My wife consulted this doctor for a hip problem. During the consultation, the doctor injected her with lidocaine and cortisol without using ultrasound guidance. Instead, he inserted the needle and then took an X-ray afterward to verify the placement (ex post facto). Unfortunately, something went wrong, which worsened her condition and increased her pain. I tried to contact him for the next week to seek guidance. After 10 days, he finally answered my call, but he was very irritated and started yelling at me. When I asked him to calm down and lower his voice, he warned me that he wouldn't say anything more and then hung up the call. I don't know if he was having a bad day, but that's no excuse to treat patients --or anyone-- like that. read more

Not trustworthy. He totally wrote a false report regarding my pain and injuries. Stating I was basically faking my need to walk with a cane. Stated that I did not have any walking apparatus when I came into his office. The saddest part is that I had assistance to help me get to, in, and out of his office. He said I did not have any disabilities... and the list goes on! I only wish that his claims were true. I want my like and mobility back. This creepy attitude throws you into a state of depression ‍‍ I'm sure he gets paid to lie and fabricate exams!!! When I got tossed off my horse and ended up in the E.R. DR Gasho was the attending orthopedist. He took a look at my X-rays and and yeah just as my twisted finger indicated.. Broken. I was gonna need pins and so the hospital gave me him as a referral and I'm really happy they did. DR Gasho is not only knowledge, friendly with a dash of charm but hes a no BS kinda DR. He gives it to ya straight but always with a smile. I'm not an insurance person, I was paying for this surprise medical care all out of pocket and DR Gasho worked double time to give me options I could afford to fix up my broken self. Not a lot of people would do that but he did. His office staff are amazingly nice and they always remember me. My surgery which I was super nervous about went off without a hitch. DR Gasho was patient with me and my nerves and got me out of there fast. He even helped me take camera phone pics of my post surgery wired up hand so i could gross out family and friends on Facebook. That's going the extra mile for sure! All my follow ups were on schedule and went super smooth from scheduling, to office wait, to x-rays, to billing. I was actually kinda sad when he said i didn't have to come back anymore. If you wanna be mollycoddled by some god complexed, daddy type, he might not be your guy, but if you want a GOOD doctor who knows what he's doing, has a great staff and will work with you and your needs all while smiling.. then run don't walk to DR Gasho if you ever need an orthopedist. I came to see Dr. Gasho earlier this spring. My friends who had broken bones, torn ligaments, etc. had recommended him so I gave them a call and made an appointment. The receptionists were very friendly and helpful and were nice enough to squeeze me in. Dr. Gasho was a cool guy. His hair was sorta long (like nearly to his shoulder) and gray. He wore very bold color shirt and tie combos and was very relaxed. The funniest part about him, I'd say was when his cell phone rang, I couldn't believe what his ringtone was! I actually don't remember now what song it was, but it was some sort of ridiculous rap song and I almost fell off of the table laughing. Anyway... I had been having a lot of trouble with my hands and wrists. I know I have arthritis already (I was told this at my previous ortho doc when I had surgery on my wrist in 11th grade) but I had wondered if I had somehow managed to have carpal tunnel syndrome. I had pain in my hands all the time, even if I wasn't doing anything but sitting. Sometimes while doing the simplest things - like opening my wallet or picking up a frying pan, my hand would almost do a spasm like thing and sharp shooting numbing pains would go up to my elbow and back. Dr. Gasho took x-rays...they showed nothing. He gave me celebrex...which made my arms hurt. He then put me on a new prescription that sort of worked for awhile and he also had me going to physical therapy. Unfortunately, I was about to graduate college when I was seeing him and my parent's insurance wouldn't cover me once I graduated...so I had to stop attending PT and seeing him for a new prescription. We never did figure out for sure what was wrong with my hands at the time, but hopefully now that I have insurance again, I can go back and see what is up. The reason I gave 3 stars was because I felt like even though he knew the time period was short (bc of my insurance being up), I thought he could have done more tests (like an MRI) or something to figure out what was wrong instead of just giving me anti-inflammatories. Yes, the prescription helped a bit...but my hands still hurt and I don't know why. read more

I wouldn't trust anyone else with my knees. I've had 3 knee surgeries: 2 ACL reconstructions (left in Sept 2003 and right in June 2010) and a meniscus scope (June 2006) and Dr. Gasho performed all of these. He's an excellent surgeon, really easy to talk to, and you can get in to see him within 24-48 hours. He'll also take the time to email you back if you write him with questions. I know a lot of people who have had their ACLs done, and it's surprising how varied surgeons are in their post-op approaches. I'd say Dr. Gasho is fairly aggressive--you start PT in 1 week, and he lets you walk on the leg (with your brace of course) the day of the surgery if you can handle the pain. I know people who have been advised to use their crutches for 2-4 weeks! I haven't had any issues with the ACL reconstructions (one using a cadaver ligament and one using my own patella tendon graft). My knees are very stable, and I can play any sport without thinking twice about it. If you've got any sort of knee pain (or any other joint or back pain) that's not going away, be sure to see Dr. Gasho. read more

