We are camping with friends at Alpen Rose RV park a few miles from James Ranch. A local suggested we check out James so eight of us went for an early dinner. This is a genuine Colorado experience. An amazing 400 acre ranch with grazing cattle. A beautiful store with incredible meats. The restaurant is order and pick up at the counter and select an indoor or outdoor table. Great burger, great atmosphere on a 75 degree summer day. I loved the fingerling fried potatoes, had this rich flavor to them and a homemade ketchup that was delicious. Almost like when you could buy dark russet chips back in the day, I just loved them. Burger was very good as was the steak sandwich. The only thing I can say that is negative is that the food is overpriced a little. You're paying for the tremendous view and atmosphere, and the food quality is very good but a burger ala carte is like 17.00 and comes with no sides. read more

The cows at this ranch in the Animas Valley are hormone and antibiotic free! They process the cows at 18-30 months of age to maximize marbling, tenderness and flavor. This beef is dry aged for 21 days and then cut and wrapped. We have bought grass fed, organic beef here three times. The first two times were one pound packages of ground beef. These were nothing like store bought beef, they formed super juicy burgers with a wonderful beefy taste. This last time we stopped in like a Boy Scout. We brought a cooler from home and were prepared to buy in bulk. We settled on the sizzling deal package for $86.70. This package comes with 2 pounds of ground beef patties, .99 pound of beef flank steak, 2.12 pounds of top sirloin cap, 1.31 pounds of petite rib roast, and 1.22 pounds of boneless top sirloin steak. This works out to $11.34 a pound, BUT you have to remember you are paying for quality. There is nothing like this hormone and antibiotic free grass fed, organic meat. This meat is healthier than grain fed beef and is higher in CLAs and Omega 3s. They also offer a savory package for $81.60 which includes chuck roast, diamond cut rump roast, short ribs, stew meat and soup bones. The total poundage of these cuts is more than the sizzling package so the price per pound would be less (but you are also paying for about 3 pounds of soup bones). Next time you are in Durango, give this place a try, just remember they are not open on Monday-Wednesday during the winter. read more

A friend introduced us to James Ranch Market located in Durango. We were on a road trip to Colorado for my birthday and we made a pit stop to Durango for lunch. It was pouring rain but that didn't stop us from tasting the best burger ever. I'm not a burger fan but this burger was delicious. I ordered the blue cheese bacon burger and OMG, was it good. It doesn't come with fries, so make sure to order one to go with your burger. They have outdoor seating but since it was raining we opt to seat inside. It was cozy and spacious. Once you order, they'll give you a number and deliver the food to where you're seating. It's a busy place so have patience when waiting for your order. They also have a market with lots of cute items, produce, meats and cheeses. If you're near Durango, give it a try and you won't regret it. read more

