We couldn't get in to our normal vet to be seen for a same day appointment and after about 5 more calls to surrounding vets we came across this one. What a blessing!!! They were able to get us in for an appointment and made my wife feel welcomed right away. The staff were caring & had a very family like vibe! I called to ask about ear cropping and the max age for it to be done on a puppy. The lady who answered said there's no max age. I then asked how much it would cost to get my 14 week old dog's ears cropped then she said, "We don't do ear cropping." I have been seeing Dr. Katzer since I moved to Jamul in 1986. Brought my cat in who had been attacked by my dogs. Xrays revealed she had a broken but not displaced pelvis. He told me you might think I'm crazy but this cat will heal on her own and within days you won't even know anything was wrong. He was right, I did think he was crazy. But two days later my cat jumped up on top of my bookcase. WOW. He has treated everything from bloat complications to even doing a tonsillectomy on my Gt. Dane who had chronic tonsilitis (didn't even know dogs had tonsils). Yes he's gruff but he's also a softy and he doesn't fool me one wit. I have been seeing Dr. Sawyer also and he has treated my dogs for all sort of infections and weird things that dogs get into. He is kind and knowledgeable. I recently had to have my senior dog put down and he was very kind to me and my dog. Gave Monty a shot to relax him and then let him wait for 10 minutes for it to take effect before proceding. I love Chantel (the spelling of her name I probably just butchered), she is truly the voice for this clinic. She is funny, kind, efficient and knowledgeable. She is a great asset to this clinic and I think they need to do everything they can to keep her there. In fact I have never had an unpleasant experience with any employee at this animal hospital. I know that even people who live in Oceanside drive their dogs down to be seen here. read more

My family has been going here for years, so naturally when I inherited a relative's cat, I took him to JVH too! Dr. Sawyer gave my cat a check-up, and I had to bring him back the following week to get his front teeth taken out. :( Dr. Sawyer was wonderful. He told me everything I needed to know and gave me a very fair price for the services. I had to call back a few weeks later because my cat's teeth weren't healing, and he was very understanding and willing to give info and prescribe medicine over the phone, rather than have me bring my miserable cat all the way out to Jamul again. I can't express how much I appreciate that, because I know they lose money when I call with questions rather than come in for a visit. This office really has their priorities straight. I have not personally worked with Dr. Katzer, but my parents have and they swear by him. He was extremely kind to my elderly grandfather before he (my grandpa) passed away. I know other people have some issues with his gruff persona, but my family knows he's a great guy underneath. You will too if you come in for a visit! read more

Took my dog Samson in for the first time. No appt. needed they said when I called to make one. We were seen fairly promptly. The staff and the Vet were very nice. My dog got his shots and away we went. I gave them 4 stars because I consider that 'very good', a 5 star experience would have entailed a special first time discount or free labwork, or something else 'above and beyond' Samson's other Vet (Dr Kaiser in Spring Valley) retired and this new place was recommended to us by a family member who also has beagles. I really wish I could give zero stars. This was our heartbreaking experience. We had a kitten we rescued, Sofie. She was so adorable and so loving. We noticed that she was not eating well, and looked a little off, so we took her in and saw Dr. Sawyer. I was very worried she had something serious. To our relief, he said she had a lunge infection and had tested negative for anything life threatening. We were so relieved. He said he drained some fluid from her lungs and gave her an antibiotic and that she should be fine. Thank God we thought. It was a Friday, and he recommended we leave her there over the weekend so she could get fluids and her antibiotics, and we thought that sounded like a good idea. We asked if we could see her (I didn't want her to think she had been abandoned). My husband went to see her (she was always his special girl). He checked in in the front and Dr. Sawyer was with someone else, so they told him he could go back and see her. Guess what? He went back to the kennel area and there was our beloved Sofie kitty, dead and all alone. Words cannot express our devastation. Dr. Sawyer came over and saw this. My husband wanted to beat the hell out of him, and nearly did. We took her home and buried her. It causes us so much sadness to know that she dies like that. Locked up in a cage and all alone. If it was her time we would have made sure we took her home and spend time with her and loved on her. To make matters even worse, guess what happened next? We got a nasty phone message that we better pay our bill or will be turned over to collections. Seems my husband left without paying the bill (he said he needed to get out of there before he hurt someone). No apology, no understanding. Just "Pay us or else". Please take your beloved pets to Steele Canyon Vet. Dr. Christine is a true animal lover and stay away from these horrible people. read more