It has been a few months since my knee surgery and I have yet to go back to Dr. Gasho for a follow up. As a matter of fact I have no intention of going back to him and am actively seeking a new orthopedist that accepts my insurance. My physical therapist gave me a list of names that I'm currently reviewing. With the help of my physical therapist, I have regained most of my range of motion. Dr. Gasho had initially asked if I wanted to go for physical therapy. I never thought it was an option, but is very important to do in order to have a better recovery. I still have pain if I over use my knee and it feels "achy" if the weather is cold and wet but otherwise the main issue that I had initially is gone. In regards to Bill S making a comment on my experience. I would like to say that everybody is an individual. No two people are alike when it comes to their bodies. Do a search of knee arthoscopy and recovery and you will find various stories of such. No two are exactly alike. Would you treat a 23 year old physically active person the same as a 40 something year old couch potato who both had knee surgery? To totally disregard a patients individual situation because a "text book " says otherwise is just plain wrong. What happened to a doctors medical ethics of respect for person or beneficence? Again, for me to defend my request to have an additional two weeks off after having knee surgery just two weeks prior in my opinion is not excessive. Nobody at my physical therapist office could believe I was denied that short period of time. I was having significant pain and swelling that was corroborated by my physical therapists as well. I was not trying to "get over" on anybody. It's not like I was out of work for months and didn't want to go back anytime soon. Thankfully when I had my ankle arthoscopy and ligament reconstruction two years ago by a different doctor in New York I was treated with compassion and as an individual. read more

This was the worst most unprofessional experience I've ever had with a doctor. This doctor did my grandmothers surgery during the Covid crisis. I had concerns about how to best handle the follow up visit so I called the office a few times and asked that he call back. He was immediately irritated when we got on the phone and proceeded to yell and berate me. When I asked him to stop yelling at me he said "no because you're being an idiot" and hung up on me. Used to go to Gasho with my family as our primary orthopedist though that has changed. I complained of ongoing back and hip pain years ago and he chalked it up to being that I am tall and maybe I walk funny ( I was 20 years old) I have since found out that I tore my labrum in my hip and only now after a real doctor took the time to examine me am I receiving help. This guy does not truly care he just wants to smile at you and take your money which he had no problem doing for this visit. Do yourself a favor and do not go to this Quack. read more

I got a recommendation for Dr. Gasho in July from my primary after consulting with my primary on the embarkation of an intense physical activity schedule (going from the occasional workout or run a few times a week to 5-6 days of 4-hour periods of activity). At the time I was starting to get "crunchy knees," a symptom that comes on sometimes when I stop exercising for a while, but not while I'm running. This was happening while I was running. I said was looking for a sports therapist to give me some pointers on what more I could do to reduce the sound, and my doc sent me to Dr. Gasho. I will first say that the front office staff of Dr. Gasho's office were VERY NICE - they were helpful and friendly, both on the phone and in person, before and after the appointment. I was ushered into a room relatively quickly (maybe a 10 minute wait) and asked to wait for the doctor. Then the foreboding began. First, Dr. Gasho came in 20 minutes later, personable and friendly like some other reviewers might say. He hadn't closed the door, and so having just introduced himself, a nurse who came in and then said 'sorry, wrong room' caused him to jump up, say 'I'll be right back' and disappear for 10 minutes. When he returned, he made no comment on the interruption or the delay. I explained the situation to him and my history and my primary doctor's thoughts and he observed the sound and my knee movements. I was about to explain my current activity level and the rigorous schedule I was about to embark on, and his cell phone rang. He commented that he didn't know who the number was, proceeded to answer it and talk with his wife for 5 minutes about plans for later in the evening. When he hung up, again, no apology or comment about taking a call in the middle of a session -- the fact that he didn't even have his ringer off, much less *not in the room* was a shock; I've never been to a doctor who made such an unprofessional gesture. But then the best part: after hanging up, he immediately went back to our conversation and told me that my condition just comes from "getting older, and there is nothing you can really do about it." He then said that living an inactive lifestyle will accelerate the condition, but that no kind of activity, stretches, supplement or exercise, could improve my knees from where they were at that point. WTF? I am 33, with a fairly regular though not strenuous exercise schedule, who has *had* this condition before and made it go away through increased activity and nutritional changes. And dude tells me it's because I'm aging and sedentary? I then insisted on his advice re: my knees on a major lifestyle change, trying to explain my current and future exercise plan, and he shut me down by saying we were done and he was late getting to the next patient. So, I was basically disrespected in all of these ways: 1. Doctor was late. 2. Doctor was not focused. 3. Doctor took a social phone call during a visit. 4. Doctor did not make any indication that any of the above actions were disrespectful of *my* time. 5. Doctor's diagnosis: Shit happens when you age. 6. Doctor's prescription: Nothing. It's hopeless. 7. Doctor's recommendations: None. He didn't have the time to assess the situation and provide his opinions. Bottom line: Dr. Gasho came across as a disrespectful, totally arrogant individual who walks his office like big man on campus, and does very little. Which could be overlooked IF HE HAD PROVIDED ANY KIND OF SERVICE you would expect from a doctor: a visit that involves listening to the patient, a diagnosis, and a professional recommendation or suggested treatment. I wish I could give his staff separate reviews, because they were great, but Dr. Gasho, I will never visit again and would never recommend him to a colleague. read more

