Overall meh. Indian take on West Indian cuisine. Fell short on the flavor profile for West Indian food being as though there were a lot of West Indian dishes. Oxtails taste sweet and needed salt and the right base for the sauce..was lacking the appropriate flavor profile. The rice tasted like basmati which is cool for Indian cuisines but usually with dishes like Oxtails or Jerk Chicken I'd expect red beans and white grain rice cooked in coconut milk for the flavor profile. Mussels are delicious, they just don't give you a lot of them if you go during any of their prefixed menu offerings. Coconut shrimp are good. Carrot cake was one of the best I've tasted in a long time. Even if your not a fan of carrot cake I think you'll enjoy. There weren't big chunks of fruit or nuts inside. It was layered, fluffy, moist, cream cheese icing spot on, just really spot on. I could have ordered a cake to go and left the food. Drinks are pricey for what you get in return. Some of the drinks are watered down, like their "Sex on the Boat." They give it to you in this cute boat shaped dish with a straw with flashing lights (photo/vid attached) but there's a ton of ice and not much alcohol or flavor. You also have to wait for your entire party before ordering appetizers. Very strange to me. Most places will allow you to order drinks and appetizers while you wait for the rest of your party. Also be mindful that there's an 18% charge for credit card. If that bothers you be prepared to bring cash. They typically will only allow you to split the check two ways so for larger parties it's best to bring cash to avoid confusion when everyone is paying for themselves. read more

We tried Flambo for their Valentines pre fixe dinner. The coconut shrimp and curry mussels were delicious. I also tried the curry shrimp with basmati rice and chickpeas with potatoes. The taste would have been great alongside of warmed food. The service was off and on. I don't drink alcohol and asked to swap champagne for pellegrino and had to go through a hoop or two for an adjustment. The restaurant filled up after around 7:30 and there was a great DJ playing island vibe music to accompany dinner. The restaurant was casual and had good space. Overall, just ok foodwise. A small group of us stopped by Flambo for some Caribbean bites. In general, I think that we were expecting something a bit different. This place seems more of a Indian-inspired Trini spot...or maybe more of a Trini-inspired Indian spot. Overall, I think the main issue that I had with the food was the base for the sauce used in a few of their dishes was really sweet compared to what I have experienced in NYC Trini restaurants, particularly for the stewed chicken and oxtail. The Trini food that I've had in the past had more of a spicy kick compared to what I had during our visit. While the stewed chicken was not a home run for me, I really enjoyed the wontons appetizer. Another person in our group commented that the seafood paella was a bit dry for them. For the prices, I thought the portion sizes were decent. Most plates are in the 20 dollar range although the oxtails are in the 30 dollar range. The staff was really nice and approachable, but the service could have been better. It seemed as if there was a lot of confusion, which was puzzling bc we were the only folks eating in the restaurant for the duration of our meal. I'm not sure why, but it seemed to be a bit of a problem evenly splitting our check four ways. For some reason, they split the check in a manner in which two from our group were charged $15-20 more than the other two. To end on a positive note, I thought in general the restaurant was beautiful with a nice layout. The restaurant looks like it's very accommodating for groups of all sizes. We went on Valentine's Day and they just offered a special Valentine's Day prefixed menu, which we didn't realize until we sat down. There were 4 choices for apps, 6 main course options and 3 different desserts, plus complimentary glass of champagne. I chose the curried mussels, ox tail and ghulab Jamon. The mussels were my favorite. They were very flavorful. The oxtail was too saucy and not as big as I expected. The ghulab jamon was too soggy and sweet and I really didn't like it. Truly inspirational story of the father-son duo who own this restaurant. Both owners are super friendly and humble. The Rum Punch was strong and yummy! My first time trying an Oxtail curry and wasn't expecting it to be on the sweeter side but I confirmed with one of my Trinidadian friends and he said there is indeed brown sugar so it is supposed to be slightly sweet and not too spicy which was exactly how the curry tasted. The Chicken curry was my favorite of the two - so flavorful! I love that they served a side of Chickpeas with the chicken curry and