Made an appointment here as a referral from my primary care physician because I went clubbing in Vegas over both Memorial Day and Independence Day long weekends and it felt like there was fluid buildup behind my eardrums in addition to reduced hearing (especially high frequencies). Very nice office staff, and they were able to see me in very short order! :-) Dr. Wu came into the examination room with a colleague who he then asked to examine my ears. She was very thorough and even set up a hearing tone test immediately afterward. I've always had to schedule separate appointments for those, so I was REALLY happy to be able to do it so quickly! The end result is that my hearing was indeed affected by all that clubbing and that I should take it easy as I'm also getting older. All that said, I think I'm going to schedule annual visits here since I've always had ear problems when I was a little kid (back then I apparently had an ear infection that almost killed me, but I don't remember any of it since I was so young). I've got tinnitus, too, and I'm thinking the chickens are coming home to roost with all the problems I had when I was little. So annual checkups it is! read more

Dr. Wu was awesome when we saw him yesterday. My husband was recently in a car accident and we last minute we're trying to find a doctor to remove the glass that was still in his head. Dr. Wu squeezed us in and made time for us and did a great job being efficient and effective with the procedure. We really appreciate his efforts and his staff and receptionist, Virginia, was amazing. I saw some reviews on here mentioning his attitude but honestly I didn't get that vibe from him at all. According to doctor Wu: "20 million or possibly more people suffer from Tinnitus in the country; there is no cure, no medication, no surgery." I visited Dr. James Wu two times in 2019 for some ear problems. I just want to say that it is very clear to me that Dr. Wu is one of the most thorough and knowledgeable people in the field, despite our few interactions; he was able to immediately diagnose and solve my problem when I had previously visited several other physicians who failed to solve my problems. He is also very caring; one time I asked his front desk a question that they couldn't answer, and he called me after he was off for the day and answered my questions thoroughly. The name is Wu. James Wu. Okay, I'll stop with the bad jokes. Sparing details except to say I had incredible, awful headaches, treated as migraine for years. Several months ago the headaches increased to daily and then, 'round the clock. Agony. When migraine meds stopped working I had a CT scan of my sinuses, after which I was immediately referred to Dr. Wu. I'm fairly chicken and was already in pain so when surgery entered the picture I was panicked. Dr. Wu tried one course of the most conservative treatment, though we both thought it was a long shot, yet wanted to be sure we'd done everything else before operating. I had the surgery (more details spared - you'll thank me) and though I wouldn't do it for entertainment, it was nearly painless. Just as good was Dr. Wu's meticulous follow-up which included daily calls for a short period to check on me and answer emerging and/or lingering questions. Pretty unbelievable. His staff is great, his offices (San Carlos & Daly City) run pretty close to on-time, and the pre-surgical insurance rigamarole went flawlessly. Best yet, no headache since the moment I awakened in the recovery room. Now I only see his smiling face as needed. Except I don't need... Highly skilled and current in his field. Detail oriented and willing to take time to explain procedures - or not - depending on level of patient squeamishness. Since I rate high on the latter, video orientation declined. Explanation was more than enough. Yuck. Highly recommend for any ENT issues. Really wonderful experience in a difficult situation. read more