Love this stop because it has *honey caramels.* Get as many bags as you can eat before the expiration date!! They actually come from steamboat, and are made with only honey, not sugar, simply perfect. They have some other things like hand lotions and soaps but I mostly find things overpriced, especially some of the things that you can find at a regular grocery. If I could give this place 10 STARS I would. Our friends recommended this place and we went back 2 times and we went for their lunch and it was amazing! Their burger was so delicious and their fries were nothing like I've ever had before they were so crunchy and full of flavor. I had to get their kombucha again and it was a perfect combo. It was a really great place to bring my dog. There are tons of tables to choose from out in the open, under the patio/deck, or under a cute apricot tree. Everytime I am in Durango I make it a point to eat at James Ranch Grill, the meats and produce are grown on the ranch and everything else is locally sourced. The burgers are the absolute best in town, but every salad I saw go by looks pretty impressive as well. They started out in a little walk up food cart on the property and have expanded to a beautiful grill and market (where you can purchase all they produce). The dining options are walk up ordering or take out and you can dine in or under a porch or tree or in the sun, they have wonderful options all family friendly in a casual Outdoor atmosphere with terrific views. Best meal on the road in two weeks. We had their green chili burgers (I had my roll without the butter) and done well. The burger was outstanding - perfectly cooked with a very nice flavor. The avos on top were perfect. The fries on the side were also delish with a side of house made ranch; we also didn't walk away feeling gross from too much unhealthy food! It was easy to order at the counter (the woman taking the counter verified our order); we also tried local drinks (Ska Brewing and a hard cider). I was there Friday morning. I guess they open starting their week on Thursday. Went there for chili, pot pies and whatever else piqued my interest. Someone came in on Thursday and bought all the pot pies. No chili available. I did stumble across some bulk breakfast sausage. Bought a pound to try. It was excellent. Although it is processed offsite; I ended going back and buying three more pounds to take home- we are RVing for a long weekend. This is the kind of hometown, grass-fed, organic ranch and farm that everyone wishes they had in their backyard. There are so many AMAZING aspects about this place that I will just have to make a list: 1. Organic grass-fed beef from their very happy cows. They have every cut imaginable and it is all incredibly delicious. Yes, grass-fed beef is a little bit of a different flavor than corn-fed. And no, it isn't as fatty and marbled as corn-fed, so it may seem "tough" to some. But it is sooooo much better to eat grass-fed, both for your own health and for the environment. And it tastes delicious! All right, stepping down off my soap box. 2. They make their own cheeses. From organic, grass-fed milk from their dairy cows. And it, like everything else on this ranch, is good. I especially love their creamy Belford. And luckily, I have signed up to receive emails from James Ranch, because a few weeks ago I found myself and a bottle of Chateau St. Jean at an impromptu cheese tasting that they hosted, nibbling their pseudo-brie (made from raw milk) with peaches and baguette, enjoying watching the thunderheads move in over the valley. The Ranch also has a raw-milk "sharing" program (selling raw milk is illegal in Colorado) where you pay for a share of a cow and a boarding fee and get a gallon of raw milk a week for most of the warmer months from "your" cow. 3. Their pigs are fed off the whey from the cheese-making process and their pork has a light and milky flavor. Just like their grass-fed beef, it has a flavor that most aren't used to, but it's the best bacon around! 4. The Ranch store. It's the same selection of meat, cheese, and produce they bring to the farmer's market, but it also has the added bonuses of very friendly goats, eggs, and the ability to use your credit card. If you drive up 550 towards Silverton, you'll see their sign just past Honeyville. They're open weekdays 11-6 in the summer and Saturdays 11-4:30 in the winter. 5. The people. Everybody involved in James Ranch is extremely friendly and incredibly passionate about what they do and why they're organic. It is a bit overwhelming how lucky I feel to have them in Durango as a supplier of my food. I can only hope I do it justice when it comes into my kitchen :) What I really mean to say is I LOVE JAMES RANCH! It is an awesome place with some incredible food, and even if you don't live in Durango you need to check it out! But maybe not, because then you might be jealous ;) read more

Best. Burgers. Ever. We grabbed a picnic table and enjoyed the quaint, peaceful setting as cows and chickens roamed freely in the nearby pastures. Super-friendly, informative staff run this family-owned roadside business set in the Durango hills. Four siblings share the workload: one takes care of the organic garden (and provides tours of the ranch), one makes cheese, another runs the onsite store, and finally, one of the sisters and her husband do the cooking. Condiments are organic and sparse, as these burgers require little adornment. Why? The cows are grass-fed. Does this make a difference? It does. Be sure to order the yummy purple potato chips, too, which are made on the premises. If you want to experience the Farm-to-Table Movement, eat here; I highly recommend it. And a little aside: The fifth and youngest sibling - a brother - is the co-owner of Serious Texas BBQ (two locations), in downtown Durango. Fyi: Serious Texas BBQ doesn't serve James Ranch organic beef because of the large quantity of beef they use daily. read more

Such a nice restaurant! The employees are very nice, and most of the food is produced in the very ranch! It's hard to choose a table to eat at, but that's because every table is perfectly placed, so you have a shady spot under a tree, and a great view of the valley. Despite the small menu, the food is still very good. I had the Signature Burger, and it was delicious! Besides the restaurant, there's also a farmers market and a small petting zoo, where you can interact with Nubian Goats. It's a beautiful area I would definitely go there again and again! read more

Amazing little spot with amazing views and great bites. There is a little market inside selling grass "finished" beef, fresh eggs and greens. Sweet little goats greet you and it's staff is pretty advanced with taking orders electronically. The only reason I didn't give five stars as they don't seem to adapt to any off menu requests, as my friend wanted to buy a gluten free roll and they said they font sell it separately. Other than that we had spinach salads, burgers, garden salads and signature burger on a bed if greens. All was top notch and we will be back. read more

If I lived in Durango, I would be tempted to eat here daily! First of all, I think I had the BEST burger I've ever eaten! Everything about it was delicious! My husband said the same thing about his burger and both of our kids loved the pulled pork sandwich. The ice cream was also fantastic! Aside from the food, the atmosphere was unlike anything we get to experience living in Phoenix. There was fantastic live music playing while we were there, I loved getting to sit outside to view the fantastic scenery and a huge plus for a family traveling with a dog... our dog got to play around in the grass (not something a dog from Phoenix gets to do often). I've driven by this place on multiple occasions, but have never stopped in to eat. I was thoroughly impressed. The owners and staff make you feel very much at home, and the views are pretty spectacular. I ordered the steak sandwich with purple potato salad; it was excellent.