I've never met Dr. Katzer but I'm sure he still loves it because he remains passionate even after being in the field of veterinary medicine for many years. This place is awesome! They saved my dogs life TWICE! Jack was a 8 wk rescue pitbull who had a clogged intestine when we brought him in on a 4th of July weekend and Dr. Katzer operated that same night. Now 6 years later (last weekend) we noticed him having trouble breathing we first took him to the VCA but that place was horrible and Jack did not want to be there! We brought him back in to Jamul and Dr. Sawyer saved his life AGAIN! These vets are great! Very caring, professional and understanding. The cost was minimal compared to other places the only thing is I wish they took care credit, other then that I highly recommend this place if you care about your animal. read more

Nothing like continuing on the doggy generations of business by using the same family vet as my in-laws. My husband grew up out in Jamul and J.V.H. was the spot for those who lived out there, probably the only spot come to think of it. Either way, the work of Dr. Katzer has always been spoken highly of and when we announced we would be getting a puppy, the obvious suggestion was to come here. As my husband likes to politely put it, "he was old when I was a kid!!!!" I hear that Dr. Katzer can be a little "rough" with the animals but has a magical touch to revive animals who appear to be a goner to the non-vet expert. I haven't had the chance of meeting him yet on my visit there but, the younger man who (might be a vet assistant??) was very helpful explaining proper food amounts for my dog and was very gentle with her when we went in for final round of puppy shots. The services J.V.H. provides are much less costly than a regular vet. We were quoted nearly 200 dollars less for the upcoming spay of our puppy compared to the vet here in downtown San Diego. Rent probably had something to do with that one. I love how the people here are very straight-forward with you, all of the girls are very polite at the front, and there is a small doggy/kitty boutique area to browse while you wait for your appointment. They board overnight and have a good sized grassy patch outside that is secured and fenced in for doggy frolics so they are not confined to their kennels for the duration of your vacation. This is the new location which is bright, beautiful, secured with sensors so no one's dog bolts out the door by accidents without it being noticed, and ample parking available in both a paved and dirt lot. It's the family joke that their previous pugs they owned must have paid for the brand new hospital with as many times as it would get into things. Clumsy little devils. The most classic line of all came from Katzer himself when he saw his new patient, "Spackman's and their pugs!" read more

A second visit update. When I went in to have my Bulldog seen, I was a new patient and had driven an hour to get here due to the ER my Puddin Pie was facing. Because Dr. Sawyer had been so kind to us, I didn't think twice to come in a second time with a new pet, again on a Saturday, again needing a last minute appointment. This time my 16 yo angry lil shit of a Chihuahua mix ate an enormous bowl of turkey that turned his tummy into the Goliath Roller Coaster. Because of his age I had to get him in, even though the whole state was under quarantine due to the Caronavirus and I hadn't worked or been paid for 3 1/2 weeks. I was frightened about the upcoming bill but had to get my pup some help. Dr. Sawyer was again, very thorough, kind and especially careful to not stress out my mean and sick dog. He did a full exam which my pup has NEVER allowed any other vet to do. I usually end up paying the full exam fee even though the vet can't do much besides look at him from afar. Even though my dog was pissed, he got his full exam. I also appreciated the fact that Dr. Sawyer's assistant had me handle Nacho which allowed me to calm him down as much as possible. I was never sold a bunch of unnecessary tests, wasn't 'upsold' on services that weren't needed. The Doc simply advised me what would help Nacho feel better....a probiotic, an anti diarrhea rx and an rx to calm his aching tummy. He also gave my pup a shot to jump start the healing process and managed to cut his black nails without making a single one bleed. I was shocked at the bill.....1/4th of what I thought I would have to pay! I have always judged a good vet by how well they are able to handle Nacho since he can bite through a muzzle and will fight like a baited Bull if he's even looked at wrong. Dr. Sawyer and his staff won my vote! Not only did they go above and beyond but my Nacho felt 80% better by the same night! The next day he was back to his old grumpy self! read more

