Made an appointment for a hair cut, long layers and facial framing with Gabby M and it turned out amazing. I have long straight hair and adding long layers for some volume was scary for me as I've seen so many hair layer horror stories. I'm so glad I trusted gabby to make my hair exactly how I wanted it. Just got my hair toned and cut by Berret after a referral from a friend- it's been a while since I've been at a salon and I had a wonderful time! I did have a wait of like a month and a half, but they asked for pictures and had me come in for a free consultation before the actual haircut. She asked clear questions and understood what I was looking for and made great suggestions. The cut and color turned out great, the process was easy and relatively quick, and everyone was masked and the salon was clean and pretty. The salon is right by the Dale Turner YMCA and has a few parking spots available in the lot immediately between the YMCA and the salon. I'd really recommend it! read more

I just came here for the first time after growing out my hair from a bad cut at a different salon (which shall remain nameless). James Alan Salon is fantastic! The hair stylist listened to what I liked (very important), made recommendations based on my hair type and preferred care regimen, then proceeded to give me a superb style based on that. I am VERY pleased indeed! The staff was very friendly and responsive, also, the products used are of excellent quality, and the price is more than reasonable. I will definitely return to this salon and stylist, and be back for coloring and spa services, too. I highly recommend them. read more

I've been a client here for years before covid. Loved my cut, loved the service of the clerks, loved my stylist! However, they do not accept cash at this business. 27% of people in the US can't just use a card for all transactions, and I happen to be one of them. The clerk managed to save the situation by paying with their own card and accepting my cash. People who need cash are typically already disadvantaged, it's a shame that a discriminatory practice of the owners will prevent my stylist from retaining a happy repeat client. read more

Terrible full foil and hair cut. Jake was my colorist. He over-processed my hair and it has been breaking off at the ends. It took him nearly 5 hours to complete the disaster - to the point where he did not have time to do a conditioning treatment or cut. Another stylist did the cut- she gave me an ok cut but it could not undue the frizzy disaster. I should have taken pictures but I was too embarrassed. I went to another salon two weeks later to get a conditioning treatment and to trim the frizzed ends out gently (the layer that the stylist put in have made it really difficult to manage.) I am a working mom of 2 kids with very little time to style my hair. I regularly meet with clients. And have been flat out embarrassed to leave my hair down. Be very careful of this salon and I would not recommend booking with Jake. read more

Zero if I could. I've been a loyal client for 5 years, and referred family members here. I didn't trust anyone else with my hair except Amber and thought others would be equally good after she left. I never found such a good fit with anyone else. However, they ruined my balayage by toning it too dark and making my hair almost black again. They stripped the toner and asked me to use dish soap so the toner comes out. No problem. Then they scheduled a redo, cancelling the appointment a few hours before due to the stylist's emergency. Okay, fine. Then they rescheduled me for seven days out - I was annoyed but said okay. The manager then called me personally to ask if I'd rather wait two more days to be with a stylist I had seen a few times, Tahnee. I agreed for an appointment at 5:30. On the day of the appointment, Seattle was about to face a record snowstorm and streets were packed, so I was 20 minutes late. I called the receptionist asking if it was still okay for me to be seen - and she said no problem. Once I walked in, Tahnee said she can't do my hair because I am 20 minutes late and "don't I know that if I'm so late she can't do my hair, it's not her fault she expects her clients to be on time." Then why would YOUR STAFF tell me it was okay to come? She was extremely rude and unnecessarily aggressive. I tried to explain my side and she SHUSHED ME like I'm a 10 year old. I walked out at that point, and emailed the manager. The manager called me immediately on her day off while she was sick, which I appreciated. However the conversation took a turn when she began defending her employee and accusing me of being hard to please. She said "this is not the first time we haven't been able to make you happy." In my five years with the salon, I have asked for a redo this ONCE. She kept scoffing on the phone, and saying she doesn't know how to make me happy and what else she can do, then said it's better if I go to another salon because they are not able to please me. She said there are many other salons in Seattle and I should find one that will make me happy. All I asked was to have it be recognized that their employee's behavior was wrong, yet even the manager was using an accusatory and simply unprofessional approach with me by making it personal and saying this isn't the first time I've been unhappy. I have never faced such awful behavior in a professional place before. I never expected it from a place I've been loyal to for five years. I also didn't expect the manager to defend her rude employee and instead accuse me and scoff at me on the phone. I am sure if she replies to this comment she will say she tried to rectify it and that I agreed to go somewhere else. They will mess up your hair, then make you wait 9 days with yellow untoned hair and behave horribly with you, only to have the manager call you again and accuse you of being hard to please when they messed up your hair in the first place. I have been trying to get in touch with the owner, because if this is how they treat their clients of five years when they messed up in the first place, there's obviously something wrong with their training. If you are blonde and need to maintain, or you want to be blonde, I cannot recommend Amy enough. She gets it. She is a goddess when it comes to color and she gets it right every single time. She can take damaged, awful colored hair and make it pretty again. She can also bring you from almost black to "that looks natural" blonde, without the over processed look. Went in for a hair consultation, I wanted to dye my hair silver. Staff was very friendly and all the people there seemed like regulars. All COVID regulations followed, very clean, spaced out, sanitized, the whole shebang. When I went in, the woman talked to me for a few minutes and said that she wanted to be honest and that if I really wanted silver hair done right, I should see a vivid color specialist. She still gave me a quote but referred me to an awesome colorist to do my hair instead. Any salon who cares more about my happiness than a $250 check for the service is a great and honest salon. I will go back there again when I'm tired of vivid colors! read more

