My review of david Fogle is long over due. Several of my friends recommended that I go see him to get my haircut and told me how amazing he is. I was frankly skeptical. How amazing can he be? Well, I am glad I gave him a try. There is definitely a difference between a master stylist with his Vidal Sassoon training vs most other stylists. Not only was my haircut amazing, David also solved a huge mystery for me about my hair. After giving birth to my second child, my hair just didn't feel the same. It felt rough and I began to accept that maybe I am just getting old and so is my hair. I am not that old. I missed the silkiness of my hair and pretty much gave up thinking I can get it back until I saw david. As part of the appt, not only does he cut my hair but he started by educating me about my hair which no stylist ever done before. He showed me the back of my hair and said "see the breakage and roughness there?" I said sadly yes. Then he asked, "do you put your hair in a ponytail much?" I thought about it and then said yes. "Well, that's why there is so much breakage right around your ponytail position". It dawned on me that OMG, my hair roughness is caused by that as I started a habit of wearing a ponytail most nights when I sleep after birth of my second kid. So I am not getting old. I caused the breakage and didn't even connect the dots. I was so HAPPY. ;-). Still am. My hair is silky again after a few cuts once all the breakage grew out. Yay! The best part is for someone with david training his prices are still pretty reasonable and he spends 90 min meticulously and a perfectionist over my hair. I felt like a princess again. I've been getting my hair cut by David for some time--a real artist with hair--and recently he moved to a new salon. He had described it as being like sitting in someone's living room, almost a "speakeasy" of hair. After my first trip in, I can say the vibe is beyond expectations. The art direction and general style of Tokyo's new salon is exactly the kind of stuff that makes San Francisco great. Top quality talent, the best products (Sachajuan), and a remarkably art directed space create a top notch experience. Tokyo, Green and David are all super talented and super nice. I have long and straight hair and Shannon is excellent. She cuts my hair in a way that allows me to air dry and still make my hair look 'done'. She uses all natural hair products that are totally reasonable and do not break the bank (her recommendation for me I bought at Walgreens in a BOGO deal!). She is wonderful to talk to too -- she's inspiring, provides helpful perspective and wants you to be the best version of yourself inside and out. I have to second the comments of Zack S. I've always gone to Supercuts or Great Clips to get my hair cut quick and cheap. In all of that time, I've been compromising quality for cost. Now I go to Dave at TokyoSF about every 6 weeks and he dials my hair in, leaving me a very satisfied client every...single...time. I live in San Jose, and the quality of his cuts are worth the drive. It's not just about his cuts though. Dave has educated me about my hair and has taught me how to style it with just the right amount of product and attention. Dave says, "don't put too much product in your hair and don't spend more than about 1 minute styling it when you put the product in." That's been a huge revelation for me. I'm now able to style my hair after a shower much nicer than I ever have in the past. As for the studio, it's awesome. It's a quaint little spot right on California St. between Larkin and Polk. You get a very personal experience here. As another reviewer (Zack S) mentioned, there is cool art on the walls and they have a record player. Yes...the old black vinyl discs with grooves carved into them that play music. The thing is, the sound system is premium quality, so the music sounds great. We were listening to a little Radiohead on this day. What was even cooler was that the studio only seats two people at a time. So when I was getting my hair cut, there was this cute girl next to me getting hers cut too. Over the course of the hour and half Dave spent cutting my hair, some good conversation and some good laughs were had between the four of us. So glad I discovered TokyoSF years ago, David ended up being my go-to guy for nearly 3 years. Both Tokyo & David ended up being like family and it was definitely a bummer saying goodbye as I moved to NYC. While David books a long time in advance, you can just book multiple appointments for the future and if you become a regular, he can usually squeeze you into his schedule. One huge thing that I loved was that he spends about 45 minutes to properly cut your hair, which I really appreciate. I hate the $50 haircut you get in SF that takes 5minutes as they just churn people in and out. He knows his stuff, explains what he's doing, and is simply the best I've ever had. I live in Mountain View, and the wonderful local vidal sassoon trianed hair dresser that usually cuts my hair has taken a leave of absence for health reasons, so when I was ready to update my 'look' (from really long hair, to shoulder length), I trusted Tokyo for the job in April 13'! Prior to making an appointment, I should mention that I've met almost 10 other people that gets their hair cut by Tokyo and raved about his haircuts! Of course they all looked great too! I got my hair cut by David. My hair is awful. Like, it might as well be silk threads, it's so thin and limp. Suffice it to say, I have never before in my entire life been satisfied with what I look like after a haircut. In the past, I've always ran home immediately, to apply all the products/home remedies to make my hair look less awful and to remedy any damage done by a new length. The only reason I ever got my hair cut was because eventually the silk threads would get too long to brush out every day, and they would border on dreads. Very limp, very soft dreads. After reading all the reviews here, I decided to give my hair one more chance and trust David. Because of the placement of the power outlets/length of the cords at the station, I was sitting facing away from the mirror, so I didn't really see what was going on on my head until it was ready. At the end, David turned my chair around and my god. . . my hair... it looked... amazing! Like, I couldn't believe that that was my hair. Those previously flaccid strands were now holding a wave and my bangs looked so Aniston (circa season 10 of Friends)! David talked to me about my hair, about the products I use, told me some techniques I could try. There was no judgment, no hurry, I had his undivided attention. Basically, the entire experience was wonderful, and now, I'm a believer. For sure. Thank you, David, so much!!! (P.S. washed my hair the next day, applied some techniques that David suggested, and the dramatic effect of the visit is far from worn off. I have always worn my hair long with layers. I came to Tokyo to get my style more updated while keeping its length. While I was not expecting any earth moving but after what seemed like a lot of snipping off, the end result made me squeal with delight and I've never had that kind of a reaction to any haircut. The length of my hair remained but the shape beautifully framed my face and fell on my back sexily like a Victoria's Secret angel. If only I had a body to match it. Aside from that I learned curling iron-free techniques that I can do on myself while blow drying my hair. Very much worth the wait. read more

