I transferred dentists as part of a move from Raleigh to Durham and based on a referral from a…read moreneighbor. Unfortunately, we did not have a good (net) experience. We are a family with fairly healthy teeth, practice regular hygiene and dental cleanings, and had no significant issues 10 months (long stretch due to Covid) prior at our prior long-term dentist--upon seeing Dr. Gaddis, multiple cavities, root canals, and others services were promoted, many of questionable need. Pros: Good location, nice office, new equipment/technology, thorough hygienists, nice staff (for the most part), good bedside manner (for the most part) Cons: 1. Wife was referred for THREE root canals, ALL of which our endodontist told us he has no idea what Dr. Gaddis was referring to. Gaddis also referred us (like all her clients) to an endodontist that has many poor reviews, which was an early red flag, and why we ended up selecting our own (that is highly reviewed). It also raises the specter of potential quid pro quo between the two practices. 2. Gaddis told me my daughter needed sealant because of her baby teeth cavities being an indicator for her proclivity to cavities. When I said my prior dentist told us baby teeth are not a good indicator for cavities in permanent teeth (because they're weaker, less enamel, etc), she said "I don't recall hearing that in school". After a quick Internet search, I confirmed it is well known amongst professionals in the field that baby teeth cavities are NOT a good indicator for the health of adult teeth, leading me to conclude Gaddis either doesn't know some fundamental facts in dentistry or is intentionally discarding what she knows to promote more services (consistent with Con #1)...either of which is not good. 3. Front office staff can be a bit edgy/dry/cold...not outright mean, but not generally warm, like our prior practice. It's not a deal-breaker on its own, but coupled with the other issues not helpful. We were really hoping that we'd found a new dental home and allowed benefit of the doubt several times, but ultimately too many red flags have pushed us back to our prior practice until we can find a better local option.

Someone eventually let me in (8 minutes after my appt time) and asked how I could be helped. I said, "I'm here for my 9:oo appt". He then tells me that they don't open until 9:30. ????? Why was a 9am appt made then? No adequate response was received. No offer to help remedy the situation. People take time off from their jobs, and/or make arrangements to facilitate weekday appts. To have your appt not honored shows a lack of disrespect for their clients. Very disappointed in Durham Dental Studio.

Their Dental Assistant Courtney took me back within 5 minutes of arriving and provided so much guidance and reassurance towards supporting my dental needs while pregnant. Dr. Ali was lovely too! He constantly checked on my pain level while cleaning the area and made numerous reassuring statements about supporting my needs moving forward and even demoed how I need to support my gums. They even were able to get me in for a recheck next Saturday and cleaning to support my needs. SUCH WONDERFUL HUMANS! The person supporting my checkout was lovely as well. Their billing department uses high pressure tactics to collect outstanding balances that resulted because they did not properly file insurance claims. For example, when my wife called for an appointment due to a toothache, Riccobene initially said they would not schedule the appointment unless my wife paid an outstanding balance. She reminded them about our insurance and a week later we got confirmation from the insurance company that they paid Riccobene and that we do not owe anything. I have also gotten collection notices from Riccobene, but when I called and asked they had not filed the insurance claims. This sort of thing happens often, and they are now asking patients to leave a credit card on file so they can charge it without our knowing. After many years of dealing with this we are fed up and plan to seek out a new dentist. it is a shame because their dental services are very good.

I really USE Yelp reviews and read them carefully because I really want to know WHY you like a doctor (it is just cuz you think he has "dreamy blue eyes" or is it more?) SO...HERE'S WHY I LIKE DR HILL: 1. I'm 67, fit, active -- walker, runner (not "serious" -- walk/run 2-3 miles 4-6x a week -- swimmer in summer and Fuel Fitness). I have hard plastic orthotics that I've worn for THIRTY YEARS. I assumed, when I first visited Dr. Hill, that my feet have changed over the past 30 (!) years and the orthotics would need to be replaced (not cheap, totally necessary). In other words, 30-yr old orthotics were an engraved invitation to "sell me" new orthotics. Dr. Hill held them to the bottom of my feet and said "well, these still look fine..." I'm not an untrusting person -- but THAT inspired trust! 2. She is a real "problem solver." She doesn't just reach up to her mental shelf and pull off a pre-formulated answer. She really listens and THINKS. And she's very clear, plain-spoken and practical. I have spent $2500 out of pocket (after insurance payments) trying to find out what is causing pain in my right ankle and base of my toes on right foot. 3 x-rays. 3 visits to EmergeOrtho (I could write an essay -- but let me just say I will NEVER EVER return to them -- waste of money. One doctor would contradict the next!) Visited Duke Sports -- and 3 Physical Therapy visits, who said it was tendonitis and only PT exercises would help, over a long time. Exercises DID seem to help -- but still definitely "something not right" and I've been scared to run and scared to do a lot of walking for fear I might cause some kind of real damage. 3. Dr. Hill heard my tale...took xrays. Said "I think what's going on here is complex." Said legs are likely aching due to: 1. my venous insufficiency (wear those compressions socks!). 2. Looks like I don't put the normal amount of pressure on my big toe -- causing the 2 next to it to be bearing more -- getting sore. 3. The two toes next to my big toe slant a bit towards the bit toe. Narrows the gap between the bones on both those toes, possibly somewhat pinching all the things that run between those bones. Said the hard plastic orthotics can sometimes cause an issue -- so go to a store and buy some insoles with heel cups (those were $10 -- so NOT a huge expense). Said to be better about wearing compression sock. When I said "so...why does the middle toe on my right foot stick up like that when I try to curl my toes? Still doing that after a year -- what's causing it?" She said "I have no idea. See? No b.s. -- Just one more reason why I like her. :-)

Dr Hill permanently ruined my toenails with a simple ingrown toenail procedure. On top of that, she did the procedure to both toenails, even though only one needed the work. Why? Perhaps because she is a sadist. That was the vibe I was getting.
