We recently adopted 2 two-year-old cats from Friends of Cats in El Cajon. Every adoption comes with a free vet visit and the shelter staff recommended Steele Canyon. The clinic is in an unassuming storefront in a strip mall. Inside, it's bustling and cheerful. The front-desk lady who greeted us (and was also our vet tech) was very nice. We were seen quite promptly, and the tech did a thorough and gentle exam on both kitties. The vet, Dr. Bader, was excellent and thorough and pronounced both kitties healthy. We were thinking this visit would be a one-off, only because there are vets much closer to our home, but now we're planning to make this our new vet clinic. The care is good, the staff are kind and friendly and the clinic isn't owned by VCA or another corporate entity. (Our previous favorite clinic was bought by VCA a few years ago; prices have skyrocketed, staff turnover is very high and you never see the same vet twice because they leave so quickly.) We hope our kitties stay healthy for many years, but we'll be bringing them back to Steele Canyon for their yearly wellness visits and future health needs. read more

I could go on and on about how wonderful the doctors and staff at Steel Canyon Veterinary Clinic are, but I am just going to give you an example of how committed they are to helping their clients and their client's pets. I brought my cat in to the clinic because my cat had not eaten anything in a number of days. After checking his past history and running a blood test, it was discovered my boy was anemic. I discussed the situation with Dr. Wilson and it was decided that my cat required a transfusion. Hmmm, I thought, I wonder where the cat blood bank was located and how they got their blood. No worries the doctor said, I will bring in one of my cats from home to provide the blood. Say What!!! I don't know about you, but I thought that was going above and beyond the call of duty. Her cat is not fond of traveling in a carrier, so she had to give it a mild calming tranquilizer in order to bring him to the clinic the next day. Dr. Wilson thought nothing of going to that extra effort for my cat. Maybe it's just me, but I am still taken aback by her extra effort. As I mentioned, the entire staff is very caring and the doctors are first rate. I would highly recommend Steele Canyon Veterinary Clinic as a place to take your pets for expert care. read more

This is the most honest, caring vet clinic I have ever frequented over many pets and many years. Not sure how my story is going to end (I'm praying for a happy ending) but they've taken exceptional car of my elderly kitty Fluff who I adopted when my Pop passed away a year and a half ago. Their service is more than exceptional and the costs in my opinion have been rings in line - if not lower - than most. On a really important note - I called 5 veterinary clinics who all told me they were booked and couldn't help us. Dr. C and her staff are amazing. She spent 20 minutes examining my poor, nervous, itchy dog and did her best to calm her down. Dr. C was patient and gentle and got the job done. She shared her knowledge and insight about my lab and some potential concerns. There was no attempt to upsell their services or try to make me feel my dog needed more than what I was asking for, in this case a cytopoint shot. This place is horrible. Christine Willow, the doctor does not work there often, is not on call. They have nice receptionists and a manger running the place . taking exams is how they make money. So the do not need doctors there. My dog had a huge wound, we went there and they refused to help or give antibiotics. Update Christine refused to prescribe antibiotics. My dog is getting sicker and i called 20 house call vets and none can help cause i cannot get the dog into the car. I am still calling. If my dog dies because of this infection Christine should have some liability...helpless to help our dog. They would not even help with a referral for a house vet. read more

I have had nothing but good experiences with both Veterinarians at the clinic. They are very quick to accurately guess a diagnosis when you come in, and prices for treatments are reasonable. I love Dr. Christine Wilson!! Dr. Wilson is SO nice and really concerned about your pets' welfare. She was sure to explain everything very thoroughly and even explained the costs and did everything she could to make it as inexpensive as possible. However, if I had seen the other Dr. Wilson first, I might not have come back (there is also a male Dr. Wilson working here.. not sure of any relation). He saw my dog on my second visit and didn't really explain what he was doing. He ended up needing to take a skin scraping. What he failed to mention was that this was going to be an extra $20!! I would have paid it anyway because it needed to be done.. but seriously? It's literally just rubbing a glass slide on the skin and going to look at it under a microscope for 2 mins. How does that cost so much? He didn't even do a full exam (even though I paid $50 for the visit) because he was too busy looking at the skin. Despite all that, I would still give this place 5 stars because he found out what was wrong with my dog and fixed him :) What's the reason for the 4 stars, then? The wait. Every single time I come here, I have to wait AT LEAST 20 minutes before being seen. 20 minutes after my APPOINTMENT time. What is the point of making an appointment?? If I tried to come in as a walk-in and they told me the wait was that long, I probably wouldn't stay. But with a reserved appointment time? Unacceptable. read more

