Unbelievably bad. Got a haircut from a nice elderly gentleman. I liked the conversation and I liked the homey cozy feeling in the barbershop. However it did feel a little too cozy. There was too much junk and dirt. Nothing was clean in that place I'm giving it a one star because if you can't give a proper haircut then nothing else matters. I've been coming to the westside shop for over ten years now. But I got to say this is one of the best environments to go to when you want a cut. Not only is the staff professional and fun but they always keep you laughing, with from sports talk, to relationship issues. Nothing at the barbershop is off limits. My personal barber is Barnell, he pays such attention to detail that you end up looking like a new man once you leave. So if you need a great haircut he is the man to go to. But he's not the only one there that's really great with clippers. In fact I highly recommend all the barbers here, from Barnell to Nate. The two main fixtures at the shop. I will say I've never been let down by any one of the guys at Westside. But finally this is a locally owned barbershop with roots deeply planted in the community. Shout out to the client who couldn't make his appointment last Saturday which allowed me to walk in close to open and get my fro cleaned by Branden!! I've been getting restless with my hair and decided I would relieve myself of this stress and do something new. As a new transplant to the Bay I scoured Yelp and Google Maps for a barber or stylist that knew what to do with kinky Nigerian hair. After losing appointments with a couple of places I decided to drive to the city early Saturday with fingers crossed that I wouldn't have to go another day with my tired mane. I've never been to a barber before and didn't really know what to expect besides what I've read in reviews. I don't know the terminology for cuts but I do know how to use Google images I showed Branden the look I was going for and made game time decisions about what I wanted and this man gave my hair new life!! DO NOT GO TO THE GUY WITH THE PONYTAIL FOR A FADE. When I went they had 2 older barbers that knew what they were doing. I was new so I got set up with a younger guy that had a pony tail. He clearly had no idea what he was doing and destroyed my fade. Instead of a fade he gave me two distinct heights that look TERRIBLE. And he cut my sideburns without asking! Then he tried to charge me $30!!! It's going to take at least a month to fix this monstrosity - thinking about cutting it smh. I am perplexed as to how this barbershop has four stars, as I feel like that is a huge reach based on their customer service. Let me start by adding this review is based on customer service alone, and if I see it fitting I will include a review for the actual cut (my husband is still waiting and hasn't received one yet). We have been living in the Bay area for a little under a year and sometimes choose to explore SF via bus -- today happened to be one of those days. After deciding he needed a haircut, my husband mentioned this place and headed over via a 40-45 min bus ride. Upon walking in there was no acknowledgment of our presence. We initiated the "hellos" and were met with dry, uninterested responses. If i were not walking into a place of business, I would not have cared, but that was the first taste of sourness at Westside Cuts & Styles. Although, it was 4 minutes from closing time, we thought to ask if they were still accepting walk-ins. We received an attitude filled "Yeah, but you'll have to wait". We agreed and sat down. While waiting we uncomfortably listened to inside jokes and awkward laughs. Again, if this were not a place of business I would not care, but IT IS. I cannot imagine a patient visiting my workplace and waiting as i share inside jokes with a coworker -- jokes that reflected a tone of annoyance. Anyway, we realized we didn't have cash (we never carry it) and asked if they accepted cards -- a flat "no". We then asked if they knew where the nearest ATM was and were directed (in a half-engaged, half-irritated tone) to a place up the street. We left to get money and came right back. One of the barbers motioned for my husband to sit in his chair. Once seated he asked my husband (who has a foreign accent), if he was "okay"? Not to be mistaken for "how are you" or "you doing ok", more like "umm, what's wrong with YOU"? So my husband responded, "that's an odd question" in confusion. The barber laughed and walked away, leaving him in the chair alone, which has inspired this posting. Asking for general manners and politeness is not asking for a lot. Expecting to be then seriously as a customer is also not asking for some sort of "special privilege". Working for a small business, or large, doesn't exempt you from providing customer service. I am a customer and you are providing a service. I pay you to cut my hair as well as feel comfortable in your environment. I am greatly disappointed and disgusted in the service here, especially as a woman of color. We will not be visiting this establishment again and hope this encourages you to correct your method of handling BUSINESS. read more