I brought my pup to get his ears cropped and stayed around for check ups weekly with ear taping and what not, the first time we brought him they were comforting . The veterinarian is a bit older but he's great, he's straight to the point and helpful. I like it ! The assistants on the other hand seem to hate life . They are always slow to come to help , then talk to you as if your their younger sibling with no manners or professionalism . The 5 or 6 times we returned for follow ups the girls were rude and quick with some sarcasm that wasn't not appreciated . There is a brunette with bangs, veterinary technician who assisted us a lot and every time I left I had a reason to be unhappy . There's a thick blonde girl as well who isn't very happy when you ask questions or talk to her, but she's not sarcastic at least. The only nice face to see was the veterinarians! He was great and gave my pup awesome cropped ears! They need way better and happier people there considering it's an animal hospital ! The work there is done well, as long as it's by the veterinarian himself . No one else. read more

It's taken me a few years of being upset and to write this. I came here a few years back with my Jack Russell who was diagnosed and dying of lymphoma. They told me to take her home and makE her comfortable and I would know when it was time to bring her back to cross over rainbow ow bridge. That sad day came only a week of being diagnosed, they told me no appointment ointment was needed and to just call when I was on the way. I did so. I arrived and a gentleman led us to a room where I put her up an the table with a beautiful blanket me mom had made me for when I'm sick and need aa snuggle, I had already made my mind up to burry her on our property with it. They gave her the shot for eternal sleep and within seconds she was gone. She ended up making a mess on the blanket as that happens some times. What made me upset was the dr. Didn't even give a min. He wrapped her up in her poop and handed her to me and showed me to the door. Didn't try to clean her up or the blanket in anyway. The entire trip home my heart held so heavy I couldn't even hold her, I had to put her in a box with the dirty blanket I'm the back of my truck because the smell was so awful. The experience was AwfUl and neither me nor my dying dog felt any sort of compassion. I had this pup for 15 years before having to put Her down, she was a part of oUr family and deserved so much more then she was given in her final moments. I've been angry for years about this and I wish the feelings i have held upon no one. Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more

We had been putting off a decision to euthanize our 18 year old cat, but finally it was clear that for her, it was the right decision. I had been reading about in-home vets, but decided to go to our local vet in hopes that it would be all right for our cat. Dr. Sawyer was gentle, kind and compassionate. Our sweet old kitty was a bit uncomfortable, being touched by strange hands as well as mine, but after an initial tiny hiss, she relaxed and Dr. Sawyer gently led her into sleep. We were encouraged to stay with her as long as we wished to say our last goodbyes. I feel she went as peacefully as we could hope for. Thank you Dr. Sawyer for being such a kind man. read more

Dr Katzer has a very well-trained staff and has built a beautiful vet clinic and hospital servicing Jamul and East County. We have since moved away from Jamul but still make the 90-mile round trip to see him exclusively because he's just that wonderful! His staff is very focused and well-trained from the front desk to the vet techs to the groomers. This is a beautiful facility with state-of-the-art x-ray machines and digital imaging. We are customers for life! read more

This office is easy to schedule an appointment with and the staff is very friendly and helpful. This is a very nice facility with plenty of parking. I only went here because I tracked down my vet who had changed offices. The office is very clean and the staff is very friendly. I went there today because my dog had a skin problem on his face. The vet, Dr. Sawyer, has treated my dog when he swallowed a foam ball last year and he took such GREAT care of my dog that I had to seek him out for this more minor problem. I like that they accept walk-ins from 2:30-6 w/o charging "urgent care" prices. read more

I'm writing from a saddened heart on my personal experience with this Vet. I brought my cat to put her down. I have never been to this vet before but was the closest vet to our area. Upon arrival the front staff was friendly however my experience with the doctor was not. When the vet came in I asked him "if it gets easier" when putting pets down. He response "doesn't matter to me any, it's not my animal." You can imagine how taken back by this answer I was and how sad I felt that I left the last few moments of my beloved pet in careless hands. He didn't explain the process at all and rather injected my cat with a relaxer and that was my moments to say goodbye. He came back within minutes and never asked if I was ready or if I needed more time. He treated the whole experience like we were just another appointment. I regret to this day bringing my pet here. I would not come back to this vet ever. read more

I am absolutely in love with this hospital for my babies. It is an old time vet office. They don't have all the new equipment. You can bring your pet in anytime. They love animals and are not in it to make money. They care about what is wrong with your pet and the best way to fix it without it costing your house. I went to VCA for a cough my dog had............. after an overnight stay and a bunch of xrays and blood work............ all she had was kennel cough............. one antiboitic...... the bill 1035,95. I went to Jamul vet with another pet. she had a cough......... antibiotics. and office visit 85.00. I had to put a pet to sleep///////// VCA wanted 450.00 plus disposal of my pet. VCA 75.00. and I held her as she passed away. This is an awesome office. its a little far but well worth it. read more