Dr Gasho dismissed my account of continued pain following an accident as "not normal". I went to see another specialist who immediately identified the complication and advised on a course of action. I wander if Very different level of attention from Dr Ryan who used to lead the clinic. I don't pay for jokes and smiles but for medical care. read more

Dr. Gasho is friendly sure, but doesn't matter since he is so all over the place come recovery time. The problem I have is there is a big lack of communication. I had 2 knee surgeries and there was no clear post-op instructions given. No PT exercises given at all, I wasn't told what to work on after surgery (i.e. doing ankle pumps, working on getting extension). I was told all these things by a co-worker who also had ACL surgery and had to google all the information for post surgery care. Dr. Gasho told me some stuff but after I was already behind on them. For example, one week after surgery I came in for my follow up still using the crutches and not putting weight on my leg. At the appointment he told me I could be walking on my leg but I should have been given that information earlier so that I could have started putting weight on it. At the same appointment he told me I didn't have extension but didn't tell me I should have been working on that or how to work on that. 2nd week after surgery he asked me how PT was going even though the week before he told me to hold off on PT. Then he told me I was behind cause I wasn't in PT. He kept me in a restrictive brace for about a month and then would tell me I'm too stiff and need to get moving yet had also just told me to keep the brace on cause I wasnt ready to take it off. Very contradictory. I ended up being super stiff for PT, more than is normal. He made the recover unnecessarily frustrating, confusing and long. Really needs to brush up on his post op care and return the PT's calls. My PT called multiple times and never heard back. Go see Dr Douoghui or Dr. Ken Fine instead. read more

I feel extremely fortunate that Dr. Gasho was the surgeon on call when I broke my leg in three places. While waiting in the ER, I quickly checked with my internist, who texted back that Jim Gasho was one of the best. My injury was complicated, requiring bone grafting and several plates. Everything has healed perfectly. Dr. Gasho is an honest and effective communicator; he's been encouraging without sugar-coating the description of the recovery process. All along, he has been right there to answer questions, replying promptly to my emails, even answering panic calls late at night, and working closely with the PT team that is getting me back to walking. I'm now halfway through a six-month recovery and doing very well. One never hopes for further need of a surgeon, but if there's ever another event, I will definitely choose Dr. Gasho again. read more

Kind doctor with a very nice and professional staff. I was seen right away. I came into the office with a prognosis of tendencies. I have seen him twice in two months. He gave me two shots of cortisone and pain pills. I called three days ago to tell him my Rx has run out and I am still in horrible pain. He told his receptionist to tell me there is nothing more that he can do for me. Wow! So no physical therapy, or a referral to another doctor. I asked for him to call me back. Dr Gasho is one of the worst doctors I have ever encountered in over 35 years in DC. As others have written here, he is NOT trustworthy. He shovels patients in and out and spends as little time with each as he can, for maximum profit. I have had a serious back and nerve problem for months. He ordered an MRI. When I came to my appointment to hear the results, carrying my CD of the image, Gasho's office did not yet have the report. When Gasho came in, he said he didn't need the report and instead looked at the image. He told me it was normal and there was nothing wrong. Well, that wasn't true. I just had a real doctor look at the report and it clearly states my scan was NOT normal, and there is indeed pressure on my nerve from my spine. I'm now going to a neurologist with a stellar record, on the recommendation of my physician. I warn anyone who has more than a sprained ankle: do NOT see this guy. Do not send anyone in your family to this guy. Do not send your friends to this guy. Don't go near this guy at all. He has caused me untold pain and anguish. read more

I was referred to Dr. Gasho by Suburban Hospital after I broke my leg. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. First, I asked to have a copy of my X-rays when I left and they charged me $10.00 for a blank CD with no X-rays on it. When I called to complain I spoke with the extremely rude front desk lady and was told to bring the CD back, not so easy when you have a broken right leg and you need to get a ride. Then I called to ask for a refund and I was told that this never happens, so no. Finally, to round out this great experience, I was given the wrong walking boot (it was too short-for foot injuries not leg or ankle) and when I called to have it returned they said no. My advice: Steer clear of this practice! It's understandable that mistakes are made but not to own up to them and do the right thing afterwards is not a quality I want in a health care provider. read more

