I finally narrowed it down to James at Button Down and today (June 04) I had my first haircut with Dave. And all I can say is how much I wish I had been going to Dave for the last 30 years! David gives the best cuts. I drive an hour for his consistency and super chill personality. David is one of my favorite humans. Humble, mellow, respectful, genuine, and VERY professional. The value for the price is worth commuting for. Quick and consistent cut. Hair wash with an aromatic hot towel face treatment. Then a wash and a style. Looking clean cut and professional is mandatory for my work. I pray David NEVER stops cutting hair. I'd pay double for the package at James at Button Down. The talent here is top tier in the industry. The owners obviously know what they are doing. Their standards of quality and customer experience are clear from the moment you step in to the second you depart. I wish their aesthetic and delivery of service existed in more retail locations. I've been going to David for some months now since I relocated to the city. He does not my haircut and beard trim. He makes sure to ask what we are doing each time so we are in the same page. He is very consistent and good at what he does. It's a little difficult to find the shop the first time but it's worth it. read more

Was looking for a new place to get my hair cut, and came across James at Button Down via Yelp search and decided to give it a try after reading some of the reviews. 1) The Button Down store is super nice and appropriate for the neighborhood 2) ALL the staff was super welcoming and conversational, 3) The barbershop area was awesome, clean, and had nice drink offerings. 4) I'll definitely be back. I didn't have time to get my hair cut before my trip to San Francisco from NYC, so I did a search for Best Barbers in San Fran and decided to treat myself by booking an appointment. Great spot for a hair cut. Noticed their sign on the street and stopped in to schedule a hair cut. Located in back of a great clothing store. It was decorated very nice and the chairs were comfortable. Offered a bunch of different beverages (espresso, sparkling water, whiskey) before sitting down for a hair cut. The hair cut itself was very well done. A lot of care and doesn't feel rushed at all. My hair looks great and I will definitely return for my next hair cut. read more

Got to try out this new spot the other day. Music, decor, really everything, were on point. I was lucky enough to get a cut from David James, the man himself. Years ago I was able to get a few haircuts from him in Marin, so I was eager to try this place out. Making matters a bit more complicated, my wife had completely flubbed a Covid cut, and the folks at James were able to not only fix it, but I left looking better than ever. This place only gets 2 stars because I did get a good haircut. The haircut was fine but I didn't get what I paid for. To begin: I booked online for 1:15PM and I was asked to arrive 10 minutes before my appointment. I got there 15 minutes BEFORE my appointment, I was finally taken at 15 minutes AFTER my appointment time. I did not request a barber. "First Available" was fine for me. One of the stylists finished a client at 1:10 - so I thought he would be my barber, but no. He puttered around, did some sweeping and then left - ok maybe he was taking a late lunch. The other barber did take me but 15 minutes late. Apparently there was some hiccup in the online appointment system. Most places I have gone to will greet the client when he comes in. If I was being taken by a particular stylist who is running late, someone would say something. I was just ignored until I was the only one left in the shop with the one barber. I had made an appointment online for a "Gentleman's Haircut" $65. For $65 the website said you get the following: 1) Haircut, 2) Hairwash, 3) Warm towel, 4) Face Massage, 5) Complimentary beverage, 6) high end grooming products. All I got was a was a regular clipper haircut - nothing else. In all fairness the stylist did offer me something to drink but I don't eat or drink while getting my hair cut. I am more accustomed to being offered something to drink while I am waiting. So I got just a plain old clipper cut for $65 + $10 tip. I won't go back again because it did not fulfill the advertising of services promised. Like I said earlier, the haircut was OK but with the number of barbers and price ranges available in San Francisco, patronizing this place is a literal waste of time and money. If you want to try this place out, I would recommend that you NOT make your appointment online. Call instead. Ask directly about the price upfront and ask what is included. Don't trust the website, you will not get what you were promised. Google maps did say that parking is difficult in this area - so I took a Lyft to get there. There was plenty of street metered parking available - so I would go ahead and drive. The barber shop is in the back of a clothing boutique so you will not see that it is a barbershop from the street. If there was a sign, I didn't see it. You will need to ask the clothing sales person that you are looking for the barbershop and they will escort you to the back. I know it sounds sketchy but it isn't, everything is open and the clothing sales guy was friendly. read more

I have known David James Salon from its Marin & SF locations but was enticed recently By a friend to check out JAMES barbershop inside of Button Down through a friend that tipped me off to it. Ken Griffin the owner is very welcoming and knowledgeable and showed me around the store. Lots of designer clothing for the holidays & if you need a pro haircut this is the place to go to. There's nowhere I can endorse for a haircut today more so than James at Button Down. My time in the chair with Jake was very pleasant, and the fade I left with might be the best I've ever had. My standard haircut is short on the sides and a little longer on top--enough so you can style it one way or another--and Jake crushed it. It's the kind of natural-looking cut where you can go home and take a shower it will still look great after. The shop itself is tucked in the back of Button Down, separate from the rest of the store. Inside they've created a really cool vibe with a classic aviation aesthetic. I'm confident I'll be back soon. read more

Slight expensive, but a better class of haircut. I've never been in there with more than 4 people. Great precise cuts however you want them, not pushy on products.