Dealt with my 89 year old mom and he had the audacity to sigh in resignation that she wasn't getting better. Sorry to inconvenience you doc but you swore an oath to help people if I'm not mistaken. My first visit to Dr. Wu was an unplanned emergency visit while in the throes of vertigo. Although I was a work-in appointment (it may have even been a Friday afternoon), he neither appeared rushed nor inconvenienced by my unplanned visit. Dr. Wu was patient, calm, and thorough in his exam and made sure I was well informed of diagnosis and treatment options. I'm grateful he was there for me when I needed him, and have since been back for cosmetic treatments, which is more fun than vertigo. Really sad that there are doctors like him out there. Not willing to help people with real health problems. It seems that he is more interested in cosmetic surgery than patients who have health problems. I was a patient a couple years ago with ringing in my ear. Off coarse I was very frightened and conserned and all I got from him was " sorry there is nothing I can do and you will loose your hearing." I was devastated. I immediately seeked a second opinion and my hearing in completely back and no more ringing. So happy to have found a real doctor. Now my father has gone to see "dr" Wu after being in the E.R with severe nose bleed and this doctor again is not doing anything for him. my father after three weeks is still bleeding constantly and will see another specialist. Dr Wu has been our ENT for the last few years. My husband has complicated issues stemming from his childhood and I have impacted ear wax. Unfortunately we had to switch to Covered California. Not only did we find him exceptional but also his office staff. That seems hard to find these days. I just went to him today for help since I know he can do the job and his staff is accommodating. I had issues with another ENT nearby. Basically not listening nor doing their job. They worked with me and once again I can hear. I appreciate the attentiveness and the concern. This is the review for the receptionist/billing lady. My doctor referred Dr Wu for checking up my throat problem. I was not sure if the doctor is inside my insurance network, so I called in and asked the lady who picked up the phone. I told her I was on the Anthem BlueCross EPO plan, then she said they are in the BlueCross PPO network, not the EPO plan. I said these two are the same network, the only difference is EPO does not cover the outside network. She insisted that is not true. So I called my insurance company to confirm if my understanding is correct, then my insurance company confirmed that is the case, so I called back the clinic again explaining to them that I am covered. Again she did not believe me and said if she make an appointment for me, then they will charge me later. I am so confused and called my insurance company again and my insurance company explained that the clinic can call them directly. So I called back the clinic again and asked the lady if she can call my insurance company to verify that I am covered. The lady REFUSED to call my insurance company and said the insurance company should call her instead to verify it. At this point, I am so shocked, I could not understand why someone is so unwilling to take the business, I am sure her employer would be so regret that they hired her, basically she is pushing the patients/customers out behind their back. Now I just made appointment with the San Francisco Ear Nose and Throat Med Group, and the lady on the phone checked up my insurance quickly in the system and confirmed that I am covered while on the phone. Unclear Charge issue. My husband had one ear ringing, and went to see him, he said nothing is wrong. A couple of days later, my husband got the second opinion from another doctor who said there is some liquid in his ear(She didn't send any bill to us.) And I called Dr. Wu back and reformed him. Then he called back and asked my husband to see him again, then my husband did so, he insisted that everything is normal. Then a couple of months later, we got a bill which didn't explain anything about what kind of services he offered when my husband visited him. I called his office once and asked for giving us a detailed description about the service they might provide. Unfortunately they never did that. We are guessing he may overcharge us. I cannot express the to the masses on how much better I feel. I had my Turbinates reduced in size to assist with my breathing. Turbinates are sacks in within your nasal cavity that heat up the air prior to air reaching your lungs. I was referred to him by my Primary Care Physician. PCP, after years of misery and headaches with the treatment of nasal steroids having little and diminishing affects on my health. I saw the doctor, he was very professional and made me feel at ease. Of course my medical insurance was and is horrible so they covered basically nothing and the costs were reasonable from what my research had come up with. If you have sleep apnea or just have trouble breathing, see a doctor who has given me more sore to breath for the rest of my life. read more

I'm confused why Dr. Wu has such low ratings on Yelp. I definitely give him five stars. People on here complain about his front desk staff but of the three times that I've gone to this office in the last year, they've always been fast, pleasant, and very helpful. I've gone to Dr. Wu for inner ear and vertigo issues. Though he doesn't come off as super friendly or up for a chat, Dr. Wu absolutely knows what he's doing and gives an honest diagnosis with treatment that works. He knew exactly what I was dealing with each time I went to see him, helped with my vertigo, and prescribed medication to help with my inner ear issues. Also, you can make appointments online through ZocDoc which is so convenient! I've generally been able to find an appointment for the next day and it's so easy to see his open appointments online. Woohoo Dr. Wu :) My first experience seeing Dr. Wu was great. He is a very knowledgeable doctor. Dr. Wu does a thorough evaluation and doesn't give you unneeded medications. Dr. Wu also explains everything he finds during evaluation and he is very pleasant and you can ask him many questions and he is understanding. I have seen Dr. Wu a few more times and I give him my highest doctor rating patient relationship rating. I have health insurance and his practice accepts my health insurance therefore I have no complaints only praise. The whole staff is really very nice and I sat there and got to know them while I waited for my appointment. His staff has a lot of patience and they go out of their way to accommodate their patients. read more

