I purchased a service agreement with James River this spring. I am writing this review after their second service call, last month. James River send a technician to our home for our fall service call. We have a natural gas furnace with forced air. I believe they used scare tactics to try and trick my family into purchasing a new furnace, even as ours is operating normally. During the service call, we were told to keep our furnace off, and were asked to sign a form acknowledging that it had been "red-tagged," meaning that James River doesn't consider it safe to operate. We were told that the issue was a cracked heat exchanger. This would mean that exhaust from the burning gas could escape into the house air, presenting carbon monoxide risk to us in the house. Following this, we were given a quote for a new furnace, assuming that this one was no longer safe to operate. In the five days following this service call, we replaced our carbon monoxide detectors and have had no alarms. We also had TWO OTHER HVAC COMPANIES come to our home. Each of them first inspected the furnace and had no major feedback - then, when asked to specifically look at the heat exchanger, both these companies did not find any cracks in the heat exchanger. At my request, James River returned to our home. They sent the same technician. I asked him to show me the issue that caused him to red-tag my furnace. As he was opening the furnace up, he made these comments: - "I can't say I've never been wrong about anything" - "I'd always rather be better safe than sorry - can't imagine if it was my family" - "They just make us red-tag them for liability reasons" These all sounded like backpedalling to me from a technician who saw "severe cracks" a week ago. After he opened my furnace, I personally took a flashlight and visibly inspected the tubes. I took photos from multiple angles. I ran my hands along the tubes. I am not an HVAC tech - but I neither felt nor saw any cracks in these steel tubes that make up the heat exchanger. At no point did this technician tell me, specifically, which tube had the crack or where along a tube a crack might be located. At no point did he offer to perform any other kind of inspection. At no point did he offer to remove the heat exchanger to show me the problem. When I showed this technician one of the photos I took on my cellphone, I pointed to a random spot on a tube in the photo. "Right here?" I prompted; he responded, "That's one of the worse ones." This is a tube that I saw and touched for myself and did not have any cracks in it. All of these things make me conclude that James River AC used scare tactics to try to trick me into purchasing a new furnace from them even as mine is operating normally. They tried to take advantage of me, and I truly believe they outright lied to me. They have lost me as a customer and I discourage others from taking the risk of giving them your business. read more

James River HVAC installed two new exterior heat pumps on my house in the Museum District. There was a unit on the roof that they expertly removed and even repaired some holes left from the old unit. They also replaced the second unit which was in the courtyard with a new heat pump. I also asked them to provide me with an analysis on how to keep our newly renovated media room cool being as how it was already in the basement and a lot of HVAC wouldn't be required. We settled on enlarging an existing vent and they ran two new vents to make sure the humidity was kept in check and that it would properly heat the space come wintertime. Lastly, they installed new programmable thermostats. All work was done neatly, quickly and the crew was very professional and respectful of our home and lifestyle. I would recommend them to anyone looking for HVAC work. read more

Avoid this company. The heat pump at my rental went out during the heat wave of July 2018. They sent a poor technician who, after two hours, couldn't figure out the issue and literally invented problems (he allegedly couldn't find a non-existent short in the power connection and some other nonsense). He recommended a replacement. The next day, their salesperson came and tried to convince me to buy a new system for an exorbitant price (~$10,000 for a 1100 sqft rowhouse). No sir. I got a second opinion from another company. Their salesperson looked at the system and told me it could probably be fixed. The next day, their technician fixed it in 15 minutes (the unit was stuck in heat mode because of a bad thermostat, installed by the tech from this company). I hate to think that James River tried to pull one over on me, but it sure looks like it. read more

called to get an estimate on extending my gas line under the house 10' to an existing fireplace. The man answered "james river" no hello, no name given, not even a "how can i help you". I told the man what I needed done. He said $500.00 to $600.00 to run the line. I called another Co. and got it done for less than $200.00. James River has forgotten the area that made them grow. I would not have paid $600.00 in New York City. Don't walk, run the other way from this overpriced Co. read more

