My wife took our 10 yr old son in for a eye appointment today. This will be the last time we go there for anything. She came home in tears because of how rude, condescending, and disrespectful he was to her. Our son's vision has gotten considerably worse since his last appointment. We weren't aware of how bad because he has never complained about his vision. Dr Rachford treated my wife like she was neglectful because of it. He then decided it was his place to critique our choice to homeschool our kids and tell our son that we were depriving of over $300,000 in scholarships by homeschooling him. Um, excuse me, but when did his expertise as an optometrist extend into our personal life? His comments belied a lack of knowledge of how homeschooling works, yet he still felt qualified to give his opinion on it. To make matters worse, as a 10 year old boy, our son already feels as though he doesn't have to listen to his mother; seeing Dr Rachford's disrespect does nothing but reinforce that viewpoint. He may be good at his job, but there are other optometrists out there who are just as good, without the attitude, disrespect, or condescension. He just lost out on 3 customers as my wife and I also both wear glasses. read more

I've read the reviews and tried to be optimistic as I went into the office for my appt. The doctor is a total D. First thing he did as he walked into my room was look at my four year old on the waiting chair and told him to "sit up straight" and "put the phone away" lol, my son wasn't even the patient and he didn't even bother to introduce himself. My son was well behaved during my visit and the doctor insisted on being an ass to my son. I will make the trip to Palm Springs for future needs. read more

I have been getting eye exams and glasses from Dr. James M. Rachford, OD since 1982. Before that he was my parents optometrist. Since 1982 I attempted to get a single pair of glasses from another office, when I was living in Sacramento. They were so bad that I wound up driving down to Yucca Valley to see Dr. Rachford for my new glasses. It was worth it. I had quite a serious issue with my eyes about 3 years ago - a possible retinal detachment. I saw Dr. Rachford, he explained what going on and advised me to see an ophthalmologist. I did so, visiting the Ophthalmology Department at Loma Linda University Medical Center. The ophthalmologist at Loma Linda used EXACTLY the same words to describe the condition, the threat it presented to my vision, and advice about what to do if the problem occurred again that Dr. Rachford used. I have the utmost confidence in Dr. Rachford and would recommend him to anyone. i just don't know where I am going to get a pair of glasses when he retires! read more

One star is one too many. I saw Dr. Mcfarland a few months ago in DHS. I could NOT believe a Doctor could be so condescending and downright rude. Recently I developed changes to my eyesight and tried to get an emergency eye appointment. Dr. Rachford's receptionist gave me an appointment for 8 days from then. When I was seated in the chair to my dismay Dr. McFarland enters the room. Needless to say I was disappointed but thought maybe he just had a bad day when I saw him previously. No such luck. He is EXTREMELY condescending, opinionated, and an all around smart ass. I almost left in tears. He has no chair side manor and instead spews sarcasm. Quite frankly, I'm ashamed for him and in the manor in which he feels he can speak to patients. FYI, he also works at COSTCO vision center. read more

These folks were so helpful to me, a traveler in the area, going backpacking for a week in Joshua Tree. I loved them all! The story: Every few months, I have to have one eyelash pulled by an optometrist, because it grows into my eye instead of out, the way it's supposed to. It's very painful, because it's putting micro holes in my cornea until it's taken out. Only an optometrist or ophthalmologist can do it. It's not that predictable; I have to wait until it begins to hurt, then deal with it. It started to hurt as I was driving to Joshua Tree from So. Cal. I could not go into the back country with this problem. En route, I stopped at the Foothill Optometry Center in Rancho Cucamonga, near an REI store where I'd stopped for last minute backpacking gear. A staff person at REI referred me. I explained my situation at Foothill, said that I was a traveler, asked if they could possibly accommodate me. While they did offer to see me much later that day than I could stay, they also said they would charge $100, and treated me like I was a really sketchy and skeevy character for walking in off the street with a request for help, instead of the upright citizen and retired-paraprofessional traveler and backpacker that I am. For that reason, I do not give them a top marks. They get two: one for being willing to see me later than I could stick around, and one for speaking to me, however reluctantly. By contrast, given the same information, everyone at the Eye Clinic in 29 Palms was very, very friendly, helpful, and full of helpful tips about things to do/see in 29 Palms, from the billing staff to the glasses tech (especially funny and helpful), to Dr. Rachford, who was professional, thorough, and quick. And they only charged me $25! The contrast was striking. Five stars for Eye Clinic in 29 Palms, for sure. I even called their office after the backpacking trip to ask them for another referral, they were that helpful. Highly recommended. 29 Palms has all these lovely murals, and the outside of their office building has one. Bonus! Lots of parking. read more

I can see why this place is rated so low. The service is horrible the people in here act like you've offended them by walking in without an appointment. We walked in to get a quote on some glasses for my wife and right when we walked In instead of getting a Welcome we get a "do you have an appointment what are you here for". Then I took a call from my VA cause I'm a disabled veteran and they had called to schedule an appointment. And the lady at the front finally talk to me and said sir then pointed to a sign that said no cellphones. God forbid that me answering a call would cause someone to go blind. Really it an optometrist. So I just told my wife to go somewhere else that didn't seem so high maintenance and that actually wanted our business. read more