Aly is a newer stylist to the salon who performed a color miracle on my hair. I had a bad dye job at another salon and my hair was literally green. I thought I was going to have to cut it all off, but she found a way to save it and color it back to a color I liked without killing the hair. She was also really detailed and upfront about pricing too, which as someone on a budget, I sincerely appreciate. She is also just really kind and nice to talk too. Highly recommend! read more

I had a great experience getting my hair cut by Chloe! I didn't have a clear idea of what I wanted when I walked in and she worked with me to create a style that I love. She put me at ease with great conversation and really encouraged me to give input at all stages of the process- which is HUGE! I am a woman with short hair (think 2-4 fade) and I've been to salons and barber shops all over the greater Seattle area and this is the only place I've felt like the stylist was comfortable cutting/ shaving my hair as the short look isn't very "traditionally feminine". Writing in about Jake! Jake has cut my hair twice now, and just colored my hair for the first time. I sent him photos of what I wanted before my appointment, and asked how he thought we could achieve that look. I have naturally blonde hair but like to be a bit lighter, so Jake recommenced a full foil with a toner- and paid attention to every detail while doing my hair. I've always been picky about getting my hair done, but both times Jake has exceeded my expectations and made me beyond happy! He is also great with product recommendations. I have been going to this salon for 20+ years and they always do a great job! Even though I don't live as close as I used to I still make the drive because I know I can trust them with my hair. Everyone is very friendly and I love the relaxing environment. The spa is great for waxes, it is very peaceful and relaxing. I like that the waxing is done in a way that is less painful and less irritating to my skin compared to other places I have been to. I can tell that they use high quality products for both the salon & spa services. Everyone I have seen here has been very professional, friendly and has done great work! read more

This place offers great services and a top quality salon experience. I have never left with hair I wasn't happy with. I started going there in 2004 and always end up there again after I've checked out anything else (I get restless). But this review is specifically for their terrific front desk staff. I notice them because I work a front desk, too, and I know how hard it is to bring your A game day in and day out. Although everyone in that position has been stellar through the years, Kim is the one with whom I've had the most recent contact, and she is seriously the bomb. How she can maintain warm courtesy and enthusiasm for the duration of every single phone call, I will never know, but I am always grateful. Lackluster or indifferent reception staff detract from even the best salon experience. Kudos to James Alan for not half-assing this aspect of their business. read more

After a very traumatic bad haircut experience (not at James Alan) I was on the hunt for a new hair stylist that could give me the haircut of my dreams!! It took me almost a year to find the courage to trust someone again and I am so glad that I went to James Alan. I didn't have a particular stylist that I wanted to see but I had heard good things about this salon so I just went with whomever had an opening (I know, risky, right!?!). I ended up seeing Aly and what a blessing that was! She is amazing! I have never been this happy with my hair...ever! She listened to what I wanted and what I did not want and she executed it wonderfully. I already wanna see her again cause I never want my hair to change from when I walked out of that salon. A wonderful experience for my big day! My hairdresser was amazing, a brunnette about 5'6". unfortunately I cannot recall her name to thank her on here. It was my big day, I was getting married that evening. Needless to say I was a nervous wreck attempting not to morph into a bridezilla. The lovely lady styling my hair took one look at the photos I brought, and recreated my hair into a masterpiece! I felt stunning, and was shocked when it seemed I was undercharged. I was so excited because after moving from Hawai'i I was in need of my 'go-to' salon, and with all the great yelp reviews, I was certain I had found it. Unfortunately, my experience there convinced me otherwise. Pros: *Easy to make an appt *Front desk staff was friendly and offered me refreshment *My hair was styled really well (the finishing touch) Cons: *I felt like my stylist rushed through the [evening] appointment. *The wash/condition portion of the experience lasted all of four minutes (it takes me longer than this to just shampoo, and forget a scalp massage. Perhaps I'm spoiled as at my salon in Hawai'i a relaxing scalp massage was standard practice) *My haircut was pretty much what I had walked in with (which was a pretty boring cut) despite telling her that I wanted a change and a lot more layers (I even made sure to tell her to be bold and adventurous) She sensed my disappointment since I asked her to add more layers and tried to make up with really styling it well (which I do appreciate but the styling lasts till your next wash, the cut, a lot longer). Overall, I expect a little bit of pampering when I go to a salon and to feel on cloud nine when I walk out. I would say that my feet were firmly on that ground when I left the salon. read more

