixto for my first time visit! This place was recommended by a friend for a great spot for a nice vibe, beautiful atmosphere, multiple bars and it's overall welcome. Let me say, she wasn't wrong, everything was great! I walked in (this last Friday night) and the host was phenomenal! The host made sure to give me some recommendations, directions and assured that he could answer any questions. He was kind, fashionable and overall a great first impression when I stepped in! Everyone from the staff, management, and guests were what I described to my friend via text "dazzling." I chose to sit at the downstairs bar, and the staff were attentive and truly helpful! The drinks were made to perfection, the timeliness was on point and there were no complaints! I got food (not pictured), the fried calamari and the chicken empanadas! Whew, they were GREAT! The food was fresh, quick (but not rushed). I think the appetizers and the two cocktails were fitting for our quick visit! Nice, clean establishment overall. After a fun week trying several great restaurants in Philadelphia I decided to take a small gamble and try something different after searching for good restaurants in the area I found Mixto, and boy was that a good find. This restaurant did not disappoint from the drinks to the appetizers to the main course, everything I had, and tried was excellent. Started with a very good cocktail, which I cannot remember the name of but the picture is in the post. Also had to try the mofongp and chicharron which were both amazing. My only reason for not giving this restaurant a five was because my main course which was lomo soltado with a twist. That was the only critique I could give, as it wasn't as good as the normal traditional dish. If it had been a solid as the traditional version, I would've given this restaurant a five hands down.. Went to Mixto for breakfast. It was not crowded and we were seated downstairs. Ordered the Cuban breakfast , sangria , mango mimosa , and brownie. The waitress forgot to bring out our bread but we did not make a big deal about it. The sangria was ok. The Cuban breakfast was delicious. The mimosa was good ( they charged and extra dollar for the mango water). Our waitress was not over bearing but checked on us as needed. The brownie was good and I loved the presentation ( especially for breakfast ). I look forward to visiting Mixto for dinner. read more

We have eaten here many times. My daughter loves the empanadas. All the salads are fresh & delicious. I have tried the vegan paella which is very tasty but this time I tried the ratatouille which was a miss. No flavor. Will not get again. The other dish we tried was the chicken & rice which was flavorful. Our other go to is the ceviche. Service is attentive & professional. Inside was loud so we sat at the outside tables. Apparently I've had brunch here 5+ years ago with a close friend and didn't realize it until my friend and I met up here for brunch before our full day of activities. From what I remember, the experience was great and recently I enjoyed the experience as well. The inside has a traditional and wood deco theme with low lighting. We arrived on a relatively busy Sunday but had reservations so that made things really easy. I ordered eggs, bacon, pancakes, and plantain which was vey delicious. My friends food also looked good. For drinks I took the servers suggestion which was delicious but a bit sweeter than what I normally go for (don't remember the name but it came in a bucket) and let's just say I walked out a very happy, charismatic, and vibrant person. I would love to try their dinner menu in the future because their paella is calling my name. read more

I guess there's a reason I haven't been here in 4 years. If I want good Latin food for half the price, I'm going to stay in South Philly. We came with a big party today and had an adequate meal but service left a lot to be desired (our server seemed like she didn't want to be there) and so did some of the flavors. My breakfast burrito was so bland that I don't even think there was salt in it. We asked a busser for hot sauce and more dressing for a salad, and then when we didn't get it, we asked our waiter. The busser came around again and told us we have to put the request in with the waiter - awkward. They both came eventually, but I already ate half my bland burrito. The smaller dishes were fine. The guac came with plantain chips, which were the best part of the meal. Followed by a close second of grilled bread. The empanadas were nicely fried and came with some spicy sauce, which we liked. The side of sweet plantains is literally one small plantain in 3 pieces. Maybe I'll come back for drinks sometime! read more

Food was sent back, I ordered the Paella. Seafood was served cold, calms, and mussels were cold and over cooked. Actually most of the seafood was rubbery and overcooked. I asked the server for claws to crack the lobster claw and never recieved them. There was a large table seated to our left, very load, yelling at each other and carrying on. We asked to moved, and told they were not seating people upstairs. They were so load we could not hear each other, or hold a conversation at our own table. We were automatically charge 18% for service? We didn't get that kind of service, it was subpar at best. read more

One of my most favorite brunch places in Philly. The drinks here slap and the food always hits. Mimosas are always a great option here and so are the mojitos. Every time I come I get the cubanito. It's a small espresso with steamed condensed milk - it's so good and I wish I could have a million. I got the breakfast burrito, calamari, and the Argentinian breakfast. I highly recommend all of these options. The calamari is nice and crispy, the steak and sauce are so delicious. I would come here for brunch every day if I could! read more

One of my favorite spots in Philly! The food is so good. Last time we went, I don't think we had a reservation and we had an option to be seated upstairs or downstairs in a reasonable amount of time (under 10 minutes). This was a Friday night, late dinner (probably around 8.) The service is very friendly and enjoyable, but the food is what brings this home for me. I'm a little conflicted on how to rate Mixto. The service was friendly and the food was mostly good. I think it comes down to price point. We dropped about $100 per person for food that was good but not spectacular. The lamb and risotto was nice, but the risotto was a bit salty and the asparagus and artichokes in it were tough. Our mojitos were excellent, as was the tres leches dessert, but our entrees (lamb and scallops) were just ok. Not bad, but not thrilling. I also really dislike when restaurants charge an up charge for credit cards. It's 2023, and few people work in cash. Yes, there's a fee for cards, but that's what it costs to do business. You don't itemize the menu for food costs, staff costs, rent, insurance. Especially when a bill is over $200, asking for cash or a cost penalty is absurd. Food is good. The drinks are well done but here's what take away.. I was able to substitute certain things on my meal bc we dont all like rice and beans. When my husband went to order he was told no because "it's a classic!" Yeah that one is a classic! Please Note, Gratuity is included and they do not tell you.