A big part of pet ownership is facing the reality that there is always a beginning and an end. The beginning is always wonderful but the end never gets easy. Over the years I have had to say goodbye to more than a dozen different dogs and it never gets easy. It actually feels more painful each time. But Steele Canyon Veterinary Clinic are the most understanding vet I have ever had. In comparison, once I had a Fox Terrier that developed serious diabetes at 12-years old. The vet I went to was extremely insensitive. They wanted me to spend thousands of dollars a month on blood tests and insulin shots for a 12-year old dog. When I finally convinced them to put her down, they were very harsh about it and charged me $350. to put down my dog. They did everything to make me feel guilty. Recently I had to put down a very beloved dog that was only 8-years old (cancer). This was the second dog we had to put down at Steele Canyon Veterinary Clinic (the other one was 15 years old). They are so kind and thorough in their treatment of my dogs. They do not pressure me to spend money but they do explain the options and what they will cost so that I can make sensible decisions in regards to my pets health. In all of my decades of dog ownership, I can honestly say that this is the best veterinary clinic I have ever hired. I most highly recommend them and will never go to any other veterinarian again. Dr. Wilson is highly knowledgable and very understanding that quality of life is so important for pets. I feel lucky to have gotten 8 great years with the dog I just lost and I feel good that I did not let him suffer at the end because of my own selfishness. Part of responsible pet ownership is understanding that pets are never meant to be seniors. There are billions of puppies in the world looking for new homes. If you have a seriously sick dog, no matter how much you love it, do the unselfish thing and gently put it down. Again, I would give Steele Canyon Veterinary Clinic 100 stars for their kindness, care, thoroughness, and understanding of the realities of pet ownership. and they are very honest. After having a horrible experience at Jamul Veterinary Clinic, I walked into this clinic crying with my poor dog that was bleeding and really sick. They took me as a walk in and were so nice to me. The staff is so nice and the vet (a woman who's name escapes me) was so wonderful! They treated my dog immediatly, did the proper tests and I didnt feel like they padded my bill with unnescessary tests and procedures. I cant say enough how wonderful these people are, and how greatful I am to them for helping me and my dog. My dog was bleeding from her girl parts and they took a urine sample and tested it and found her to have a UTI. There might have been another cause for the blood, but after extensive talking with the vet we decided to treat the UTI and see if the other symptoms persist or arise. Usually vets dont give you much time to talk, they are busy people and I respect that...but this place was not like that at all, we talked for a while about all the options available and how they would affect our situation. I really felt that I was a priority to them, and I didnt even have an appt! They charged me $115 for the visit, a urinalisys, and antibiotics...its not horribly over priced...but not the cheapest I have ever seen...well worth the service I recieved though! read more

Dr.Christine is a pet Angel & the staff are professional. I've come for routine appointments and when my little beast nephew is sick. Both type of appointments have opened my eyes to how much heart vets here have. Of course one never knows how the animals are being treated in the back rooms because they're always going to be in a rush to see the owner when coming back... but at least I can see how patient & loving they are in waiting room & appointment rooms. They help coordinate the animals, seating, waiting. They help block other pets to create easiness of weighing them in. It's the little things that help show they care and experienced. If you've seen my profile, you know how much I love my pets. And so far this place has answered my prayers. They're minutes from me. They're reasonable, they don't upsell, they don't give up on the sick and elderly pets we love so much, and dr. Christine Wilson seems to genuinely love animals, unlike some of the stranger clinics I have had experiences with. They get right to treating your sick pets rather than push for more and more testing. I don't think one of my elderly cats with kidney disease would have survived without them. It hurts me to make this review, but it hurts even more that my last visit ended in tragedy. I have been taking all of my dogs to Dr. Wilson since she opened up her practice. All of these years, I would have given her 5+ stars for her great service. My last visit ended with my beloved Maltese mix dying. As if that is not bad enough, he passed away last March of 2020, at the time COVID kicked in and things began to shut down. He was diagnosed with doggy diabetes. In all fairness, I did not see Dr. Wilson, but a different doctor at her practice with whom I was not familiar with. After his diagnosis, I was asked to drop him off for two more days so they could evaluate his condition and dial in his medication. 3 days after I took him home, he died. To add insult to injury, I was told they would call me from time to time and ask me to take a glucose reading so they could adjust his insulin. A year later, they have yet to call me to perform the glucose reading or even check on how he is doing and at the very least, refill his prescription. They don't even know he died, because I am still waiting on that phone call to do a glucose test reading for them to check up. It's been almost a year, and my world without him has turned upside down, and they haven't even followed up for an insulin refill. How hurtful.....It's not like I was a new customer they didn't really know. I have been a long time customer who would drop off cookies and brownies at Christmas with a "thank you" note. This year, I am not sure why Dr. Wilson has distanced herself from her patients , but the new Dr's on her watch, in my opinion, allowed my buddy to die. The vet tech who checked me out the last day I was there was more concerned about his side blow up jumper business than my pet's health. Excuse any typo's but I am writing this in tears. No excuse for this unprofessionalism. Dr. Wilson has always been a great Dr. I am not sure what happened. read more