I called James River Air on Friday to schedule a service for my AC. I was told they would come out later that day and if not they would definitely be out Saturday Morning. When they hadn't arrived Saturday I called again and was told by the same person oh it usually takes 3 days so if they aren't there tomorrow definitely they will be there on Monday. I reminded her of the call on Friday and how she said definitely about the technician coming out but didn't show . She also thinks Monday would be three days. She was answering the phone from home cause I heard kids in the background so the company is pretty sketchy. They will just keep you waiting forever. I told her (someone who just answering the phone and doesn't really care) that I was upset . I am having family in on Sunday and the AC isn't working. I need them to come out asap. They advertise emergency services but that seems like BS since anything that takes 3 days is not an emergency. Just lost me as a customer! Mad as he'll. read more

I called James River because there was no cool air coming out of the A/C. So they sent someone out who pretty much said we needed to clean the coils with cold water and change the air filter. I did that, which cost me $129.00. Ok so be it. However, that did not solve the problem. They had another person come out who diagnosed the problem as a reversing valve. Problem 1. They ordered the reversing valve on a Friday and claimed they would call us when it was there. I called the following Thursday and low and behold after raising a little cain, it was there. They dropped off the part and the next day (Friday) a man came out and fixed it. He said it would be 24/48 hours before the cool air would settle back into the home. By that Sunday, it was 86 degrees in the home and the problem still was not solved. When they say 24 hour service, that is a flat out lie. 24 hours means it doesn't matter what time it is, someone needs to come out and fix the problem immediately. Not wait until the next morning. Now I am out $1,653.00. I called and they brought another tech out who said the problem was the compressor and this can be misdiagnosed between the two parts. Then, they brought a sales lady to come out and provide an estimate which is close to $9,000.00. So let's be very clear. They couldn't solve the problem and started jamming me up for more money by stating I needed a whole new unit. Which the way they ran this was a total scam. I called two other A/C companies, one which fixed the problem in its entirety and both of which provided estimates for well under the price that James River wanted. I would rather give them 1/2 a star, only because the techs to their credit were courteous. read more

I called for an estimate to replace a 20 year old compressor/air handler in our house. However, on reading the proposal form, I will not ever consider using this company. For anything. Everyone seeking a bid from this company should read carefully the fine print on the back side of the proposal. First, every term of this agreement seeks to limit the obligations of the company to a ridiculous degree, disclaiming entirely any warranty whatsoever. Apparently the only way to get any warranty at all from them is to sign up for a service contract. They disclaim liability for any water damage (paragraph 11), so if they improperly install the condensate drain lines and they leak into your house, you're out of luck. However, and most importantly, paragraph 12 of the proposal states that I, as the customer, will defend and pay any claim which is brought against them by a third party as a result of their installation. In other words, if a family member or a visitor to my house is harmed in any way by the equipment that they sell to me and install, then I have to defend James River, and pay off that claim. I, the customer, who paid them to furnish and install this equipment, am liable for the work that they did and the equipment they sold to me!!! Here's the clause, verbatim: "12. Third Party Indemnification. Customer agrees to and shall indemnify, defend and hold harmless Company, its employees and agents for and against all claims brought by parties other than the parties to this Agreement. This provision shall apply to all claims regardless of cause, including Company's performance or failure to perform and including defects in products, design, initial connection, inspections, tests, repair service, or non-operation of the Equipment, whether based upon active or passive negligence, indemnification, contributions, warranty, or strict or product liability on the part of Company, its employees or agents, but this provision shall not apply to claims or loss or damage solely and directly caused by an employee of the company while on or about Customer's premises." We have used James River for many years. Our most recent experience was yesterday. We have had a maintenance agreement with them for years which has more than paid off. Yesterday ( a holiday weekend) our air conditioning stopped working. A tech was out within 2 hours. As with all of the technicians, Judy was professional and fast. Because we have a maintenance agreement, and the part needed was under warranty, it cost us nothing. We have had nothing but great experiences with James River Air. I highly recommend them. read more