I would never recommend or come back. I came here because he was covered under my insurance and because a doctor I trust recommended him. I asked him if everything was covered. Did not explain to me before hand that I would owe him over 1000$ for the procedure. I was making 50$-100$ payments on it. Still got sent to collections. Now dealing with the never ending phone calls from this stupid collections. Also, the surgery he performed on my lip, I now have no feeling on that side of my lip and his stitching was a little messed up also. Crappy experience, on top of every single follow up and that he scheduled with me to come back to the office required a copay. Even a minor visit to inspect the area and was out in less than 5 minutes. Hardly worth the time. read more

Dr. Wu's staff got me into the office with less than an hour's notice after I requested a second opinion on Bohdan Makarewycz's bogus-sounding diagnosis/treatment plan for my persistent cough and hoarseness. The only thing these two doctors have in common is their specialization. Where Dr. Makarewycz rushed through a 10- or 15-minute exam at each of my two visits, Dr. Wu spent 45 minutes doing a very thorough exam (with modern equipment) and asking a lot of intelligent questions, and he made sure that I got MY questions answered. Where Dr. M disrespected my use of the neti pot, Dr. Wu approved of it and in fact also suggested that I investigate other alternative therapies. Where Dr. M wanted to do tests that really didn't seem warranted and even mumbled things about GERD and esophageal dysplasia and abdominal surgery (!!!!), Dr. Wu suggested a much more conservative treatment plan and asked me to consult with my allergist as well since she's much more familiar with my long-term health issues. Highly recommended. His staff loves him, too. read more

First time I seen Dr. Wu was when I was 8months pregnant in july 2016, I have always suffered from allergies and constant nose bleeds and as well self esteem issues due to my nose shape but extra hormonal during pregnancy as well when I got pregnant it got worse so I decided to see a ENT specialist so I did, I seen Dr.Wu he was very friendly and his staff as well friendly and so he took a look and finally I know why I have such a bad time with allergies and nose bleeds I have a deviated septum and I do want it to be fixed and as well fix make my nose smaller he did say he can do it so I hope to see him and go over the details I have a follow up apt next week and i hope Dr. Wu can make me look beautiful because I have always suffered from allergies along with low self esteem and as well got bullied due to my nose shape. I got referred to see him by another doctor who I like. I was told that I was in the network and later on got hit with a big bill? All he did was prescribe me with some pills for a sinus infection, which I didn't take because the pills were too big. I ended up taking local honey to get rid of my sinuses. read more

Dr.Wu may be a good doctor, but I was never able to use him because his surgery schedule is so limited and did not fit into my schedule. I had to book an appt. with another doctor and when I asked for my records to be faxed to the new Dr. , the office did not do it. So then I asked for the records to be sent to me, which I am legally entitled to and the staff still has not done it. When I received a bill from his office, I called and wrote them to let them know that that I was waiting to receive my records before I paid the bill. I was told that I could not have my records until the bill was paid. So, my records are being held hostage by his staff. If you need a doctor that has a staff that is willing to help you. Dr Wu and his staff are awesome!! I have a major problem with anxiety and after going through MRI and CT scans ( & that wasn't easy either) Dr. Wu informed me that I had a case of chronic maxillary sinusitis . We tried antibiotics and nasal steroids to no avail. So the next step was surgery, which I decided to forgo. Over a year later, along with a few appointments in between, I decided to go ahead with the surgery. Unfortunately, I had to undergo another scan since a year had.passed Through all this, appointments were made and follow up phone calls etc, all the while with Dr. Wu's staff being so patient and so understanding. Dr. Wu's professionalism and knowledge (and patience) made an enormous impact on going forward with my surgery. Dr. Wu has been informative/educational with an ongoing problem re: swallowing/food getting stuck, ( thought it was Achalasia ), and after having multiple tests, turned out to be a slightly kinked/crooked heart artery near my throat which pushes against the upper esophagus -- he brought out the pix and showed me the problem. We both agreed at this time there is really nothing that can be done other than the age old 'grin and bear it' -- don't like it, but hardly involves surgery... I can't make a comment about his cosmetic procedures as I saw him as an ENT doctor, and for that, he was clear, concise and comprehensive !!! read more