I got recommended to this veterinary clinic by multiple people and I am very satisfied with my decision. I brought my female calico in to be checked out due to self mutation from over scratching. Lindsey in particular was super sweet and helpful both on the phone and in person, but so is everyone else there. The prices seem reasonable and they go over every cost paired with the procedure to make sure you understand and can afford the costs. If you have a kitten they have a vaccination kitten package which I found to be the cheapest best deal then all the other clinics in the rancho San Diego El Cajon Area. I was going to do 3 stars but 2 stars says "I've experienced better" and 3 says "A ok", so 2 fits best. This place is okay; I wouldn't say DON'T bring your pet here. But I have been spoiled by better before we moved here. This place is SLOOOOOOOOW. If you are the kind of person who hates it when you make an appointment for 3:00 and don't get to see the doctor until 4:00, this place will drive you mad. I've been here many many times, so this isn't just a rare occurrence. It is EVERY TIME. Also, out pet needs a certain drug for the rest of his life, which isn't that much longer, and the drug itself isn't expensive, but they won't give it to us without having regular blood tests, so that is where the cost is. Bottom line: they aren't concerned about the customers convenience; just their own. They line us up in the waiting area so we are ready when they are and give no thought to how long we have to wait. If year after year goes by and every time they schedule an appointment, it turns out much later, CHANGE THE SYSTEM! Tell someone 3:30 instead of 3:00 for example. Occasionally, fine, they have a busy day, etc, but I'm talking 100% of the time I've been there, which is easily over a dozen. That all being said, they won't endanger your pet; they are fine in that way. They just need to have the customers convenience a lot more in mind. read more

My family (My wife and I, my sister, and my parents) have been taking our pets (5 dogs and two cats) here for a couple of years now. I live down near the airport, but still drive the 30 minutes every time I need to go to the vet to go to Steele Canyon. Dr. Wilson is by far the best vet any of us have ever had. Her and all the staff members are very down to earth and helpful. Also, they are extremely affordable. My dog has a heart problem, therefore we regularly have to go for check-ups and to get medication. Dr. Wilson always takes the time to make sure our dog is comfortable. She'll even do her check-up in the floor, instead of the table, to make sure the dog is as comfortable and he can be. I would highly recommend this vet to anyone in San Diego. It's well worth the drive, even if you don't live in the El Cajon / Jamul area. read more

I live in San Diego and was referred here by a friend. I've been going here for almost two years and make the 40 minute drive for everything from a simple vaccine that I could get at PetSmart to conditions that could be serious. For example, my dog had an injured foot (not an emergency), and I left a message on a day they were closed to call me first thing on Monday so I could get an appointment in case they were very busy. Over the weekend, they checked their voice mails, and the DOCTOR called me on a Sunday to check on her and to see if it was an emergency, and got the appointment scheduled. I was so impressed! Unlike many vets, everyone in the office seems to truly care about your animal, and they actually listen to your opinions and concerns. They are pet owners as well, so they understand how you are feeling. They make follow up phone calls to check on your pet, and if he or she isn't progressing and/or healing, they will make another appointment or even just make another follow up call if you're not ready to bring the animal back yet. They don't push specific brands of foods which was one thing I never realized vets often did until I saw Dr. Wilson. It isn't hard to get an appointment, and their prices are extremely reasonable too! Steele Canyon Veterinary Clinic is the best vet I've ever been to in my whole entire life. I recommend them to everyone I know when their pet is sick or injured. read more

I was appalled at this place. I got a free visit with the puppy that I had adopted. No thank you... the staff was disorganized, although very nice, the vet seemed to rule with an iron fist that had his nurses saying sorry for trivial things. The nurse at one point seemed afraid of "interrupting" us with important info. That info that was that my puppy had a water parasite causing her very bad diarrhea... the Vet told me no big deal... well now 6 weeks later I am still treating it because it wasn't addressed immediately. The worst part.... FLEAS. EVERYWHERE. I even said to the Vet who had fleas on him, on the table on my TREATED puppy... everywhere... oh there are fleas & he had the nerve to say Yes.. all dogs carry them even if treated... ??????????? WHAT... really? Because I've NEVER seen fleas jumping all over any of my dogs. It was disgusting. I will stick with my regular vet.... Animal Care Clinic in Rancho San Diego. I know I pay a little more there, but over 13 years I have always received amazing service. read more