I'm from LA and was in dire need of a fresh new cut while visiting the Bay. I did my research and concluded that Westside was the best choice for my fresh cut. I was 100% correct. Nate hooked me up while bumping the best jams and serving great conversation. I didn't have an appointment, just showed up and he made time for me. I've been to other places and they rushed, cutting me during my edge ups or allowing the blades to get really hot on my head, but not Nate. Thank you Yelp, for getting me to a barbershop that can deliver a good haircut. Your reviews told me to talk to Brandon or Nate. I show up and Nate had a few customers waiting, but Brandon was open. I hop in the chair, told him what I wanted and before you know it, I have a solid haircut with a nice tight line. There was another barber there, (sorry i didn't get his name) but he looked like he also knew a thing or two about working with some clippers. I will definitely be back for another cut because its in walking distance and easily accessible on the muni lines. The only reason you guys get 4 stars is because $25 for a cut is a bit pricey. I have to say I was impressed with the hair cut I got here. It is really hard to find a barber shop that will cut a brothas hair, let alone cut it good. I was told about this place via a friend and was told to check them out. Nate the barber was really nice and pays great attention to detail. He was warm and welcoming to the new guy, which you do not really see in a black barbershop. I told him what I wanted and he hooked it up. Matt's Barbershop in Bgame was super busy so I decided to venture to a new place in my neighborhood. A quick check of Yelp reviews showed that this spot was the most well received. I walked over and I asked a man outside if they were open. He said they were and I said I wanted a fade. He told me he'd fix me up. The 2 people inside must have been waiting for the other 2 barbers. I asked for a 2 on the side to a fade. He did a good job. A lot of attention to detail. I even got my sideburns shaped for the first time. He also did a line at the top which I am still adjusting to because it's my first time. The place was small, cozy, and the banter was good barber shop style. Loud rap music playing but we could still talk. Chatted a lot about basketball. I will return again if Matt's is busy again. I paid $25 here when I usually get charged $20 in Burlingame. read more

This is a very small barbershop tucked away by many nearby barbershops, liquor stores, and restaurants. This is a two chair shop both African American gentleman, one young one old but both very friendly. I've gotten my hair lined and cut by both and I feel their skills are mostly comparable. However the older gentleman seems to a little more time efficient with his clips. The shop could be cleaned up a little cosmetically and also there's never a consistent price every time I come which has varied from $8-$15 for a line up with undercut design. read more

What can I say? Been in SF for 2 1/2 yrs now, had tried a few spots around my area, but knew I had found my permanent barbershop as soon as I walked into Westside Cuts & Style. First and foremost, this is a locally-owned barbershop with a deep history in the community, and for me, it's important to support locally. And that history is evident throughout the shop. The barbers, the ambience, the customers: it's clear that Westside Cuts is a family, and at the same time, run by professional, friendly, folks, all of 'em excellent at their craft. Facts: for a quality cut, shape-up, or style, you won't find a cheaper price in this expensive city. It's a historically black barbershop w/ predominantly black customers, but I'm Latino, and have always seen this place full of customers and friends from all backgrounds...Latino, Asian, White, Filipino, Arab, etc. I only say that to say this: these barbers are familiar with and cut ALL different types of hairs, and I've never EVER seen a disappointed customer there. My barber there is Brandon, a laid-back, professional, and young but experienced barber who's always cut my hair to my specifications, and always seems to exceed my expectations when stylin' a great fauxhawk fade that no one else has come close to. In fact, I'm constantly movin' between here and Sac, and do everything I can to come to Westside for my cuts. With my steady barber, the way I like my hair is just an understanding, so when I'm out of town in need to look fresh, I stress about it. I didn't want to wait so I sat in the front chair - something I've never done before today - fearing the worst, but was pleasantly surprised. Darron was steady, careful, and detailed. Although it was about the slowest cut I've ever sat for, he was mad precise which I'll take over speed any day. He hooked up the shadow fade