Our hot water heater stopped functioning over the weekend. Using their coupon, I received a house call for $49, which was reasonable/good for a Sunday, compared to their competitors. But then they charged me $190 for one hour of diagnostic in which they didn't fix the problem (because they didn't have the parts). So, $240 for a diagnostic, and nothing was fixed. What a rip off! I called the manufacturer the next day and they were able to walk me through the steps of what was wrong (for free). I then received a call the next day with an estimate of $573 for labor (parts were free--covered by warranty) to install the two new parts ($573 at $191/hr). Total would have been $810 to fix a water heater (I've had new ones installed for less). I was already a little sore from the previous bill, so I decided to move forward with a more reasonably priced alternative (Carroll). I've been suckered into calling James River a few times over the past 10 years, but no matter what deal they present, they always turn out to be the most expensive option (except perhaps when compared to Michael and Sons). Do not call them for repair work, unless you have money to burn! read more

Big kudos to Jason Marsh in sales who coordinated the whole mess and arranged for parts and everything. When we get ready to replace he's the man. #1 on my list. read more

Called James River on a Friday afternoon when the unit I had purchased from them (5 months ago) suddenly stopped working. They could not tell me a day that someone would be out but that I would be put on the list and be contacted. I was contacted the next day and the technician identified the problem and had the part to repair it. After replacing a transformer, a board on the unit and my thermostat fried. James River Air did not have this part in stock and I was told I would be contacted on Monday morning with an update. I was not contacted and had to call them, several times, to try to speak with someone who could tell me if parts were available. I was contacted finally to get the news the part was not available and was backordered indefinitely. I asked to speak with someone who could make a decision to resolve this with me and have not heard back. I've been a James River customer for well over a decade and did not expect this from a company I have trusted in the past. read more

Charged $98 just to show up at the door. Charged $165 to tell me that my thermostat is indeed broken, which I had already mentioned and already knew for sure. Offered me new thermostats for upwards of $320. Also demanded payment immediately on the spot, would not wait even a couple hours for me to contact my landlord to pay, so I had to out of pocket. Look for service from another company who is there to help you not to charge you an arm and a leg for nothing. read more

Way over priced! $300 - $400 for a capacitor before installation when they run from $5 - $100 depending on your model (not from Google, but three other quotes received for the work). I get markups but that is criminal, and taking advantage of people in need and a tight spot. Shame on you James River Air! read more

Stan and Jake just finished replacing our AC system - coil, outdoor unit, and some duct work. They worked hard, took care to respect and protect our home and things, and did excellent work. Their workmanship was the best I've seen. Everyone we met from JRA since our AC froze up three weeks ago went to great lengths to explain our options and help us get our system going again with the things we needed but nothing more. Give them a call. You won't regret it. read more

$98 to tell me "yes, that leak you called about is a leak after all", and an estimate over $1000 for at most an hour of labor, if they did all of the unnecessary work they listed on the estimate. The technician was here within an hour of calling. That was the only positive of the experience. Fortunately, I was not at home or I would have lost it at what happened later. The expansion tank on my furnace had literally keeled over and started leaking at the joint for the vertical bend. This was caused after being bent 4 years prior by a repair tech for another company leaning on it while doing work. All I wanted was for them to drain the furnace and re-sweat the copper bend for the expansion tank back upright. My wife was home and called me AFTER the tech had left without doing any work. First he said that he was only there to investigate the issue, and recommend service. Then we would need to schedule an follow-up appointment for the actual work. This "recommendation", for what took all of 30 seconds, costs $98. For the actual work to be done, they would charge well over $1000. Just to drain/refill/purge the furnace was going to be $769. This takes about 30 seconds of actual work and 15 minutes waiting for it to drain and in reverse to fill, with about 10 min. of purging the radiators. To drain the furnace, you need to turn off the thermostat, cut off the water to the furnace, attach a hose to the drain, and open the drain. Four steps all for the low price of $769. The repair to the pipe, which once the water is drained from the furnace, takes about 30 seconds, and involves cleaning the fittings, adding flux, and sweating the pipe. That wasn't listed because he said, despite the fact that this was caused by being bent and has been perfectly fine for the previous 20 years, you really should swap all this copper out for black steel. That was going to cost $333. Then, the kicker is he recommended also adding a shut off valve to the supply feed. To cut and sweat a shut off valve is $234, and he wrote "for each". Now, keep in mind that our furnace already has a supply shut off valve, how many was he going to charge me for? The furnace only has ONE supply feed. I am sorry to say, but I was duped out of $98 to feed their extensive advertising budget. For the repairs, I think I will just take 30 min. out of weekend to fix it myself. read more