Kidney beans with the oxtail curry. Prices are on par with other restaurants in the city. Bathroom was spacious, clean and well equipped! Overall, I was underwhelmed. It was bad by any means. It just didn't click for me. The menu feels very Indian, yet the weird "Caribbean"is in the name. Maybe I'm missing something? When I went for lunch I was literally the only patron there. I got the butter paneer and am appetizer. Both were fine. The butter paneer was just not doing it for me though but I ate it anyways. It was too sweet, not much depth and looked and almost tasted like tomato soup! Like no other butter paneer I've had. The service though was totally great. Super friendly and sweet! My hubby heard about this place from his coworkers and then we saw a feature on FYI Philly so we decided to give this place a try... Reservations were made for an early Saturday evening. The staff that we interacted with were pleasant and attentive. We ordered Fried Dumplings with Shrimp and Buss Up Shot to share, I ordered the Butter Chicken and Hubby ordered the Stew Chicken. The food came out fairly quickly. The dumplings were good and not like anything I've tasted before - the flavor was on point and the temperature was perfect, presentation was OK. I've never had Roti (and I think that's what "Buss Up Shot" was), I waited until my Butter Chicken came out before I dug in to the Buss Up Shot - the Butter Chicken was OK, I wanted more authentic flavor but this dish was a tad underwhelming for me, nevertheless, I ate it because I was hungry; the Buss Up shot tasted like it could've been a little undercooked (again, this was my first time ever having it so I wasn't sure what to expect) - it was flaky, doughy and buttery; Hubby took one bite and said "that's all you". Went there with a party of 12(with reservation) and we were probably only on of three groups in the restaurant. Service was incredibly slow, mostly due to the waiter having to work both in the kitchen and the floor. The only downside I had was my coconut shrimp was not cooked which made me question how the food is prepared given the outside was battered but the shrimp was grey and not pink. :-o I informed our server who apologized and brought me a new plate of coconut shrimp with a few extra shrimp so I appreciated the correction. We got there early and the bartender was an accommodating, friendly and gave great suggestions. I've never had Caribbean Indian food. What a crazy experience. To be honest it gives Indian food a run for its money. It's really cool it is located in Midtown area which makes it very convenient to get to. I loved how spicy they can make the dishes. I had the Chinese style chicken. It was pretty good. I loved the amount of portions offered (although I wish there was less rice per meal). I also had the curry chicken which was pretty good as well. I ordered a side of callaloo which is basically taros leaves and coconut milk. I was expecting it to be sweet but it was savory instead (I don't know why I was expecting anything with taro leaves to be sweet). Tried Flambo for brunch at around 11:30am on a Saturday and there was no one in the establishment. My friend still wanted to stay and try the food. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. Since it's getting cold in philly, we decided to wander about to get some warm Caribbean food. This place did not disappoint. They recently opened this location. We decided to do the tasting menu to try a couple of things. I thought this definitely was a good option for someone who wants to try out multiple items and is not familiar with Caribbean cuisine. For our first course we had lamb chops and saheena, and wings. Lamb Chops were amazing. The meat was cooked perfectly and it was very flavorful. Saheena was described as a deep fried chickpea and pea item. It was very crispy, and soft on the inside. It wasn't too spicy and it was a good option for vegetarians. Wings were also very flavorful and cooked well. The spices complimented each other. For the main entree we had oxtail and goat curry. Both entrees were served with rotis (indian bread) and dhal puri. The roti was so crispy and each layer was buttery perfect. The oxtail and goat curry were both cooked well and tasted so delicious. I would 100% get the oxtail if you're between the two. The service was very quick and friendly. Kevin was bartender and he was very helpful in helping us chose drinks. Get the sex on a boat drink! It tasted so delicious and the amount is good for the price. It comes in a cute boat, and there's a little floating duck in it. I went here on Halloween night, and the food nightmare went well with the occasion. While my server was very polite and attentive, all the food she brought from the "chef" was lukewarm at best. In addition, for this to be a Trinidadian