and the shape up the way I like. I moved to SF in May 2012 and had been nervous about finding a reliable barber in SF. As a POC and being REALLY picky about my hair/how my hair is cut I took a chance on Westside. I am EXTREMELY proud to say that I have NEVER left disappointed. I went the first time and was surprised. I went a second time and was impressed. And now, having gone a third time these guys KNOW what's up. Professional, timely, and able to cut your hair the way you want (AND THEN SOME). I've been getting cut by Branden who is super nice, reliable, cute and responsible about scheduling. Couldn't ask for a better barber. It's REALLY hard to find a good barber (being a woman with a short hair cut). Not only is Branden awesome, so is everyone else at the shop. I'd suggest calling the day before and making an appointment. Since they're good at what they do there can be a line. Met a gentleman by the name of Branden, real nice guy (handsome guy btw). Asked him if he can cut my 2 boys' hair as such short notice and he squeezed us in. I went get a cut for the very first time at Westside Cuts today, not knowing what to expect. Thank goodness I walked through those doors and ended in Nate's chair because he HOOKED ME UP big time! I went from "12 Years A Slave" to the next Idris Elba in 25 minutes, hahaha. Seriously, one of the best haircuts I've had in a long time. Nate put a lot of detail into his work and it shows. 1 star for the gentleman in the fitted that acknowledged my presence only after I walked in & looked around (1st time here) awkwardly for about a minute...let's see. So moving along after not being acknowledged and saying hello to everyone in the space that was rapidly growing tinier as I could feel the homophobia in the air...man. all I wanted was a haircut. I yelp everything and I wanted was to get a haircut from someone who looked like me. I sought out this establishment to support because we live in a country and especially this city, where black lives don't matter in the eyes of most. I wanted to support my brothers. Instead I got, I'm all booked up, check with the rest. Fair enough. I look around and none of the other two barbers looked up once. So I'm standing here still trying to figure out if this lack of customer service is even real (the reviews were so good! That's why I came by :( & I sit on this bench. Stuck for about 30 seconds. I look and the gentleman at the last station, probably out of pity, says I can cut later. Guy in the middle seat, nothing still. I ask, like what time, though? (Because: work) and after the long silence I hear a grumpy and unwelcoming: just sit right there. As I'm bothering him. Sorry my queer presence bothers you and absolutely not will you ever get a dime of my money with that type of attitude, treatment, behavior, etc. etc. etc. Damn, I really wanted to make you guys my new favorite shop. & blog about it. Went here after having a horrible experience at Chicago's directly across the street. I was very happy to find this place. Got a cut from Barnell, who is very good with the clippers. I was very satisfied with the finishing product. Loved the chill atmosphere and the shit-talking, reminded me of my barbershop back home in NYC. Barnell is a cool cat that will remember your name. Although the prices for a cut + beard lining are about $25, that is pretty standard for the Bay. I would give this place 5 stars if the prices were more like NYC prices. Avoid this place at all costs. The owner, manager, and head barber is NOT punctual and doesn't communitcate with his customers if he's running late. Back in December, I contacted him and asked him if I could come in Saturday at 10am for a haircut. He agreed. Me and my cousin waited 2 plus hours and he finally showed up. Keep in mind, I contacted him several times before he showed up to let him know I was at the shop. No answer. A guy came in and said that this barber was in Alabama on vacation. Now if you're running a place of business, isn't it your job to let your customers know you're running late so they wont be waiting 2 hours. Luckly another barber got me in and what do you know, he shows up while I'm getting my cut without a care in the world. No apolgies or nothing. In my opinion this guy has a conceaded stuck up arrogant attitude. Bad enough you have to make appointments with barbers nowadays when you used to just walk in, get a cut, and be out in 20 minutes depending on the cut and other things. I moved to San Fran a few months ago and I ended up looking all over the place to find a Barbershop or salon that could cut an African American's hair. I stumbled upon this place one night after heading home from a party and figured within a couple of days I would give the place a shot. The interior of the place is outdated to say in the least, but the barber who cut my hair, Nate, made all of the difference. He was nice, treated me with respect, had lots of knowledge on haircare and did an amazing job on my hair!