Steer clear of this company. They sold me a new HVAC system with a "No Hassle parts and Labor" ten year warranty. The coil developed a leak and they said because I discontinued annual service with them that voided the warranty!! I'm going back to review any fine print, but this was definitely not made clear at any time during the sales or service process. read more

I cannot say enough about our recent service experience with James River Air Conditioning. Starting at 10:30pm on Saturday night during Memorial Day weekend, Arlo Colley took a panicked call from a family friend (me) about our struggling single-zone unit. He gave me the unfortunate (and detailed) news after a completely volunteer phone diagnostic session that we were probably looking at a complicated fix, due to the age and setup of our system (in a house we had just purchased 6 months earlier). Not wanting to make me wait until the holiday weekend was over, he called Dennis, who agreed to assess our system and talk about options the very next day, Sunday, in the morning. Less than 12 short hours from the call we were currently having. Dennis arrived as scheduled on Memorial Day weekend Sunday, at 10:30am, and spent more than two hours with us explaining everything about our aging (and failing) system, and helping us understand what it would mean to bring our house up to speed and keep it comfortable for years to come. During that time, Arlo, on his day off, checked on us to do a quick tune up of our system to get us through to our install period, which was scheduled for the following week. (He did such a fantastic job that we had many conversations in the coming week about just keeping up with little tweaks like the one he had done - because it made a world of difference!) Because we were upgrading the entire system to a dual-zone with nearly twice the power (going from a 3-ton single zone to a 5-ton dual zone), the team understandably needed lots of time to prepare, and we were scheduled for the following Monday to start the full system renovation. We received a courtesy call on Saturday prior to our install to confirm everything about Monday, and the team was prompt and ready Monday morning at our house. Jeremy Gray and Stan Surowicz were the two (wonderful) installers assigned to our project, and we found out at the end that it was the first time they had attempted a dual-zone install in the span of one week. (Spoiler alert - the install was perfect, professional, and we never missed one minute of air conditioning!) Throughout the install process they kept every workspace clean, covered all of our floor surfaces, wore booties over their shoes indoors, and vacuumed every area the work affected every day they were there before leaving. We threw them plenty of curve balls, including one member of our household falling ill with bronchitis and trying to sleep below their work zone in our attic for two days (and finding success!), and during the process they were always courteous, professional, friendly, and generally enjoyable to have as houseguests during the day for the week. In short, the team that attended to us turned what could have been a horrible situation into something that was a mere annoyance, and helped us navigate a complete renovation of our entire HVAC system with little to no interruption of our normal routine. The most important part is that our two children, ages two and four, never missed a beat or once had to tell us they couldn't sleep because they were hot. This particular team at James River Air Conditioning should be recognized for creating customers for life, and we will do our best to make sure that anyone who will listen hears our great experience. We had a pretty complicated job for a water heater replacement, involving a bunch of extra piping, joints, and a pump because it is also our house heating system. Seth knew it was going to be a very involved job, but even though it stretched into a Friday night, he didn't rush the job. Instead, he did it all the right way, with great workmanship and thoughtfulness about how to arrange the system. Because he did it right, there were no leaks or drips when he brought the system back online, so there was no need for re-work. he even answered my daughter's questions about how the system works and did a great cleanup. If you read one review, please read mine. Learn from my mistakes. James River Heating and Air WILL price gouge you. I was hot. I was tired. I should have done my research. That's on me. I needed my 12 year old AC unit replaced in a rush because it completely gave out on me. James River came out, and said the repair would be more than 1k for a fan motor and that I should think about replacing the whole unit. A "supervisor" who was actually just a glorified salesman came out and sold me a unit for 10k, which is roughly 2x the price an AC unit should be for my house (4k-6.5k). I just wanted it over and done with, and for my house to be bearable again, so I signed the paperwork and it was installed the next day. Yes, they were friendly and accommodating. But I would rather be treated like dirt by a company than to be price gouged and worry how I'm going to eat for the next few years. Go with a smaller company. Don't go with James River. Do your research before agreeing to terms. read more