restaurant, there was no flavor packed into any of the things I ordered. The mixed vegetables were distasteful, and I'm sure they had been sitting for some days. I got it taken off the bill. The lamb chops were a huge disappointment as they were tougher than a Calculus II midterm, and this also had a flavor as if it came out of a can or maybe the pouches of food our military uses to eat. My napkins smelled like they were sitting in the washer too long before being dried, and even my cup had stains on it and had to be replaced. An older gentleman caught me right in the middle of trying to chew the piece of rubber on the plate and asked how everything was, to which I lied and replied, "It's ok." My server would then come and say that he was the chef who made my "delicious" food.... Save ya time and money. read more

My wife and I visited Flambo recently and had an excellent dinner. I'm Guyanese and I love Philly's food scene, but it's sorely lacking in Guyanese food. Flambo may be a Trinidadian restaurant, but there's a lot of crossover between the two cultures, especially when it comes to food. I'm happy to say that the food really gave me the home cooked feel that I miss. I had previously ordered from Flambo's old location once before, but it was during the height of the pandemic and it had to be take-out. I loved what I had, but living in South Philly, it was tough to get to their North Broad location. So, I'm super happy that they're now in Center City. We opted to do the tasting menu, which let us pick an assortment of dishes for about $50 each plus drinks. Not a bad deal at all for the amount of food we got, and it was great to try some things that I'm not totally familiar with. I found the food well cooked and, flavor wise, it absolutely tasted like my family's cooking. The duck curry in particular tasted like my mom's, it's a must try. The food was authentically cooked, that means the curry has bones - probably a lot of bones for those unfamiliar with this kind of food. That's how it should be done, any other way and it wouldn't taste right. Give the curry a shot for sure, it's probably different from what you've had before and it's excellent. Service was super friendly, they were sure to ask for our thoughts on the food and drinks and they seem open to adjusting things as they figure out this new location. The cocktail menu is also a work in progress, but the two I had were exactly what I want from an island drink: sugary, fruity, and definitely alcoholic. I was very excited to try this new location. Being Caribbean, there's not too many options in Philadelphia. I had such a good dining experience at Flambo. The owners were right in the front by the bar and were every welcoming. While I was waiting for the rest of my party, I delighted in a Spicy margarita, which was very good. For appetizers we started with the fried shrimp wontons, jerk chicken wings, and pholourie. Everything was so good, although I wish the Jerk wings were a bit more spicy, but thats just me. For entree, I got the pepper shrimp w/ white rice. It was very good and everything I expected from Caribbean cuisine. I had a wonderful time visiting flambo for the first time. My server karlia was delightful and attentive. I had lamb chops, crispy pork and the oxtail and each dish was better than the last. The lambchop was delicious but then next came the crispy pork which was to die for. I ended it with the oxtail with was falling off the bone and butter m, juicy and delicious. This is my first time to the Center City location and I'm just sorry, I haven't been earlier. The service is always great and I believe they've upgraded their wine/ cocktail selections. I had the Brunch punch with coconut and guava and Wowwwwwww; Very impressive. I also had the oxtails and the flavor was sooo delicious. I finally had an opportunity to try what I believe is one of the newer appetizers: the pakora and I'm a big fan. I hope it's available when I go back. I've been in a few times since the first opened. At first, I loved it. The ambiance was nice, the service was good, and the food was good. I initially this was a 4-5 star place. After 3 visits, I can say that the drinks aren't as good as they could be. They are very Instagramable but that's it. I was there with a party of 3 and we didn't like our drinks. A second round was it ordered. True they had a new bartender on that night but they did the last few times I had been in as well. The last two times, it was the bartenders first night there. It's unfortunate because I have concerns about a high turnover. The food was good but not spectacular for the pricing as well. I feel like a lot of places try to complete with some of the Starr or Schulson restaurants with pricing but don't deliver on the execution with food, drinks, or service.