When my best friend who normally does my hair for me (don't worry, she works at a nice salon in Everett, I don't let some random untrained person touch my hair) randomly stopped talking to me 2 months after I'd last had my hair done I started yelping for a new salon closer to home to go to. No one had Yelped JAS but I found some positive reviews for them online. So I made an appointment. A few weeks later I was in for my appointment with Lauren, an adorable and absolutely awesome girl with a cute chocolate brown pixie-type cut. She rocks. She talked shop with me about all sorts of crazy gossipy things that I don't get to talk to my friends about because I'm not a gossiper, but something comes out of me when I get in the chair at the salon. I've now seen her twice and she does an awesome job, remembers what I like done to my hair, and remembers the crazy stories I told her the first time. The salon is currently in a temporary location until their new place is finished, but even as a temp place it's not that bad. The staff is always nice and you can tell they remember their clients, and it's always nice to know that they remember what you like done with your hair rather than having to reference a card or a computer program to see what they did last time. I'll keep going, at least until my best friend randomly decides to start talking to me again. Ha. read more

Amber is my gal; I know her personally, even before she started working here. She had her eye on this place and really wanted to be part of this salon. When she was finally hired, I made a mental note of it because I live in Shoreline. My mom has always been my hairdresser; when she moved to Las Vegas 5 years ago I had to learn how to color my own hair. After a year of doing it solo I finally broke down and started going to a salon. I started with Supercuts hoping to save some money but that was shortlived because you get what you pay for. I then tried Habitude in Ballard (I opted for the fresh out of beauty school stylist) but that was also short lived because of the attitude. Then I went to Rudy's in Ballard & Phinney; both stylists were great but I noticed the color wasn't lasting past a 3rd or 4th wash. Plus I didn't like the price i was paying. My boyfriend's mom who has also become my personal hairdresser lives in Salt Lake City, so between me doing my own hair and the two out of state moms, I finally broke down again and thought I'd give Amber a try. And I think this is where I will remain loyal outside of the two moms - and to myself :) I live in Shoreline and love that A) I know Amber, B) I had a wonderful experience, C) Amber totally matched my color to what they had, AND i'm on my 4th wash, still looks awesome, D) this salon is right down the street from my home, and E) this color was suprisingly less than i expected and I will be back. I don't think I'm going to color my own hair anymore because of the whole package. In addition to all of this, James Alan Salon is involved in the coordination of a nationwide collection of stylists to provide on-going inspiration and education to Cambodian women rescued from human trafficking along with the young women at risk. They also offer their employees the option to contribute a portion of their paychecks towards this wonderful cause. This philanthropist busines acumen runs very close to my heart and I am happy to be supporting it natually. I'll be back... :) read more

I've been coming to James Alan since they were in the original small building on Richmond Beach Road! I've seen numerous stylists, gotten about every hair treatment possible done, and frequently see Jessica for my waxing needs! I have never once had a bad experience here. Coming to James Alan is just how a spa should feel... Relaxing! The salon and spa are always so clean and every person who works here is SO nice and friendly. Jessica is absolutely amazing! She's super friendly and does an amazing job. I honestly wouldn't get waxed from anyone else!! She is an eyebrow goddess :) I recently came in to chop all of my hair off!! AH! I was so nervous, but Sophia was absolutely amazing. My hair went from belly button length, to the length of my collar bones, and I am obsessed!!! We also darkened the color quite a bit and added in a few lighter pieces. My hair is so happy and healthy now. And I'm happy having SO much less hair!! :) I would honestly recommend this salon and spa, and every stylist there, to anyone! read more

Best haircut I've ever had. Amber was my stylist and did an amazing job! She was seriously the first stylist I've had who seemed to truly understand my hair type, and didn't try to force it to be something it's not. And she didn't blow-dry and straighten it after the cut, which I loved! My curls have never looked better! The salon is very open, with large mirrors and lots of windows. The front desk staff were polite and friendly. And the prices are reasonable, which is a huge plus! Oh, and they have their own non-profit group that works to help girls get out of sex trafficking by teaching them cosmetology skills so they can make a living. Really cool. Love my girl here! I have been devoted to getting my hair done and FIXED here for over 7 years. Anytime I go somewhere else, I can get it fixed here. Great for cut and color! They have many other services but I have only been in the chair. Staff is WELL trained and continue educating themselves. Prices are more than reasonable and product lines are extensive. I give this 3 stars because they have excellent customer service at the front desk. I decided to try this salon because I drive by it on a regular basis. Scheduling the appointment went smoothly and the woman was very polite and thorough. My hair stylist was professional and pleasant conversation. However, I was not happy with my hair style when I left. I was placed under a dome dryer for almost 10 minutes with a hair cut that had lot sof layers. She didn't put volume or shape in my hair style when I walked out that day I called the next day to inform them I wasn't happy. They offered to have me back so the hair stylist could fix it. However, she wasn't available for another 3-4 days. I returned a few days later and she was able to fit me between clients. I was happier when I left than my first visit, however, I am still not crazy about this hair cut. read more