Our 2nd floor heat wasn't working properly so we called James River to diagnose the problem. They installed the outdoor unit 4 years ago, so we hoped they could solve the issue. The technician talked about coils heating up too high and something blown, ultimately diagnosing that we needed a new motor on the inside air handler. With great concern, he stated if we are going to do that, we might as well replace the whole handler. We paid the technician $275 for his service call and the sales manager and quoted us $4,000 to replace the unit. Thank goodness for helpful neighbors who texted me to tell me JR has a reputation for wanting to install units. His recommended service technician came by and figured out it was just an issue with our thermostat. A very simple fix!! We told him was the JR tech told us and he didn't see anything in line with the bogus diagnosis. My recommendation: GO ANYWHERE ELSE. They are not trustworthy. read more

I just bought a home that was built in 1966 and does not have hvac. First order of business was to get some AC before that Virginia summer hit, so I called James River and set it up to have them come out and give me a quote. A guy came out and took a look and clearly wanted nothing to do with this project. After some huffing and puffing about it he said it would cost in the $30k range to do the whole house - I was willing to spend $15-20k so he suggested getting just the upstairs done and using splits on the downstairs. I was not impressed with his attitude at all about the job and felt like I was inconveniencing him with such a request but I asked him to email me the quote. Never heard from him again. Not. A. Word. Apparently my $20k was beneath him. I had two other companies come out and quote - both said they could do the whole house for less than $20k. I ended up going with Chase, inc. They did not so much as bat an eyelash at what the job would entail and they did an amazing job! The unit runs amazing, looks great, the work was impeccable and the guys were awesome. Oh, and did I mention they did it for less than $15k? I highly recommend if you need HVAC done that you call Chase - I repeat, CALL CHASE. Whatever you do - do not call James River, I mean, unless you have like $50k to spend and then maybe they'll care to entertain you. read more

They have installed a new hot water heater and a furnace in our home as well as biannual maintenance. Not only do they provide wonderful work, you will not find better customer service. I was extremely upset that I called for service to be preformed (air conditioning died) and it took approximately five days for a technician to make it to my residence. I was told that they had to handle service contracts first (which I understand), but do you not have enough technicians on staff to handle service calls? All of my calls were answered with, you're on our waiting list and we can't give you a timeframe. That is ridiculous. I was completely impressed with the technician that came to my house, he was courteous and professional. read more

Unfortunately I did not have any filters available but was able to place an order from the company,no one has ever asked to change my filters I perch on the ladder myself! I called them because our gas furnace wouldn't turn on for the first cold nights of Fall. The tech came out and took a look and said the induction motor needed to be replaced and it would cost $1,500. He could get it down to $1,300 if I picked up the maintenance plan. I asked how much the motor was and was told it cost $989. I went on Amazon and found the exact same unit brand new with a warranty for $150! I was angry and told the tech to leave. He still charged $98 for the service call. I would not recommend them. I did the repair myself and the furnace works fine and it cost me almost nothing. read more

James River, ROCKS! I have been a longtime customer of 11 years. They have always treated me with the best respect, promptness and service. I see people complaining but you know what, you get what you pay for. They may not be the cheapest (not the most expensive either) but they go ABOVE AND BEYOND. Two examples, when my furnace went out the City of Richmond wanted more work done on the vent chimney and James River relined at no extra charge so it could pass inspection. 8 years later, I just replaced my 22 year old AC and 19 year old hot water heater with them. Not only was their pricing amazing (hello warranty) BUT the new water heater made my tub pipes hammer and they came and resolved the issue again, for no extra charge. Which meant, cutting a hole in my wall and redoing my pipes. I love these guys, they have the best, kindest, knowledgeable people working for them. To say that my attempted employment with JRA was lacking would be an understatement. I was told that JRA would be holding classes strictly for women who were interested in getting into the HVAC field. I took these classes with the knowledge confirmed by the HR department and another supervisor that this class would help us get trained in learning the basics of HVAC. Upon the end of the class, we then told that there were only two positions available and that we would be interviewing. I was taken aback because this information was with held from us. During the interview process, the fact that I had a bachelor's degree was sneered upon and I was asked "with all this education behind you, why would you want to get into HVAC?" Since when did an abundance of education make a person unqualified especially when this is what people are looking for today. When I received my rejection email, I was informed that I had applied for another position entirely, Residential Service Technicians which was not at all what I had been told that the class was going to prep us for. Why would I apply for an advanced position when I just completed the basic course to be a helper with a Preventative Maintenance Technician, wherein I was told that I would need two months experience before taking the test to become refrigerant certified. I replied with an email back and have yet to hear back from JRA. Such practices are incoherent at best and manipulative at worst. read more