This was the worst haircut I ever had, I'm practically in frustrated tears everyday because I don't know how to grow this mess out. I asked for volume/height/body, said I hated how other stylists over texturize my hair and make choppy layers, and David proceeds to do the EXACT thing I said I just said I hated. Worse than that, he took a razor to the shaft of my hair and ends and scraped it down. My hair is now in thin, stringy, layers with choppy ends AND the hair is extremely frayed and damaged all along the hair shaft. A few people asked me if I tried to cut my hair myself and failed. I'm not the type to stop a stylist in between while they are cutting, I just explain in detail what I want, what I like, what I hate, show pictures, and hope I can trust in their expertise from there. This was a disaster and now I'm miserable and doomed to wear my hair in a bun for who knows how long. read more

Do you know what a good guy is? I'll tell you. Let's say you are told you have to get a haircut for you new job. Additionally, it's mentioned that "you should do something about those gray hairs." Not kidding. Such is my profession. I know nothing about hair, less about "doing something" about a specific type of hair. So, there I am meeting David for the first time. I tell him my odd story. He asks a host of questions to help narrow what I should do next. Long and short of it, we picked out a style that will help down the road. He also called a friend of his to get me a consult on the "gray hairs" issue. (He doesn't do color.) I must have been there at least 45 minutes. At the end David turns to me and says, "you didn't need much of a hair cut, so, no charge." Now remember, this was the first time he's met me. Let that sink in for a second. Of course I paid him anyway. He refused to take it. I insisted. He took only enough for "lunch." I come from a truly old school East Coast family, that I escaped long ago. But, every now and then someone does something that makes me remember how gentlemen, smart gentlemen behave. David's an artist with his work, and a truly good guy. read more

I had made an appointment, and when I arrived I explained that I have been growing out my bangs and also that I'm getting married in a few months - so I wasn't sure how much I should get my hair cut today considering the hairstyle I want to have at my wedding in a few months. He said that leaving my hair longer would give me more options on the big day, and also that my hair didn't look super in need of a cut. He gave me some styling tips and put some volumizing stuff in it and added texture to my hair, and I walked out with my hair looking great! Totally appreciate his honesty! Let me start by saying I have thick, crazy, unruly hair, and I am very picky when it comes to hair stylists. When I lived in South Bay, it took me years to find a place I was SATISFIED with, and even then, it didn't really cut it. I couldn't get an appointment with Tokyo for a couple months, so I went ahead and booked with Shannon Kehoe. Let me tell you, this was one of the best decisions I've ever made! Shannon is now the only person I will allow to put scissors on my hair, and I only need to go once every 3 months. David Fogle deserves a noble peace prize for expert hair advising in high crisis moments. It's never good to break up on the same day as getting your hair cut, I know this. But I'm impulsive and its hard to resist my worst intentions :/ I came in set on chopping off the locks that I had worked months to grow after David's deft transitional (short to bob) haircut 6 months previously (seriously I've never had a haircut grow out so well- I have wavy, thick hair). All saddled up and ready to roll, David stops me, looks and sees clearly that I'm making the wrong choice. Advising me against getting the very haircut I was just about to pay him for. Overall, a reputable salon with high-quality cuts. I booked an appointment with David because of Yelp, and I was very impressed with the skill and detail he put into my cut. He asked me about the look that I was going for and actually listened, and even after a few months, my cut looked great and held its shape. The way that he styled my hair that day was great as well, and I emailed him the next day to find out what type of product he put into it. He actually sent me links of where I could purchase the item online and told me where to find it for the lowest price, which I thought was awesome and helpful. The venue itself is a hipster-type design that feels homey and comfortable without being over staged. I would definitely recommend going to David if you're looking for a precision cut and are okay with spending a decent amount to get a cut that will last. In my experience of getting many short haircuts, most hairstylists (SF, NYC, LA) don't listen, assume they know your head of hair better than you, over texturize and go crazy with thinning shears, razors and shavers! I've been to both Tokyo and David, now, after getting butchered-bad haircuts on my travels. They not only listen, they understand that it's most important to give a good technical cut, first, then add a little artistry.