This man is a butcher. do not allow him to perform surgery on you. I made the mistake of trusting Dr. Wu. I went in for functional endoscopic surgery and a biopsy of a small growth. and came out worse than when i went in. He took it upon himself to do multiple procedures with out my concent or knowlege. Even after the surgery he did not inform me of what extra work he had done. I had pain and green mucous for a long time after the surgery, i kept going back to Dr, Wu complaining of pain and i knew i had an infection. He kept saying i was fine and didnt understand why i was in pain.. He kept saying i should be healed.. and dismissed me.. I finally went to two other doctors. both said that the surgery that was done was "UNNEEDED" and should not have been done, and i did have a bad infection as i thought,. Much later i got to see the notes from the surgery and learned he did surgery on my septum- with out my knowlege-it is still not healed and this happend Dec 2010... He also removed some tissue from my sinus called turbanate tissue and reconstructed it with out my consent or knowlegde. THERE WAS NEVER AND CONVERSATION of this. he never mentioned it before of after the surgery.... I made the mistake of not getting a second opinion because i was in so much pain at the time, i thought this doctor was going to help me.. When i confronted him to ask him why he had done this, he would not answer the question. he just looked at me and changed the subject, i asked again this time about the septum surgery, he said "it just means it was crooked" wtf? really? this is a over a year later and still gave no explanation. accoriding to my current doc...this was a huge screw up on DR WU's part. and im am ill suffering for it.. im still in pain, and not healed. i have been doing medicated iragations of the sinus for a long time, i cant even blow my nose with out pain. every moring i wake up. one side or the other is swollen to where i cant breathe.......please do not trust this man. and AWAYS get a second opinion. read more

I am extremely critical and have received the best diagnostic and txmt from Dr. Wu. He explains thouroughly and his office staff is extremely polite , professional and accommodating to the patients. He also gave a second opinion to my own family members and was on board c previous treatment by another ENT . I have utmost confidence in him having both experienced his treatment and have been witness to his outstanding surgical skills repairing anatomical defects along c outstanding cosmetic results. read more

I went to Dr. Wu's office because I had a slight ringing in my right ear. He looked inside my nose for 10 secs, and then proceeded to clean my right ear. The entire office visit was no more than 15 mins. I was charged over $1000, I was shocked, $1000 REALLY!!! His prices are outrageous, and he can do it because the insurance companies will pay it. No one should get paid $1000 for 15 mins to do what he did. HE IS A RIP OFF, not only ripping off his patients, but ripping off the insurance companies. DO NOT GO TO HIM!!!!! read more

I went to his office to have my tonsils checked because i had tonsillitis, He did not care about it and showed no interest , hes body language, the way he talk. Easily the worst display of professionalism by a doctor that I have ever experienced. I sat in his waiting room for 40 minutes past my appointed time, when the receptionist told me they were going to charge me $50 co-pay. My co-pay is $15...always has been. I was told they would contact my insurance company tomorrow to try to work it out. I was STILL willing to see this guy, since I just took time off work and had waited so long. But when I noticed we were approaching an hour past my appointment time, I confirmed my appointment and asked the receptionist if it was common that the doctor typically ran that late. Before she had a chance to reply, Wu came out of nowhere and snatched some paperwork out of a file shelf and snapped "it's because we had to wait for your paperwork!". He then scurried off without affording me a single courtesy. I was nearly speechless, but I thanked the receptionist for her efforts to assist me and stated that I would not be treated by such a rude and unprofessional person. I left his office. read more

Dr. Wu is one of the best doctors I have ever experienced!! I had been trying to treat a terrible sinus infection for months, including months of antibiotics. I knew that I needed to see a great ENT doctor, and after seeing his amazing reviews I decided to make an appointment with Dr. Wu. Great decision!! During the initial exam Dr. Wu was very informative, patient and extremely gently during the exams. He shows you graphs, explains in detail all the information about treatments...and... without a rush to hurry you along! After a CT scan he personally called me to talk about my options, suggesting an outpatient surgery. I delayed the surgery for 6 weeks until the pain started to get worse by the week, I chose to have the suggested surgery on my maxillary sinus (on lower cheek above teeth.) WOW!! What a difference this has made in my life. I heard horror stories about this surgery and pulling the packing a few days after surgery. I had one day of mild pain and saw him the day after surgery, pretty much painless to remove upper nose gauze. Packing in other sinus areas would dissolve. Within a few days I was feeling great and it has now been over 2 weeks.... I feel amazing. Also, since this infection was slowly draining into my entire system, my health has vastly improved as well. Dr. Wu is a 5* doctor who deserves the highest praise as far as his professionalism, his wonderful accommodating office staff and his thorough, informative, kind and caring expertise.