Our central A/C stopped working, and so we called a number of companies for a repair quote. James River was very responsive, but charged us $170 to come to the house and tell us that the A/C did in fact need to be repaired (which we already knew). On top of that, their quote was, by far, the most expensive (and that was comparing the same service, new unit, etc.); 20% more than the next most expensive quote. Despite their reputation for doing quality work, their up-front costs and inflated prices sent us elsewhere. read more

My hot water heater started leaking and I was considering switching over to a tankless system. They sent someone out on a Saturday to give a free estimate. So far so good, right? I got the estimate and it was about $14,000 which was close to three times as much as a different estimate from a reputable, licensed, certified tankless installer. I don't care how good their work is, those prices are gouging bordering on criminal. read more

The technician fixed our heat pump quickly and efficiently, no problem there. But in addition to the $98 labor charge, I was charged $253 for a replacement part, a dual-run capacitor 30-5 that sells for $24.95 online. You expect to pay for labor, but you don't expect to get robbed on the parts by being charged 10x the cost of the part. I don't know if it's technically fraud, but it's definitely deceptive and price-gouging. Be warned. read more

Mike the service tech was personable and professional and will be welcome in our home again. However, the "tune-up" I purchased was less than I had hoped for. Mike explained what operations he had performed, and it was little more than an inspection, and I learned little more than I could have by simply turning on the equipment and waiting for it to start. read more

My furnace started acting up so I decided to start calling around to get quotes. I called 4 places including James River Air. I called them on a Saturday and spoke with someone I was told was a supervisor.I won't mention his name. He said a new furnace would be around 3k. I asked him when he or some could come out and give me a exact quote but really didn't seem to want to commit to a actual quote and seemed in a rush to get me off of the phone. I was finally able to get him to commit to calling me back on the following Tuesday to discuss someone coming out for a quote. Well I never heard back. The quote I received from the company I went with was much less than the tentative quote I was given by James River. With all the commercials I see on local TV I assumed they would be eager to help but I found that not to be true. The 3 other companies all seemed like they wanted my business. The one I settled on did a awesome job and I am very pleased with their service. I really can't comment on James River Air's quality because they did not give themselves a chance to prove anything to me. I know you probably shouldn't judge a company off of one interaction but when that one experience isn't good second chances are tough to give. read more

an update... two years later and my system is still working fine without anything needing to be replaced. I get my annual maintenance done else where. Dishonesty cost them one customer and thousands reading this review. review posted 2/8/2011 below, Why do contractors lie? I purchased a package for two maintenance services for my Air conditioning system last year. Their first service call urged that I get parts replaced resulting in over 150 dollar extra to my original budget. I have not had maintenance done on my system for years, therefore, I listen to the experts. Their second service call again left an urgent message on my cell for me to get parts replaced that will cost me another 200-300 dollars. He states that if I do not get the parts replaced it will result in major damage in the near future. I am reluctant to listen this time since it has not been a year since the last time they visited, and I've not had any issues with my system for over 5 years.. why all of the sudden I am in need to invest hundreds of dollars. My parents have AHS for their home due to a dishonest air conditioning company which eventually charged them over a thousand dollar on visits and labor alone. We later realized they only needed maintenance done. The dishonesty in companies like this seem to be a trend and should not be tolerated. I will continue to write reviews on companies until they decide to be honest with their consumers and be considerate of the hard economic times on hard working people like us. My system is still working fine to this day. read more