Dr. Katzer is an inadequate vet and should be ASHAMED of himself. He should no longer be in practice. A few weeks ago we took my 14 yo lab in to be euthanized, and Dr. Katzer made it even more excruciating than the situation already was. He botched the first IV, then botched the second, then on the third asked, "This should be it, right?" (meaning the vain) and botched the third. Why are you asking the client where the vein should be??!? Mind you, every time he sticks her she is in pain, struggles, and we have to hold my senior dog to the table with force. He then has a temper tantrum, blames his assistant and then FINALLY gets the other Dr. after I told him he was not allowed back in for the procedure. I thank God there was another vet, because he finally ended the ordeal peacefully. Dr. Katzer may once have been a good vet, but he no longer possesses the skill to do his job. I cannot stop reliving the painful scene in my head because of him. I hope you never put another family through that again. Shame on you. read more

Today I had my little girl fixed. Although I thought this was a nice enough place imagine my shock when I went to pick her up and was told she had wire stitches inside that would never melt away. They even laughed and told me when she gained weight they would be covered by fat and I would no longer be aware of them. I have had several pets spayed and neutered over the years and they all had dissolving stitches. I was not informed when I dropped her off and had originally chosen this vet for the laser technology that would be used during the surgery. Seeming so far ahead of the times I had no idea they were in the dark ages as far as the stitches. Upon picking her up I was told it was to save time and use for x-ray proof of spay later. My major complaint here is the fact that I should have been told ahead of time about none removable sutures. If I had it to do over I would not use this vet. Long story short if this sort of thing bothers you make sure you ask questions ahead of time. read more

Never use this vet if you value your pet's life. Our Cairn Terrier had emergency surgery due to the discovery of cancer in her colon. The emergency clinic vet advised us that she would need supervised 24 hour care. Since the emergency clinic closed at 8 am, the emergency vet advised us to take our dog to our regular vet or a local one then pick her up and bring her back to the emergency clinic in the late afternoon when they reopened. We told the emergency vet that we would take her to her regular vet office, The Jamul Veterinary Hospital. The emergency vet told us he would call our vet and fax over our dog's medical sheet. Dr Sawyer met us and advised that the emergency vet had called and faxed over the medical records just as he promised. Dr Sawyer made a suggestion that I will never understand or forget as it was unfathomable to me that someone in his position was uncaring and would blatantly lie to us. He told us that the emergency vet did call with instructions for our dog's care, he then said "why go back and forth, just leave her here, I told Dr Sawyer that I wanted what was best for our dog, he said "then leave her here". What he neglected to tell us was that they closed at 6 pm and there would be no one there to monitor our dog's condition. She died sometime that morning, alone and without the needed care we thought had been promised. When the emergency vet was told that our dog died and that she didn't get care that she was suppose to that night, he was obviously distraught and told us our vet's actions were a blatant disregard for our dog's life. Why did Dr Sawyer do what he did?, I will never know, maybe our dog dies that night with supervised care, but the emergency vet didn't think so, he said we would most likely have from a few days to a few weeks, even a few months with a 10 percent change of recovery. I do know that she wasn't given that chance because of the actions of Dr Sawyer. I find his actions and disregard for our dog's life repugnant. read more

I love this vet and would never take my dobbie anywhere else. We have been bringing our dog here since he was a puppy for his shots, then to get his ears cropped (which look great, we always get complemented), for his neuter and everything else we need. This morning I noticed our pooch had a puncture wound on his chest and immediately brought him in. Being that it was Memorial Day they were closed but I pulled into the parking lot just as the doc was leaving. He was kind enough to open up for me and treat my dog. It is true that Dr Ketzer is a little rough around the edges but he is a great vet. My dog always feels comfortable there and doesn't growl at the staff. It is always clean when I go in. Point blank I love my dog and I want the best care for him as a valued member of my family and have piece of mind knowing he is receiving best of care when I bring him here. Once again today Im reminded why I choose this veterinary hospital over others. Staff are caring and courteous. Doctors take the time to explain whats happening with your loved one (pets). I have SEVERAL animals and Dr Katzer (and Dr Sawyer) never send us away for referrals or to Pet Emergency. To quote Larry the Cable Guy they "git er done". Today my dog had a hole in his leg (self inflictes) and Dr Sawyer's response ( on a SATURDAY no less, was " leave him with me Ill stitch him up". and they did. thank you read more