So, Dr. Gasho is pretty awesome. He is knowledgeable, honest, and straight to the point. He doesn't BS around. He also listens, which is a surprising trait for most doctors. He also will consider budget restraints you might have, if you inform him, regarding types of orthopedic devices. His staff is nice, but they could be more professional. He however is 100% professional (though its a very comfortable setting). If it is an emergency, you can pretty much get seen that day or the next. But his office is always full of people, every time I've gone he's mostly on top of the workload. This is to say, I don't remember ever getting POed in his waiting room (because i can't stand loooonng waits). If i ever have an orthopedic need, I am going back to Dr. Gasho. read more

My family kind of has Dr. Gasho on retainer. He fixed my husband's snapped (at the elbow) bicep tendon very nicely - he needed a very minumum or PT and regained complete range of motion. He's treated both my kids for shin splints, fractured ankle, and I've seen him for various ailments as well. My most recent experience was bicep tendonitis - the tendon subsequently snapped (NOT FUN) and over time, did not heal, and I developed rotator cuff symptoms. Dr. Gasho ultimately determined that the tendon had only partially torn and I had arthroscopic surgery to sever the tendon, fix the labrum, and decompress the rotator cuff. Tiny incisions, healing well, and I'm hopeful for full recovery in several months time. I trust Dr. Gasho completely. As others have said, he's a very cool guy, puts patients completely at ease, and tries to take time to get to know patients as individuals. While his front office staff could stand some streamlining and some greater efficiency and customer service training, they are not rude, and they do know their procedures. I only hope that Dr. Gasho doesn't retire before I'm done needing his services (both hopefully way in the future). read more

It's been several years since I've had a need to visit Dr. Gasho. I had a hip issue and was able to get in within a few days, was seen promptly, had x-rays within minutes, and was out of the office in less than 30 minutes. Various options were discussed with PT recommended and a suggested follow-up visit if that didn't resolve the issue. Highly recommend Dr. Gasho as a orthopedic doctor who doesn't rush to surgery and is able to resolve patient concerns. read more

I like his direct and plainspoken manner, and he clearly enjoys helping people. He's been very accessible on appointments and returns calls to his cell, which few docs do, of course. (I can see how, too, he would have declined to give another Yelp reviewer a form allowing an additional two weeks off after arthro knee surgery. Yes, your knee will be stiff, you'll be limping and you'll be in some pain, but it doesn't require three weeks to return to work.) read more

I would not recommend Dr. Gasho to anyone. He met with me for less than three minutes and mis-diagnosed a herniated disc as "simple sciatica." He prescribed me steroids that he said would completely solve the issue, which made me sick and set me back several weeks of potential rehabilitation. A month later I got a bill for over $300 which my insurance did not fully cover. I will not be going back. read more

I met Dr. G in a bit of a haze at Suburban Hospital after having a horse fall on me and break my pelvis. I LOVE him he is very upfront with what he thinks you should do and isn't Mr. You NEED surgery now lets work this first. I have since seen him several times over the years for knee and back issues and pelvic follow ups and he once came into the office at 7am on a Saturday just for me in a snow storm. Personally I could care less what he looked like or wore or if he answered 2000 phone calls during my appointment he is a fantastic Dr. And he really cares that you are seen promptly and it is great that he has a PT office right in his office so if you go in and need immediate help it is right there in office and you don't have to go anywhere. I also found him to be light on just prescribing meds that were not needed. I can't say enough good things about him! read more

I give super high marks to Dr Gasho and his staff. I recently injured my knee playing tennis; I had an MRI done elsewhere, and was told that I should have orthoscopic surgery done to repair the meniscus tear that they found. I went to Dr Gasho for a second opinion, and was very impressed with his expertise and no-nonsense approach to patient care. For my appointment, I brought in my MRI images and -- WITHOUT the benefit of the MRI written report -- Dr Gasho made a quick, expert assessment of what he saw in the images, and he explained to me the implications for my knee going forward. He did all of this in a patient and accessible manner, which I appreciated. His assessment of my prognosis under various treatment regimes (including the surgery option) was, on the whole, pragmatic and balanced -- again, something that I appreciated. Finally, it's also worth noting that Dr Gasho is supported by a wonderful staff -- they are very professional _and_ friendly (gosh, how _rare_ is that? -- sadly, all too rare... :-/ Am I alone in thinking that many folks in the health care profession need to rethink why they are in health care in the first place? -- it's the PEOPLE, stupid. :-) ). read more