Dr. Rachford and his office manager are extremely disrespectful and have no passion or care for patients. They made me leave I tears from their office, and I'm a tough girl. Please, look for someone else that accepts medi-cal or to do your contacts lens exam. I will post my experience later. read more

I went to go get my eyes checked because something was interfering with the vision in my right eye.. Dr. Rachford told me they were pigment strings and not to worry... my eyes were just getting old. What he should have done was refer me to an ophthalmologist to make an appointment ASAP. Because the problem was not addressed immediately, I ended up with a detached retina, losing sight in my right eye and had to have surgery. When he told me my eyes were just getting old and that was why I was seeing strings swirling around my eye - I lost confidence in him right then and there. He didn't do a thorough testing of my eyes, yet I was charge for a full visit. Another thing that took me-aback was that I overheard Dr. Rachford refer to me as "that colored girl" when he was speaking to one of his office staff. I didn't get mad or offended...I just assumed he didn't know better. I'm 59 years old and have not been a girl in a very long time. The optician was wonderful with helping me pick out a pair of new frames for my glasses - the receptionist was kind, she filled out my paperwork for me because I couldn't see to do it myself. read more

I'm sure Dr. Rachford is good enough as far as optometrists go, but I've had the worst experiences with the office manager. She has the worst attitude and gives terrible customer service. The receptionist is sweet. Sure, they take Medi-Cal insurance, but if your kids' vision hasn't changed enough and its less then 2 years (which is Medi-Cal's policy), you get stuck with getting ripped off at $160 for a 5 minute eye exam. Their price is ridiculous. Its almost double of what Dr. Lohman would charge. And, they don't even give you a cash discount. I'll never go back again. I'd rather pay cash out of pocket to Dr. Lohman who is awesome and gives a discount for paying cash. When choosing glasses, the office manager has the worst customer service personality. The dr told me my daughter had 20/20 vision then a week later I went back bc my daughter couldn't see the board at school another dr said she needed glasses, this was 2 yrs ago last week they were trying to do the same thing . The optometrist on Adobe....rude he was so nice when I first went in to make an appointment then today's my appointment he called 11 min ago saying it's Friday...I wouldn't have hade an appointment fri wed is my only day off even the card he wrote out said today at 4:30 but he proceeded to give me attitude and tell me I was wrong and then tells me "idk what you want me to do I'm not taking you today I guess I can do sat" I work sat then he tells me "idk what to tell you" lol so now that I'm frustrated and still blind lol I guess I'll have to find somewhere else with better customer service. read more

I'm always in and out. The ladies are helpful and Dr Rachford cracks me up but he is honest and tells you like it is. Not gonna lie I'm happy I have insurance because glasses and contacts cost a fortune. Doesn't matter if you go to a chain store like Costco or get them at your local eye doctor. read more

I give 5 stars to Doctor James M Rachford for exceptional optometry. He has given me eye care that I haven't received from any other optometry clinic in my 20 years of needing correctional lenses. He is a wonderful Optometrist and has all the advice and tips you need for eye and lens care. I would like to make a note about Tricare Standard Insurance coverage for those who are Active Duty Military Family Members. According to this office, Tricare Standard ONLY covers eye exams associated with glasses, not for contact lenses or fittings. If you go in for a yearly eye exam and you get fitted for contacts, it will NOT be covered! You will have to pay for the 120 dollar eye exam. Just a heads up that I wished I would have known. read more

I've been wearing glasses for 11 years now and no doctor had ever found that I have one eye lower than the other and therefore need a prism in my glasses. Dr. Rachford tested for this right away and with my new prescription I see better than ever. No more headaches all the time! I was so happy with the service here I had my mom come from Perris (1.5 hr away) to get checked out by Dr. Rachford and lo and behold she has the same problem, I had to get it from somewhere since it's genetic. Great staff and awesome doctor! I also got my glasses from here and they have a very good selection. read more

This office treats Medi-Cal patients like substandard people by ONLY allowing certain days for appointments (Monday and Tuesday only). Then only making appointments on Wednesday for next week and none past that point. Yet if I had standard insurance I could make and get an appointment at any time. Boycott this doctor! read more

They're nice and friendly and ready to schedule whenever I'm available until i tell them my son's insurance, they say they accept it but don't have any appts available. I've been trying for months. It's call back in a week or a month or a specific date When I told her today I keep calling back she was rude and sarcastic and just kept saying ok. I'm not one that complains often or writes negative reviews but this was horrendous!!! If I could give zero stars, I would. The absolute WORST customer service EVER!!! My son-in-law had made an appointment to get his vision checked. Long story short, my daughter was admitted to the hospital for emergency surgery a couples before hand which left him on his own to take care of their 3 month baby. Now, I'm sure if you have tried to use this doctor, you know, that appointments are not easy to make, so he didn't want to cancel. So...because he was on his own with their baby, he had to choice but to take him. The baby began to fuss a bit while in the waiting room and the Doctor was overheard making the remark that, "This is NOT a Pediatrician's Office". The administrative staff was equally rude so my son-in-law, completely embarrassed, took his son and left. This is NOT how you treat people!! This office should be completely ashamed of themselves!!! read more
